We are not sure if the problem is faced here (related to DVD) is by everyone or just few users who have specific hardware. So we can't not say directly that package maintainer didn't test the package before upgrade. > > 3. Yes, hardware is constant on your machine. But it is variable between your machine and package maintainers machine. So even if it is broken for you, it may not be for him. > > 4. No. I am not trying to justify the regressions. I remember some bugs in launchpad where people were not able to boot their hardy installations when they were having some specific type of hard drives. The problem was that some old driver got disabled in favor of new driver and it was causing unbootable machines for a small percentage of users. So I believe that issues like this which are related to hardware are most of the times corner cases. And i specifically wanted to present objection to the sentence 'Ubuntu QA is culprit'. I hope I have properly explained what I wanted to say. Onkar -- Passion - Some people climb mountains - others write Free software. No it doesn't include so many people... there is a specific package maintainer who has responsibility for a package.. and at the very least should check if something basic like starting mailman or inserting an optical disc has the expected result. > 3. Murphy will ensure that regressions can and will continue to happen .. but they should not happen for such basic functionality. And there is no reason to justify such regressions. I would like 'Ubuntu QA' not being blamed for following reasons 1. Ubuntu QA is not a well defined team. It includes almost anyone who does packaging, bug reporting/triaging/fixing and anyone who uses/tests Ubuntu. So when you say 'Ubuntu QA', it sounds like everyone is to be blamed. 2. People do make mistakes, It happens in all distros. Of course if there is/are a single person or group of persons who keep making mistakes, being careless then a platform is available to raise voice against it. 3. More often than not the hardware problems that come in the form of regressions are side effects of supposedly harmless change or security/bug fix that someone did. 4. It is my firm belief that all of the core developers in Ubuntu who have power to crash your systems through the way of broken packages, take very much care not to let it happen. But it is many times not possible to test all the scenarios which might introduce regressions. I think it is in best interest of Ubuntu in particular, free software in general that when you encounter such problem you report a bug and provide as much information as possible.
