[Bug 599749] Re: User directory not writable and missing

2011-08-27 Thread arand
Hello, thanks for reporting this bug and helping to improve Ubuntu.

A new version of Assaultcube is available in the development release of
Ubuntu (Oneiric Ocelot), and this version hopefully addresses this
issue, I am therefore marking this bug incomplete.

Please test this latest version and re-open this bug if the issue still
remains.

[Bug 774516] Re: pango-graphite renders gdm unusable

2011-06-25 Thread arand
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, we think the bug has been fixed in a later version of Ubuntu
- Maverick Meerkat.
See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pango-graphite/+bug/540035 and
the links back to the upload in Debian, etc. for more info.

Please, if possible, test this in a later version of Ubuntu and see if
the issue still remains, and report back here.

If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please follow the
instructions for How to request new packages at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports#request-new-packages

I do no think that it is a small enough change to simply SRU (although I
thought so before {cf. my last comments on above bug}).
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

It may even be appropriate to completely remove the Lucid version of the
package from the archives as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/PackageArchive#Removing_Packages

[Bug 748340] Re: btrfsck fails with unsupported option features, must [ignore] to boot

2011-06-03 Thread arand
@John Lewis
I think compression cannot be an exclusive cause of the issue, seeing how me
and whakim have not touched compression and are seing this.
What does the btrfsck tool from debian unstable report in your case with you
compression setup, I would assume this might be different?
It could be that there are several issues all reporting the same nondescript
error.

Compression would be a very logical explanation though, if the userspace
fsck is simply outdated compared to the kernel btrfs code.

I still maintain that enabling btrfsck at all was a big mistake... I was
never meant to be used like this.

...I wonder if it wold be possible to reproduce this error using only
snapshots and balancing, since that would explain the non-compression
cases...

Public bug reported:

As far as I can tell what I'm seeing is the symptom of the gtk theme engine not
working properly, this is on a qemu-kvm instance, using unity-2d.

For reference, I had not touched any compression setting on my install

I am guessing that it is at least not directly related to compression...

I am in the process of upgrading to 1.1.0.4 in Debian, this will most
likely make it into the 11.10 release (and hopefully if .5 is released
soon-ish we could get that in before ubuntu goes frozen as well).

[Bug 759803] Re: Unity-2d not working on KVM

2011-04-28 Thread arand
This is a slight regression, I was able to run unity-2d without this particular
issue in version:
3.6.1-0ubuntu1

Using the cirrus video on 3.8.4.1-0ubuntu1 I get the same as shown in
above screenshot.

Using vga with 3.8.4.1-0ubuntu1, the gtk-engine seems to work alright however
the panels are still not:
The left panel flashes in solid white or is invisible constantly if using the
mouse within the VM, it calms down and ends up in the distorted state seen on
cirrus occasionaly, screenshot attached.

[Bug 748340] Re: btrfsck fails with unsupported option features, must [ignore] to boot

2011-04-27 Thread arand
I have confirmed with upstream that deleting a subvolume which has
subsequent snapshots IS supported

However, I was not able to reproduce this by some brief mucking about with
snapshots in a new kvm install.
(Replacing @/ with a snapshot and deleting the old (original) @/-subvolume.)

So presumably this does not (exclusively?) relate to deleting
snapshotted subvolumes.

[Bug 732149] Re: [natty] btrfs grub-probe: error: unknown filesystem

2011-04-19 Thread arand
If you are unable to boot as a result of similar symptoms as was seen in
this bug (which should be fixed by now, presumably, comment/report new
if not) there is a possible workaround to enable booting after the grub
config file has been written whilst grub-probe is unable to detect the
btrfs:

1. At the boot menu [e]dit the entry and look at the kernel line:
linux /vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic root=/dev/mapper/mellu-uburooot ro
rootflags=subvol=@ quiet splash vt.handoff=7

3. IF the rootflags=subvol=@ boot option is missing add it, and then
boot the command list using ctrl+x

4. Once booted make sure that grub-probe detects the btrfs OK and then
run update-grub.

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2011-04-18 Thread arand
** Description changed:

The items on the gnome panel is disordered in some cases, one of these
being changing the screen reolution, possibly other, more random, cases
  as well.

  -

  Temporary solution:
Backup the state of your panel:
- gconftool-2 --dump /apps/panel panel_backup.xml
+ gconftool-2 --dump /apps/panel panel_backup.xml

and then restore it whenever it gets messed up:
  gconftool-2 --load panel_backup.xml
killall gnome-panel (kills and auto-respawns, possibly need to run
gnome-panel as well)

  -

I have noticed for a while now that the above-mentioned phenomenon
occurs when I, say, return from a shut-down. However, the strange thing
is that it only happens on some occations. I don't really know what the
problem is, so I can't, unfortunately, post more information.

[Bug 757631] [NEW] grub-probe fails on lvm-encrypted install with btrfs

2011-04-11 Thread arand
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

Install was done using the Setup encrypted LVM option, simply changing
ext4-btrfs

Grub fails to add the rootflags=subvol=@ to the kernel boot options,
making the system stop at initramfs on boot, unless added manually, at
which point it seems to boot fine.

When booted grub-probe seems not to work, which I assume is the core issue:
arand@nnb:~$ sudo grub-probe /

[Bug 752506] Re: new -8 kernel makes update-grub ignore writing subvol option for btrfs

2011-04-07 Thread arand
It seems like somehow the trigger for this is the act of snapshotting...
In combination with reinstalling kernel packages?

I've bee using apt-btrfs-snapshot, hence why it was (though still is)
really tricky to pin down..

Aha!
It seems like sometimes, for some reason, reinstalling the kernel packages
renders grub-probe unable to detect the type of the filesystem for /, hence why
it doesn't writ the btrfs-related bootflag...

[Bug 732149] Re: [natty] btrfs grub-probe: error: unknown filesystem

2011-04-07 Thread arand
Just marked my Bug #752506 as a dupe of this.

I've had some luck reproducing this issue by repeatedly reinstalling the
linux-image-2.6.38-8-generic and linux-headers2.6.38-8-generic packages,
alternatively.

I've also quite often been able to get btrfs out of this un-probe-able state
by just creating a standard snapshot:
mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
btrfs subvolume snapshot /mnt/@ /mnt/@$(date +%s)

But as mentioned it comes and goes very randomly still.

I just tested updating btrfs-tools with the latest from
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/mason/btrfs-progs-unstable.git;a=summary
and now btrfsck seems to work fine.
I think the debian experimental version is similar, so syncing that might be
fitting?

[Bug 748340] Re: btrfsck fails with unsupported option features, must [ignore] to boot

2011-04-02 Thread arand
Semi-rectraction of previous statement:
Turns out the reason it was booting was simply that it was failing due to the
extra -a flag and skipping the fsck entirely.

I did not manage to apply the latest ubuntu change to the debian
experimental version (and I know to little to resolve the merge there I
think)

However, Simply grabbing the btrfsck binary from debian experimental and
running it alongside the ubuntu version on the latest liveCD, the ubuntu
one fails with the error above, whereas the debian exp succeeds to run
the fsck.

I've spoke to another user who did not seem to have these issues on the
current version so it seems it might be something to do with my
particular system..

When I run fsck using the debian experimental version of the userspace

Btrfs Btrfs v0.19

This is a fairly recent (few days) install, but what I have done so far
is taken snapshots of my / subvolume via apt-btrfs-snapshot, rolled
back to one of these snapshots, and deleted the old / subvolume along
with some apt-snapshots that I did not use.

So my guess is that btrfs doesnt like that I've removed my original /
subvolume, which is then what crashes current, and reports the above
erros in experimental btrfs-tools.

So updating to the newer version wouldn't make much of a difference in
practice, since mountall would still halt on these errors?

[Bug 729394] Re: partman fails to load during install on LVM systems

2011-03-13 Thread arand
I was able to reproduce this issue on a virtual KVM instance by creating
one singe primary partition, adding it as a physical volume, adding it
to a volume group, and then creating one logical volume spanning all
free extents.

At this point starting partman fails.

Then I ran a simple mkfs.ext4 on the before completely blank logical
volume.

At this point starting partman is succesful, and I was able to get past
the partitioning step and into the installing base system step (by
which time I exited the installer).

That's actually not so, I don't believe.  The only one of these three

And, aptitude has an advantage over vanilla apt-get in that it
remembers the difference between packages you have installed directly,
and those which were installed by the system in order to satisfy
dependencies.  If you later remove the packages that were installed
directly, then aptitude can also remove the other packages that were
installed to satisfy prerequisites (as long as nothing else is using
 them, of course).

Anyway, an unpacked aptitude package is less than 5M (aptitude itself is
 just 2.2M).

That's actually not so, I don't believe. Both apt-get and aptitude
does marking of auto-installed. It's just that you need to run apt-get
autoremove separately.
Aptitude + tasksel (dependency) is, in context, very big.

I do agree that aptitude is much superior, though not in those ways.

[Bug 395279] Re: directory for mount not completing

2010-06-27 Thread arand
Lucid
bash-completion: 1.1-3ubuntu2

I'm using this in my fstab:
# Manually added for automount of DATA partition
/dev/disk/by-uuid/A66C42F16C42BBB5 /media/DATA ntfs
defaults,gid=46,umask=007,group 0 0

And when using mount bash always completes to /media/DATA even though I have
several other folders in /media/ and even though I'm trying to mount something
new, and /media/DATA is already mounted.
I would agree that this behaviour is questionable.

Marking as confirmed.

Just tested on main Lucid system, and it works fine there, hence I would

Other factors that might make a difference is that the Maverick machine

[Bug 574287] Re: tasksel uninstalled my system!

2010-06-23 Thread arand
I've tested this on current Debian testing, and the problem exists, but
is less problematic, since there seems to be much less overlap in the
Debian tasks.

However one example is if the tasks: ~t^desktop. ~t^gnome-desktop and
~t^laptop, are installed and then the ~t^laptop task is removed. This will
result in the removal of e.g. wpasupplicant, network-manager and
network-manager-gnome, all of which are also a part of the ~t^gnome-desktop
task.
I will take this upstream to Debian.

I've been told that the package sets are indeed defined by tasksel,
hence the apt task would be invalid.

[Bug 540035] Re: gimp-2.6 crashed on launch with SIGSEGV in gr::GlyphInfo::logicalIndex()

2010-06-12 Thread arand
Updated version available from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/silgraphite/files/ fixes the issue both
on maverick and sid, a NMU has been sent to get the updated version
quickly into debian unstable, which should sync to maverick, by which
time we'll start worrying about fixing earlier versions of ubuntu as
well (either by updating, or removing, i guess).

Source for the new version in debian is available here:
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/p/pango-graphite/

I'm thinking I'll mark all earlier bug reports as a duplicate of this
one, just to collect some structure.

Testing on Maverick development release seems to indicate that only a
combination of some of the ttf-sil-* packages (e.g. doulos and

[Bug 592336] Re: Removal of aptitude from base installation

2010-06-10 Thread arand
Updated description with references to the decision.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: aptitude

It has come to our attention that the developers want remove aptitude
from the base installation again. Most of us that run a testing version
use aptitude safe-upgrade, in order to not break the installation when
upgrading new packages, especially when we've been notified of new
packages that could cause severe breakage. I find aptitude with it's
options is a very useful tool during testing, removing it will make the
  job a lot harder.
+
+ NOTES ON THE DECISION
+ (This is based on a conversation with Colin Watson on IRC and the references
given)
+ The initial rationale is basically size; approximately 2MB (which in the
scope of things are very precious on the liveCD) will be gained by removing
tasksel and aptitude.
+
+ The initial reason why aptitude was included in ubuntu was that the
+ desktop installer (ubiquity) depended on it, but now the desktop
+ installer has been rewritten to not require it unless in particular
+ cases, and hence it goes.
+
+ The alternate install CD will still install aptitude and tasksel, since
+ the debian-installer which is used in installation requires it.
+
+ Likewise the server install of ubuntu will still include it (presumably
+ also since it uses debian-installer)
+
+ This was part of the Maverick Spring Cleaning which was discussed during
UDS-M and is specified here:
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubu...pring-cleaning
+ As Install tasksel and aptitude dynamically
+
+ More info here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FoundationsT...SpringCleaning
+ We could substantially reduce the size of the minimal seed by installing
tasksel and aptitude dynamically, so that we don't end up with them on
live-installed systems. We will still need to keep tasksel in the server seed.

Okay, with the new version this change is in the e2fsprogs in Maverick.

I would argue that this is something that'd be worth an SRU, hence
subscribing sponsors and sru teams.

[Bug 510571] Re: Lucid guest won't boot with acpi in virtualbox

2010-06-05 Thread arand
@undefined:
Yes, I'm aware of that problem, but as stated earlier, it does not seem as
though the patch here fixes it, so presumably there are more issues in need of
addressing in the hardy version of virtualbox. And I really don't have many a
clue on how to do so.

Since the version in hardy is quite old there are a lot of revisions
that have gone into vbox since, and the way to solve it would be to
figure out what specific revision(s), presumably in addition to the ones
in this here patch, which does address the issue. Or simply request that
a later version of virtualbox be put in the -backports repository, which
may be added by users if need be.

I do not intend to poke any further in this matter currently.

[Bug 526849] Re: pastes to pastebin.com no longer work

2010-06-05 Thread arand
Well I've tested on both with success, however I was thinking it'd be
appropriate that someone confirmed it independently... I'm not sure
exactly how the policy goes there.

Also, regading Hardy.
One option would be to simply switch the default site to paste.ubuntu.com for
hardy, it's a horrible cop-out, but it's a very simplesafe change, I guess
{all other considerations ignored (fact that pastebin.com is the proper
default)}.

Re: Why do some updates skip proposed? (launchpad bug 589163)

 Hey all,

Quick question for anyone that can give a quick answer...

The kernel released for lucid last night (2.6.32-22.35) broke kvm
guests - prevented them from starting.

The kernel that was in proposed (2.6.32-22.33) has no problems.

Looking at launchpad it looks like 2.6.32-22.35 never hit proposed and
 went straight to updates/security:

 https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/2.6.32-22.35/+publishinghistory

Given that this broke KVM guests on an LTS release no less (and kvm is
pushed by Ubuntu as the virtualisation system to use) it presents a
 reasonably serious problem.

How did this get straight to release with no testing in proposed?

What is the point of having proposed for bug testing if a released
package never goes through it - especially for something as critically
important to the core system as the kernel?

Hopefully the issue can be fixed soon so those of us who use KVM on
Lucid are able to use the latest kernel with any bug fixes again..

As it is anyone with this issue cannot get a fix from Ubuntu as a
vendor for the following CVE's as they are part of the update that
 broke kvm:

 CVE-2010-0419
 CVE-2010-1162
 CVE-2010-1488
 CVE-2010-1148
 CVE-2010-1146
 CVE-2009-4537

And if they don't have the savvy (or are unwilling to run a 'proposed'
kernel) to obtain the 2.6.32-22.33 kernel directly from the launchpad
build page they will also be missing updates for launchpad bugs 526354
 and 567016.

 Any thoughts on this issue?

 Regards,

 James

As stated on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelUpdates:

* Security updates will be uploaded directly into -security without
other changes. This just requires a temporary GIT fork which will be
immediately merged back into the main branch for that stable release.

* Normal updates will be provided as pre-releases through the
kernel-ppa users PPA. At certain points those get made into proposed
releases which are uploaded to the proposed pocket. Then again they
have to get verified to fix the problems and not to cause regressions.

As far as I know, this applies to most security updates, skipping the
- -proposed step
Whether or not this policy is a good one, is a matter of discussion,
since it obviously failed this one.

Would more testing, which would mean a slower procedure for getting
the security fixes through, be a viable compromise in some cases? What
kind of testing is already in place by the security team? Could that
be expanded?

[Bug 588478] Re: RuntimeError: Can not find port of couchdb.

2010-06-02 Thread arand
Here, I do not have a .log.1 but only .log in that directory, and
what it shows is simply:

[Wed, 02 Jun 2010 20:14:25 GMT] [info] [0.2.0] Apache CouchDB has started on
http://127.0.0.1:36868/

Which I presume indicates that it started fine when the machine started.

There is no additional mention of anything, even if I try to launch
gwibber just now.
