Re: [ubuntu-in] BSNL Broadband conncetion in ubuntu 9.10
Dear brother Sambit Bikash Pal, Namaskar. Narendra bhai shared his knowledge about Offline package installation. But i didn't try it. B/c i got one cyber cafe where computers were conncected with each other through networking and it was not wifi but manually they had connected their computers. They gave me wire to put in our lan port. When i connceted then without delay it was online. It showed auto etho connection active. So i downloaded all packages and updated computer. And everything is all right now. According to your suggestion i checked hardware drivers and it showed Broadcom B43 wireless driver. I clicked on activate . then driver was downloaded and installed. And now it is showing activated. I will go to that other cybercafe where everything is wifi and see how it works. many many thanks to all brothers who shared their knowledge and donated their valuable time to fix my problem. Pls tell me which driver i have to install. I am using Dell laptop latitude D400. In order to install the driver for wifi, first get connected to the net using your Airtel connection (don't worry, the driver is quite small in size, it will not take much time). Then go to System -- Administration -- Hardware drivers You will get a list of proprietary drivers that are available for your system. I guess Dell Latitude D400 uses Broadcom wifi card. Select the Broadcom STA driver and click activate. It should download and install the driver on your system. Restart your computer. Wifi should work. Please try this out. Well you are absolutely right that Ubuntu should automatically do these things, so that the user doesn't need to worry about these little issues. However the problem in this case is not with Ubuntu. Broadcom is not kind enough to provide GNU GPLed (sorry, but in case you don't know what it is -- it is a software license that allows free distribution/development of the software, read more about this here if you want - http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html) drivers. The current drivers that are available for Broadcom are proprietary, which restricts their free distribution as well as development. For example computers having wifi card from Intel, generally work out of the box, since Intel releases open source drivers for most of their hardwares. These open source drivers can be included in the default installation, since there is no issue with the distribution of such drivers. Anyway please mail us, if you come across any issue while installing the drivers. According to what I found in the terminal window output, I changed the modem's address from ttyACMO to ttySLO. I went back to the wvdial.conf file and changed the modem's address there. Now when I go into a terminal window and type wvdial, it recognizes the modem and tries to go online. There are three initialization strings. The third one is specific to the LG LST-260B modem. The first two initialization strings work fine. But the third one--which is specific for the LG LST-260B and which I got from the above How-To, is not working. Here is what the terminal output looks like: -- WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60 -- Cannot get information for serial port. -- Initializing modem. -- Sending: ATZ ATZ OK -- Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 C1 D2 +FCLASS=0 ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 C1 D2 +FCLASS=0 OK -- Sending: at+crm=1;at$lgpkt=3 at+crm=1;at$lgpkt=3 ERROR Bad init string. So it looks like that final initialization string (at+crm=1;at$lgpkt=3) is not correct. Although that is the very string given in the tutorial. (The initialization command for LG CDMA LST-260B is *at+crm=1;at$lgpkt=3*). So it seems I am just at the final step. But once the installation is complete, it says that to go online, in terminal one should type wvdial. When I do that, I get the reply: WvDial*1: WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.56 WvDialErr: Cannot open /dev/ttyACMO: No such file or directory But when I browse to the above-list location (/dev/ttyACMO), there is indeed a file there by that name. So I do not understand why it has not worked. Did you write it correctly in the configuration file as ACM0 (the last character is zero, not o). You are quite insightful! I did use O and not zero. But anyhow, once I changed the address from ttyACMO to ttyLSO (as I mentioned in a later note), then it recognized it. But the initialization string is not working. Do you think the initialization string is not working because of the name of the modem I am using? Anyhow, I will now trying using the ACM0 with the zero, and again try the initilization string. But someone, it does not seem to me that this will solve the initialization string problem. I will let you know in a moment. Try http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/showthread.php?p=876989 I have gotten one step further. If I can provide the correct initialization string, it should accept it and connect, go on line. If anyone can help me in this final step, it will be great. I will also add the following: In windows, the initialization string for this modem is at+crm=1 e.g. the last half of the string given for use in ubuntu, is not there in windows. I have been using this very modem with Win XP for the last number of months, and it works just fine with the initialization string at+crm=1. So I tried removing the last half (;at$lgpkt=3) in the wvdial.conf file, and made the initialization string just as the windows one. But still I got the same error which appears above when using the initialization string given in the tutorial (at+crm=1;at$lgpkt=3). If I can get the correct initialization string, that should solve the problem. Suranjan -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

According to the tutorial, it should be the last four digits of the phone number, which is what I put in the conf file. But I should add here that in Windows, the password and username are both the ENTIRE phone number (excluding the first zero). So I tried changing the password to the entire phone number in this way, but still I got the same error message as appears above. What do you think can be the problem? [ubuntu-in] How to re-compact a .gz folder once I extract it?
Hello all, I have successfully set up SCIM as well as the Hindi aspell spell-checker to work with it. Now I just need to open the main Hindi word list (of the spellchecker) in order to edit it. That word list is in the file hi.cwl.gz. I can use archive manager to extract it to hi.cwl, and from there I know how to open it and edit it, and then I just need to know what is the command to recreate the hi.cwl.gz from hi.cwl. If someone can tell me this command (to go from hi.cwl to hi.cwl.gz), then I will be able to do my work. Thanks! Maybe the phone number is different for VSNL? Since that tutorial is for BSNL That tutorial is for BSNL, and BSNL is exactly what I have. My modem says BSNL on the front of it. And on the back it says LG CDMA Fixed Wireless Terminal, model LST-260B. That is exactly what the tutorial is for. And when I do uvdial in a terminal window, it DOES connect as you see in the above terminal output. So I think the phone number is fine. Otherwise it would not give the CONNECT response, as it did (see above terminal window output) -- and it detects the carrier as well. But after it Connects, then it does not seem to get permission to finalize the PAP (Password Authentication Protocol). So it seems more like a password issue. According to the tutorial, the password should be the last four digits of the phone number. My phone number is 06183-290080. This is the phone number that came with the LG BSNL modem I describe above. So given all this, what is your thought as to what I need to change to get on-line? It seems like there is just one last thing that is needed in order for this to work. Suranjan Buxar, Bihar If you are using Ubuntu(Gnome) then follow the steps mentioned below. 1. Open Nautilus File Manager and browse to the folder which contains the file hi.cwl 2. Right click on it and select Create Archive from the menu. 3. Change the archive type/extention from default tar.gz to .gz. 4. Click create. A new .gz file will be created. -- Alternatively you can use gzip command to create a .gz archive. Use terminal and change to the directory where your file hi.cwl is located and then give below command. $ gzip -v hi.cwl Option -v is for verbose output. However using gzip command replaces your original file with the newly created .gz archive. Arpanji, Thank you very much. I do use Ubuntu gutsy (Gnome), and it sounds like what you have given is exactly what I need. It should work perfectly. For that you need to install the dictd, dict packages and dependencies (I use sudo apt-get install dictd dict). And then install the free dictionaries you want, for example, for the above mentioned dictionaries you'd run the following command: sudo apt-get install dict-freedict-eng-hin dict-freedict-hin-eng And then at the shell prompt you can use dict -d fd-eng-hin word for English to Hindi. Getting SCIM to work is a bit of work, but I have also used the link provided by Mehul Ved in response to your query and it should work. Yes, the link which Mehul Ved gave for setting up SCIM worked perfectly. Mehul jii, many thanks for this useful information. And the info you gave for setting up the spellchecker also worked perfectly. Moz, I will look into what the dictd server is, and try to learn about it. Just now it is not yet quite clear for me. But it sounds like what you have given may also be very helpful in the future for me. Suranjan -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
[ubuntu-in] hello! new to list-- 3 questions
Hello there! My name is Suranjan, and I am just new to Linux. I am a college professor in Buxar, Bihar and am interested in spreading the news about Linux to all the professors, staff, and students in our institution. I myself just recently learned about Linux, and am keenly interested. I have been searching an alternative to windows for a long time, and feel I have finally found the answer here in Ubuntu. I do have three questions, the first of which is critical. If someone is able to guide me about the second two as well, it will be a very great help to me. 1. My internet connection is WLL, which is provided by VSNL. Kindly guide me as to how to configure my Ubuntu (version 7.10, Gutsy) so that I can get on line. Is any special software needed? The connection is via USB port. 2. SCIM is present in Gutsy, and I would like to use it with Hindi. I have located the setup utility in System - Preferences, but cannot get the actual program to open. According to the setup utility, the program should be triggered to open upon hitting shift-space or ctrl-space, but upon doing so nothing happens. Even when a text file is open. 3. I have tried to install a linux spell-checker for use with Hindi which is supposed to work in Ubuntu. It is called aspell6-hi-0.02-0, and installs in terminal using the commands ./configure, make, and sudo make install. The configure command works fine, but when I give the make command, I get an error Nothing to be done for `all', as seen below. Please kindly guide as to how to correct this so that the make command will work. :~/Desktop/aspell6-hi-0.02-0$ ./configure Finding Dictionary file location ... /usr/lib/aspell Finding Data file location ... /usr/lib/aspell :~/Desktop/aspell6-hi-0.02-0$ make make: Nothing to be done for `all'. :~/Desktop/aspell6-hi-0.02-0$ Many thanks, Suranjan Buxar, Bihar -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

Hello to all, Regarding SCIM I should also add that although SCIM is already present, but m17n is also needed in order to use the hi-baraha.mim typing schema. When I opened Synaptic Package Manager and selected m17n to be downloaded and installed, it downloaded-- but during install gave the message that the installation was only partially done because msttcore fonts: these fonts were provided by Microsoft in the interest of cross platform compatibility. This is no longer the case, but they are still available from 3rd parties. The m17n folder is nonetheless appearing at the location /usr/share/m17n. And there I pasted the file hi-baraha.mim. I have provided the above information in case it may explain why SCIM does not open when giving the trigger command ctrl-space. Many thanks, Suranjan Buxar, Bihar -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
