Hi,
i can't wipe away your allegations, but i can try to put them in
perspective.

You have a point there. Ubuntu Touch is very unstable in many areas and
that will have to change. Our target audience are Linux users and that
won't change for the foreseeable future. If your grandmother doesn't
know how to bring up a terminal and execute a script to flash her
device, Ubuntu Touch is not for her. UBports only has a very small team
of volunteer developers, so marketing to Dorothy Default and Gabe
Generic does not make sense right now, it would just cause confusion and
disappointment. It's not feasible to make something for everyone without
a large team and lots of funding, at least not right now. Remember the
early days of Android? Then you know what i'm talking about. Ubuntu
Touch devices being sold to consumers too early is one of the reasons
why this project did not take off as planned. I agree with you there: UT
needs *a lot* of polish and testing. Calling, SMS, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS
and AGPS, essential apps - those are all on our to-do list. We won't get
it stable until tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. So until it's really
really good, we're targeting the nerds.
About that russian hacker comment: You can't be sure, i could be lying
to your face right now. Remember that UBports was already a thing before
Canonical ditched Ubuntu Touch. There are devices running our images out
there right now, so we could already be back-dooring a lot of devices,
maybe even yours. I like your shirt, btw, but you really need to clean
your apartment.
The thing is: It would not make sense to put all the effort of
integrating back-doors in such a niche OS. Vault 7 shows that there are
back-doors in many Devices at a layer below the Kernel, so why would we
even bother? Also, it's all free software, so all the code (except the
hardware enablement blobs that are not written by us but by the device
manufacturers) can be checked by third parties and the risk of getting
caught spying on people is pretty high.
No, seriously, you have a point. We understand that it might be
difficult for many people to put there trust in a project run by some
random nerds from the Internet. But we're trying to be as transparent as
possible. All code that ships is open source. We try to answer all the
questions in our bi-weekly Community Q&A
(https://blog.ubports.com/2017/04/15/community-qa.html). We share our
financial details with our Patreon supporters (Except the 10 Million
rubels we recieve from the KGB each month of course).

I hope that answers some of your questions. If you have any suggestions
how we can improve transparency and accountability, feel free to raise
your voice.
All the best,
Jan Sprinz, aka. NeoTheThird, community manager at UBports

Are there anybody who tried to compile Shashlink[1] on Ubuntu Touch?
Shashlink is basically an Android compatibility layer for normal Linux.
Because it would give UT the opportunity to run some apks from Android.

more freely from apps (I also created .nomedia file in

[Ubuntu-phone] Flash Meizu PRO 5 Android to Ubuntu?

2016-06-03 Thread Filip Dorosz

Hello all.

As Meizu PRO 5 with Ubuntu has depleted, I wonder if its possible to buy
Android version and flash it to Ubuntu?

Anyone have any idea about this?
Or perhaps PRO5 will come back in stock?

No, the info is correct: the *ubuntu* version number is now dynamic
(was previously hardcoded to 14.04). The chromium version is still
hardcoded until the bug I referred to is fixed (should be landing
soon).

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Porting a GNUstep application to the M10

2016-05-16 Thread Filip Dorosz

Hello.

I installed quite a lot additional legacy applications and the naming
scheme for libertine .desktop file is:

nameofthelibertinecontainer_nameOfExecutableInsideContainersUsrBin_0.0.desktop
for example:
puritine2_thunderbird_0.0.desktop

[Desktop Entry]
Version=0.0
Name=Thunderbird
Exec=/bin/true
Type=Application
StartupNotify=true
Icon=/home/phablet/.local/share/icons/thunderbird.png
Keywords=Libertine
NotShowIn=Unity;
X-Ubuntu-Touch=true
X-Ubuntu-XMir-Enable=true

starts Thunderbird perfectly.

Okay. I started over but it made little difference. I copied to
the file name:

applications/puritine2_xterm.desktop

and it now contains what I interpret you as saying it should contain,
after putting back in things other folks told me should not be there:

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=Xterm
Exec=/bin/true
Type=Application
StartupNotify=true
Icon=/home/phablet/.local/share/pixmaps/xterm-color_48x48.xpm
Keywords=Libertine
NotShowIn=Unity;
X-Ubuntu-Touch=true
X-Ubuntu-XMir-Enable=true

I have no idea where

container"_0.0.desktop

comes into the picture. Are you saying the desktop file should
have _0.0? That's the way I originally had it:

applications/puritine2_xterm_0.0.desktop

or are you saying I should create a puritine2_0.0.desktop file
like the libertine-scope.desktop file?

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
NoDisplay=true
Name=Legacy Applications Scope
Icon=/usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/unity-scopes/libertine-scope/icon.png

Keep in mind that I have not been part of the development effort
so I lack referents which are obvious to you.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Porting a GNUstep application to the M10

2016-05-13 Thread Filip Dorosz

Hi Dave.

I also think you should really reflash your device and start over.
Libertine is already on the M10 so you probably broke something while
apt-geting and trying to install libertine while it was already there.

I'd recommend creating separate chroot on the device with the new system
and using apt-get inside that chroot. It will even enable you to have
that chroot on your external drive giving you a lots of space and it
won't corrupt your main system.

This [1] how-to have necessary instruction to give you idea about
separate chroot.

I'm reading your conversation and I wondering: why?

I do like the change, and blue is not Ubuntu's brand color, but I like
it more on the phone then previous over used orange.

UI seems so balanced now.

I also found out its more intuitive because I tested it with multiple
persons who didn't use UT earlier. Nobody said it makes them
sad/depressed and they all said the UI is nice.

Only few people complain about the change on this list so, doing some

Anything that has the Bluetooth logo on it should work. If it doesn't,
it's probably a bug. Please report it to Launchpad. Some mice which have
a special "window-switching" button pretend to be fully fledged
keyboards and currently confuse the system a bit, tricking it into
thinking a keyboard would be connected and hiding the OSK (In case you
would want to work with a mouse but no physical keyboard). We're working
on finding a solution there.

You can also use a micro USB to USB-A adapter and plug USB
mice/keyboards in. Again anything that has the USB logo on it should
work.

Currently there is a known bug about the AltGr key handling for some
languages. Also, some special keys on keyboards might not be supported
yet. Please report bugs in case you'll have such special keys and they
are not behaving as expected.

Right now there is no simple way to install and launch additional legacy apps.
Yes, there is a hard manual way to do it.

We plan to fix this in OTA 11 in just a few weeks' time. It requires some
essential changes to the application launch
infrastructure that have been in the queue for a while and so additional close
attention must be paid during the QA process.

Consider using Libertine [1] (preinstalled legacy apps use this) and

When the Phone move to Xenial will it also be Snappy based finally?

So Xenial has been released :-)

My apologies if this has already been addressed, but what is the planned
schedule for Xenial arriving for Ubuntu Phone devices?

I have been using a Meizu MX4 as my primary phone for the last few months,
and I just took delivery of a BQ Aquarius M10 tablet and am setting it up
right now.   Woohoo!

Both my devices are currently on Vivid 15.04 (OTA 10.1).

What is the Xenial transition plan for these official devices?Best
wishes!

As already mentioned in a few landing e-mails, the baseline switch from
vivid to xenial is our near-term plan for stable channels. But please
remember that it's not an easy task. When we were switching our baseline
from 14.09 (ubuntu-rtm) to 15.04 long time ago it took us a few months
to stabilize the phone again. With xenial introducing the g++ ABI break
(and a few other nuances), the whole process could take even longer
since there's more things we need to consider during the switch.

The most difficult part is that we can't only concentrate on one front,
meaning: we can't just drop everything and just work on getting xenial
(devel-proposed) into working shape as our current focus needs to be on
the stable devices (vivid-overlay). That being said, we will be
preparing something similar to a 'task force' that will be taking care
of moving the xenial initiative forward. It's really hard to give a firm
schedule here - with this we still need to wait a bit.

All this means the next few OTAs will still be vivid-based with our
development focus on vivid, but then we intend to switch to xenial for
future devices.

I am on the waiting list for Meizu MX5 PRO as well, as my next phone.

Cheers,
Bob Summerwill

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] owncloud sync on the phone.

2016-04-18 Thread Filip Dorosz

Hello there.

I see you've made progress on this app. (Doing C++/Qt backend)
I know some good plain C/C++ (no Qt unfortunately) so I may little help.

I started to sorting out how to compile owncloudcmd independently and
statically so we won't have to include binary blobs in this app and also
don't have to adjust LD_LIBRARY_PATH. I'll report back here when I'll
have some progress on this.

I managed to get a couple of hours working on a UI and i have uploaded
the current code here: https://github.com/dubstar-04/owncloud-sync

and checks if a connection can be made to the server.

I think the next step is to modify owncloud-sync.sh to work with the ui,
add the ability to select source and destination folders and then tidy
everything up.

I should be able to work on this again tomorrow night.

it is a bit hacky but it works and gets owncloud sync running with a

The click you have is fine, I can build the UI, modify your

[Ubuntu-phone] owncloud sync on the phone.

2016-04-08 Thread Filip Dorosz

Hello all.

As you may know I've been working at getting owncloud file sync on
Ubuntu Touch using owncloud-client-cmd and some scripts. What I've
archived so far is working owncloudcmd client on the phone, script for
running that periodically and simple config files to adjust settings.

I've setup repository on my github so you can have a look at it:
https://github.com/fihufil/owncloud-file-sync

If someone is willing to create GUI for managing my config files it
would be really nice.
I know this (whole project) is not suitable for official store but my
guess it is for Openstore.

Any feedback if greatly welcome.

Happy CLI-hacking,
Filip Dorosz.

Thats a bug.

Workaround is to ssh from phone's terminal into localhost
so type:
ssh localhost

and you should be able to use commands from ~/bin/

You can have a look at

there is wrapper script to include new lib path that you put in

and click package that you install. (have a look at the readme)

Ad4. You can setup caldav/carddav sync with syncevolution. However
it

Installing is easy:
unzip the file:
bin/* goes to ~/bin
oc/* goes to ~/oc
then relogin if you are not using ~/bin yet and you can use owncloudcmd
command in terminal.

I'm on irc if you want to chat.
fhf at irc.rapidrage.net channel #ubuntu (we have webchat if you don't
have local client http://irc.rapidrage.org/ubuntu )

fhf bhgg nhgbhv at irc.freenode.net

I'll publish necessary scripts around Thursday on my github.

Yeah. You can show me how you installed 1.8.1 on the phone.

You don't need crontab, you can setup upstart job in .config/upstart/
(file must end in .conf like .config/upstart/filesync.conf )

with the following content:
"
description "file sync"
start on started unity8-dash

exec /home/phablet/bin/file-sync.sh
"
You only need to adjust your script with infinite loop like this:

while[1]; do
*dosomething*
sleep 600
done

How do you get around dependcies?

owncloud-client-cmd depens on some libs that are not installed.

without making it writable and doesn't influence OTAs.

I see in the documentation I could make my phone writable and install it

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Maximized windows on BQ

2016-04-03 Thread Filip Dorosz

Hi.

You just do not have enough space on the screen.
You can however get around it by switching to Staged mode.
Then You need to lock rotation while in landscape and enable window mode
again and you will be able to minimize your windows because you will
have enough horizontal space to see buttons.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] File synch - could we get owncloud-client-cmd added to standard image?

2016-04-03 Thread Filip Dorosz

Hi.

That's good point. Now I use script to sync files to and from my phone
with my computers via wifi. But I would be good to sync against central
server.
And I think that it will be easier to develop just front end for
owncloud-cmd than whole new application. But I'm not familiar with
developing for UT jet so that's just my thought.

Also does anyone know if it is/will be possible to convert
owncloud-client-cmd into a snap that can be installed later when ubuntu
touch move to snap from click?

Exactly. In my expirence gmail nowadays tend to treat everything that's
not gmail as spam (perhaps, he is being racist?).

The best solution is simple: change your provider or use your own server.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Errors trying examples in ubuntu-sdk

2016-03-03 Thread Filip Dorosz
Hello.

I'm sorry I'm replying so late.

I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64bit.
Your guess was right I was using qmlproject as it seem the most
suitable.

You cleared out all the unclear information.

By using qmake and installing 'intltool' package providing
'intltool-extract' (Qtcreator complained its missing) I was finally able
to run examples on the developer.ubuntu.com.

Thanks, I guess its time to start hacking in ubuntu-sdk then. :)

Have a nice day/afternoon,
Filip

Thanks for the reply
Im quite new to Qt creator and graphical programming in general (been
hacking in the cli for a while now).
I don't know exactly what do you mean by "running the option with
program name".

I would be grateful if you clarify that a little more.

With kind regards,
Filip Dorosz.

[Ubuntu-phone] Errors trying examples in ubuntu-sdk

2016-03-02 Thread Filip Dorosz
Hi all.

I've been trying to start learning developing ubuntu touch apps but
from the very beginning i run across problems.
First I was missing ubuntu-sdk-dev package as its not mentioned in the
docs at developer.ubuntu.com and was struggling with Segmentation fault
errors when trying to run examples from templates or from docs.
Now as its installed i don't get Segfaults but now...
When I create new project with framework ubuntu-sdk-15.04.4 it gives
following error at "6 general alerts" (im not using English version so
it may differ a little):

"/usr/ubuntu-sdk-dev/bin/qmlplugindump" zakończył pracę błędem.
Argumenty: -nonrelocatable Ubuntu.UnityWebApps
0.1 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/qml
This application failed to start because it could not find or
load the Qt platform plugin "minimal".

Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

And when trying to run any example from developer.ubuntu.com it gives
the following error:

/usr/ubuntu-sdk-dev/bin/qmlscene: symbol lookup
error: /usr/ubuntu-sdk-dev/bin/qmlscene: undefined symbol:
_ZN7QString14toLower_helperERS_
/usr/ubuntu-sdk-dev/bin/qmlscene zakończone kodem 127

How can I resolve this issues?

With kind regards,
Filip Dorosz.
