Re: [Bug 350503] Re: System (64 bit ) hangs in ubuntu 9.04 Beta

2009-07-16 Thread Abdul Basit
Hi Bryce,

I am not sure how ubuntu team is fixing the problems reported, i mean
what is the process?
A bug was reported but I was being asked multiple times to test with
newer versions without actually understanding what would have caused
the bug at the first place? IMHO, simply going to a newer version of
some driver would not mean the problem is auto-magically fixed.

I have only one desktop machine, and when fedora 11 comes i installed
that and put the latest nvidia driver in FC repository, the problem
still persists so I decided to go back using noveua nvdiia
implementation which is running perfectly so far.

The problem is in newer versions nvidia driver ( 173.x ) itself,
someone has to examine the dumps and find the problem and fix and then
ask to test the new version.

Thanks,
- Basit

bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers-180” package in Ubuntu: Invalid

 Bug description:
 Update: 03/31

I think ubuntu should use nvidia driver 173.14.18 with newer kernels, this
should be marked as Recommended install.

 Update: 03/29

The bug appears to be related with using nvidia driver 180.x and newer linux
 kernel 2.6.28+.
I have used Nvidia driver 173.14.18 and the problem is not seen yet :)

 Update: 03/28
 did echo c /proc/sysrq-trigger
 attaching the crash dump.

 Folks,

I am using 9.04 Beta 64-bit, I am experiencing a series problem where I am
using the machine and the machine just hangs, I am not able to move mouse,
can not type anything and video freezes, this normally happens within 30
minutes when I am using the system.

I have used previous ubuntu release 8.10 64-bit for hours without any
problems on the same machine with same hardware configuration.

These are my machine specifications :-

 .. 4 GB RAM
.. ECS GF8200A mother board with AMD PHENOM 9550 Quad core and external PCI
 nvidia 7200 (in use)

The ubuntu kernel where this problem occur is 2.6.28, I myself have compiled
2.6.29 on 9.04 beta and the problem still happens, have nvidia 180.37 driver
 installed.

If any further information is required or I could help collect more
 information, please let me know.

 Thx,
 Basit

[Bug 350503] Re: System (64 bit ) hangs in ubuntu 9.04 Beta

2009-04-02 Thread Abdul Basit
Hi Bryce,

I installed the 180.44 on my box, it did not solve the issue, the system
still hangs, this time i could create the issue quickly by just pressing
the desktop icon (gnome) to minimize all open windows and then click
again to re-open all windows, do this multiple times while the visual
effects are set to normal. the system hanged.

The only nvidia driver that seems to work properly for me is 173.14.x, I
am using 173.14.18 and it is working reliably since some days now. I
noticed the ubuntu jaunty is still at 173.14.16.

Please let me know if you need additional information, I will be glad to help.
