Re: [Bug 292036] Re: [Mobility x1600] All video playback fails with open source graphics driver

2009-02-21 Thread ar-jar
Hi,

Thanks for your efforts with Ubuntu!

The Jaunty driver seems to work from the live CD. I played the ogv file
from the Examples directory and also a wmv file (having installed a
codec) and both played ok. I do get quite a bit of tearing but that's
another issue. I will look into it a bit more and see if anything has
been written or reported on it.

I attach what I believe is the log file that you requested. (I'm not
quite sure how the live CD stores stuff but this was
the /var/log/Xorg.0.log that I found.)

I also did the aggressive recipe for my existing 8.10 installation
from the wiki page you referred to but after that I get an error message
saying that my configuration can not be detected and my only option
seems to be to end up in a low graphics mode. I tried searching a bit
on the net but didn't find anything but recommendations to install the
ati proprietary drivers... My display was correctly configured by the
open source driver that came with 8.10 when I did a clean istall. I'm
not sure if that was the same driver that I have installed following the
agressive recipe though.

Any pointer as to how I can get the open source driver to correctly
configure my display (or how to do it manually)?

Thanks!

Arto

Next I'd like to forward this issue upstream, but first it must be
retested on latest Jaunty to make sure the issue still happens there
with the latest code. ISO images are available at
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/. If you can reproduce it in
the LiveCD environment, you shouldn't need to modify your installed
system. Also please attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from this testing.

[Bug 300776] [NEW] Segmentation fault in Rhytmbox when returning from stand-by

2008-11-21 Thread ar-jar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

When returning from stand-by I lose audio, i.e. no sound playback is possible
with any player. When hitting Test in Preferences - Sound I get the attached
error message. Also pls find dmesg file attached. There's a line in it saying
[16837.389467] rhythmbox[27255]: segfault at 3 ip b6dad29b sp b2883f8c error 4
in libc-2.8.90.so[b6d36000+158000]
which I suspect means that a segmentation fault has occured at startup. This
doesn't happen everytime I'm afraid so if I can assist in any further analysis,
pls let me know.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 on a Compaq nc8430 laptop. With the latest updates
as of today.

Thanks! -Arto

Re: [Bug 300776] Re: Segmentation fault in Rhytmbox when returning from stand-by

2008-11-21 Thread ar-jar
Hi,

There is nothing in that directory. Probably because Totem didn't crash.
It only stopped outputting sound. The GUI continues to work as before
but nothing happens when you try to start playback.

I understand that the bug is challenging as it is intermittent (but
rather frequent), and because its hard to find an Ubuntu machine on
which standby actually works :-), but I don't think it is right to close
the bug report unless you think this is an acceptable bug.

Best regards,

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will

[Bug 292036] [NEW] All video playback fails with open source graphics driver

2008-11-01 Thread ar-jar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

On a clean install of 8.10 on a Compaq nc8430 laptop, all video playback
fails when using the default (open source) graphics driver. Both Movie
Player and VLC crash (abort) when video playback is about to start. This
also happens when trying to play the ogv video sample in the Examples
directory. Additional codecs don't help.

When I switch to the proprietary ATI driver, all video plays ok. The
additional codecs I previously installed do their job with various
formats. No more crashes. My guess is thus that this has to do with the
open source driver.

As there are additional issues with the graphics driver (artifacts
returning from standby), I'm currently using the ATI driver. Let me know
if you wish any additional diagnostics info while the open source driver
is installed.

[Bug 284777] [NEW] Openoffice slow after returning from hibernation

2008-10-16 Thread ar-jar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When returning from hibernation, the Openoffice Impress becomes slow.
One indication is that there is a delay of a few seconds when selecting
a new slide from the Slide Pane. When I restart Openoffice, it again
becomes responsive.

I suspect very strongly that the same goes for other applications. I get
a lot of interruptions while listening to Internet radio with VLC after
returning from hibernation. If I restart the computer, then it works ok
again.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 with the latest updates as of today. The
hardware is an AMD Phenom 4 core on an ASUS motherboard (I can provide
details if necessary).

Thanks!

Arto Jarvinen

[Bug 248839] Re: List of network servers is not updated

2008-09-08 Thread ar-jar
I answered by mail but I realize that for added transparency I should
perhaps reply here too:

Not sure what exactly what type of smbclient output you wish. I haven't
used this utility before. I don't have any problems listing the shares
on all the computers in the HOME workgroup with the -L flag. See below.

There are currently five computers on-line on the home network, two
Ubuntu machines, two XP machines and one machine running Vista. Not sure
what the Domain parameter in the smbclient output means. No Windows
domain is set on any computer. All machines have workgroup set to HOME
but that doesn't show for the Windows machines.

If I try smbclient -L=* then I only get one of the computers (Solbacka)
listed as below. Not sure if * is a valid value.

I also did smbfind (see below). It would only list the two Ubuntu
computers currently on the network. Not sure if the Windows machines are
supposed to be listed. It certainly looks so in some of the examples on
Internet.

After several tries to open the Windows Network in Nautilus, all five
servers are listed in the smb://home/ view. The network:/// view only
shows three computers. After computer restart the correct list appears in
the network:/// view.

In Windows, the My Network Places window shows all servers and shares
currently on the network (and a few that aren't currently on-line).

Overall, the different ways to look at the network (through Windows,
smbclient, smbfind, Nautilus) give an inconsistent view with respect to
available servers and workgroup assignment. And again, this is after
coming back from hibernation.

Please let me know what smbclient commands you'd like to have the output
from so that I can assist you better.

Thanks!

Arto

[Bug 248839] [NEW] List of network servers is not updated

2008-07-15 Thread ar-jar
Public bug reported:

When I restart my computers running Hardy Heron after hibernation or
stand-by and select Places - Network, I get a list of computers that
was the current list when I last time rebooted the computer (I believe).
It's at least not the list of computers currently on-line and it doesn't
get update between reboots.

When I browse my way through Windows Network - Home (my workgroup) -
Computer X, I often get a blank window at first on all levels in the
folder hierarchy. I have to try 2 - 4 times before I see the content of
the next level. The same behavior is repeated all the way down to the
windows showing the shares on a particular computer in the Windows
workgroup. The computers in the Windows workgroup are a mix of Windows
XP and Hardy Heron. No difference in behavior.

The list of computers in the Windows workgroup seems to be a more
current (but not always entirely current, see below) list of computers
on-line and is usually thus not the same as the list of computers in the
top level Network (Severs) window.

Opening the Windows workgroup computers from a Windows XP machine does
not require several tries to open the next level, regardless of if the
computer runs Ubuntu or Windows.

When I suspend an Ubuntu computer, the list of computers in the
Workgroup folder is updated only after about 10 minutes in either Ubuntu
or Windows and the update only shows when I reopen the window. Maybe a
feature of the Windows workgroup implementation?

In conclusion, there are three perspectives on this issue:

#1: The list of servers in the Network window / view is not updated as
servers are added and others are taken off-line. If this is the intended
behavior then let me suggest that it is confusing and not very helpful.

#2: The same window / view is called Network under the Places menu but
Network Servers in the Places left navigation bar of the file browser.
As it looks now, a third name, Networks and Network Servers, would
perhaps be more appropriate as it is a mix of both types of objects. I
would be quite happy with Networks (in plural) and I would prefer not
to see (an outdated) list of servers on this level. What is the
intention?

#3: It often takes several tries on each level to drill down to the
shared folders in the computers in the Windows workgroup. Eventually
they seem to turn up but the behavior is not pretty. Again, this is
after waking up from hibernation or stand-by. Once I've accessed all
computers in the workgroup, they don't go away.

I have the same behavior on two computers with very different hardware
configurations, one wired and one wireless, both running Hardy Heron.
Both have the latest updates.

What I expect to happen is that I in the top-level Network (again, I'd
prefer Networks, in plural) window only see networks and no servers.
When drilling down into the potentially several networks, I expect to
see an updated list of servers that are all on-line when the Windows
workgroup window is opened. And I expect this list be updated
immediately when something happens on the network.

Thanks,

Arto Jarvinen, Vreta kloster, Sweden

[Bug 248839] Re: List of network servers is not updated

2008-07-15 Thread ar-jar
Not sure if this is related but sometimes when I try to open a share, I
either get the message

Couldn't display smb://solbacka/www.
Error: Invalid argument
Please select another viewer and try again

The next type i try, gedit opens with the error message:

smb://solbacka/www is a directory. Please check that you typed the
location correctly and try again.

Now, if I right-click on the folder and explicitly open it with the File
Browser, then it opens up as it should. It seems that the file system
doesn't recognize the object type of the folder properly.

At the fourth try, it opens up properly just with a double-click as it
should.

2008-06-22 Thread ar-jar
As I wrote in my original description of the failure I sometimes (but not

I could read it for the first time. It says Sleep problem Your computer failed

that the hibernation worked fine. And this time I even got a visible password

[Bug 241862] [NEW] Unexpected abortion of program when switching between Internet radio stations

2008-06-21 Thread ar-jar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Rhythmbox aborts when repeatedly switching between some (but not all)
Internet radio stations.

It happens for instance when switching between mms://wm-live.sr.se/SR-
P3Svea-High and http://www.sky.fm/mp3/hit70s.pls, always when returning
to the P3Svea station. Restarting the P3Svea stations without playing
something else in between works fine. When starting the P3Svea channel,
the player restarts the buffering several times before it actually
starts to play which looks kind of odd.

I know something similar has been reported earlier but the tickets seem
closed.

This (unfortunately :-)) works fine in the same Ubuntu version that runs
on my old Intel-based laptop. The laptop doesn't exhibit the weird
restart of buffering when playing the P3Svea either. So this may be
hardware / architecture related. Or maybe I have managed somehow to
install different codecs on the two computers?

I'm running Rhythmbox 0.11.5-0ubuntu7 and all the latest updates of
Ubuntu 8.04 on an AMD Phenom 9750 system.

Happy to provide any assistance that may help you.

Thanks! /Arto

[Bug 241551] [NEW] Ubuntu 8.04 fails to resume from hibernation

2008-06-20 Thread ar-jar
Public bug reported:

When returning from hibernation, I get two different erroneous behaviors
depending on the graphics driver:
- With the NVidia native driver I eventually get a blank white screen where
there actually is a password textbox but I can only find it by moving the
cursor around (since everything is white). When typing in my password the
system resumes with a blank message box down to the right. I can't see what it
says but I guess it is a message box as it can be closed when (again blindly)
hitting the close icon.
- With the default graphics driver the system first shows the Ubuntu logo with
the boot progress bar end then hangs with an enlarged and down-shifted Ubunto
logo on the screen.

I'm running an AMD Phenom 9750 Quad-Core 2.4 GHz on a Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3
motherboard with a Gigabyte GeForce 8600GT graphics board.

2008-03-25 Thread ar
I have connected remotely to the broken machine.
After starting gdb, the command attach pid never completed
Tried Ctrl-C, with no effect
Xorg was meanwhile eating up 100% cpu.

thanks.

[Bug 201352] Re: [HARDY] X crashes randomly (i915)

2008-03-16 Thread ar
I don't seem to find a core dump in either /etc/X11/core or in /var/crash/ so
not sure how to get the backtrace. I followed the changes in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingXorg, i.e.:
changed the file /etc/default/apport to enabled=0

and added

Section ServerFlags
Option NoTrapSignals true
EndSection

to my xorg.conf

I attach the Xorg.0.log.old

The description of the problem is identical to wuddiwupp's

thanks

Re: Musique légale avec Linux

2006-08-09 Thread ar
HS.. mais c'est les vacances, non?

...
Comment faire pour télécharger et écouter légalement de la musique sur Linux ?

De la musique, mais laquelle? Celle du star-system (la musique des
johnnies) ou celle du régime de production et de consommation
alternatif, dite musique libre?

http://www.avrillavigne.com/music/index.jsp#

A+

Re: Programme pour le montage video

2006-07-26 Thread ar

Salut
