[Bug 303068] Re: Static IP ethernet network setting is lost after reboot

2009-03-05 Thread troutmask
I'm afraid I've ditched Ubuntu and gone back to Fedora 9. Fedora 9
network configuration works fine and, although the VPN client is not
quite as easy to use as that on the Ubuntu gnome network-manager it
always works with eth0 configured to a static address. On a differeet
issue, cron also always works on Fedora 9 which it doesn't on Ubuntu
8.04/8.10

[Bug 303068] Re: Static IP ethernet network setting is lost after reboot

2009-02-02 Thread troutmask
I have exactly the same problem. I have created a separate connection,
other than auto eth0. If I select this manually it is fine but on a
reboot the dhcp auto eth0 is connected as default. I want to know how to
configure the network settings so that my manually created connection is
the default and not auto eth0. It is not acceptable to have to manually
select the interface. Note: Martin Mai's last comment (2009-01-14) says
that this is fixed in the final release of network-manager 0.7 but that
this is not shipping with release 8.10. I don't want to have to upgrade
to solve this issue.

This bug report is being closed due to your last comment regarding
  this
being fixed by changing network settings using the method expected by
Network Manager. With regards to your question about making comet the
default connection, I believe this is addressed by bug 303068
(https://launchpad.net/bugs/303068). Please feel free to subscribe to
that bug and comment further there. Thank you again for taking the
  time
to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Feel free to
submit any future bugs you may find.

Re: [Bug 318437] Re: gnome network manager - setting static ip

2009-02-01 Thread troutmask
Hi

Many thanks for that. I created a new network connection (called comet)
and set a static Ip address for that. I can connect to comet and it works
fine: the static IP is saved and my VPN client connects to my work VPN.
However, when I reboot the machine it always starts up connected to eth0.
I intend to put this machine in the loft and never connect to it as a
desktop machine. How can I get the default interface to be comet when I
reboot?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry Mike, I have no idea where I got the name Thomas from :)

If you attempt to save changes to a network with a name starting with
'Auto' the changes will not be saved. This should be in the
documentation, if not then you have a valid documentation bug. For
Network Manager, this is not a bug but rather it is intentional. To
save your changes, you will need to give the connection a name that does
not begin with Auto. Home, Ethernet, Main Connection are all
valid names that can have changes saved. You will still see 'Auto eth0'
in Network Manager, that won't go away, but you can choose to connect to
 the other one instead.

Please try to set a static IP address again, but this time before saving
change the name of the network, and let us know if that works.

 Thanks in advance!

 Thomas,

When you were attempting to set a static IP address, were you editing
the connection named Auto eth0, or any other name starting with
 Auto?
