I'm not sure this is the right path - I'm not sure how much GNOME has
for mobile/touch interfaces. I think Qt/QML was the right choice, just
not Unity/Mir - which ended up too much of an undertaking. I guess I
wish there was more collaboration and standardization among different
parties instead of everyone doing their own thing - Canonical,
Sailfish/Jolla, Plasma Mobile.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Setting up a developer environment

2017-04-05 Thread amon

Thanks for the responses.

I'm only able to work this an hour or so here and there, so it
may take awhile to reach my goal.

Yesterday and today I tried to get an external disk mounted via
USB on the M10. No joy. I tried 2,3 and 4TB disks. I have a
special cable that connects to the M10's USB port and has a
female standard USB on the other side. I've tried connecting
a disk direct to this; I have also instead connected a USB
hub to that and then plugged the drive into the hub.

I know the hub is working because I have a keyboard and mouse
on it and the M10 recognizes them. However, it does not appear
to even notice the drives are there. Nothing shows up in /dev/sd*
other than the onboard sda; unfortunately there is no lsusb
command available so I have not yet figured out how to check
to see if the USB subsystem even sees it. I'm sure one of the
/proc files has the info and I will look tomorrow.

Every disk I have tried 'lights up', so they are at least
getting powered by the M10.

Any suggestions? I know this works if you get the cables right
because I had it working a year ago. Unfortunately something
important is missing from my notes because I am unable (so far)
to replicate.

Hi Seth,

I love your approach to this!
If canonical would give us a kernel and drivers for the hardware, we
could take it from there.
I would need a X driver ( not mir ), a driver for the sound hardware, a
driver for the modem ( serial + AT commands ? ) and drivers for the
other parts.

( wifi, usb, bluetooth etc )
I'd love to start hacking once the hardware drivers are available.

Do you think this is something that is achievable ?

Kind regards,
Ed

Mark Shuttleworth probably said it best when he said that they were
riding a wave bigger than them. At least all of Canonical's innovation
will live on through those who managed to ride the wave to the end. It's
just an awful pity that those who have lasted the journey so far do not
have freedom in their mindsets. Maybe the FSF's call for a FLOSS mobile
phone system has more urgency now that Ubuntu and Firefox are no longer
in that space.--

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Official end off Ubuntu Phone - Please read this because this is sad....

I really liked the idea of convergence. Ubuntu Phone also served me as a
good fallback alternative for Sailfish OS. Now there's no choice for mobile
and no convergent Linux at all which makes me sad.

Some info for those interested in switching to Sailfish now:

   - Small list of officially supported devices at https://jolla.com/
   - Sailfish for Sony Xperia devices (starting with Xperia X) to become
   available in June
   - If you're ready to devote your time to porting Sailfish to your phone,
   there's a porting guide here https://sailfishos.org/develop/hadk/ and
you're likely to find help at #sailfishos-porters IRC channel on freenode

Best regards,
Andrew

Yes, looks like dead end.
Thanks to everyone. It was a very interesting journey!

Anyway little bit shocked that Mir and Unity8 are about to close to, not just Ubuntu Phone.

Well, that's a question I can answer Click was the first generation
of the package format required to meet the unique requirements of a
mobile device such as application isolation etc

Over time, and with the introduction of the Unity 8 desktop mode, it
became clear that features were needed that Click could not satisfy
so "Click v2.0" was produced (called Snap)... which resolved some of the
issues with the phone, and also met the requirements to deploy the same
package format on the new Unity 8 desktop.

The phone has pressed on with Click, because switching between the two
is quite hard... but the desktop has been moving forward with Snap

This issue is the reason that the phone is still based on the 15.04 core
OS... since later OS releases have Snap built in, and would be
incompatible with the older Click system.

At some point of course, it will need a clean break with new devices
using the Snap format... Older devices may, or may not be able to be
re-flashed with a Snap image, since currently only 64 bit systems are
supported.

[Ubuntu-phone] Freedom

2017-04-05 Thread Seth Ciango
This is liberating if we allow it to be. We're no longer forced to be Snap
only while tethered to Unity8. We finally have control over the future of
this project. The developer team needs to speak to the community on this.

   - Who is willing to stick around?
   - How difficult would a switch to GNOME be and how long would it take?
   - What current phones on the market could the community target based
upon their openness and compatible hardware/drivers?

We do not NEED Canonical or phone manufacturers. We truly thank them for
getting us here. All the effort by the Ubuntu Phone team has been amazing
and is greatly appreciated.

We all backed this phone project financially and with hours of our lives.
Hours that we spent debugging, coding, helping someone else. Hours that we
could have spent with friends and family or on other projects.

We chose to work on this phone because we believe in the ideal of freedom
and choice. For us, the other two mobile OS's are not options. They
represent tyranny and forced conformity.

I stand here committed to these ideals and the work that has been done. I
am prepared to further invest my money and time into giving freedom and
choice to those who want it.

When he says ditching unity, does he also mean the unity desktop?
I actually like the unity desktop, there are many distros with good
gnome desktops, I use ubuntu as desktop mainly because unity has matured
nicely.

Now, if only someone found a way to install sailfish on those reasonably
priced BQ's or Wileyfoxs...

But I guess I will have to find their mailing list now.

Thanks to Shuttleworth and the Canonical teams for the attempt.

Mark's post lacks details though. What will happen of Unity 7? Mir?
And how switching back to Gnome by default reflects on the stated will

2017-04-05 Thread Paul Tait
Can't say I am surprised. I think we all knew this was coming, we were just
in denial. With the end of support for the phones and no new devices
planned it was inevitable. I think we were hoping that phones would be able
to continue in some form because of Unity8 but this puts pay to that too.

I guess we just hoped that this would be the one project that Canonical
actually sticks with and sees to fruition despite their track record.

You have to wonder about Mark. He has great vision, but just lacks the
gumption to see things through, or further than his initial idea.

I think this may be the final nail in the coffin of Ubuntu for me. I'm
tired of the let downs. Time to move on.

I'm really not sure what to do now.
I never liked Android, and an iThing gives me the shivers just to think
about.
I still have to digest this.

Oh.

I understand the process that resulted in Mark's post.

I just think it's a pity the Ubuntu phone didn't get enough traction.

last until the next generation of Linux devices. Since 2008 I'm only using
