Hi Rob,

Please find comments inline.

Since you are the only ones with C0 HW, could you confirm that the
Ubuntu kernel available in the PPA[1] boots and works correctly on the
C0.

I haven't heard of requiring to put any effort into this yet. We would
of course required access to the HW in order to support and help with
this port.

This has already been integrated into the Ubuntu PPA.

I will pull this into Ubuntu. A pointer to the commit ID would help to
make sure I pull in the right stuff.

Please send the commit ID when you have finished integration, so that
I can pull this into Ubuntu.

Agreed.

Moblin Kernel & Driver Status

2007-11-28 Thread Rhoads, Rob
PSB C0 HW Support
=
We finally received C0 HW. Jacob is currently root causing the Local
APIC Timer issue that requires the kernel boot param nolapic_timer to
avoid a boot hang issue.

SDIO

No changes to the SDIO patches since last status report. We're in the
process of integrating Marvell's GPL release of the 8688 WLAN + BT
drivers. We're doing the initial port of their drivers from 2.6.18
kernel and cardbus to 2.6.22 and Pierre's SDIO stack, but we will not
support this port. We're expecting Ubuntu to help out here.

Dabney Thermal patches
==
As reported previously, the Alpha release of the Dabney Thermal patches
have been applied to the
Moblin kernel. No changes this week.

USB Client Drivers
==
We've updated the kernel patch containing the USB Client C0 release. The
update contains a fix for a bug where the USB Client crashes with a
FIFO_ERROR under large bulk transfers. The released moblin's kernel-mid
2.6.22-18 release to gaston contains these changes.

PSB Gfx & Video Drivers
===
No code changes this week. We will begin integrating PSB Gfx driver
Beta3 release at the end of this week. We should have this completed by
end of next week. The closed source components will not be released on
moblin.org due to third-party license restrictions.

I wasn't able to get the PSB Gfx driver team to move to using the drm.ko
module from the 2.6.24 kernel. Instead Ubuntu has agreed, with
reservations, to try to use Intel's Gfx driver as it stands now in
Hardy. This includes the existing xorg tip version of drm.ko.

Power and Performance Testing/Optimization
==
No changes this week.

Semi-OT: X fails if launched from upstart, OK from console

2007-11-28 Thread Luigi Capriotti
Dear Sirs,

I am taking advantage of your efforts in the mobile area to build a
compact, minimal ubuntu LiveUSB system running on generic i386 PCs.

I am using MIC and created a project based on the mccaslin-lpia
platform, with the custom fsets defined below:

[i386-Image]
DESC=Packages needed for the i386 platform (Generic i386)
PKGS=linux-image
DEBUG_PKGS=
DEPS=core

[Generic-X11]
DESC=Subset of X11 components
PKGS=xorg fluxbox
DEBUG_PKGS=
DEPS=i386-Image

This way I managed to have a live test image booting correctly and, by
means of a proper xorg.conf, running X on Intel GPUs when launched with
"startx" from the console both as root and as unprivileged user. Not bad
considering the size of 120 MB in total and the superfast boot...

Now the challenge: I would like to start X as the unprivileged user
during the boot sequence, so I tried using the "session" upstart script
from Rusty:

# session
#
# This service is started automatically by init to kick off X

description "session starting daemon"
author  "Rusty Lynch <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>"

start on runlevel 2
stop on runlevel [!2]

# Run as user
exec su -l luigi -c "/usr/bin/startx -- -config xorg-intel.conf"
# Run as roor
# exec /usr/bin/startx -- -config xorg-intel.conf
# respawn
-

this way X tries to start upon booting the image, gets at the point of
showing the cross cursor and then dies (both when run as root and as
normal user), reverting at the console login prompt.

If I immediately login as root (or normal user) and execute

/usr/bin/startx -- -config xorg-intel.conf

I have a working graphical environment.

I have compared the two Xorg logfiles produced by X in these two
circumstances and they are exactly the same (except for the time of
execution), and the .xsession-errors is not produced when X is started
from upstart.

Anyone having ideas on how to tackle this issue?

Best regards

Luigi

Status report for 2007-11-21 -> 2007-11-27

2007-11-28 Thread Loïc Minier
Hi,

 * Participated in misc discussions on l10n
 * Worked with IS on misc lpia or ppa issues (buildd down, not enough
   space on some arches' ppas for kernel builds), build logs not being
   removed etc.
 * Comprehensive review of all issues Bob Spencer pushed through me
   directly; only issues where the ball is in UME's camp are l10n stuff
   (langpacks, default translations of some apps in the interim etc.)
 * Tagged "ume-hardy-regressions" the bugs I discovered as being
   critical to switch to hardy
 * Discussions on PAM / keyring integration
 * Looked/followed up some xorg bugs affecting us
 * Continued merging with new upstream changes in MIC and rebasing my
   MIC work on new git trees; code exchange with upstream MIC is not
   ideal ATM; proposed misc changes to the current processes to smoothen
   these

   Bye,
