I notice in the posting of ullix said on 2007-03-18 that he gets sound with
the audio device "HDA Generic" given in /proc/asound/oss/sndstat.
I am in exactly the same situation. I have Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty amd64 installed
on a AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ and have no sound. My setup
is
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
99>cat /proc/asound/oss/sndstat
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.14rc1 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux quantonakessa 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Wed May 23 00:30:47 UTC
2007 x86_64
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation

Card config:
HDA VIA VT82xx at 0xfbffc000 irq 17

Audio devices:
0: ALC861VD Analog (DUPLEX)

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Timers:
31: system timer

Mixers:
0: Realtek ALC660-VD
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
However, if I boot up with Ubuntu Ultimate I get sound. Now I find
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
100>cat $HOME/buf/ultimate/proc/asound/oss/sndstat
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.12rc1 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux ubuntu 2.6.17-10-generic #2 SMP Fri Oct 13 18:45:35 UTC 2006 i686
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation

Card config:
HDA VIA VT82xx at 0xfbffc000 irq 98

Audio devices:
0: HDA Generic (DUPLEX)

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Timers:
31: system timer

Mixers:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note that the audio device is not the same. How can I change from ALC861VD
Analog to HDA Generic ?
