Let us know what kind of video files you are trying to play (wmv, mpeg, mp4, etc.) and which video player are you using to play them. Also, I am sure you must have posted this question on Mint forums too ( http://forums.linuxmint.com). I think most of the media file format needed codecs are available in ubuntu repository. while playing any video file in some of the media player only sound is played and the video and and when i play the file in media player such as vlc it automatically gets shutdown. Can you share more information like what is the file extension (like .avi .rmvb etc) and on which player did u play. One thing i notice is rmvb format video is not supported in Movie player and vlc in ubuntu 8.10 and bases systems.
