[Ubuntu-phone] Installing UBports
Today I decided to take the plunge and reflash my M10 with the UBports image. I visited their site and followed the instructions as best I could. Using the magic device tool I reflashed it and ended up with an install of Ubuntu 15.04 OTA-14. Surely this isn't right? I didn't even lose any of my settings. Can someone tell me have I gone wrong and where do I go to put my device on the right tracks for future updates? Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Idea: consider crowdfunding UBports project
There are a number of projects on Patreon I would like to support but being a pauper I simply can't spare the funds for projects that aren't essential for my day to day life. I have however just signed up for $2 because Touch has come too far to be allowed to fail now. I'd like to think I can flash my phone back some day, or perhaps upgrade to a future proof phone. About asking Canonical for financial support: It'd be pretty darn amazing to have their support, but I don't think that will happen and it would be a little awkward to ask for that. It's not their project anymore, so it's not their obligation to fund it. They poured a lot of money into Ubuntu Touch, Unity 8 and convergence and we're thankful for that. But we understand that they have to cut some costs to stop the company from making huge losses, so it would probably be inappropriate to ask them for funding. All the best, Jan Sprinz (aka. Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Thank you
Thanks for your effort. Competing with mobile OS's was a mountain to climb, and I actually thought you got pretty close to the peak! If there's negative comments on this list, it's due to how far the project came against the odds, and frustration at being so close. And that people barely had time to take in the decision. This has been one of the most brilliant communities anywhere. I hope it continues in some sense, because the potential is still world changing. Thanks for keeping the list open, and all the best! I do fully understand the negative comments. Communication was very mismanaged in the latter stages. I do wonder if that is because Mark and other higher ranking officials were agonising over the choice they had to make. It is easy to allow yourself to feel betrayed but take a step back and use your head, not your heart. As was already mentioned a lot of cash has gone into getting us this far and that is something to be eternally grateful for. I for one have a few desktop apps out now which I owe to UT, they are spin offs of another dev's phone app. So if it were not for UT I would not have gotten my head round packaging and publishing on Ubuntu. Most importantly I hate my phone, I hate every Android infested moment since Ubuntu stopped working on it. I have had the tinyest taste of perfection and how am I supposed to make do with anything else? I loved my Ubuntu phone and I can't have any ill feeling toward any of the people who gave me that experience. Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Future device support
I do think this is honest but a bit too brutal. I agree it would be much better if Canonical were feeding back into the community and allowing us to see that the wheels are still in motion. However for all its faults the E4.5 running Ubuntu is a thing of beauty. Having flashed back to android I have to admit I hate my phone. Nothing works in an intuitive way, many things are no longer easy. Phoning someone I get an alphanumeric keyboard. I need fingers the size of toothpicks to accurately dial! Things that should swipe don't swipe and settings which should be 'just there' are deeply buried. Bluetooth works and that's great. The mobile hotspot has usage stats which is pretty neat and automatically turns itself off when I disconnect which is genius. But overall it feels more clunky than ubuntu did a few OTAs back. So Canonical you are really, really on to something. All we can do at this point is wait and hope that the buzz surrounding the project can return given snap based images and some new devices. I don't get it why Canonical doesn't take this seriously. I understand they have their own group of developers and they don't need us any more? As I read posts on this mailing list I often ask myself a question how anyone over there behind the steering wheel can allow that people feel unsafe as in a bus where the driver drank a few beers for his breakfast. Personally I have a problem. I missed a very important phone call two days ago. My phone didn't ring though the volume was 100% loud. I understand there can still be problems with bluetooth after two years of development but not with a phone and messaging functions. I think I'll flash my phone with Android this week. Since two years it is an unreliable testing device which at the end will be abandoned for some other alpha solution. Now I read all this great promisses with snap etc. Canonical, i do not trust You any more. [Ubuntu-phone] Not quite goodbye, but I'm leaving
Yes it's true, I've gone over to the dark side! Today I reflashed my E4.5 with android. In recent months it has become literally unusable. I am unable to put the phone down, I am unable to push buttons whilst in a call and I have run totally out of space even though I am not really using any! This morning my alarms did not go off and my bluetooth headset would not pair, caused it seems by the lack of space. My phone also refuses to reflash with UT. So due to a combination of lack of discussion of these issues here, confirmation support for these devices will end and the fact my device won't run the next gen ubuntu I have decided now is the time to jump ship, at least until I can afford a new phone. [Ubuntu-phone] Poor state of support.
I have posted about my issue here but got absolutely no reply at all! My phone is currently beyond useless. I had noticed previously that my phone used to play up when an OTA was due, issues would plague me throughout the final days of testing and get rectified during the update itself. Now that someone has decided seemingly that we're not having an OTA15 without telling us I'm left with a terminally ill phone and nobody seems to be responding in here any more. So currently when I phone someone the phone app locks up. I can't enable speaker phone and crucially I can't even put the phone down. When I'm done calling I need to reboot. If someone calls me, same thing, however when they put the phone down I am able to force quit the phone app. I've also had issues connecting my bluetooth headset up, it kept disconnecting for no reason. When I chose to forget it I then couldn't re-pair it, it took several attempts. So, can somebody PLEASE give us a clear indication, will there be an OTA 15? When is that likely to happen? Failing this can someone please remind me once again how I reflash my phone? [Ubuntu-phone] Bad behaviour M10 and E4.5
In the last 24 hours I have been plagued by issues which have rendered my tablet unusable and very nearly made me late for work. Firstly I set my tablet on mute as I was using it at work. Later in the day I loaded a web page which played a video. The sound was on even though mute was still active. Trying to hold a conversation on Facebook via the default web browser is just impossible. Tap on the conversation and the keyboard appears, start typing and the keyboard disappears. Tap again to open the keyboard and instead a link is selected or another profile so a web page is loaded instead. Several taps later the keyboard loads and I can type. Making a mistake and tapping backspace again closes the keyboard. This was sending me insane by the end of the conversation! On a side note my alarm didn't go off this morning. The phone appeared frozen and refused to wake. I had to force reboot it in the end. -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone Post to : ubuntu-phone@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Introducing Canonical's Ubuntu Crickets
Ok, I think the problem here is that we have ticked along for at least the last year with regular updates on what is landing. Although I often don't take it in it is nice to see this regular reminder that things are happening. Ever since I first got my handset there has been a very clear statement about when the next OTA is due and what will be in it. On the launchpad page there has been and OTAxx tag with bugs marked against it to track this. Now there are no daily updates and this tag is not present at the moment. So I can understand the confusion, it isn't that people expect constant updates so much as the fact that this familiar pattern of updates has broken down with no warning or explaination. I have to confess I was wondering too what is happening with the next OTA. I have no doubt this is the Christmas season and probably people working on some very big changes so I'm not worried. I do think sarcastic posts like that which started this discussion are a bit distructive though sowing bad sentiment. One gripe I do have is that this group seems to have all but ground to a halt recently. Where is the Ubuntu touch buzz now? Where is the discussion taking place? [Ubuntu-phone] Multiple strange behaviours E4.5
This afternoon I was replying to texts on my phone, 2 or 3 replies in the keyboard began retracting after each letter was typed and took several attempts to get it to re-appear. Sometimes when I typed a letter a backspace was also typed first, making it impossible to complete a sentence. This would happen both through the indicator reply and in the messaging app. Persist in trying to type and eventually the phone would have a 'mini reboot' where the splash screen is displayed but then when I get back into the interface the reply to the text is still present. I rebooted to cure it which worked for one reply. I then phoned someone and the dialer app made the call but the name and phone number were not displayed, it was a blank screen with the red put down button. But it was not possible to put the phone down, I had to reboot. Since this it seems to be a 50/50 gamble as to whether it works or not. The indicators have changed too. I have a keyboard layout indicator that wasn't there before and the network one is now called 'indicator-network. It is blank, no option at all and going into settings and wifi the only option present is previous networks. My phone currently is not auto-connecting to wifi and I have no way of manually doing so. I Have been eagerly awaiting actually being able to use bluetooth since the day the BQ 4.5 was released, every month there's a new issue of some sort or another. In this day web based software is perfectly valid and acceptible and if this is not enough the wonder of open source allows YOU to step up to the plate and build whatever is missing. Most importantly Canonical understands their own limitations and are not trying to exceed them. They havn't called Ubuntu Touch an Apple killer or anything such, they haven't claimed the masses need this. Nobody has called it production ready. So, if this is not for you then you have only yourself to blame. Linux has freedom of choice at it's heart so choose something else, Apple, Android, Windows, whatever floats your boat, get stuck in and make those changes that are needed or sit tight and be happy with the knowledge that the system is evolving. But whatever you do, don't moan about it to the people who are getting along just fine. -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone Post to : ubuntu-phone@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Last week, I actually used this alongside my friend who was using Google Maps on a Nexus 6P, and I was getting a faster and more reliable location detection (using unav on Nexus 4). The Nexus 6P also had a network connection, while my Nexus 4 was offline (my friend was roaming, I was not). So, overall, the location detection is brilliant in my experience over the last couple of months. Unav is also quite nice, but could still do with a few small improvements to improve it's reliability. If this is the case it narrows down to either the reliability of the UK 3G network or an issue with my handset. I do keep meaning to try using unav on my tablet using my phone as a hotspot. I'll give that a go next chance I get and see what happens. -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone Post to : ubuntu-phone@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-phone] An android confession
I have a confession to make, and I'm not proud of it. Yesterday I turned away from my devices and used an Android phone to navigate to my destination, and it felt good! I have no idea if it's just my handset of unav in general but recently it seems to be physically impossible to set a route to anywhere. Most of the time it just sits there telling you it is searching for a route before eventually giving up. After many open, set route, close, set route, reboot, open, set route cycles I may get it to work but it seems to get bored and give up after a while, just hanging and not tracking my position on the map or giving directions. Waze on Android on the otherhand has has a makeover and is looking fantastic. It knew where I was right away with no delay whatsoever, plotted the route in a flash and all the things I need to be paying attention to such as speed cameras are nicely highlighted on screen. It now even tells you how long a traffic jam is and how far through it you are. It handles getting disconnected from the internet seamlessly and all you have to worry about is the driving. I would be intrigued to know how this free app is funded. I'm a firm believer though that anything that can be done, can be done better open source. This certainly sets the bar. Does anyone know if there are any outstanding gps issues either with touch or with unav itself right now? The journey I was making was to a group programming event in London. Both my phone and tablet turned some heads there and it was nice to be able to show them off to people who actually appreciate the workmanship. -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone Post to : ubuntu-phone@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-phone] A week using both Android and Ubuntu on BQ
I have now had the time to spend a little time using both my E4.5 and my girlfriend's new Android equivalent. I thought I would bring up a couple of differences that spring to mind. Mainly mobile internet. It crawls, it is patchy, it is virtually unusable on my e4.5. I put this down to my network and never thought anything of it until I realized the android version doesn't suffer like this. Is there anything currently affecting 3g/2g access in touch? Also satnav, possibly because of the previous issue I'm finding the default satnav refuses to accept a route, it sits there for a while and then says it can't plot the route. Try it a few times and it will work. It will track you on the map but it will never get as far as giving you directions. Currently using the satnav is a frustrating dance of load, set route, close, open, set route, reboot, repeat until it works. OsmScout simply crashes at random. Of course on android I can simply download Waze. It seems that either there is something wrong with my sim card, my replacement phone or with touch. -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone Post to : ubuntu-phone@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-phone] And now for something not entirely different
Thanks to the amazing service provided by BQ and also the users of this list I found myself with a replacement for my broken phone and a discount code for the BQ store. I opted to buy a phone to replace that unbearable android monstrosity my partner has. Knowing she would never get along with Ubuntu as it's different to what she's used to I opted for the Android model and thought nothing of it as it's the same phone. I was mildly surprised by what turned up in the post. There is no doubt it is the same phone as mine yet it is quite different. The first thing I noted is that the little pin for removing the sim cards only has one spike on it, the one for opening the SD card slot is missing. So I looked at the SD slot and was greeted by blank plastic, no cover there at all! 2 sim slots just the same but the power button is in the wrong place. Where the power button should be is what looks like another sim slot, but this time for housing the SD card. The notification light is in the wrong place and blinks in an entirely different manner to mine. All in all it kind of felt like returning home to find someone had rearranged all the furniture! It will be very interesting to see how this new handset compares to mine from a usability standpoint (crashing, hanging, overall speed, etc). -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone Post to : ubuntu-phone@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-phone] One week with the M10
And what a frustrating week it has been. I think I've discovered the rough edges and I'm not ready to let go of my laptop just yet. So here's a list of issues I've been dealing with: 1. Using my bluetooth keyboard with trackpad is a real pain as whenever I go to move the mouse cursor it immediately switches between several running apps, usually settling back on the scopes (my guess is that this is simply the price you pay for being tight and only spending £10 on a keyboard) 2. The setting to turn off the screen after x minutes says 'don't worry, this won't turn off when you are watching a video', however this apparently does not apply to youtube! 3. As we all now know youtube videos lose video/audio sync pretty much right away. Mine also kept briefly pausing and once in fullscreen (loaded in firefox) it apparently wasn't possible to back out to normal again. 4. On my keyboard at least escape does not work and neither does ALT + F4. 5. In desktop mode using the keyboard to delete emails it does not select the next email automatically, leaving you to click, delete, click, delete, click delete. 6. Facebook (firefox) can't back out of images displayed full screen. Not a bad list really. None of it seems too difficult to deal with, but for now I'll be keeping one hand on my laptop. -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone Post to : ubuntu-phone@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Tagger not working?
I have now transferred a file directly onto the tablet and that will read, this suggests that trying to read them directly off a screen is confusing the app. I have done the same with the codes I need to read and it doesn't work. Inverted the colour, doesn't work. Other people here using android or ios can read them just fine. I have attached one of these codes to the bug. Could you please take a look for me? I'm on 10.1. I'm having to scan codes displayed on my desktop screen for work. I've been looking everywhere but I haven't yet managed to find one off screen to try. They're everywhere until you need one! On 27 April 2016 at 11:23, Michael Zanetti wrote: > Did you upgrade to OTA-10 or are you still on the initial release > (OTA-9.5)? Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Tagger not working?
I have raised another bug as I have discovered my inability to decode QRs is a separate thing. I have tried using example codes found online, big and clear. I have tried taking a photo, cropping and using that photo. Nothing decodes! On my phone it was effectively instant. I did randomly decode the letter V from god only knows what when I wasn't even pointing it at a code yesterday. Can anyone else get this to work on their M10? This is on the M10, on my E4.5 tagger works beatifully. [Ubuntu-phone] Tagger not working?
It seem that tagger is behaving weird, the image is displayed the wrong way up making it near impossible to centre on what you want to scan as it always moves the opposite way and messes with your mind! I haven't been able to scan a single code yet, it just doesn't pick them up. It was very quck on my phone so this surprised me. Is this known? I'm not sure wher to look for a bug. -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone Post to : ubuntu-phone@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
