Everyone should also have ponies and world peace :-) Unfortunately that's not
how the real world works.

End of the day content is what matters and there's hardly anyone contributing
content. Even though wiki has the lowest entry barrier towards contributing
content.

Writing something new from scratch will also bring with it new
problems/bugs/exploits and more work for the system admins. And considering
everyone is doing it in their spare time. It is more efficient to re-use
something that's already proven and maintained.

They can do all that on the wiki right now, but various sections are still
un-updated and out of date.

Simple things like a list of laptops which run Ubuntu without any problem
haven't been updated in over 2 years. Anyone that has bought a laptop in the
past 2 years could have taken a minute to edit to edit the wiki and add
his/her laptop model to the list.

What makes you believe that people will *learn* how to contribute using a
totally new framework that'll be designed from scratch solely for use by
ubuntu-in ?

Those countries have had computing in their own language for decades. To the
point they don't need to know/use english at all. For better or worse as far as
computing goes India is an English speaking country. Have you seen any laptop
manufacturer offering a laptop with a Hindi/Tamil/Telugu/Bengali keyboard as
an option? Whereas every single laptop sold in those countries you mention
come with keyboards an Operating Systems in their own language.

That said there is absolutely nothing stopping anyone from starting a Section
on the wiki in their own language and contributing content or translating
existing content. And yet there is a dearth of content.

Yeah there are thousands of people using Ubuntu. But for most of them it's
just a tool to get their work done. So many people ask for help here and get
their problems resolved. But after that they just go away.

If they could take a few minuutes and summarise their problem/solution on the
wiki and post a link back to the list. It'll give new/non-members easy access
to a solution and allow list members to point to the wiki when the same
question is asked again.

How many times have you seen that happening?

> How many people here thinks the same? Please reply, support my view.

Of course, everyone here wants an elegant website full of quality content in
multiple languages. But that won't come because of a new software framework
or CMS. People need to move up from being mere consumers. And that is not
something you can solve using technology.

I respect your ideas. But to tell you truly, India is so diverse that you
end up with at least 15 languages on the website which is quite a
challenging task. But most of us understand English. So the main site should
be in english where the LoCo translation teams can localise it.

Wiki platform are nice, but only for wiki. Yes, we can create anything from
it, but again it needs some hacks, added effort and getting off the straight
road. So, I would not choose a Wiki platform for a full-fledged site with a
part as wiki. But again I would say (as I earlier stated), this should not
be a good time to decide over the platform. We should plan something before
start digging in.

Ubuntu-In should not be just a wiki. It should be a Custom site, a forum, a
wiki, a CMS and more.

What I think about Ubuntu-India, not a site about Ubuntu, but a site more
geared towards the Ubuntu and its
usage/development/helps/articles/presentations/news around users in India.
You can also put it in some professional attire, so that people/businesses
in India can take Ubuntu seriously.

Why we should go for professional look and content:
Lets realise it. Everyone moved from simple to little more professional, and
usable, more informative and content rich. Like Fedora, SuSE, Ubuntu
official etc.

So, I will suggest a base framework, with some initial features/apps
developed on it. Then, gradually we can add more and more apps to it.
Later, it will grow with apps, contents and media. We can all put our
effort, don't we? Everyone can contribute, no matter how and what they
contribute. We can have multi languages for tutorials and articles.

Hmm. We already have the mediawiki system running fine, wouldn't do us

Re: [ubuntu-in] Redesign the Ubuntu India website

2010-09-04 Thread Ravi Kumar
The Redesign of Ubuntu-In is a Great idea..

First let me introduce myself. I am Ravi, Software Engineer and Architect in
a firm where OpenSoure == null-or-None. I never contributed much here. Never
interacted much with great people here. But I read most of the posts. This
Redesign project seems very interesting and I would like to contribute to
it, wherever and whatever be possible to me.

Before starting, why not we should gather some requirements and innovative
idea, and then plan the work, rather than just jumping in and start-coding.
It would be great to start by listing the basic requirements of site. Since
its a local community, we should focus primarily on information and
requirements around the users and contributors in India. Once its achieved,
then we should go for the solution.
After we have a direction to go happily, we can start working on the Designs
and Themes. And this will be one gradual effort to build something good.

So in nutshell, this would be:

   1. Brainstorming Sessions on what we should have, Requirement Gathering
   2. Cleaning and Categorising the things, and tagging it with priorities
   3. Work on basic Wireframe and Design Idea
   4. Development and Designing
   1. Mockups And Designs preparation
  2. Coding
   5. Draft Release (before we get live)
   6. And, Whoa.. Its Live now.
   7. Again run on #1 for gradual feature addon.

With a plan, we can build something good.

And yes, thats just my idea and you are free to throw it on my face. :)

Apart from these, why not we should get it on Django. There are many cool
developers here, who would love to devote their skills for a nobel cause.

Ravi Kumar

I'm not sure we should split out the discussions to a separate list.
Lets keep all activity to one list (this one), makes it easier for
everyone to contribute.

The code however, should be fine in launchpad or elsewhere. Personally,
I prefer git, but that's just me :P

Following the discussion on the redesign and development of our LoCo
website, I have setup a project [0] and team [1] on launchpad for its
hosting needs. It also has a mailing list [2] to continue this

Suggestions are welcome.

Sorry I'm contributing a little late here, but I'm with a GPRS
connection right now, so replies will be slow.

It's great to see a redesign initiative in accordance with the new color
scheme and UI of Ubuntu. I had led the forum redesign the last time, the
awesome theme you see on forum.ubuntu-in.info right now was done by
Narinder. (Are you still on list, Narinder?)

I have a couple of thoughts about this initiative. Essentially, we need
2 things: a theme for the Mediawiki installation and a theme for the
bbpress forum installation.
- Since our bbpress custom theme, I've had requests from other Ubuntu
communities asking for our forum theme. I realize it would have been
much easier for them, if the theme was in a git/hg/bzr repository somewhere.
- The Mediawiki theme will need to be tested really well, because the
wiki is our main LoCo "face". This new theme should also be in an open
source repo somewhere.

Unfortunately, I can't help with the redesign *itself* this time, but if
there is any related thing I can assist with, I'll be sure to chip in.
Of course, I'll keep an eye on all the redesign threads.

We can work on your ideas. But let's start with something simple like a
wiki. That's why we discuss everything on ubuntu-in.wikia.com Post your
logos there. The final design can then be done via launchpad.

This way we can give write access to a couple of guys to have control
over what is committed. We can also enable a mailing list on the project
to discuss issues specific to this project.

I can dedicate sometime (an hour or two daily) in helping administer the
project and write a bit of html/css stuff. Though I am an amateur, I am
