All my family still run UBphone or UBports devices (5 devices E4.5 and
M10) and we're more than happy with them. I ordered as well the Purism L5 and
will see
what we will get (and when).

Btw: All interested folks in UBphone and UBports devices should move to
the now working list (thanks, Florian!):

UBports-Community mailing list
ubports-commun...@list.ubports.com
https://list.ubports.com/listinfo/ubports-community

as this list will be closed soon.

Using a lema of Stanislav Lem: Who reads the ubports.com website will not find
the mailman page, who finds it, can't subscribe, who even can subscribe, at the
end can not post.

An admin in the UBports forum said to me, that there are mailing list but
nobody uses them.

I also agree with that approach. Part of this joint announcement should
be that the UBports mailing lists are working and open (i.e. self subscribing
should work and the normal user list should not be moderated). Then
every UBports user can do his/her own choice: tg groups, forum or
mailing list, or all of them.

Because the list I'm subscribed to (ubports-commun...@list.ubports.com)
is moderated and my posts are not released, even after many days. Just
go and check this out. Other people I know of could not even subscribe

Said this, and seeing that the UBports core team is unwilling to change
its mind re/ mailing lists, I will (and all can) use just this list here, at
least as long as it is functional. The audience seems to be around 2957
members (see https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone ) If I have something
to share or something to document which could be interesting for others,
I will do it here and anyone is free to read things here or in other

Re/ Telegram groups, this chattering is IMHO not an option for any useful
technical discussion. It's a pity (and error) that the project has no
active mailing lists, like we have had in times of Canonical and BQ.com.
I tried to change this, but no way :-(

[Ubuntu-phone] How To Use OSM Tiles Offline with uNav

2019-05-30 Thread Matthias Apitz
rdata/system-data/opt/click.ubuntu.com/navigator.costales/current/nav
cp -p index.html index.html.orig
vi index.html
```
Note: the URL `http://{a-c}.basemaps.cartocdn.com/rastertiles/...` appears
three times
in the file. Change only the first location for `/voyager/` because this is
also
what you want to pick-up in the `Settings` menu of `uNav` for the value:
```
Mode
Online

Online style
Carto Voyager<---
```
That's it as changes.
One final note: You have only offline tiles for small places and not the world
between.
So, you can't slide over the world, for example from Munich to Havana. If you
leave your location of offline tiles you will see only a white map in `uNav`.
The way to move is configure in `Settings` some other `Online style`,
for example `Mapbox`. Or configure locations as `Favourites` to jump over the
Ocean.
[Ubuntu-phone] Are there any attack vectors based on SD card?
2019-05-27 Thread Matthias Apitz
Hello,
Last Saturday I went to a big tech market to buy a new SD card for my BQ E4.5.
I bought a SanDisk microSDHC UHS-I 16 GByte. When I pulled it our from its
plastic cover it was easy to open and I already though that someone opened this
plastic once. I plugged it in and ... it contained pictures in a DCIM dir,
a file Kontacts.vcf and more stuff, some Android directories etc. I returned
it to the shop and they were surprised as well and gave me a new one, now
really empty.
What I'm asking me: Who is so "intelligent" and returns such SD to the shop,
even
hang it into the place where new cards are (or maybe the shop staff did so)
but in any case without at least formatting the SD? And why at all?
Or is this some new attack vector distributing trojans or malware on SD cards
through shops?
I asked the same in the UBports forum, but it was declared as OFF TOPIC
there:
https://forums.ubports.com/topic/2768/are-there-any-attack-vectors-based-on-sd-card
Thanks
[Ubuntu-phone] Need some help with the app Notes
2018-12-30 Thread Matthias Apitz
Hello,
I've got no answer on this in the UBports Forum :-(
Maybe someone is still reading this list and can help me with this:
I do not understand in the notes app how to make the 2nd and next item in a
list.
I can type, for example:
1. abc
   xyz
   uvw
But what I have to do/type to get:
1. abc
2. xyz
3. uvw
..
Is there some manual for the Notes-app?
Thanks in advance
matthias
PS: Me and my family we are still using 4 devices BQ E4.5, one with OTA-15
of Canonical, three with different versions of UBports.
I sent it to BQ.com in Spain for repair and they swapped the screen for
120 Euro (incl. shipping). It returned yesterday and it's my old device
as I can see from markers with a new screen and OWA15 installed. I will
Hi,
Thanks for the hints.
Would be nice if we could have a mailing-list too (as we have had and
have still for ubphone). Yes, I know (and I'm subscribed to) there is one
for UBports, but it is moderated and dead.
Hi Terence,
I saw the source in LP too, but have no Ubuntu infrastructure to compile
it and make a click. If you are able to do this, that would be really
great!
Hello,
Caused by a hardware fault I lost all the apps on my BQ E4.5 (OWA15),
among other the app 'KnownDict', a dictionary application for files of
StarDict layout. Does anybody have some backup of this .click?
Thanks
Hi,
I called bq.com to initiate a repair and they asked me to try first some
'factory reset'. As this was not possible to initiate from the power and
vol-+ buttons, I ssh'ed into the brick and run something like:
$ qdbus --system com.canonical.SystemImage /Service FactoryReset
(I say 'something' because this gave some error about missing qt5/bin/qdbus
and I used at the end qt4/bin/qdbus directly)
This reset the device to factory state and started after boot the first-time
configuration dialogue... The touchscreen does not allow to walk
through, i.e. it proofed that the problem is hardware related. Now I
can't even connect anymore by SSH. End of the story. The device must be
repaired or send to dustbin.
nearly bricked, i.e. only some small areas of the screen is responsive on
during my vacation. For communication I have my BQ M10.
At home I will move to my UBports E4.5 and will see what I could do with
[Ubuntu-phone] E4.5 Touch-screen problems
2018-08-27 Thread Matthias Apitz
Hello,
This report is about an E4.5 still running the latest OWA15 from
Canonical. After working for years, my device now shows serious issues.
I'm sending this report to the list in the hope that it rings some bell
for someone. After my vacation I will switch to another (UBports E4.5) device
as daily phone, letting this (with its faults) for further
inverstigation. Here is what happened yesterday, from one day to the
other:
The problems started (or were 1st realized) when I wanted to use
the TAB in the terminal-app (to expand directory names). The exact description
of this problem is below #2. But, we start first with the most
dangerous one which turned out after re-boot to try to solve anything.
#1 -- PIN entry
As said, I rebooted and was asked for the PIN of SIM1 (which was 4708).
I realized that not always pressing a digit gave a short signal of that
key (making the press visible) and also not a dot in the line of the PIN.
As there are only dots and no numbers, I can't say what exactly gave the
key press. I'm only sure that I pressed the correct ones. The device said always
(I tried this procedure 5-5 times, resetting the SIM in another E4.5) something
like
'Wrong PIN, 2 intents left'. After the second ("wrong") PIN, it raised a warning
box, that it would now be me last attempt and I'd have to use the PUK after
failing again, a box together with an OK-bar to press. Pressing the OK-bar did
not give any visible result and I have had to take out the SIM, reset the
PIN counter in the other E4.5 for the next try from fresh -- same procedure
and same error result. I realized, that (jumping over the PIN entry for the
1st SIM) I could enter fine the PIN for the second SIM (which was 1265).
After 5-6 times of entering the PIN 4708, I changed the PIN of this SIM using
the other
E4.5 from 4708 to , i.e. using only the first row of the PIN entry
field. This PIN worked fine now, and the device initialized fine with both
SIM.
Bottom line: It seems that the PIN entry field gave wrong digits, the first
row () and second row (1265) worked fine.
Change Request: The entered digits should be visible as an option (like they're
in the Wifi or Dekko dialogues, for example).
#2 -- Terminal-app overlay row for layout and special chars
The terminal app starts without the on-screen keyboard (OSK) but with a (orange)
row for changing the "layout" between "Control Keys", "Command Keys", ...
This row works fine, i.e. let change between the layout modes and for example
commands from the "Command Keys" bar are sent and executed in the terminal-app,
or special chars from "Control Keys" like ^C are sent too. It stops working
completely when the OSK is raised, and the row is now above the OSK. It does not
toggle between layout and does not send any char anymore. Btw: This was the
initial problem I saw which let me re-boot the E4.5 to see if this would
solve this problem.
#3 -- Side bar
I have had on my left side bar to launch apps the following icons (from
bottom to up):
Ubuntu -- dialer -- messages -- contacts -- SystemSetting -- Cam -- ...
Pressing 'SystemSettings' did not start this app anymore from there, only
from the desktop. It started working again what I removed one app below
this ('contacts'). All other app starts from this bar worked fine.
#4 -- Re-boot dialogue
Long pressing the power button gives the dialogue box to choose between
'Power off' / 'Restart' / 'Cancel' as three bars to press, names from
top to down. From this dialogue only 'Power off' and 'Cancel' are working,
the bar 'Restart' does not give any visible result.
Thanks for reading. Any ideas?
Pressing the BQ's volume butons does not make the cam taking picture.
Pressing the button on the stick, makes the screen coming out of dark, i.e.
some visible effect has. Will look into messages to see if I could find out
[Ubuntu-phone] cam app && selfi stick
2018-08-20 Thread Matthias Apitz
Hello,
My son bought in some anything-for-1-euro-shop a selfi stick, a really
useless device, but anyway. It has a small cable with an earphone plug and
a button supposed to fire up the cam to take the picture. Ofc it does not
work with our BQ E4.5, ofcourse not. On plugin the BQ thinks an earphone is
attached and offers sliders to adjust the volume. And ofcourse pressing the
button has no visible effect and does not make the cam taking any picture.
Any ideas about this?
Thanks
matthias (still using the last Canonical OTA)
Florian et all,
I was (or better, I am) an active member of this mailing-list here and
you, Florian, know me as an active member of the UBports forum. It's a
pity, that UBports does not use for technical communication a
mailing-list (like this one). The forum is fine but tg is not a real
alternative, esp. when it comes to exchange technical stuff, like log
Why we do not high-jack this living list here for UBports?
Check if you have a lock file like config.ini.lock in
~/.config/connectivity-service
and if so, remove it; this issue came up the other day in the UBports
community.
In general, it would be nice if someone from Canonical or even BQ.com
could shet some light on this OTA update.
Re/ 'too insecure to be usable': The problem does mean, that an attacker
could read your HTTP (or other unencrypted traffic in the Wifi), but does
not mean, for example, he could read your HTTPS traffic with your bank
account (and I do not even do any online banking from anywhere). So targets
are more company networks and the internal (unencrypted) traffic there,
and not your smartphone.
Btw: I compiled wpasupplicant from source on my FreeBSD netbook which is
now fixed.
I saw this too already in the UBports Forum:
Would be interesting to know what drivers or blobs they use to control
the GPS and GPRS chips.
Btw: Me and my family (4 devices BQ E4.5 and 1 M10) we are still using
the latest OTA as daily phones and I switched one already to UBports
without any problem.
Thanks, Marcin.
I managed to install the app in my BQ E4.5 and subscribed my
mobile number successful. Now, I'm stuck in how to proceed. When I want
to write something, it asks me to pick-up from the contacts someone. The
contact app starts, let me mark someone (my other mobile device) and on
return it has no contacts in the TextSecure app. What I do wrong?
Can someone please ping me on my device number? Thanks
One should NEVER EVER click on such links and one should switch off HTML
rendering, auto image down load and such fancy crap, in any Mail client,
for example as well in Dekko. HTML rendering and image download at least
shows the bad guys that you received and opened the mail, sometimes
with one pixel sized 'pictures' which you even do not see.
The sender addr in question is well known for such mails.
Are there any plans in UBports re/ a 64-bit hardware and snap support?
In general, I think, without having some hardware OEM partner on board,
as it was (or is) BQ.com for Canonical, it will be very difficult (if
not impossible) to get more devices into the world and with them a
bigger user community.
Ed,
There are no OpenSource drivers for the used hardware. That's why the
Ubuntu phone uses an Android kernel to access them.
Before coming to this device and community, I used another mobile, the
GTA-02 running a Linux. Maybe it's time to go back to this now and see
how far they get: http://www.tinkerphones.org/
Please note the change in the RT (round trip) value from ~50ms to ~270ms and
back to ~50ms. The (reproducible) change happens went I stop real
traffic through the BQ, in this test case I just have a SSH session from
my netbook to some side and running a top command there. When I stop the
top command (which does every second a new output to the terminal through the
SSH), the RT value goes up. It goes down again when I restart the top.
There is no visible change in the BQ status line, i.e. it is not going
from 'H' to 'E'.
What does this mean?
Is there some way to query with modem AT commands the status and quality
of the data connection?
Does this mean that this switch repaired as well the OSK in other apps,
or is is still not working or was never broken for you.
Could you please all spend the time to describe:
- what is not working
- what is still working
- what is again working after some change
- all other visible side effects (like the flickering in some other
  mail).
And, is someone in Canonical or in BQ.com still with us and looking in
this?
Again, this does not sound as a software bug introduced with OTA-15
(which is already out for weeks now, Feb 8). There must be something
else what triggers this...
Hi,
Does this happened from one moment to another without having
done/installed anything before. This does not sound like a hardware bug.
And as software probleme for me it sounds like something went wrong
during some software change or some malware coming down via web browser.
First idea would be to delete anything below
~/.local/shar
~/.cache
~/.config
Last resort would be a reset to factory state.
At the same time I'm online with my BQ using it as an AP to Internet and
the BQ shows the letter 'H' for its data mobile connection. All fine.
Are you talking about the Telegram app or something else, browser based?
What exactly is 'navigating with Telegram'?
Have you done some own tests, i.e.:
- open the Tg app
- write some stuff to someone
- and while writing, do a call from the landline phone on your desk or
  from some other mobile to your BQ
Have you test this? What was the result?
SSH is a serious issue. Of course it is not enabled in the default image
of the device, but it is essential for folks who want make really use of the
device. And yes, the ssh daemon is only accepting public key
authentication. But what about bugs (and exploits for such bugs) below the
level of authentication. That's why I requested some kind of firewall
rules to limit access to such ports based on source IP addr, for example.
+1 (even if it would run Android v6)
The best option, apart of the current OTA-15, before having a new snap
device would be the new Nokia 3310: no viruses, nobody is spying after you or
collecting your Internet data.
Hello Robin,
Your mail dialog with Giovano Iannotti ,
was copied to a public mailing list and I do Cc: this. Please keep this in
mind when answering.
I saw the demo of your new device and was thinking in spend money. But,
I would like to have a phone based on any Linux or FreeBSD system, not
on Android. I'm not interested in a dual boot device, i.e. phone based
on Android and whatever additional system. I wanted to let you know this
and you might just ignore it or think if it fits with your future plans.
Thanks for your time reading this.
Kind regards
I do not have it quite often, and if it happened I just recharge the
From the look it seems to be a really cool device. But, they suffer perhaps
the same problem: no open source drivers for the atenna chips (GPS, GPRS,
I do own a BQ M10 tablet. This is a fine device, but not a phone. I does
not even has SIM slots, and if it would has, it is a bit complicated to
held it on the ear for phone talking :-)
Having said this, when we could have an image from Canonical for the M10 with
snap?
Rodney, three questions about that:
The Fairphone 2 is, AFAIK, a 32-bit device. What will be shown at MWC,
announced by Canonical, will this be snap or click based?
The word 'image' for the thing the Community could build, hides some
fundamental detail: At the moment we need some Android kernel parts to
control the hardware of the mobile device. Do you really think that
there will be other images apart of the 'officially supported images' in
the near future?
Why Canonical is not supporting the existing BQ E4.5 and E5 devices with
a new officially supported image and why you leave us alone (apart of security
updates)
and without any visible upgrade path, not even to a new hardware?
I was not talking about snap in general, but snap for a next phone.
There was a clear statement that this will require a 64-bit kernel.
  From: Matthias Apitz
  To: Klx Rix
  Cc: Olx Max , <@[]>
  Subject: Re: Fwd: WG: Leserbrief
but sending is denied due to a broken mail addr in Cc: header, of course it's
broken,
see the addr `<@[]>´. It seems, that Dekko can not handle the mail addr
correctly which was in Cc: JW%Lex-MUC@x.x
In addition, Dekko pops up a message box with the error (to fast to make
a screen shoot of it) and just drops the edited text without any chance
to save the text and/or correct the broken mail addr. Lucky I could
fetch it with my MUA from the IMAP Sent folder.
NAK. Me and my family run three BQ E4.5 OTA-15 devices as the daily
phone, I since April 2015, my wife for moths and my son now too. All do
fine, apart of smaller issues (like Dekko not saving sent mail to IMAP
Sent folder, and the like).
I run my device in addition all days 18 hours as Wifi AP
to Internet for my FreeBSD netbook and have never problems with
this. Using web browser for listening audio life streams, reading mail
and sending with Dekko, Telegram, uNav with OpenStreetMap offline tiles ...
these are more or less my daily use case.
Overall a fine device!
What do you mean with "it resets"? A crash of unity or a reboot? I do not
Don't you have SSH access, or ADB?
I would create a new dir in phablets HOME and move (use 'mv' and not
'cp') all these files, but  not 'log', to this dir. Reboot and hope that this
triggers
the download again.
Hello,
My son (new BQ E4.5 user) asks me, if he could play the game Hay Day on
Thanks
Ok, I managed it to work by moving ~/.config/dekko.dekkoproject/* to the
new device, removing the unneeded accounts with the GUI (thanks for the
hint) and changing the remaining account in the file
dekko.dekkoproject.conf with the editor. Interestingly, in the past the
accounts have been of type 'IMAP_SMTP':
[9f0373f2-8182-4679-852e-079f0e833dbc]
accountType=IMAP_SMTP
identities\1\address=g...@unixarea.de
identities\1\organisation=
identities\1\realName=Matthias Apitz
identities\1\signature=Sent from my Ubuntu phone\nhttp://www.unixarea.de/
...
while accounts you create from scratch are of type IMAP *or* type SMTP, which
IMHO is somewhat nonsense.
Anyway, Dekko is working fine with this with one exception: sent mails
are not stored in the IMAP Sent folder. They are stored there when I use
another MUA (mutt) or the webmail frontend, i.e. the Send folder itself
is fine.
Any ideas?
I did in the past experiments with OSMScout, esp. to see how I could
store the maps/tiles locally and use them in mode offline, i.e. w/o
access to Internet. Later I moved to uNav which has a fine offline mode,
which even can be a bit enhanced to be able to store the tiles on the microSD.
If you use IMAP to read your mail, how to you expect notifications? This
would mean, that Dekko would poll every now and then for new mail and
this would keep the device up and drain your battery. For me it is fully
ok, that I do check for mail, if I have time and I'm interested in
reading mails.
I have ny own BQ E4.5 since around April 2015; and I have since then
configured three different accounts in it, and all of them have in the
account the data/credentials for SMTP and IMAP, which I think is quite
normal.
I have some other E4.5 and a M10 and could never again configure it this
way. I always just copied over ~phablet/.config/dekko.dekkoproject
This time, in the BQ for my son, I did not wanted todo it this way,
because I wanted to show/train him, how it should be configured from
scratch, and because it is his credential and I do not want to copy over
my credentials.
Btw: How one could remove an account from the Dekko through its GUI?
[Ubuntu-phone] BQ E4.5 OTA-14: Dekko && account
2017-01-26 Thread Matthias Apitz
Hello,
I'm preparing a new, fresh BQ E4.5 with OTA-14 for my son. He has a mail
account on my server with IMAP and SMTP access. When I create in Dekko a
new first account for him, Dekko is asking me if this is an IMAP or SMTP
account (and some other nonsense accounts like Gmail or Outlook). I'm
really asking me, what does this mean. For me it's *one* account, with
downstream IMAP and upstream SMTP...
How this is supposed to be configured, Dan?
Any ideas
