I can't disagree. My objection to this aspect of the theme before I
started submitting patches wasn't "two cursors" so much as that there
were, in fact, both two cursors (when the focus was on the right) and
one cursor (when the focus was on the left).

After experimented with both "two cursors" (actually two cursors, this
time) and the current "one cursor" I think I will indeed go with two
cursors in the next patch, if only to maintain consistency with other
aspects of the theme, like MythNews. This may be delayed a bit,
though, because of other possible changes to Watch Recordings.

I'm just providing suggestions and I don't really mind what's done as
long as it works and, as you say, is visible from across the room. But
the point is that the current "slightly whiter" text showing the
selected item in the left column when the cursor is in the right column
does *not*, to my eyes, work from across the room.

Although we don't want to have any confusion about where the cursor is,
the previous "two cursor" theming was certainly easily visible from
across the room, and easily understandable as to what was the selected
item in the left column.

Surprisingly, some of this is themable. The ability to press PLAY in
the group pane is too valuable to change, though, especially when
there is only one entry in the recording pane.

Well, I still respectfully disagree. I've never pressed Play while the
cursor is in the left column, and I think if I did I might expect it to
play *all* the items in the right column one after the other (i.e. add
them to a playlist). The fact that it would play a "random" item from
the right (i.e. the last item that happened to be highlighted on the
right, or the first item on the right if navigating to a new item on the
left) seems non-obvious to me and doesn't seem like a good thing to
encourage.

I didn't start using it until 0.25, myself, going so far as to
disabling the rudimentary fan art support in earlier versions of the
Mythbuntu theme. 0.25 really improves on fan art support, however; I
found that fan art appeared for the vast majority of my recordings
without having to do anything. This is what motivated me to add full
fan art support to the Mythbuntu theme.

Thanks for the note. I last tried it prior to 0.25 (I don't remember
which version) and found it too intrusive as I like the clean simplicity
of the Mythbuntu theme, but I'll give it another go in 0.25.

PS - I've pretty much decided to indeed revert the highlighting of the
entire focused pane.

Cheers,

John

No. The theme already pushes the limits of visibility, what with grey
text on a black background and all. A dimmer grey is not going to be
visible from across the room, and the Mythbuntu theme has always
emphasized its usability as part of the prototypical "10-foot

I considered doing so when modifying the theme, but Mythbuntu's look
and feel is one that eschews lines in favor of subtle shapes and
shades. That's why the fan art, for example, doesn't have borders.

You may prefer to force the left pane to always center the
selection. In Mythbuntu/recordings-ui.xml, uncomment line 62 by
removing the . The right pane can be similarly adjusted at
line 105.

Thanks for the reply, Yeechang. If an outline doesn't suit the theme,
then maybe a more dim background shading of the selected left-hand item
would do?

2, I don't like the way that the previously selected item in the
right column retains a partial highlight when the cursor moves
left.

This is to indicate that when a recording-specific action is performed
in the left pane (Pushing PLAY, for example, or pushing MENU twice for
Recording Options) that the highlighted recording will be the target.

Hmm, personally I never press Play while the cursor is in the left
column, I would always move to the right to select a specific item
before pressing Play. Similarly, I never press Menu twice, I would
instead move into the desired column and then press Menu. I would go so
far as to be in favour of *removing* those "features", although that
would probably need MythTV code changes rather than just in the theme.

3, (Less important). I don't particularly care for the overall
brightening of the left or right columns when the cursor is in the
column. It makes the lists too bright for my eyes. In my opinion,
the fact that the cursor moves should be sufficient for the user -
we don't need anything extra to tell the user where to look.

This restores the behavior of an earlier version of the theme. The
brightness is the default one (i.e., the grey text is set grey, as
opposed to the white text being set white/bright) and is no greater
than of the title, description, and other text below. The fan art is
often bright enough that using non-dim text to indicate the current
pane is desirable.

For the record, I don't use fanart, so that may effect my opinion.

That said, I am testing a reversion of the above. Stand by.

Cheers,

John

[ubuntu-mythtv] Mythbuntu theme Watch Recordings cursor change

2012-08-26 Thread John Veness

Hi,

Regarding commit
https://github.com/MythTV-Themes/Mythbuntu/commit/e45ae3c24065a46648d59069a2f7671ddb429755
, although I agree that it is a very good idea to make the cursor work
more like a cursor in Watch Recordings and avoid having two
cursor-looking things onscreen at once, I think the current
implementation could be improved.

1, At least on my TV with my brightness and contrast settings, when the
cursor is in the right column, it is very hard to see what the selected
item is in the left column. That is, the fact that one entry is slightly
whiter than another is not clear. Could instead a more obvious marker
stay in the left column when the cursor moves to the right? E.g. an
hollow outline around the entry, or an arrow?

2, I don't like the way that the previously selected item in the right
column retains a partial highlight when the cursor moves left. In other
words, although I do think we should leave a marker in the left column
when we move right, I don't think the opposite is true.

3, (Less important). I don't particularly care for the overall
brightening of the left or right columns when the cursor is in the
column. It makes the lists too bright for my eyes. In my opinion, the
fact that the cursor moves should be sufficient for the user - we don't
need anything extra to tell the user where to look. Just because we
*can* change colours like this in a theme depending on where the cursor
is, doesn't mean that we should.

Cheers,

John
