My own list, for the UK and not Ubuntu specific:
http://technolalia.org/resources/uklinuxhardware.html
LXer list (covers much of the world, and specifies distro):
http://lxer.com/module/forums/t/23168/

I feel that the large job is not listing or tabulating the data, but
simply getting Ubuntu pre-installed by vendors. In the meantime, the
Ubuntu website should have a list of hardware vendors, just as it does
with service partners.

The laptop testing team is (kind of) doing this for laptops:

System 76 sells them preconfigured with Ubuntu as well. http://
system76.com/

I almost purchased one from them but I want something smaller than 14
inches; i.e. ultra light, under 4 lbs, 12" max but 10" would be even
better for travel. (and unfortunately I need a windows path for work
so I'm still looking for a machine I can dual boot rather than just
Ubuntu.)

I was just thinking about this type of "bug" this morning.
UbuntuDemon and others on the forums were all searching for laptop
recommendations. It would be nice to have a section called, "The
Community Recommends. . . " with a list of a few desktop and laptop
configurations that have been proven stable. Everything seems to be
reversed at the moment; i.e. there's a list of bugs with certain
setups but not "here's what's known to work." I found this page to
have some good notebook info as well:

[ubuntu-marketing] [Bug 63192] Re: Ubuntu web site does not say where I can buy a laptop with Ubuntu

2006-10-01 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
'Large jobs' are exactly what effective team collaboration (given
appropriate tools, like a wiki) is able to accomplish :)

This doesn't have to be achieved on a world scale. In fact, I think the
best approach is at the LoCo level, just as the Australian team (of
which I am a member) has done. When you buy a computer, what matters
most is how it is sold where you live. What Dell does in the UK has
little bearing on how they do business in Australia, for example.

It's very difficult to fix this bug, because such a list would have to
be maintained for the whole world. Some local community teams have made
some efforts towards gathering such information (see for example the
Australian team [1]), but I have the feeling that collating such
information on a worldwide basis for the Ubuntu website would be a large
job. It may be that the marketing team would be interested in trying to
fix this bug, so I'll subscribe them to the bug report.

No objections here.
You might want to make it '/MarketingTeam/MediaRelations' instead.

Towards a real and ongoing option:

Is it possible for a number of businesses and also LUGs in UK to
commit to supply of install or supply of PCs , laptops, with Ubuntu?

The terms of service would obviously be different for LUGs, and this
might be attractive to the more ambitious beginners to linux, while
the businesses (small or large) might be able to offer
1) a pre-installed ubuntu on a no-os laptop or desktop machine
2) a pre-install ubuntu on a dual boot machine, new or customer's
current machine
3) positive comments towards a local LUG installer champions knowing
that once the install is completed, the client might often return for
regular hands on detail paid support, if the general LUG contact was a
bit inconvenient (for non tech users)

Something like this approach would begin to make ubuntu a real and
ongoing option to the mass of PC users who would never dream of
installing an OS by themselves, and would feel very out of depth with
the usual LUG contact. There is a chicken and egg situation here.

As the leading (distrowatch) user friendly linux OS ubuntu would help
to narrow the focus for a newcomer with ambition to loose windows, but
no more technical desire or ability than they used when purchasing
windows originally.

I believe that a few people, such as myself, would be very happy to
act as a volunteer resource installer on a non professional basis,
when I am available. When I am not, others may be also available.
