Hi All,

Yesterday I formatted my HDD accidentally . I had win xp and Mint installed.
The issue is now my HDD is raw. I have some docs and photos which I really
want back. Is their any tool which I can use with any live CD of Ubuntu to
recover my data and partitions. Please help me.

[ubuntu-in] Off Topic: Need help with LAN card Issue

Hi All,

I know this is an off topic question, but I need to solve it. So, the issue
is I have a laptop which I use to download stuff. The issue is when
sometimes the power goes the LAN card automatically disables. And when the
power comes back I manually have to again enable it. I am using XP. I have
tried Googleing it but not able to find a solution. If anyone knows a tool
or a setting I have to change or make please tell me.

[ubuntu-in] Off Topic Help needed

Hi All,

I need some help with my LAN card. From past few weeks in my area we are
facing frequent power cut. These power cut happens just for 5-10 min at
least 5 times in 24 hrs. My problem is when the power comes back my laptop's
LAN card won't work. I manually have to disable it and again enable it to
make it work. My question is why is this happening? Do I have to update my
LAN driver or change any settings. I am running XP. If anyone knows what is
the issue please help me with it.

[ubuntu-in] Need to know about Ubuntu based tool for IP based cameras

Hi All,

One of my friend is working on a security system installation in Hyderabad.
He has few iCanView340  from
iCantek.com. These are IP based cameras. He got the required software for
it. But the only thing is its a window based software. I want to know if he
can run the software in Linux (Ubuntu). Is their any software which can
replace the original software build for windows. Also, if possible can we
run the windows installer using WINE on ubuntu? Please help us.

[ubuntu-in] Off Topic: Running Laptop/Desktop for a long time?

Hi All,

This is just off topic, but I have just noticed that my laptop is running
from 3 days and 2 hrs. My question is will it affect on my laptop's hardware
compenets or not? Will it be harmful for a laptop or a desktop to run for a
long time? I know it depends on temperature, but its raining from past 4
days in Hyderabad so its pretty much cool here.

[ubuntu-in] Help in Home Networking

Hi All,

How are you doing? I hope everyone is happy with new version of Ubuntu
10.04. Anyways I need some help with home networking. I have a BSNL
broadband connection. I recently bought a switch as well. Now I have 2
different systems and a laptop that want to connect with each other. I have
successfully connected systems with each other. I can able to access the
shared files and folders from each other. What I need is to share internet.
I am unable to share internet connection with each other. I can only able to
use internet on my laptop. I am unable to use internet on my 2 other
desktops. I have tried the manual IP conf, and stuff like that. My OS is
Ubuntu Studio. Also, one more thing that I am able to access the router
settings (192.168.1.1) from other 2 desktops but not the internet.

Please help me :)

Hi All,

I have been looking this media conversion topic in few past email. So, I
guess people are confused with media conversion esp converting MP3 or more
detail any DVD video into AVI format. Here is the legal points which you
should remember while converting any media. You can convert any audio or
video to any format as long as you have the original audio/video with you.
Let me put it with an example: You have 10 audio CD with you and you want to
listen those songs in your car/mp3 player/ipod etc. In this case you can
convert all those 10 CD's to MP3 and carry only one CD/DVD with you instead
of carrying all 10 CD/DVD. The same rule apply with video as well. If you
have original DVD video with you and you just want to watch it on your
Desktop/Laptop you can convert it in AVI format and watch it lets say  while
you are traveling. But in India people say their is no rule for media
conversion which is totally wrong. However no one will come and catch you
with those converted CD's or DVD's as long as you are not selling it
publicly. But giving my experience their are rules for media conversion as
well. So, if you are using any MP3 or AVI for your home purpose don't worry
:)

[ubuntu-in] Need Help with WINE & Tally 9.2

Hi All,

My friend has 20 systems and he works with tally for most of the time. He
wants to switch to Ubuntu/Linux from windows. I have tried to install Ubuntu
and using Wine I have installed Tally 9.2. Everything is working fine except
that when I start Tally its taking a long time to load and its impossible to
use it in that way.

I have tried on 2-3 different systems with wine but didn't worked. Is their
any other tool with which I can use tally in Ubuntu. Also, if anyone know
any other package which could replace Tally in Ubuntu with the same features
as Tally 9.2? Please help me.

But I think Ubuntu guys have to change their policy. Because in India their
are only few people who knows about Ubuntu or Linux. So, I think using
Ubuntu or Linux logo on a Tshirt is an awesome idea to promote Ubuntu. Also,
if they don't want to change their policy then they should sell Tshirst
according to Indian currency. I think one Tshirt should not be more then
Rs.300-500. Otherwise I don't think anyone will purchase those Tshirts.
Infact 2 years back I also tried to get one but the rate was too high and I
thought I could get 2 Tshirts in this cost. What do you think guys??

[ubuntu-in] Need Help in installing Dual OS without any Optical drive

Hi All,

I need some help regrading OS. I have an Acer aspire one laptop and it dose
not have an optical drive. So, every time when I have to install XP and
Ubuntu Grub I have to plug in my DVD drive. However the problem is that my
DVD drive is not working anymore and if I have to reinstall either XP or
Ubuntu I have to  borrow a DVD drive from my friend. However I need some
kind of arrangement with which I don't have to borrow anything from my
friend again and again. I have 2 USB pen drive with me and I know how to
install Ubuntu using a pen drive. I just want to know how to install XP
using a pen drive. I have tried all the methods that you get when you Google
the  keywords like "how to install xp using a pen drive". I need some kind
of concrete solution.

Please help me.

[ubuntu-in] Issue with GRUB and MBR

Hi,
I have installed XP on my ubuntu system. Now XP removed my GRUB. So, I tried
to install it again but the Ubuntu setup says that unable to install it
because of some kind of MBR issue. Can someone tell me how to force install
the GRUB in MBR.

Hi,

My suggestion is to add a feature like system restore which a user can
restore his system from OS just like XP. I know there is a feature in all
Ubuntu distors, but currently user have to restore his system using the
CD/DVD media. Its better to include this restore feature within the OS.
Also, if possible please make this restore more easier for a new Ubuntu
user. I will think of more Ideas. Lets make Ubuntu Better :)

[ubuntu-in] Need to install previous updates

Hi,

I had Ubuntu Studio installed on my system. Now I have removed and Installed
it again. But before I did that I took a backup of update folder
'/var/cache/apt/archives'  where system downloaded all its updates. Now I
want to install all updates again but I don't want it to connect with
internet and take much time. So, is their anything can install all updates
all at once instead of clicking on one by one??

[ubuntu-in] Graphic driver issue

Hi,

I have a laptop with Intel VGA adapter. I have installed ubuntu on it. My
question is that when my graphic adapter is Intel based then why ubuntu
installed the ATI drivers automatically. Of-course all the desktop effects
are working well but why it installed the ATI graphic drivers instead off
Intel graphic drivers.

Hi All,

I have found the solution for my problem.

First unmount all the drives from the computer.
second launch the command line. then type "sudo -i"

then you will be enter in the root access.

then type " mount -rw /dev/sda5"

there you go 

Now you will have the write access for that drive.

Looks like your boot sector is locked by some other OS. Tell me one thing,
while installing Ubuntu have you seen that Ubuntu setup asked you about
boot/GRUB option?

Other suggestion is that install Interpeid Ibex from the boot menu instead
of first starting it from the DVD and then install it. Hope it will work :)

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the responses. However if you want me to install KDE using
kubuntu or using ubuntu responsibility then what is the use of experimenting
with ubuntu? I hope you will take my efforts as a challenge. I just want to
say that anyone can install KDE using kubuntu and all, but then how will we
able to know the nity-grity of ubuntu and its kernel??

Please don't take me otherwise as I am a kind of experimental person.
