Mehul Ved,
Thanks for the valuable guidance. Now I can change any sessions of Kubuntu
and Ubuntu. Thus avoiding installing Kubuntu separately in addition to
Ubuntu.

 sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
 OR
 sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

Similarly for any other flavour of ubuntu.

Ramnarayan,

Excellent idea to have KDE and Gnome installed as separate desktop
interfaces (as opposed to ubuntu / kubuntu dual boot) - in other words, *Ubuntu
OS* should have *option at the time of login - as Gnome or KDE desktop
interface.*

 Hi Folks,

 Thanks for all the responses,

have been a gnome user for quite a while but am impressed by both the
quality and responsiveness of apps under KDE hence the query, will give kde
a try and hope to have KDE and Gnome installed as separate desktop
interfaces (as opposed to ubuntu / kubuntu dual boot).

Tried installling many KD apps and it began messing up my clean Gnome
hence the need for separation. And once the apps are installed i guess it
should be both easy to switch interfaces through re-login and use specific
 tools through the CLI.

Right-click on the GNOME Desktop gives me Create Document option, but

Yep, thats what i noticed was different about KDE the right click options
/ dialogue (to clarify) gives options to open specific files (like wincedows
but a good thing to have). Wonder why gnom does not have it though.

 thanks

actually when Ubuntu started off they wanted people to have a simpler time
and hence the one interface option only.

most other distro's do give the option of both interfaces and thats a good
thing (i think)

I don't really understand the use of having 2 desktops when all KDE apps work
on Gnome and Gnome apps work on KDE

Moreover, All Debian apps can be installed on RHEL and vice versa, after
manually extracting and a few other tweaks. What's the use of making so many
distinctions? Why can't there be just 1 linux?

Nope, all KDE apps don't work well in GNOME or vice versa. There are
hell lot of bugs regarding crashing of KDE apps when using in GNOME.

Linux is always one, but DE and WMs are many. This is because we
(FOSSians) believe that options are a form of freedom. 99% of people
change their desktop background frequently. People do not like to stick
with the same thing, or at least like to have some visual improvements
and changes. All do not like the way GNOME works, all do not like the
way KDE works. Thus users are always given the choices and freedom to
use what they feel comfortable using. In the past one year, I had
shifted between GNOME and KDE as my primary desktop 4 times. I like a
few KDE apps which I use in GNOME and vice versa with the GNOME apps as
well. What makes me keep going is this freedom to make my choices
whenever I feel like. And there are nicer things in the Desktop world
other than KDE, GNOME as well.

There is indeed a project which aims at integrating or at least making
the hard work of different DEs into one. Check
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/ to know more.

I have 2 questions...

1. Can I easily switch between Gnome and KDE desktops after installing this?

2. Is there anything special that i can only get in KDE and not in Gnome or
vice versa?

Re: [ubuntu-in] Are there Kubuntu users on this list as well ??

2008-03-04 Thread Arpan Patelia
Hi All,
This is Arpan and I am using Kubuntu for 8 months now, currently Kubuntu
7.10 KDE 4.0.1 desktop installed. I also have Ubuntu 7.10 installed on
another drive. I always keep my system dual booting :-)

Talking about right clicks, you get options of creating text file, HTML file
and a new folder in file manager(Dolphin) as well as on desktop. However on
desktop you get extra options for creating shortcuts to a URL, device or an
application. I do have OpenOffice installed but it does not help in getting
any extra options for creating documents or presentations.

1. Can I easily switch between Gnome and KDE desktops after installing
this?

Yes, it's easy to switch between Gnome and KDE, you need to select desktop
environment before logging in.

One more point you should remember while installing KDE over Gnome or vice
versa, that KDE and Gnome applications will clutter your application menu.
Their menu items will be intermingled which is not good from ease of use
POV.

2. Is there anything special that i can only get in KDE and not in Gnome or
vice versa?

This can be a subjective topic but I will put up my experience with each of
them.

- Gnome focuses on and provides simplicity for use but some times you may
want more control over your system. I find lack of good audio player in
Gnome, none of the player comes near to Amarok of KDE. Sometimes I really
miss few right-click and select task kind of things missing in KDE compared
to Gnome. Compiz integration is great with Gnome for the people who like eye
candy. I love Ubuntu Human theme all around in Gnome.
- KDE is an awesome environment with some really rocking apps. The trio that
I find unbeaten is Amarok audio player, KTorrent(best torrent app providing
all sort of functionalities and details) and K3B(CD burning, If you like(d)
Nero on windows then you should like this one better). Akregator feed reader
is also a good app and I find Kopete(chat) better than pidgin(old name
gaim). Addition of D3lphin/Dolphin is a great move and it works great as a
file manager. KDE basically provides you finer control over your system i.e.
easy configuration tools and apps with lot of features.

 Yes, I'm a Kubuntu user. :) (Kubuntu 6.06.2 LTS)
Add one more over here, though I am running Hardy Alpha KDE4 in VM ;)

I have been using KDE in Ubuntu installation for more than an year.
Though there were some app related issues when I cross used, it was a
smooth sail. Still I use a lot of KDE apps in GNOME, things work fine.
