I would request you to join the mailing list as the communication will
be a lot easier. We would like to know a few things from you,

[1] When is this Fest happening?
[2] Are you having only a stall or is there any FOSS or GNU/Linux
related talks happening?
[3] Is your stall only catering to Ubuntu or going to sell other
distributions also?
[4] Are you going to *sell* CD/DVD? If so, can we know what will be the
cost of a CD and DVD?
[5] How many CD/DVD do you thing you would ideally be able to give?
[6] Are the students or participants of the fest already have a clue
about Ubuntu or at least Linux?

Am not suggesting to order through shipit, especially through special
request for the following reasons,

[1] Shipit takes time (4 to 6 weeks), especially if it is in large
number. It might not be able to land up in time and hence go waste in
large numbers.
[2] Shipit of large number of CDs will end up you in paying Customs to
the extent of 1000 INR or more. Unless you are prepared to personally
face this cost, do not order one.
[3] For the point [6] mentioned above, I never suggest just giving free
CDs to people hoping that they will go home and try it out. On your side
you will feel that people are so interested in taking CDs that they will
go home, try and install them. But this doesn't happen at all. People
always never want to miss something given free, even if it may of no use
to them.
[4] From the above point, if you decide to sell the CDs so as to make
people feel that it it is of some value and to prevent freebie hunters
from looting all your CDs, sorry you can't do it with CDs ordered
through Shipit. I have talked about "selling CDs got through Shipit" and
the reply was "You should never get money for the CDs got through shipit".

So, what's the solution? Download the latest CD and DVD. Prior to the
event, burn some CDs and DVDs and give them for a nominal cost
(something like cost of media or cost of media + 10 Rs). This will make
sure you get back the cost of media you are spending from your pocket,
as well as make sure only people who are really interested to try
GNU/Linux to buy them. Am sure 20Rs is not a big cost considering they
spend more for buying a pirated movie CD which ends up not working at all.

Please feel free to poke us back in the mailing list for anything
related to your stall.

[ubuntu-in] Hi Everyone

2007-11-07 Thread Ritesh Sinha
Hi guys,

I've just joined this list and I would like to find out more about
what goes on here. What do we usually discuss? Are there any specific
rules that I need to stick to, apart from the Ubuntu CoC?

This is wicked cool.

Regards,

Ritesh

Sorry I've no idea there is a troubleshooting usenet forum that I

[ubuntu-in] hi false positive spam rate for ubuntu india list

2007-05-29 Thread Tom M
I was just glancing through my spam folder for gmail, and out of 700
messages, marked as spam, I had about 10 false positives for mails
sent to Ubuntu India mailing list, and 1 false positive that had been
sent to a blender related list, all other mails were legitimate spam.

Thus others using gmail might want to check their spam box and see if
they are experience similar false positive rates. If so, we need to
report this to google.

Hi,
I am really sorry, I didnt arrive there. But On Monday I tried to call
you, and got unreachable. Due to power cuts, my email to you about not
waiting for me, could not reach, as I don;t have UPS. I thought it was
delivered, which now I realised that default evolution time is 10 mins
to synchonize. I am really sorry friend. Anyway, one CD wasted, sorry
for that. I did upgrade to Feisty from Edgy, downloading and mounting
alternate CD iso.

What more I can say, my little stupid mistake. Anyway, my exams starting

[ubuntu-in] Hi just want you to know this stupid yaari trick.

2007-04-22 Thread Ravi S. Kumar
Hi Ubuntu-india,
You know one thing.. I was exploring Yaari.com, and was thinking how can
this service be so popular instead there is better Orkut. So in the way
exploring more, I came witht the truth. They are faking much identity to
show a hugh crowd, mostly girls and then luring guys and others to join,
and make the community big. Huh,
So how it is? Search in your regions, it will show a large list of
people there, but finding their profile, you will come with that the
profile is not well informative, and the date of profile creation and
last editing is same today for most of members. Also, they use same
photo for many members. What the heck, dont know why they doing so. It
wont make the community real without real people. Maybe, they want to
earn some thru advertisements. Also, please dont access your Y! and
Google address book from Yaari, that will add those contacts for
immediate invitation email, adn so called spams.

But there is one thing. Once registred, you can send SMS to any friends
in India, and it works better.

You can use any laptop with ubuntu, make sure it has more than 256 MB
RAM... now, since you dont have to pay for software, so you can invest
as much on hardware... buy laptop with more ram and good Graphics..
thats all... But please dont buy Acer (personal experience, its battery
life is so short, you will realise it in just 2 months)..

Dell and Lenevo is good.

If you are getting an error related to "wodim", do the following and
try again. Search the Ubuntu Forum for wodim related issues.

"sudo chown +s /usr/bin/wodim"

[ubuntu-in] Hi, need sort of help

2007-04-20 Thread Ravi Kumar

Hello Friends,
I am happy that Feisty is out. I downloaded the ISO, but here is the bad
news. My CDWriter completely not writing anything... there is some hardware
issue with it, but it reads the CDs. Is COmbo drive, only reads CD, no DVDs.
LOL
so i am now waiting for shipit to send me CDs, long time to wait. But here
is what you can help me.

If anyone is from Delhi, and has downloaded Feisty, please let me know. You
can burn me a CD, and I will collect it.
So, anyone from Delhi. Please Reply.

Thanks in Advance.

That'd be great. Why don't you take a look at gnusim8085, which is being
maintained by Aanjhan & Onkar? I am sure they would love to have
contributors.

Both are valuable. Generally computer science theory and algorithms
will be of value to get from a university. Also of value are things
like the many math courses you take.

Certainly ;) Personally I've a great love for the beauty and elegance
of python.

Also a bit about myself - I'm from the United States, I'd initially
signed up a couple of weeks back to invite you all to translation day
for Blender (blender.org) that i'd organized. Due to things getting a
little hectic I didn't get as many announcements out as I'd planned.
So for now I'm just hanging out here :).

Nice to meet you all,

Tom M.

by yourself. This is something to keep in mind, for all students. All
the best.
