I'd say that just posting all of what needs to be done, then assigning those that you know are covered works well. Then anything left people can see needs to be done and can take it if they want to.

How 2.0 was meant to be a wordplay cross of "How-to" and "Web 2.0".  Thethought behind the content was to demonstrate  interesting tidbits onemight find in a How-to but, where possible, showcasing booming announcer voice> the powerful features of the package managementsystems in Ubuntu Dapper toaccomplish your daily needs/practical needs in a simplified yet powerful
manner.   Focus, as with the magazine in general, is simple enough forthe new windows convert (or thinking of converting) as well as enoughmeet for existing Linux users.e.g.  How do I listen to itunes on Linux?   Old way:  you're hosed.  New
Way: Avahi with Rhythmbox, Banshee, or Amarok. How do I edit my genealogy? Old way:  download, tar -xzf, ./compile, etcetc.  New Way:  Gramps! How do I run Windows programs?  Old way: dual boot.   New way: wine,
cedega, vmplayer, parallels, Xen, etc. etc. (wow, this could be 12issues worth of stuff right there)The thought was to focus on a common task/desire and, at least for thenear term, show case apps as part of the solution.  This eventually
becomes harder after you've showcased apps so we could then transformmore into a real how-to column later on.  Perhaps like pc magazines ofyesteryear...we might even create a program to solve a problem then
showcase it.None of this is set into stone by the way.  Comments are welcome, especially on the wiki!Joey--ubuntu-marketing mailing list

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Switching from Windows

2006-07-11 Thread Eric Krichinsky
If the list is too redundant we can just provide a link to the other page. I was thinking more so of a summary of just some main programs. Testing of instructions is not a problem, if you want I can provide instructions, especially for the dual boot appendix. As for number 2 we do need to be careful not to offend in our wording here. I'd say there is a choice of listing the advantages open source has, or providing testimonials explaining why to switch.

Main Guide1. Introduction2. Reasons to switch3. Preparing to switch4. Installing Ubuntu5. Applications6. Importing data from WindowsAppendicesA. Windows networkingB. Dual-booting with Windows
It is intended that (1) or (2) will contain a section explaining theopen-source model. (3) will contain details on preparing data to betransferred from Windows onto an Ubuntu installation. (5) will contain a
list of equivalent applications and (4) will contain details onpartitioning and so on.We would especially like help in testing the instructions in chapters(3) and (6), when they have been written. We'd also like your thoughts
on the content of chapter (2), as this may be sensitive from a marketingperspective. We want to make sure we're putting the 'right' advantagesin! Thanks again,Phil--Phil Bull

[ubuntu-marketing] ideas

2006-07-03 Thread Eric Krichinsky
All of these ideas of have seen bouncing around sound like we are
atleast moving in the right direction.

*we need to know our target audience
*we need easily understandable material to use to advertise
*we need to have some form of heirarchy even with a backup this doesn't
have to be strict but having leaders helps keep us on the right path and
gives newcomers a sure place to get help and guidance

anything beyond all of this is what we will actually be doing, for now I
suggest we try to focus on these main points so that we can effectively
market Ubuntu. A logo couldn't hurt either.
