+1

In fact when making the target to be an average Windows user who is
just confident enough to install programs, I would seriously consider
not even mentioning 'GNU/Linux' at all!

Just say Ubuntu is a great system! And it does not get viruses. Great
support community forums! Thousands of apps! It is fantasy land come true.

In fact that might be a viral idea:

Make a humorous fantasy advert for a computer system, so good it
cannot be true.
(But in fact it is true it is Ubuntu!)

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] TV ad and hello

2010-02-03 Thread markusmu...@yahoo.co.uk

Hi,
Dropped into the IRC channel some weeks/months back and was pointed in this
direction to get more of an idea what you guys were all about and to introduce
myself, so here I am.  My name's Mark but friends call me Munch and I'm a keen
and enthusiastic Linux n00b, currently spending most of my PC time running
Ubuntu Ultimate Edition.
Active on the UE forums and actively trying to breathe some life into a
Facebook group for Ubuntu users in Birmingham.

The TV ad is a very exciting idea - there are already enough videos out there
to make a helluva good community compilation on almost zero budget...
Can offer audio-editing expertise and some examples of my previous work...
Apologies for the rambling nature of all this.
Bye for now!

Just throwing some stuff out there:

- "Does Ubuntu need a commercial?  Would the benefits outweigh the costs?
What would be the objective of a commercial?  Could the objective be met any
other way?"

If Ubuntu would find it valuable to have a commercial, wouldn't they have
developed one already?  Perhaps that's a question to ask Shuttleworth
himself.

In regards to cost, if  certainly there is a way to make a 20 second
commercial for cheap.

I'll agree it is ideal to have an experienced Producer, the right equipment
and fantastic filmography, but given movies like Paranormal Activity and
Blair Witch Project have been made for dirt cheap, I'm not convinced those
things are required for success.  A winning commercial may simply be one
with the right "vision", strategy, and killer script.

Also, the statistics for TV Ad campaign success is horrible.  That said,
seeing as how so many people don't know about Ubuntu, it may be the one
commercial that has more success than the average commercial.

Perhaps the first step is to prepare some sort of letter of intent that
could be mailed to as many bloggers, individuals, user groups and
organizations you can think of.  This letter would explain the idea and
request support, whether it be in skills, equipment, professional advice, or
even money.  With luck, the letter would make its way into the hands of the
"right people".

Such a letter is a sales pitch.  It's going to have to be perfect.

One last thing.  Search Google and see who else has the same desire of
making an Ubuntu commercial.  This thread from 2005 came up:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=41771

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Creating Viral Videos - Who's interested?

2010-02-03 Thread Mike Feravolo
Hello:

For those of you that are thinking about making a "Viral Video" for
Ubuntu should consider a few things:

1) Most Windows Users just it because it is already on the computer when
they buy it a some major retailer.

2) In order for a video to become viral and effective it has to be
"fun", and still deliver the message to the target audience.

3) If you target "Linux Users" you are wasting your time, because
everyone in the Linux community already knows about Ubuntu and they are
already Linux users.

4) Develop a solid marketing plan and state your objectives before you
start production, otherwise you aren't going to know how to measure your
success.

I wish you all luck an would like to see what comes out of your effort.
