This is the reason that my mockups included a "home" button on the panel as well as an "apps" button. Re: Media, Chat, and UI Status
Bob, Sounds like you've got some good stuff on the way. I have a few questions, though. (1) The OpenedHand home page looks pretty interesting, but why are you sticking with the scrolling row? I see the little overview row on the bottom, but why not just have a full grid where all the icons are equally touchable? Seems like it takes a lot of taps to open an app with this UI. (2) Since the OpenedHand home page uses Clutter/OpenGL, will it work without HW-accelerated 3D? I know Poulsbo is going to have HW 3D, but will the OpenedHand home be useable before the 3D driver is available? (3) The marquee simplifications sound reasonable, but since you've got the scalpel in your hand, why not trim away a bit of the clock and the overall height and just make it a Mac OS X-style menu+status bar? In other words, why hide the menu bar and why make it vertical when you've now got the screen real estate to just make them horizontal like other OSes? (4) We've also got requests from one of our customers to make the whole marquee hidden and shown via a HW button press (like Palm OS). Given the 480-line displays some ODMs are planning to use, how about building in hiding and showing? If you really want to sex it up, take a look at the Sony PSP (or PS3), especially the Web browser. They hide and show the menu bar (and lower status line), and when they show them they make them translucent over the app, rather than resizing the app to show them. They also have some sweet animation when they hide and show. (5) Are the scrolling lists custom GTK widgets? Will they have iPhone- style kinetic scrolling? Will they be usable in a XUL app like Mobile Browser? Thanks. This requires additional functionality on the left side of the main splitter for each of Music, Photo, and Movie category. We are finishing up wireframes that show these. We will share the wireframes this next week and start working toward integrating these new features. UI - We received an initial drop of a clutter-based UI from OpenedHand. We intend to integrate this in as an option for the home screen this week. It is still rough, but has finger navigation and fun OpenGL magnification effects. (prototype pic attached -- real one looks very similar, I just don't have a screenshot on hand). We will make another anouncement when this is official. - We started on a DHTML alternative to both the OpenGL/OpenedHand UI and the Flash UI for systems that are limited. It will be runnable on any device as a fallback and also show how others can easily create HTML home pages of their own. All 3 of these will be available for others to build upon. (In the near future I also hope to have a gtk-based alternative). - We have not yet gone over all the issues related to application startup as assigned. Pepper has been good in proposing ideas, most of which we like and we just need to spend the time to flush out the problems. - Marquee: We are simplifying the marquee: No more top-left drop- down application menu. The "Home Button" will just jump you back to the home screen where all application startup will take place. The left/right arrows to navigate between application swill go away this week. They are confusing and don't work that well. We will make the controls on the marquee have better UI (different graphics for button pressed, for example). We will also add a down arrow to the drop-down menu (similar to N800 UI). - Application singleton: Applications should work as singletons now if they follow the 3-step process: correct .desktop file, service file, call osso_initialize() in their startup. - Scrolling lists: We have been working with some code from the Moko project that has finger scrollable lists. This will benefit all applications which have lists. Can you put together a consolidated table at the top of the wiki page which simply lists the app/apps chosen in each category. Something simple enough that a manager could understand. Thanks. UME games
Hi. As requested, I made a quick update on the applications page listing the games we picked. Any other suggestions, as aways, are welcome. A related note: I would like to remind you to not do any work on applications without check with me or Tollef first to avoid duplication. I also would like to suggest to those interested on the status of the applications to subscribe to the wiki page so you will be notified every time I change anything on it and I try to keep it as updated as possible. Moblin Applets Status Update
[General] Removed all conflicts between moblin-applets and any of the existing packages it draws code from: gnome-control-center, gnome-system-tools, and gnome-system-monitor. It can now be installed along side any of these packages. Also removed the gnome-settings-daemon build as this is not changed in moblin-applets and was conflicting with gnome-control-center install. Am in the process of completely removing any dependencies on gnome-settings-daemon within any of our applets. [New Applets] System Monitor applet: * Added in the code from gnome-system-monitor into moblin applets. * Made the necessary changes to hildonize the code and enable multiple dialog calls within a single process call. * Altered the dialog images to display the moblin logo instead of gnome. * Updated the debian package info with the gnome-system-monitor author, license, and copyright information. [Existing Applet Updates] Network Proxy: About Me: * bugs 151 and 152 verified, they have to do with the g_module_symbol call in libglade failing to see the "creation_function" symbol defined in about-me.glade. Background: * bug 159 filed, not yet verified Font * bug 155 verified, this has existed for a while and is caused by mismatched gconf keys between the font applet and the hildon environment. Screen Resolution: Sound Properties: * sound devices not yet detected, still root causing Keybindings: * bug 160 verified, this has to do with the gconf settings, still root causing. Keyboard Properties: * bug 157 filed, not yet verified. Menu & Toolbars: Network Admin: Date and Time: * fixed issues with crash, dialog can now be run multiple times without fail * fixed Mercator projection image in time zones * appears to function well now but needs QA verification. [Anticipated Applets] Volume Control status bar applet This code doesn't yet conform to the hildon status bar applet format, and so is not yet being displayed. Waiting for an update from Tariq. Midbrowser status
* Continued to work on hildonize the browser's Menu. We got to a point where the browser's menu will come up when you click on the "Home" button. However, the position of the menu is off a little and the theme doesn't match other hildonized app. I am in the process of simplifying the menu. Ran into a few problems and will work it out with Alexander Sac. * Got pretty good responses from browser Addons owners. Got some beta packages from and tested them and appeared to work fine. We have to add a page in Moblin to talk about these addons. * Mozplugger plugin is moving along ok, just have to figure it what the DBus interface to call to make it to execute our mobile-player for media contents. UME power-thermal-optimizations Status
Updated thermal extension patches are being reviewed within Intel with comments received that the code should be updated so that it can be used a general thermal management solution. These next set of patches should be positively available around Oct. 12th. In the meantime, continue to use the existing patch set that was integrated into the UME kernel by Amit back in August. Hi Charles, There's a patch to allow building against either EXA 2.1 or EXA 2.2: Patch: https://www.moblin.org/bugzilla/attachment.cgi?id=3 Moblin Bug: https://www.moblin.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=129 Launchpad bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg- video-psb/+bug/137346 The patch was incorporated in xserver-xorg-video-psb 0.2.1-1ubuntu3, which was released last week. It doesn't require a psb-specific version of EXA. Re: Creating System Seeds
Matt, That looks like a pretty close match! Not 100% obviously though. I made a blueprints article (hopefully that's the right place) for my idea and expanded a little. You can see that it's based off of my initial email: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/ubuntu-systems-manager Do you think it's realistic to offer suggestions like these so that they can be incorporated as future goals of moblin-image-creator? There's a lot to do with deploying to specific devices for which it would be nice to have some high level tools take care of spinning up the actual distribution of mobile linux. Devices could have profiles which define options as to how one can set up the OS, how one can get it onto the device and what really can be installed. I realize it might be left up to the device manufacturers to maintain their respective distributions, but I'm thinking also for the sake of PDAs and PCs which might need some tricks to get linux on them. I also think not offering a generic distro of Ubuntu mobile that can go on each device might present a moving-target issue. Lots of commercial tools (MS) tend to offer some really tight "here, let me handle the device for you" utilities. An important note is that I think this should be 100% apathetic towards the device and platform being targeted. So if I wanted to, I could choose to use the compact UIs on a PC just by specifying the right options. Or the other way around ;) The whole idea of basing this off of existing .deb source packages and cross compiling seems neat to me. I could blabber on for ages, but I bet it would get mobile & embedded ubuntu tons more appeal if the tools evolved to this level. _ Alexander Trauzzi -- Ubuntu-mobile mailing list Ubuntu-mobile@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-mobile
mobile-hw-decode status update
A first alpha of the HW video accelleration driver and infrastructure will be part of the next graphics driver (Alpha2) release which is expected to become available in WW38. For Ubuntu the most interesting component will be the VA API in the form of libva since that will be open source and a first version (0.20) will be made available on freedesktop.org once the fdo sitewranglers process https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12305 The VA API has been expanded with additional video-postprocessing features such as subpicture support for subtitles. See http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/vaapi for the latest additions. At the development side, MPEG2 and MPEG4 support is complete in the Linux Poulsbo driver. Unfortunately we still have an unresolved issue that causes many of the larger video clips to fail under Linux. H264 support will be completed next.
