from here i got the default username and password as
admin and password

but i continue to get the error message:

A username and password are being requested by http://192.168.1.1. The
site says: "level 15 access"

so what next ??
can't find a manual either , and don't want to use the reset button
otherwise the settings done by BSNL will go zilch

thanks

Agreed i think this is the problem but cannot figure out what

The wifi router itself does not have an option to pick up a DHCP ip
from the BSNL modem - so i ahve to set it by hand
this time i set it at 192.168.1.1 (but this would conflict with the
BSNL modem which is also 192.168.1.1)

The LAN is set at DHCP but starting from 192.168.1.200 (for five
addresses default is 50)

Any idea what the default login is for the BSNL modem -its a UTstarcom
Eth+USB+ADSL2+router

i cannot seem to access this router though am sure the login was admin
and pwd was admin - so not sure whats happening now

So basically, your issue is not wifi but basic internet connectivity through
your router.
You need to concentrate on that problem first.
What are your LAN/DHCP settings ?

If your client does not support WPA2 security mode, it will not be able to
see APs with WPA2 security mode.
It's that simple :-)

Nope cannot connect to the net via ethernet cable (through the wifi router)

I can ping the wifi router but not the BSNL modem

Yes will try this two

so how does one figure which clients have which kind of encryption protocol

Are you saying i should set up my router to get its ip from the BSNL
Modem (instead of setting it at 10.10.10.1)

Will try that and get back - however i cannot find a place where the
wifi router settings is set to get ip address from modem.

will turn on mac filter once the wifi gets going and i can collect the
mac address from the devices connecting - instead of doing it
manually.

thanks will try and let you know results

You can isolate the problem step-by-step.
First see if you are able to connect through a Wired connection using a
regular Ethernet cable.
If that works, try connecting wirelessly WITHOUT any security. See if you
can ping your router atleast.
It's after this that you should try the security modes.
And my advice would be to go for a WPA-PSK with TKIP encryption, since most
clients support this mode.
WPA2 and/or AES might not be supported by all Clients.

Here is a simple setup of mine which I have currently with Airtel. I
used to have a PPPoE on router when I had BSNL and the modem was broken
that I couldn't configure it.
I prefer the modem to be configured to connect by itself.

[Internet] --> [Modem] (Configured with IP 192.168.1.0 and runs DHCP
starting from 192.168.1.1-10)-> [Linksys WRT54G] (gets IP from
modem, runs DHCP from 192.168.0.100-110 and has internal IP 192.168.0.0)
> ethernet and wireless

I have turned on encryption for the wireless as well as the MAC filter.
I haven't fiddled around with any other configuration on the router.

[ubuntu-in] Connecting a Wifi router to a BSNL Broadband modem through Ubuntu

2009-02-07 Thread ramnaraya...@gmail.com
Hi

Have been trying to connect a Linksys wrt54gl wifi router to a BSNL
Broadband modem.

Everything seems to be setup but i cannot seem to connect through the
wifi setup

The following
SETUP:
Internet used PPoE mode
Username and Password as per what us being used
Used both the Keep Alive and Connect on Demand mode to keep the
connection (none of them worked)
In Router Name - gave it a name

Network Setup : WiFi Router IP gave it as 10.10.10.1

The LAN network output from the wifi is DHCP starting from 10.10.10.200
with DHCP only for 5 users, and DHCP is enabled

**
WIRELESS Setup
SSID - gave one of my own
Wifi Network Mode - mixed (i.e - both b and g )
Channels - first left it at the default 11, when that did not work used
6 - that too did not work

SSID Broadcast - Enabled

Wireless Security - enabled WEP2 - personal which runs the TKIP+AES
algorithim.
Mac filter - disabled

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS - default
APPLICATION AND GAMING- default

ADMINISTRATION:
Management: router password enabled
Web Access: HTTP - enabled
Remote Management - Enabled (since it was not working, i enabled this so
that i could figure out what was not working - will disable it later
when it begins working )
UPnp - Enabled

ADMINISTRATION
Log - enabled
Diagnostics - Nothing required to be done
Factory Default - no change required
Firmware Upgrade - Not Yet as soon as i get my hands on the latest /
bestest opensource firmware
Configuration Management - backed up the Current settings

STATUS
There is a Connect Disconnect Option so after connecting the broadband
router via an ethernet cable i used the connect option -

**
all these settings did not work
i could not ping the broadband router ip - 192.168.1.1

Under Firefox - i reset use of proxy from Use System proxy (default) to
No proxy
That too does not work

***
So now am not sure what i cannot connect to the internet either through
the wifi of through the ethernet (LAN) ports available on the device.
The internet connection works (as this mail evidences)

What could be wrong.

Am wondering if my Ubuntu's firewall would be preventing access to the
net -??

Would appreciate help and advise

Thanks
ram
