Re: How to install Ubuntu Linux from USB Stick from Windows Vista

2008-07-03 Thread jason bronson
well your using your external ip with an internal network please change it
to your internal address or run DHCLIENT like this

sudo dhclient eth0
this will run and get an ip

looks like your using 192.1.1.160 subnet is 192.1.1.?

Non routable or private IPs include:

10.0.0.0/8 (commonly used)
127.0.0.0/8 (loopback addresses)
169.254.0.0/16 (Micro$haft range)
172.16.0.0/16 (least commonly used)
192.168.0.0/24 (most commonly used)

RE: How to install Ubuntu Linux from USB Stick from Windows Vista

2008-07-03 Thread Rafael Cardenas

Thank you, my Q1 is now running Mobile Ubuntu

But I can't connect to any wireless network, should I run some commands to
configure it?

Sorry but I haven't experience with linux

For the ehternet network, should I modify the /etc/network/interfaces file? I
did like this:

  auto lo
  iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 144.3.140.141 gateway 144.3.140.1
 netmask 255.255.252.0 network 192.1.1.160

regards

Re: Wiki cleanup

2008-07-03 Thread Ian Lawrence
Hi,
This has been needed for some time.
I do not have anything to add to your suggestions (i think they are
great, particularly the 'works on this device' which will help stop
the 'I have , can I run UME on it?' questions which
flood the IRC channel :)

I would like to help with this so lets make a wiki clean up page with
a list of jobs which need doing and then we can go for it...what do
you think?

Wiki cleanup

2008-07-03 Thread Emmet Hikory
All,
Now that there are published images for Hardy, and the initial
flurry of work for intrepid is nearing conclusion: it's time to review
our wiki pages, and make sure they are up-to-date, accurate, and
useful. Looking at the current state, I notice a few immediate
issues:

A: Not all pages are in a common category. The list (1) is missing
most of the content
B: The top page has links to *lots* of information, but doesn't read
well for those just getting started
C: Our RoadMap is a little scattered, and would likely benefit from
review and overhaul
D: The FAQ is outdated, and specifically doesn't cover some important
questions like "How can I help?"
E: We have four separately incomplete pages on creating test images
F: Many resources still point to the PPA, when we've migrated most
work into the main archive
G: Some things are hard to find (What devices are supported? How does
one customise for a given device?, etc.)
H: The nomenclature is mixed throughout the pages, heavily dependent
on the author, the date the page was written, and the current fashion
amoung those reviewing the wiki.
I: A lot of the status pages seem to have been frozen somewhere during
the Hardy cycle, and ought be dropped or brought up to date with
current status

In addition to cleaning up the above, I've some additional ideas
as to how the wiki pages might be improved, as follows:

J: Add a section covering devices people own or have tested, with
information about what works, what doesn't, etc. While those of us
active only have maybe seven or eight different devices with which
we've been testing, I'm sure there are more, and getting more reports
would help us understand which optimisations work in the general case,
and which are sufficiently specific that they need to be adjusted on a
per-device basis.

K: split into "MobileTeam", "EmbeddedTeam", and "UbuntuMobile", as follows:
MobileTeam: team structure, coordination, meetings, knowledgebase,
etc. to support team coordination roadmap, goals, etc.
EmbeddedTeam: Many of those involved seem to be focused on
handheld devices: given that there are other areas in which simplified
(or no) UI, it may make sense to separate this focus so that those
interested do not run against "Ubuntu Mobile doesn't support that use
case" as often.
UbuntuMobile: covering supported devices, user-reported hardware
compatibility reports, overviews & guides, installation paths, etc.
(note that I don't find much information about using Ubuntu in
other embedded contexts, hence no UbuntuEmbedded section)

L: Document the lpia-specific oddidtes somewhere: lots of people have
asked about installing on an Eee (or other i386 devices), but the lpia
kernel doesn't boot: knowing what is different is the first step
towards enabling a working i386 build (this could conceivably become a
todo-list as well).

M: Add clearer pointers to the UDS-Praha pages: there were a lot of
good ideas, but they're currently hard to find.

N: Bring the pages more in line with other Team pages in the wiki, to
reduce the learning curve for those more familiar with other areas of
Ubuntu

Does anyone else have other ideas as to what we could do to make
things clearer and the wiki easier to use? Alternately, any opinions
on J-N?
