2008-10-09 Thread Dharan P Deepak -
hi all,

don't go for a compaq or hp laptop (a friend of mine lost 3 kg wait after he
took a compaq)... I'm certain that you'll regret if you do...

I prefer dell vostro n series cos they don't come with any operating system
pre installed (you don't need to pay for windows [:)] ) and they are good in
quality and performance (true value for money) . lenovo, toshiba are good if
you are not interested in dell machines..

Hi Raseel,
No, there aren't any technical reasons. The basic reasons are :-

a. I do seriously think that they (AMD) should be given a fighting chance.
b. I haven't had any experience with an AMD chip machine.
c. I don't think (although may be proven wrong later) an Intel+ATi combo

An interesting blog post which caught my time sometime back.

I personally have a AMD Desktop machine and things are working flawlessly on
it.
My main reason for going for it (at the time I bought it) was that , in
those days (I think before 2004), AMD was seriosuly giving Intel a run for
their money.
AMD had come up with the 64-bit processors that were faster than the Intel
processors of the same processor speeds.

However, with Intel's Core achitecture, the tables have turned and AMD has
been on the down-side ever since.
I have never heard that the AMD Opetron dual core processors being better
than any of the corresponding Intel Core 2 Duo, etc.

Also, my personal experience says that the AMD processor heats up more than
the Intel (this was true for Desktops at least).
You might want to check this up, since this can be a major factor for
laptops.

Finally, I agree with the your last point. But that maybe because I am a
Nvidia fan. I think currently, Intel - Nvidia is the best option.

Thanks,
Raseel

 the modem.

I was not clear first time. When I said 'you will regret later' I was
referring to hardware issues.
In last 2.5 years my dad owned a laptop ...
1. The LCD monitor developed a green vertical line on left side.
2. I had to get the keyboard replaced.
3. Battery time has gone down to 1.5 hours.
4. USB ports intermittently die. For some reason this also affects bluetooth.

It is possible that the model my dad have (NX6120) is of poor quality
and not all the laptops from the series are bad.

a. ATi released some of the specs of their in public domain last year so

The great Bhavani :) wants to know my reason for choosing AMD.

Well its pretty simple, Intel is by far the monopoly, so AMD should have a
fighting chance, otherwise there would be a day when the chip prices go up.

   Anybody using a ThinkPad??
It would be great if someone on the list has used both IBM ThinkPad as
well as Lenovo ThinkPad, so that there can be a comparison

I have a lenovo thinkpad t60 - works mostly out of the box - everything -
   right from ubuntu 7.04 / 7.10 atleast -

modems don't work (being the notorious win modems ) my graphics card ati x
1300 has given some trouble and sometimes some graphics programmes don't
appear clearly or crash the system (google earth)

   Battery life decent,

Build - am not sure a compaq pentium i had earlier was solid but am having
trouble with my keys touch pad and keyboard (infact am taking it tomorrow
 to
   the lenovo guys)

but overall am very happy - i think given the conditions i use it in it has
lasted better than some laptops may have

Re: [ubuntu-in] Looking for a laptop

2008-10-06 Thread Priyadarsan Roy

By the way, don't even buy HP Compaq series laptops. You will regret later.

I have an HP Comapq nx7010. Its like more than 4 yrs old now and have been
using Ubuntu on it since 4.04 Everything works out of the box other than
the modem.
