Yes, Ram is right. I suggested otherwise in a thread because I wanted that

system with my external hard disk almost thrice a day sometimes.

/home is good.

I would say +1 :)

and am quite happy that you are able to connect to the net via Ubuntu.
Now you can enjoy real freedom.

regarding having to reformat

my suggestion to all Linux newcomers make sure you partition your hard
disk to have a separate /home - this will mean you never have to worry
about your data being lost in a reinstall or new install

My typical partition scheme looks like this

/dev/sda1: ="IBM_PRELOAD" TYPE="ntfs" 15 GB
/dev/sda2: = SHARED "ntfs" 20 GB
/dev/sda4: = ext4 Boot 100 MB
/dev/sda6: LABEL=Swap" 4 GB
/dev/sda7: = ext4 /(or root) 15 GB
/dev/sda8 = ext 4 /home - 100 GB

As you can see the last partition is /home where i keep my data i have
never had to reinstall / reformat this partition and the only time i
had to do so was when shifting from ext3 to ext 4 for which i backed
my home up in an external drive (normal procedure to be followed for
safe data keeping) and then changed to ext4 and voila back to normal.

however what i think may be happening is that you dns is not auto resolving

then we could try changing the dns
once you are connected with the internet

then do this
Open /etc/resolv.conf file:
-$ sudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf

replace the dns numbers there , with this

Hi All,

A suggestion, slightly OT. We have mails coming often, which ask
about configuring the latest USB modem, from foo company. How about
keeping a wiki page on the ubuntu-in wiki and redirecting users? Will
reduce clutter in the mailing list. Only specific issues can be
addressed in the list then. I can help with KPPP configurations
(screenshots, text etc). If there's someone who can help with the
GnomePPP part, I'll go ahead and make the wiki page.

Hope this helps.

what you need is wvdial and the entire set with that, unfortunately
this is not packaged by default and there is a list of 4 packages that
you need

Please look at this help page

pasted in entirety below
http://acomelectronics.com/GeorgeVita/restore_wvdial.html
How I restored the missing wvdial (Ubuntu 9.04)

(please read http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1138101)

This note refers to Ubuntu 9.04 running on a PC that has no access to
the internet via LAN or WiFi and the modem we have is not recognized
by the system (like many 3G CDMA or HSPA modems).
So this is a strange and difficult case!

At first I downloaded the following packages (from a pc connected to
the internet, any O.S.):

1. http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/i386/libxplc0.3.13/download
2. http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/i386/libwvstreams4.4-base/download
3. http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/i386/libwvstreams4.4-extras/download
4. http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/i386/libuniconf4.4/download
5. http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/wvdial/download

Note that above are all for an i386 pc.

I copied all to a USB memory stick, and then paste them to the ubuntu
9.04 running pc into /var/cache/apt/archives/ directory using sudo
nautilus from terminal. Then I installed all packages by double
clicking each icon (of .deb package) in above order (1,2,3,4 and
finally 5). I ignored all informative messages. Finally I had to run
wvdialconf, edit the /etc/wvdial.conf file and be connected with sudo
wvdial.

You can get my wvdial_904_i386 zip file (size=1.04 MBytes) containing all above.
Into .zip file there is a .txt with checksums. Please CHECK all files
and do it at your own risk.

Note: All above worked with an Asus EeePC 1000H running Ubuntu 9.04
Netbook Remix live version booting from an SD card (all on the fly!)
2nd test with installation to Hard Disk worked also.

---> UPDATE: above packages are from ubuntu.com <---

***
what you can do is once they are downloaded - copy them to a directory
(temp or foo or whatever) navigate there in terminal and run this
command

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

this takes care of any sequencing issues.

Install Gnome-PPP while connected to the 'net.

sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp

Then run:

sudo gnome-ppp

Click Setup

Detect the modem. (Did it work)

Close that Window.

Enter your username and password - it's either 'internet' without the
quotes for both or your 10 digit number.

The number is #777

Click connect!
