[Ubuntu-PH] Fwd: Ubuntu Global Jam: 12-14 September 2014

Subject: Ubuntu Global Jam: 12-14 September 2014
Date: Mon, 18 Aug 2014 15:46:53 +0200
From: Daniel Holbach
To: undisclosed-recipients:;

Hello,

I write you in your capacity as LoCo admin/contact, because this cycle's
Ubuntu Global Jam is announced and will happen on 12-14 September 2014.
It's the event where a lot of Ubuntu LoCo teams get together to work on
Ubuntu together, to promote it and to have fun.

As always we have some good documentation up at [1] explaining how to
best go about planning the event for your LoCo team. We also provide a
short video to explain the most basic steps [2].

In addition to all of the above, we are going have a Hangout on Air on
http://ubuntuonair.com where you can join us to ask all of your
questions. The dates for these are:

 27 Aug 2014, 10 UTC and 19 UTC.

It's a good idea to reach out to your team early, find out who can help
with the planning of which bits and also to find out who's interested in
doing what. Once you have at least the basic details ready, add your
event to [3].

I'm sure you are going to have a great time with your team, and please
share your story about how the whole event went. The world wants to know
about all the great things you do in your country.

If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch.

Hello everybody,

if you or your team has anything you'd like to discuss at next week's
Ubuntu Online Summit (10-12 June), it'd be great if you could schedule a
session soon.

http://fridge.ubuntu.com/2014/05/28/calling-for-ubuntu-
online-summit-sessions/

The great thing about the upcoming UOS is that it will cater for both,
discussions, but also demo/instructional sessions as well.

Svetlana was kind enough to register a few placeholder sessions already, so
you might want to reach out to her to figure out how to subscribe to the
session or get it scheduled at the right time.

Let's all try to get the most out of UOS and both discuss what needs to be
done and inform the rest of the world about what your team is and has been
doing!

Keep up the good work everyone and see you all next week! :-)

Have a great day,
 Daniel

When your interaction with other Ubuntu users is entirely made up of
developers talking about bugs they need to fix and users seeking
support (IRC, forums, bug reports), your perspective changes. It's
hard to get a good idea of the big picture. What portion of users are
hitting problems in what areas? How do users who've reported bugs
feel about the experience? How are the local community teams doing?
That kind of stuff is hard to wrap your head around without metrics.

To that end, a bunch of members of the Ubuntu community have worked
together to create a survey that'll help those of us working on
various parts of Ubuntu understand where we need to improve and how we
can do better.

If you have an opinion on Ubuntu, please take 5 minutes to fill out
the following Ubuntu User-Experience survey:

[Ubuntu-PH] Resource Speaker for PLM

2010-12-20 Thread Dax Solomon Umaming
Hi guys,

This PM was sent on my FB account. I'm forwarding to this list for
anyone who's interested in advocating Ubuntu and Linux in general.

Hello sir!

I am Monique Agonos a third year student from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod
ng Maynila(PLM), currently taking Bachelor of Science in Computer
Studies Major in Information Technology. Our class will be organizing a
seminar in partial
fulfillment of the requirements of the subject Principles on Operating
Systems on the last week of January next year. It will be held at the
Bulwagang Manileno ,PLM from 2:00PM - 5:00 PM. We have chosen the Linux
to be the topic of the seminar (Fedora, Redhat if possible). A specific
distribution, if preferred by the speaker would be possible.

As far as we know Linux is an operating system that can run on a pc just
like Windows. But unlike the latter, it gives additional power which we
are not so familiar about and it's free. We believe this is an
interesting topic to discuss since only few students have knowledge on
this system software and we want to know more about this. It will be
participated by 100 students and some faculty members from College of
Engineering and Technology. In line with this, we are requesting for
some help from you by referring to us a resource speaker that will
discuss this topic.

We are hoping for the most favourable response you could extend to us.

If you decided to be a part of this academic project please feel free to
contact me:

Ubuntu-ph.org has been, most recently, targeted by numerous spam
accounts posting countless spam articles. As such, I've enabled manual
filter requiring administrators to activate an account before a user can
login while we're looking for a better alternative to blocking them out.

I've just activated yours a few hours ago, try logging in now.

There was a discussion back then on the LoCo Contacts ML about
sub-groups. IIRC, the response wasn't encouraging since sub-groups
*might* cause more harm than good since each group would have their own
goal instead of a single unified objective.

However, since we live in a country with very unique geographical
features, I believe this setup may be beneficial the group with careful
supervision. And I strongly support it!

oh, and Scriptwarlock contacted me about a partnership with Ubuntu Users
of Cebu (Cebuntu) a few days before I tendered my resignation. I'm not
sure how to go about this, so maybe the group can reply with their
suggestions.

[Ubuntu-PH] Resignation as LoCo Contact

2010-08-29 Thread Dax Solomon Umaming
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello Guys,

This is a very sad day for me since I'm announcing my resignation as
the LoCo Contact for the Philippine Team. I've thought this through and
decided it's the best for the team.

My time for Ubuntu and Ubuntu-PH has been drastically reduced for quite
some time now due to additional workload, school, family, and renewed
focus on software development (specifically the Linux Kernel and
Wammu/Gammu). And I can no longer stand by and watch while my absence
holds the team back.

I'm not sure how we go about selecting my replacement, but I sure wish
someone would volunteer themselves for this job or maybe hold an
election. In the mean time, I'm assigning Zak Elep (our previous LoCo
Contact) to stand-in for me on all Ubuntu-PH matters - _but_ only if he
accepts this responsibility, I don't want to burden him further.

== Website ==
I've already sent Zak and Loell (our forum moderator) the login and db
credentials for our website. If you need it, I only ask that you become
an Ubuntu member as the minimum requirement.

In addition, our website is closest to my heart and I will continue
working on it during my free time. I'm still working on improving the
theme and a Planet alternative that'll work on our current host.

== Official Ubuntu and Official Ubuntu Server Books ==
I already mailed the 2 books to JC, anyone who needs them will have to
contact him directly. Please make sure that you mail/bring it back since
he'll be the custodian of the books and will guarantee that the whole
team benefits from it.

Another set of free books is available[1], so the next LoCo Contact
should make sure to order one.

== Philippine Team Wiki ==
Our wiki is sadly outdated, we need someone to look after it. Also note
that we need to create/submit a monthly team report. The howto is
documented on the TeamReports wiki.

As per my initial discussion with Myra Jill, there will be an offline
and an online Ubuntu Global Jam events. This will ensure that we
accommodate PH members residing outside GMA.

The local meetup will be planned and headed by Myra Jill while we will
import talents from other LoCo teams who will be willing to teach us how
to translate packages and how to triage bugs (Time zones are such a
PITA).

The tentative dates will be as follows:
Aug. 27: IRC Session on Package Translations
Aug. 28: Offline Meetup
Aug. 29: IRC Session on Bug Triaging

Please note that we are still in the very early planning stages so
expect drastic changes in schedule and activities. In the mean time,
I'll coordinate closely with Myra and give the team regular updates.

[Ubuntu-PH] Fwd: Lucid translations are now open

2010-02-13 Thread Dax Solomon Umaming

 Original Message
Subject: Lucid translations are now open
Date: Thu, 04 Feb 2010 12:52:39 -0800
From: David Planella
To: Ubuntu Translators

Hi translators,

I'm pleased to announce that Lucid translations are now open. You can
now go to

  http://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu

and start doing your rocking job to translate your favourite distro as
usual.

Some notes:

Priorities
--

The template priorities are still not set up as they were in Karmic.
That means that although some of the most important templates are
already at the top of the list, not all of the priorities have been
entered in Launchpad yet.

We'll sort that out in the next few days and set up the priorities for
all templates. If in the meantime you see any particular one you'd like
to be further up (or down) in the list, just let me or anyone from the
Ubuntu Translations Coordinators team [1] know and we can change it
straight away.

OpenOffice.org
--

At UDS we discussed about having the OO.o translation infrastructure in
shape and being able to translate it in Launchpad. That means using the
translations done in Launchpad and exporting them regularly in the
OpenOffice.org package whenever the other language packs are released.

It is not sure whether we'll have the resources to make this happen, so
for now, we've decided disabling the OpenOffice.org translations in
Launchpad until we are sure this will be possible. Most importantly,
this will avoid giving translators false expectations that OO.o
translations from Launchpad will be used in the distro.

This does only mean that translations will not be exposed in the UI, but
they are still in the database and can be easily exposed again. We did
this some time ago for other releases already, and in order to make it
easier for those teams working only in Launchpad to reuse the
translations and send them upstream, you'll find them here:

  http://people.ubuntu.com/~dpm/ooo/

Language packs
--

During the development cycle, language packs for Lucid are generated
twice per week and automatically uploaded to the archive, so that you
can see and test the results of the translations more frequently.

On the time preceding an archive freeze before a milestone the automatic
upload will be temporarily disabled and reenabled after the freeze.

You'll see that there hasn't been a Lucid language pack update since a
few weeks. That's due to the migration of the language packs to another
server, but very soon new ones will be generated.

Firefox
---

Due to the migration to Firefox 3.6 and the work involved merging the
templates, translations are still not getting exported in the Lucid
language packs, but we're working on this.

The change you'll notice is that now there is only a 'firefox' template,
making translation a bit easier (before there were e.g. 'fifefox-3.5'
and 'xulrunner-1.9.1' templates).

I think that's all for now, if you've got any questions, feel free to
ask and...

... happy translating!

Regards,
David.

[Ubuntu-PH] Fwd: Ubuntu Global Jam coming up!

2010-02-09 Thread Dax Solomon Umaming

 Original Message
Subject: Ubuntu Global Jam coming up!
Date: Thu, 04 Feb 2010 15:29:41 -0800
From: Daniel Holbach
To: undisclosed-recipients:;

Hello dear LoCo contact,

from 26th to 28th March 2010 we will run the Ubuntu Global Jam again.
This is a great opportunity for LoCo teams to come together and work
directly on Ubuntu.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGlobalJam

The idea is to come together, have fun, learn something new and share
the great experience of making Ubuntu better together. You can run a
number of different activities, depending on what interests the members
of your team the most.

  * Bug Jams: you work together on Ubuntu bugs, fix them, triage
them, improve them, …
  * Packaging Jams: learn packaging of Ubuntu software, work on some
small packaging bugs,
  * Translation Jams: translate software, make Ubuntu usable in lots
of languages,
  * Doc Jams: have a look at Ubuntu documentation, fix it and
improve it,
  * Testing Jams: put the new Ubuntu version to the test, check it
out and test-drive it,
  * Upgrade Jams: upgrade to the newest Ubuntu version and give it a
spin!

In a few days we are going to announce a couple of sessions on IRC that
will focus on discussing and explaining setting up a jam and all the
different kinds of jams. It would be great if you would reach out to
your team, ask for their interest and review the documentation, so you
can ask all your open questions

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Jams

This is going to be a great opportunity for your team to come together
again, do something great, have fun and see yourself how awesome your
team is.

Please don't let us down and let all your team mates know.

Have a great day,
 Daniel

I can't seem to visualize the steps above so let's wait for the
community to answer your questions.

I can answer this last question though - No, it doesn't matter where the
LiveCD came from, as long as it was burned/pressed from the official
ISO. The only time it'll become a factor is when it won't boot up.

Right, I have no experience with Bayantel, but I've had experience
connecting via PPPoE.

I've had problems with 9.10 as well, but not in the networking department.

That's exactly what LiveCDs are intended for. You should be able to test
your networking capability even with just a LiveCD.

Actually, I forwarded your query to the list[1], and that's one of the
replies[2][3][4] I got. Try using pppoeconf as advised by JR Galia[2][3].

I am unsure of this. Have you tried tweaking your Authentication
Methods? Try selecting either PAP or CHAP - this worked with AT&T back
when I was in the US (although I forgot what method I used, but I'm sure
it's one of them).

The term is correct on Ubuntu since first/main users are always part of
the admin group with sudo privileges. For other distros, they prefer the
term superuser or root.

Getting back to the topic, if it did ask for a username and/or password,
just leave it blank. But this would only work on a LiveCD session[5].

I'll forward your other email to the list as well.

I'm afraid not, IRC's the only option we have for real-time meetings.
But we'll try to look up other resources we can use for the succeeding
meetings.

If that's the case, then there should be an option in Network Manager on
the DSL tab to input your username and password.

I'm not familiar with Bayantel. But have you checked your settings? Does
your router/modem provide you with a dynamic ip address? or do you have
to manually set it up? I suggest you check your XP network settings.
Also try reading the networking manual available at the wiki[1]

You have to burn the iso (by downloading it) to a usb stick. You can use
Ubuntu's USB Startup Disk Creator (System > Administration > USB Startup
Disk Creator) or UNetbootin[2] (I've been using this personally).
There's also a good tutorial available online[3].

A word of caution though, you'll have to manually partition the netbook
so make sure you have the original install and drivers cd (if you want
to dual-boot Windows and Ubuntu) and don't forget to backup your files.

Right, I suspect a configuration issue. BTW, are you connecting via a
router or do you connect directly via the dsl modem?

Re: [Ubuntu-PH] Ubuntu-PH: Request For Karmic CDs

2009-12-10 Thread Dax Solomon Umaming
Hi guys,

This has been resolved internally. My apologies if the team has been
left out, but I believe this to be a private matter.

Anyway, we have some good news. The team will be receiving 2 LoCo packs
from Canonical. The first one will exclusively be distributed in UP
through the help of Myra Jill, Rom, and Theiss while the second one will
be for general dissemination through Zak. Hopefully, we'll get it by
next week (customs tax has already been paid by Canonical) but you can
send your request early.

Make sure to include your name, complete mailing address (no P.O. box
please), and contact no.

Thanks
