[Bug 2064177] Re: Window borders and shadows missing from GTK3 dialogs (if autologin is enabled and Xorg is used)

2024-06-13 Thread florin
I wonder if the lack of borders does not cause the click problem.
Probably the click is calculated within the border and while there are
no borders, there is a problem so the click goes to the lower
window/object. There is quite a while without a solution, it is quite
annoying.

[Bug 2064177] [NEW] No windows margins, problems with detecting windows on clicks

2024-04-29 Thread florin
Public bug reported:

I have a fresh Ubuntu 24.04 instalation and some of the windows have a
few problems. Some are probably caused by theming, as the windows'
borders (or their color) makes them impossible to discern from the
background windows.

Just earlier I discovered another bug, related to detecting the click and
window I clicked. I am trying to see the sub-content of a software update but
the system reacts as I clicked the window below. In the recording you can see
this happening both with the Terminal and with Firefox.

I have plenty of screenshots and also a screen recording that show the bugs.

2024-03-04 Thread Florin Andrei
This has nothing to do with the shell. I've changed the shell to
/bin/bash, then `su - keystone` then `keystone-manage db_sync` and I
still get the error.

I'm stuck trying to install it on Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS.

Right now I have in reality more files on the Desktop created either by

[Bug 1949411] [NEW] GJS using lots of CPU resources non stop

2021-11-01 Thread florin
Public bug reported:

In my laptop, gjs is using lots of CPU resources (about 13% in my case) and I
cannot stop it. Keeping the mouse over it, it seems to be related to the
Desktop extension. I also attached a screeshot showing that. I tried Alt+F2 &
r, nothing changes in this regard; I tried disabling the extension and Alt+F2 &
r, nothing changes. Restart works.
When this happens, the mouse cannot interact with the desktop icons. For
instance, when I moved one file, it was still shown on the Desktop, although I
have already moved it with Nautilus/Files.

I have a theory: I use the desktop to temporary store files, also my
screen recording software creates the files on the Desktop. One time,
when I moved in Nautilus the file from the Desktop to my working
folders, this bug was triggered. Maybe it was a coincidence, but it sure
looked like that. My idea is that the extension does not properly work
with other programs interacting with the desktop and it somehow crashes
instead or re-scanning the files over there and paint them correctly.

[Bug 1925750] Re: Ubuntu 21.04 not loading correctly intel graphics driver

2021-04-27 Thread florin
Used to be Intel by default (not nvidia by default) until Ubuntu 21.04.
This time it changed and I did not know how to revert to intel drivers.
I uninstalled nvidia drivers, after restart it switched to nouveau
(still nvidia) and then I blacklisted the nouveau driver in the grub.
Probably there was some way to blacklist proprietary nvidia drivers,
too, but I got to that solution later :D

Proprietary nvidia drivers have this thing called Optimus where, if the
management app is installed, you can switch between nvidia and intel
graphics (unfortunately one has also to log out-log in, in Windows it
works without that), I did select Intel graphics but it does not use the
open source drivers from the kernel (or at least they work differently,
because I got the graphical glitches for Gnome Extensions window). Intel
open source drivers don't do that.

@Seth Forshee
Thank you for having a look, I have no idea how these work.

But shouldn't there be a way to select the Intel driver and be able to
use Wayland? If it is not there, how else do I do it?

[Bug 1925750] [NEW] Ubuntu 21.04 not loading correctly intel graphics driver

2021-04-23 Thread florin
Public bug reported:

I just installed Ubuntu 21.04 and have a problem: I cannot boot into
Wayland to test it (should be default in 21.04) because, for some
reason, my system does not correctly work with the graphics drivers. I
have nvidia+intel graphics on the laptop, but in the Additional Drivers
tab, I only have the Nvidia one showing. I installed mate-optimus to
have access to the nvidia settings and be able to change graphics from
there, that one seems to be working, but Wayland still does not show up
in the log in screen, maybe because it detected the kind of driver and
sees it is the nvidia one?

See the screenshot.

I have run some terminal commands, but I don't really understand them,
maybe the outputs helps you (from nvidia drivers the Intel graphics is
selected):

[Bug 1778932] Re: rsync can trigger system crash

2021-01-18 Thread Florin Petreus
Hi to all.
I know that is an old topic but today I faced an isue with rsync. After this
command " rsync -Aavx /var/www/html/nextcloud/
/mnt/backup/nextcloudbk/nextcloud-dirbkp_`date +"%Y%m%d%t"`/ " the ubuntu
server 20.04 has crashed. On every command the system response is " bash:
/usr/bin/'command': No such file or directory
". Nothing works any more. Is the secont time that happens to me. Last week,
it happend firs time and I don't realise that is rsync problem until I
reinstalled the server and I run this command again. I even can't go in log
file. Doesn't work any command. After reboot, ubuntu crashes on load.
I don't think it is a repair for this. And the work begin with the reinstall of
ubuntu.again.
Sorry for my english.

[Bug 1901137] Re: UEFI on Legacy - grub-install fails due to no space left on ESP

2020-11-15 Thread florin
I managed to run 20.10 after connecting to that installation from my
other running Ubuntu with chroot, installing net-tools (seemed to be
missing for some reason so I had no ifconfig) and then update + upgrade.
There was a kernel update and grub found what it needed to be able to
boot also 20.10.

[Bug 1901137] Re: UEFI on Legacy - grub-install fails due to no space left on ESP

2020-11-13 Thread florin
I know there is not much happening here, but anyone managed to install?
Should I select the /dev/sda6 partition for installing the grub (or
whatever it installs) - it is the partition I keep another Ubuntu
version (besides Windows) or it will mess up booting the laptop? Until
now, on both Ubuntu versions I keep I selected /dev/sda for installing
and worked every time, until 20.10. Thanks!

[Bug 1901137] Re: UEFI on Legacy - grub-install fails due to no space left on ESP

2020-11-04 Thread florin
I just tried the workaround tested by @Matt, to add the toram option on
booting the USB drive, but in my case, it did not work. Maybe "toram"
did not work, don't know how to test thst, but in my installation of
20.10 Ubuntu, I got the same grub intall failure. If it matters, I did
not remove the usb thumb drive. I will attach the messages during the
failure, in my case it seems to try installing EUFI, but my Bios is in
legacy mode.

[Bug 1902963] [NEW] Ubuntu 20.10 install fail because of grub install failure

2020-11-04 Thread florin
Public bug reported:

Installing latest Ubuntu 20.10, at the end, install grub fails and so
does the Ubuntu installation. I use legacy BIOS, not EFi, but for some
reason, in the installation EFI is mentioned. I tried also toram option
(but did not remove the USB drive I was installing from) to test what
some other user found to be a solution, for me, with USB drive in, it
did not work. I will be back with a photo of the messages.

[Bug 1901137] Re: UEFI on Legacy - grub-install fails due to no space left on ESP

2020-10-27 Thread florin
I have 3 OS's (Windows and last 2 Ubuntu's) on my first laptop hard drive
(SDD). Every 6 months (for the last few years) I had these actions: keep
Windows 10 that came with the laptop, keep the previous Ubuntu and install the
latest formatting the partition with the ones 2 launches away. This time it did
not work, for the first time, so it is something only related to 20.04 version.
(my BIOS is in legacy mode)

It says that fix is commited, does it mean it will go into the Ubuntu .iso so
we can install it?
Thank you for trying to fix for the noobies!

[Bug 1901362] [NEW] Unable to install grub - Ubuntu 20.10 installation fail

2020-10-24 Thread florin
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 20.10 fails installing because just at the end of the
installation, grub-install /dev/sda fails without any obvious reason. I
have both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20.04 on the drive and had many previous
versions before. It is the first time I get this error and I am glad I
did foresee problems, always keeping another version of Ubuntu.

This is a Toshiba laptop about 4 years old, usually everything works
flawless on it.

although it is not reliable like this, it should work. I want to help

since I had the bug, I updated the kernel serveral times + I changed to
the latest release so I am not sure if the steps above should be the
same for getting some good logs.

2020-05-05 Thread florin
I have updates, after some more use. For some reason, I can now connect
to the 5GHz network, don't know why, didn't do anything myself.

I have updated to Ubuntu 20.04, but both 19.04 and the latest release
work the same.

The problem is that I cannot connect to the 2.4 GHz now. So, once it was
able to connect to one of them, it cannot connect to the other. The
phone can do it without problems, so it is not a router problem for
sure. I will also do the commands above, but have lots of meetings and
cannot focus right now.

[Bug 1875038] Re: Lock screen not really functioning - Gnome Shell extensions visible and active even in lock screen

2020-04-28 Thread florin
I have had this discussion with Gnome Shell developers when I first saw
the bug, some versions behind, they see it as a feature, not as a bug.
It is like fighting the wind over there. In the real world, where people
expect computers and OS's to do what they say they do, a lock screen is
supposed to lock access. Whatever else is running behind, access should
be restricted, otherwise, it is worthless as a secure OS and lock
screen. I know this should be on Gnome Shell developers, but as Ubuntu
joined the boat using it, it becomes a problem for Ubuntu, too. I am
tired of posting bugs on Gnome bugzilla because it is difficult, close
to impossible to fight them (a lost fight was there to add back file
sorting by extension in search, for instance).

I know, but does that matter? Lock screen should be over every piece of
soft, "locking" the access to computer unless you insert the password.

I have done the next:
1. Added the -d parameter:
sudo gedit /lib/systemd/system/wpa_supplicant.service
ExecStart=/sbin/wpa_supplicant -d -u -s -O /run/wpa_supplicant

2. sudo nmcli general logging level debug domain all

Is there something else I can do for debugging this? I am even willign to allow
someone to my computer via Teamviewer, if this could help.

I have to tell that the Wifi works, but not completely, I am on the 5GHz
connection. In the harware list it shows as in the screenshot.

[Bug 1863466] [NEW] Libre office writer font rendering bug

2020-02-16 Thread florin
Public bug reported:

This is a very old bug, I have reported it some time ago and was replied
that maybe I did something, but as I could see it active some versions
later, I wanted to get back. I have not changed the settings of Libre
Office (Write) and get this rendering bug. I have uploaded
(https://youtu.be/ImIl4idb7So) a screen recording. I do think that I
don't have a native Arial font installed, but the rendering problem
should never occur either way. Selecting the badly rendered text moves
the problem below. Scrolling so that text is out of the screen also
changes the rendering problem.

[Bug 1792085] Re: Regression: MTP not working/very slow

2020-02-03 Thread florin
@lancillotto Sorry for the noob question, I am trying to install it, but
don't make it.

I did like the above .16 version, which worked, but this one does not.

tar xzf libmtp-libmtp-1-1-17.tar.gz
cd libmtp-libmtp-1-1-17/
./configure
bash: ./configure: No such file or directory

Should I have done something else? Thanks!

@jeff - for me it does not work your solution, maybe it is related to

[Bug 1848953] Re: Intel wifi 3165 [8086:3165] subsystem id [8086:4010] not working properly in Ubuntu 19.10

2020-01-01 Thread florin
@You-Sheng Yang (vicamo) - I have tried, it still cannot connect to the
2.4 GHz. I cannot see any visible difference, in additional drivers list
the card is grayed. If you need to run commands for debugging, I am
willing to help, just post sufficient detailed posts so I can run the
commands.

Sorry for the question, but I am not sure how to do that. I see folders
with drivers and files over there, how should I do it? Copy the content
of some of them (I would guess Intel and what else?) in some folder?
Thanks!

2019-12-18 Thread florin
@Kai-Heng Feng
I get nothing on that command ("dkms status"). I did lots of the things above,
including installing kernels, dkms, removing dkms, etc. They might have been
contradictory, but either way, in my case, nothing happened, the driver was
always grayed and cound not connect to the 2.4GHz (5 GHz works even with the
card grayed in that list of proprietary drivers).

@Serghei and @John Brown - I am curious, in your proprietary drivers
list (Additional Drivers), do you have the Intel card active and
enabled? In my laptop, Intel 3165 is grayed and bellow it, it says The

[Bug 1851964] [NEW] Volume indicator lags behind scroll action to change volume

2019-11-09 Thread florin
Public bug reported:

Changing the volume with the help of the mouse/touchpad, scrolling on
top of the sound icon used to work fine in the older versions of gnome
shell. In Ubuntu 19.10, it does not. I scroll, but the graphic indicator
that shows on the screen lags behind, even jumps. If needed, I could try
to record it as video. There is definitely some performance issue over
there.

3. Restarted
4. Tested the kernel and tried to connect the 2.4 GHz network.

5. Cannot connect 2.4, then it connects automatically to the 5 GHz.
Cheked, in the additional drivers list it looks like a not functional wifi
card, just like before. In Ubuntu 19.04 it worked, BTW, something changed
meanwhile.

Does the order of the above things to do matter (dkms+driver first try,

Not sure if I had to do something else, but I also installed 2 kernels

1) Link:
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/2019-10-22/

linux-modules-5.4.0-997-generic_5.4.0-997.201910212203_amd64.deb

2) Link: https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.4-rc4/
linux-headers-5.4.0-050400rc4_5.4.0-050400rc4.201910202130_all.deb
linux-headers-5.4.0-050400rc4-generic_5.4.0-050400rc4.201910202130_amd64.deb
linux-image-unsigned-5.4.0-050400rc4-generic_5.4.0-050400rc4.201910202130_amd64.deb
linux-modules-5.4.0-050400rc4-generic_5.4.0-050400rc4.201910202130_amd64.deb

After restarting the laptop, neither can connect to the 2.4 GHz connection.
Had a look at the list with external drivers, shows as not functional card, but
5 GHz connection works fine, just like before installing those drivers.

Should I do something else? Thanks.

I just tried the PPA and installed that driver. Although it sees the driver as
functional in the external drivers' list, now, nothing works. I cannot connect

5GHz connection. I have 2 screenshots.

[Bug 1848953] Re: Intel wifi 3165 not working properly in Ubuntu 19.10

2019-10-23 Thread florin
This takes forever and nothing works. Trying to connect it, the 5GHz
connection disappears after a while and then appears again, tries to
connect it, etc. So it does not work with the backported driver from
PPA.

** Attachment added: "ubuntu 19.10 intel 3165 wifi card not connecting even to

[Bug 1848953] [NEW] Intel wifi 3165 not working properly in Ubuntu 18.10

2019-10-20 Thread florin
Public bug reported:

I have a clean install of the latest Ubuntu, 19.10, but since the live usb, a
bug appeared.
I could not login to the 2.4 GHz Wifi network at home with the fresh installed
Ubuntu, it says the password is wrong, but it is not.

I have Dual Band Intel AC 3165 it seems. My card appears in the
Additional Drivers list with the notice that the device is not working.
I can connect the 5 GHz wifi, but not the 2.4 GHz. See the attached
screenshot.

[Bug 1832998] Re: Pure-FTPd Breaks with OpenSSL v1.1.1

2019-10-12 Thread Florin
Should we expect a new version of pure-ftpd for 18.04 any time soon?
Angry clients using filezilla are stressing me every day. :)
If not possible, will need to use a workaround of the ones mentioned in
comments #8 or #14 to update production servers.

2019-10-08 Thread Florin
@Dimitri John Ledkov (xnox)

Thank you for jumping into this.

To test for comment #14, I updated openssl.cnf on Ubuntu 18.04 to use
maximum TLS v1.2 (using the configs from the patch provided there) and
it seems pureftpd is working now with latest filezilla client.

[Bug 1560286] Re: Evince displays pdf file fine, but prints colors inverted

2018-11-30 Thread florin
I add a pdf I get this in Ubuntu 18.10. Printing page 7 (and on), images
look inverted. Only images, text is good. I printed as PDF and they turn
dark (inverted I guess). Then I printed as Postscript (.ps) and they
look fine, so a workaround would be to print files as postscript and
then print them on the paper, but it is not a real solution.

Worked also on Ubuntu 18.10.

To reply to @Steve Langasek (@vorlon) - Why do we need to install the
HPLIP from HP? In my case, I could not select if to print in color or
black or grayscale, this option was simply missing for some
reason.

[Bug 1799542] Re: Cannot drag and drop into Snap installed GIMP

2018-10-24 Thread florin
It works, thank you. But..

But the thing is that on Android, the other place where most of us need
to set permissions for an app, we get the OS popping some window and
saying that the app needs some permission to work properly. This can be
asked at the moment when the app tries to access some resource it cannot
access. The firewalls I used do the same, they detect some software
connecting to some port and they ask the user what to do: allow or do
not allow (remember answer, ignore, etc.).

This would be nice to have in Ubuntu, too.

Meanwhile, thank you.
PS: Not knowing this, I had to install the GIMP PPA for having the latest
version, so I have 2 versions now, the one from PPA and the one from Snapstore.
Is there some way to know which is which when starting them? Thanks.

2018-10-23 Thread florin
Public bug reported:

I am trying to use snap apps as much as possible because of the
advantages, mainly the non -overlapping packages item, but right now I
got into something that I expect to work, but it does not: drag and
dropping into GIMP.

See the attached screenshot to get the error message I got in GIMP and
the path in the ksysguard, to make sure it is a snap piece of software.

[Bug 1772760] Re: Touchpad slows down and then stops working

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Cannot find a reason, but sometimes once a day, sometimes twice a day,
my touchpad starts to work slowly, like jumping, and after a few
seconds, it completely stops working. At some point, I did something
with Terminal and it started working, but cannot reproduce it. The only
thing that seems to be really working is to Suspend laptop and come back
in Ubuntu (or restart, but that means to close everything + it takes
more time). While I wrote this text, it seems to have recovered by
itself, it is working right now, but this is unreliable and cannot be
used in production (what about stopping it during a presentation, cannot
suspend in a meeting). Hopefully, it is some kernel problem, as I
  reported kernel package.

[Bug 1767494] Re: Some Gnome Shell extensions are visible and active in Lock Screen

2018-04-30 Thread florin
A have reported it to Gnome and also to the developer. It is nice to
know that there seems to be no safety involving extensions so they could
disable locking the screen or maybe auto-unlocking it. Just like Android
would allow users to install external .apk files without even making you
manually accept it is an external and not validated app. :))

I got it, this is not about Ubuntu, but I wanted Ubuntu to know how this
behaves. The developer said it might be an incompatibility with Ubuntu
Dock, which could be as UD does not start after activating the other
one.

Imho, Gnome should cover everything on screen with this unlock screen
and not allow anything else but the desired actions to be active (log
in, turn off maybe, time, some info). Anything else is not really good
design. But this is maybe just in my mind :)

[Bug 1767494] [NEW] Some Gnome Shell extensions are visible and active in Lock Screen

2018-04-27 Thread florin
Public bug reported:

This is a bad Gnome Shell security flaw. When the screen is locked,
nothing should be available. But I see the Dash do Dock extension and I
can even start applications from it. Even though I cannot see the apps
running, but when I unlock, I can see them. This is a huge security risk
and should be fixed asap in Gnome. This is both in Ubuntu 17.10 and
18.04.

I have reported upstream, too:

[Bug 1749714] [NEW] Cannot show misspelled wifi password

2018-02-15 Thread florin
Public bug reported:

The so-called upgrade to Gnome Shell came with some pretty bad things
also for wifi management.

One of the bad things is that one cannot know what introduced in the
wifi password text box. There is not "show password" option to actually
see what we introduced over there, like in any other OS (Windows, Ubuntu
with Unity, Android, etc.).

I have made this comparision video between Unity and Gnome Shell:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2UbE2xh1Q0

Also, it removed some extremely useful things:
- it takes about 3 times longer to connect to Wifi
- you click a lot more times for that

[Bug 1672297] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time

2018-02-12 Thread florin
It might be more complicated to fix as there are lots and lots of
actions that get to memory leaks. There are some crashes, too. Bad
programming, probably, and it might need some fundamental changes in the
code and architecture. They are creating lists and objects that are
larger and larger on each trigger, without killing any when they are not
needed or having a limit to recycle resources. And if they got to this,
it might be complicated to find solutions with the same team that
created it. I kind of doubt we'll see a solution before the next
release.

[Bug 1672297] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time

2018-02-08 Thread florin
Yes, I got some freezes, too, even longer than 10 seconds. One time I
restarted the laptop as I did not know what is going on, another time at
some point Gnome crashed and started by itself. This did not happen in
Unity.

[Bug 1731071] [NEW] Gnome shell huge memory usage

2017-11-08 Thread florin
Public bug reported:

I have no idea why, but after half a day or so of usage, gnome-shell
uses 1.4 GB of memory. I have never seen an OS where the shell is so
"hungry", there seem to be lots of memory leaks. Good the system has 12
GB of RAM, otherwise I would have lots of swap. Unity never did not do
things like this, I really hope there will be a fix soon.

[Bug 1730871] [NEW] Close lid action missing in Ubuntu 17.10

2017-11-07 Thread florin
Public bug reported:

I tried to set my laptop not to suspend when closing the lid, I want it to
download some files and not have the lid open, but it seemed to be impossible,
there is no option for that. I have no idea why not, all OS have this and it
is a basic function for a laptop many change it depending on the temporary
needs.
A simple select option in Power should exist.

I already filed a Gnome bug here:
