[Ubuntu-phone] Landing team 26.08.16

2016-08-26 Thread Lukasz Zemczak
Hello everyone,

Multiple landings today before Final Freeze: a new dialer-app, fix for
calendar parser in sync-monitor, a bugfix release for
ubuntu-app-launch, another dialer-app with startup time improvements,
usensord with 'other-vibration' fixes, apparmor-easyprof-ubuntu with
multiple new profiles, new webbrowser-app (fixes for user agent
overrides for Google recaptcha, translation template updates, using
theme colors for UI, loading images needed at startup asynchronously)
and a big release of ubuntu-ui-toolkit (many bugfixes and
improvements).

After today we're officially in OTA-13 Final Freeze. The only landing
exception we see possible right now is the copy-paste functionality
which we might still get into our images next week. But besides that
on Monday morning we will snapshot the overlay state and, hopefully,
start testing the first release candidate.

Have a nice weekend!

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Installing Citrix client (X-apps on Nexus 4)

2016-08-26 Thread Felipe De La Puente
Hi,

I installed it using the deb package for the latest version (13.3) at:

https://www.citrix.com/downloads/citrix-receiver/linux/receiver-for-linux-latest.html#ctx-dl-eula

This package is installing the Citrix files under /opt, so for my
libertine-container with id "vivid" I found the certificates at:

/home/phablet/.cache/libertine-container/vivid/rootfs/opt/Citrix/ICAClient/keystore/cacerts/

Still haven't tried it, because I don't have an external keyboard for my
Nexus 4 and don't have on-screen Keyboard yet (I believe it's already
available on rc-proposed but I'm on stable)

Let us know how it goes!

Best Regards,
Felipe.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] shiping more ubuntu touch phoes

2016-08-26 Thread Alan Bell
the lack of continuity of supply really does rule out Ubuntu as a
platform for doing stuff on, we can't use it for commercial projects if
we would be scrabbling about for B-stock handsets. I do understand that
while Canonical is chasing the consumer self-purchased off-contract
market they are at the whim of the OEMs but it seems very surprising
that they are not opening up other methods of bringing their product to
market.

Thnks Giovano but not to worry! I took no offence to Nathan whatsover. I
know him to be very helpfull and knowlegable generally in the Ubuntu fora.
And I have learnt not to be too thin skinned in discussions in open source

Actually, I would say that Ubuntu is on the whole still one of the most
civilized and on-topic foss community projects that I frequent.

I know that that is the official response when pppl ask about a possible
new device on the cards. And I appreciate that such an announcement
would certainly be up to oems.
But if a device is actualy *not* being worked on (anymore) by Canonical,
Why shouldnt that be ok for Canonical to say so? Just like I would
expect Canonical to be in a position to confirm it is NOT currently

cooler device in the rc-proposed channel is currently on image #119,
with frieza (the M10) being on #174 now.

Anyway, if you know that you're not on the latest touch image and
don't see an image update notification, could you try running
`system-image-cli -n -vv` on the device and paste us the output? This
way we'll at least know if the system-image parts are working, with
maybe only issues with the panel not correctly displaying the current
status.

Cheers,

Subject: [Ubuntu-phone] OS and apps can't update

Hello, I have a problem on my M10 FHD (Cooler) witch is on rc-proposed
channel (r173 now). I can't receive any updates for system image or any
installed app. I even receive a notify in message indicator, but when I
open update manager it searches for updates and found nothing. There
should be updates at least for some apps for 100%. Rebooting and
shutdowning device didn't help. My Meizu MX4 is updating normally with
the same network connection.

How this can be fixed? Maybe some cache files are broken?

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] shiping more ubuntu touch phoes

2016-08-26 Thread Mathijs Veen
hi Nathan

Who said I was upset :) ? I didn't. In fact I think I am very relaxed about
it. Just trying to get the maximum info that I can before deciding on a new
device for myself.

I need a new phone after having run down 2 n4's, and a bq e45. I would
really love it to be another Ubuntu phone but i'd hate to have shelled out
a 100 euros for a sec hand N4 or Oneplus one or whatever and discovering
that a month later a new supported phone hits the market. Dont blame me too
much for asking ;)

Thanks for your response non the less

I know that that is the official response when pppl ask about a possible
new device on the cards. And I appreciate that such an announcement
would certainly be up to oems.
But if a device is actualy *not* being worked on (anymore) by Canonical,
Why shouldnt that be ok for Canonical to say so? Just like I would

developing an Ubuntu edition of say a Lumia 640.

Because there's no way for them to know. The ultimate fate--launch,
suspension, reevaluation, cancellation, etc.--literally depends on the
OEM. In the cellular industry (as with all others), the contracts come
with non-disclosure agreements. The OEM's business department decides
whether or not device development will begin, at what specs, at what
launch target, and then when that is contractually locked down, they
will determine the continuing status. The OEM's marketing department
will be in charge of any announcements, on what channels, and in what
shape communications will form.

i am of course refering to the vanishing Midori images. Also, at least
some of the buzz of months past about the MX6 must have originated from
Canonical sources ;)

No, there's no reason to think that. Chinese vendors often leak
information as a way of measuring interest. If so, this was something
that Meizu did.

But we have seen no more news or hints for months
now. So if the MX6 is -for some reason- no more, it would be cool -and
really practical info for me and a lot of others- if that could be
confirmed.

The MX6 never *was*. In fact, this is exactly my point--you have made a
decision based on a rumor without an announcement. Now, that's up to
you, but I would never recommend it. It's a very foolish thing to do.

Now imagine that an OEM (or worse, Canonical, who has no say in whether
a device launches or not) makes an announcement before things have been
determined and budgeted. How much more upset will you be if you make a
decision based on that?

You're asking Canonical to undermine their partners in a most
professional way. You're upset that OEMs don't undermine themselves in
a very professional way. You're asking about an imaginary device that
was never announced. Maybe they ran some tests and decided that the
phone's hardware wasn't compatible, or wasn't powerful enough, or wasn't
profitable enough, or any number of reasons a company might not continue
development on a model. Maybe the MX25 is coming out next week and they
shifted focus to that. In any case, if work was done on midori, it
wasn't announced and we can see that in general this is for good reason.
In fact, it's usually *illegal* to leak this information because of
SEC and other stock regulations.

Business just doesn't work that way. And OEMs don't necessarily tell
Canonical anything at all, much less in a timely manner. In the
meantime, you're on this list asking developers who don't work for
Canonical for inside information.

This is a pretty good rant, and it's not all directed at you. I'm
explaining this in detail because "Why doesn't Canonical derelict their
contractual obligations by committing securities fraud, trading insider
information, and betraying and undermining their commercial partners
plans and market advantage so that I, personally, can be excited about a
phone before it's certain that it will be released?" is a question that
comes up a lot. So I'm elaborating to give others something to think about.

The answer is because there's *zero* reason to do so, and a lot of very
expensive legal reasons not to do so, even if anybody *would* work with
Canonical again if they did.

I understand the excitement, and I've wanted to ask colleagues at
Canonical as well when I have the privilege of seeing them in person. I
don't ask, because they don't know and it's an extremely unreasonable
question.

As far as I know, there's a port for the OnePlus One available in the
forums.
It could be nice to give it a try knowing the ease to flash that device. As
soon as I can change my phone, I'll flash my OPO with UT.

On the other hand, looks like there are no more Ubuntu phones about
(previous links say out of stock).

It might need a bit more demonstration to catch the OEMs' eyes. We can't
really blame the phone makes if there's no visible market.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] shiping more ubuntu touch phoes

2016-08-26 Thread Mathijs Veen
@Matthias, your link points to the tablet. The op was asking about phones.

The only place that the BQ phones are still available, is the BQ spanish
outlet store

https://store.bq.com/es/zona-outlet

You might want to ask BQ if these are even shipped to places outside spain
though.

Also be aware that these phones are first-gen Ubuntu phones that will
almost certainly never support external screens and convergence.

All this does indeed sadly means that there is no official Ubuntu phone
currently available anymore on the market.

The only device that was 'unoficially' leaked and buzzed for a while is the
Meizu Mx6 Ubuntu edition. It seems that images for that device were even
being prepared for a while but these seem now to have dissapeared.
If the Meizu Mx6 is indeed not to be, it would be very helpfull to me if
Canonical could confirm that. I have been holding out for a new device for
quite a while now.
If there will be no Mx6 I need to explore other options: Another secondhand
N4 or possible trying to root and reflash a Meizu Pro5 or even looking at
one of the porting projects. All these options are less then ideal though
and means i will be in pionering land for the foreseeable future

Hope to hear.

cheers
