This has been discussed endlessly in this list and at many places on internet.

It all depends on how you setup your connection and your modem/router.
1. You can put your router in bridge mode and then configure the
connection client on your machine. This seems to be default because
the technician installing the connection does not know any other way.
Ideally the connection configured this way should just show as DSL
connection in NM. If it doesn't then some problem with NM or
configuration.
2. You can put the router in routed mode, configure connection on the
device and simply put your machine in DHCP mode (roaming mode in case
of NM). This is ideal setup in most of the situations and specifically
when you have more than one machines. This works perfectly with NM.

Take your pick.

Inline posting would be helpful

First this is a password based connection ?? needs a user name and
password and Auto eth0 does not do it so it *has* to be setup with the
ADSL option. Yes this normally works but so far it has not and after
a recent update network manager seems to even buggier the only thing
is that it makes sure that Mobile broadband devices work well.

So don't want to mess with WICD unless i know these also work there.

I have had no problem connecting to BSNL broadband using a fresh install
of Ubuntu 9.10 (standard 32 bit edition, downloaded from torrent,
installed on an old Compaq NC6000 laptop). The router is a Huawei ZXC
531B. I have connected to both open as well as WEP encrypted connections.

So perhaps you are having problems with the Siemens router.

I have also recreated the Auto eth0 connections and have not had any
problem with it.

Sorry I have not been of much help.

Its not a bug. Network manager doesnt support pppoe. This has been a major
feature request since a long time but no one has bothered to do it. pon and
poff are the only way you have. And to my knowledge, even WICD cant act as a
pppoe dialer.

[ubuntu-in] BSNL Broadband does not work through Network Manager Applet in Ubuntu 9.10

2009-12-05 Thread Ramnarayan.K
Hi

Am setting up a fresh installation of Ubuntu 9.10 (Ultimate) .
Everything has gone well. The only issue is the BSNL Broadband

It is an ADSL connection and does not connect through the Network
Manager Applet.

I had to use use pppoeconf to set it up. Even on my laptop its the same problem

The modem is a Siemens C2110. And the connection is via ethernet. The
auto eth0 starts up and connects to the modem but it only allows
access to the device and no further.

Any idea what the problem could be.

Some time back on a similar network problem Shakthi Kannan posted a
network-debub script file
http://shakthimaan.com/downloads/glv/scripts/network-debug.sh

which i am using to attach the details below:

Would appreciate knowing whats wrong and how to rectify this.
