Are you sure that you're not behind any kind of proxy that prohibits
what you can access and what you can't? A browser accessing websites
doesn't mean that you can do other kind of things in the same network.
Can you open the url in your sources.list file in a browser?

Since apt can download via http, why would this be an issue?

Getting there is only half as far as getting there and back.

What kind of network? Dial-up? This seems weird. Can
you ping any of the sites in.archive.ubuntu.com,
us.archive.ubuntu.com, ftp.heanet.ie? Try again a couple
of times immediately after a failure. Some ISPs have
terrible name servers that might take some time to
resolve.

Please provide me a solution and if possible please mail me latest
 sources.list file.

Am doing that off-list.

Gora

P.S. Please trim excess material from a post that you
are replying to, and put your replies inline.

Actually when I test, it is very much responsive. But it is known to be
failing now and then in my own experience.

Try changing in.archive.ubuntu.com to us.archive.ubuntu.com and do
an apt-get update. Infact, does apt-get update show you a similar error?

Is your network working? Can you resolve, and access other
sites?

It is also possible that the site in.archive.ubuntu.com is
down.

 May be problem with /etc/apt/sources.lst
[...]

I always use ftp.heanet.ie, which has proved to be very
reliable, and fast, over several years. If interested,
please mail me off-list, and I will send you a copy of
my sources.list.

Regards,
Gora
