Heads up there is active discussion about forking Unity 8, and
continuing on as a community project. Go to https://unity8.org/ &

amazing and is greatly appreciated.

We all backed this phone project financially and with hours of our

We chose to work on this phone because we believe in the ideal of

They represent tyranny and forced conformity.

I stand here committed to these ideals and the work that has been

[Ubuntu-phone] Snap Update?

2017-04-05 Thread Mitchell Reese
So have been trying Android on my Pro 5 for the past couple days -
arggghhh! Such a clunky system after Ubuntu Touch! Will flash back
shortly - any update yet on snaps, and the next stage for where touch is
going? I'm particularly interested in the M10 tablet - has the landing
channel advanced to snaps yet? Would be great to have a timeframe from
the devs about what's happening - or even an indication. Please - don't
leave us with android as the only option!

You can do this easily by disabling data when someone calls - pull down
the network drawer from top of device.

[Ubuntu-phone] Future device support

2017-02-26 Thread Mitchell Reese
For the record, both the Meizu Pro 5 and the M10 tablet have 64 bit
processors. Until we have more 'official' communication about which
devices are supported going forward, a bit too soon to bail on the
project. Looking forward to seeing what happens once the snap image
comes to devices. Hopefully we'll hear more information soon.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Ubuntu at MWC in Barcelona

Rodney, three questions about that:

The Fairphone 2 is, AFAIK, a 32-bit device. What will be shown at
MWC,
announced by Canonical, will this be snap or click based?

The FP2 port is like any other current device on UBports. It is the
same phone image base as all other current devices. There are currently
no snap based images for phones or tablets.

The word 'image' for the thing the Community could build, hides some
fundamental detail: At the moment we need some Android kernel parts
to
control the hardware of the mobile device. Do you really think that
there will be other images apart of the 'officially supported images'
in
the near future?

An "image" in the snap world will just be a thing which contains a set
of default installed snaps, which you flash on a device. This means at
least the ubuntu-core snap, a kernel snap (which may be kernel +
android container bits, i'm not sure if the specific there have been
ironed out), and the unity8, mir, pulseaudio, cups, etc… snaps. It will
not be the same as how system images work today.

I see no reason why there couldn't be unofficial ports, and soon after
we have the details worked out on how to build those images and flash
them to devices.

Why Canonical is not supporting the existing BQ E4.5 and E5 devices
with
a new officially supported image and why you leave us alone (apart of
security updates)
and without any visible upgrade path, not even to a new hardware?

This is not something I am able to answer.

For the record, I also find it a bit irritating at the lack of
communication from Canonical - keeping the community in the loop seems a
no brainer to me. That said, I think its too early to tell what will be
supported, and what won't - how easy it will be, etc. I think this is
mainly because no one really knows yet. Once the project is snapified
we'll have more info, even if that involves working out ourselves what
we can flash the system on.

I'm going to throw my ring into the hat and defend Canonical's lack of
communication. Given how people have been jumping on /every/ bit of
'official' media to point to the demise of this project, I can
understand how Canonical might want to stay silent until they know what
is going on. Personally, I think this sucks, but can understand the idea
behind it. Lets wait and see what happens.

Here you can see the different partitions on for example Nexus 5 [0]

Try wiping cache as i said:

reboot to recovery
adb shell "rm -r /cache/recovery/*"

This gets rid of old update tarballs.

There is no personal data in cache, the /cache/recovery/ is only used
for updates. The reason why it stores it there is so tempararly store
it there while the device reboots to flash (note that recovery does
the flashing [1], ubuntu-device-flash just pushes the updates to the
device)

Tried this - device booted into 'Contact Support, your Device is

just copy essential files and am done with it.

I've started to have the same problems with some sites but not others...

You’re most likely affected by https://launchpad.net/bugs/1656551.
This requires an oxide update, which we are preparing, and that will
go in OTA-15.

Great, thanks for that. Is there a silo I can install, rather than updating
to rc-proposed?

Yes, try
https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu/2376/+packages

Also, what's the current plan with ota-15, with regards to
release. Will this still be the vivid overlay, or using the new snap based
system?

It should be based on the vivid overlay, although I don’t know what
will go into the OTA (it might be a subset of what’s currently in the
overlay to cherry-pick selected bug fixes).
Thanks for that. Is there a current eta for the switch to snaps? I ask
because I have a number of apps in the store that need to be updated,
however depending on timeline I'm wondering if I'm better placed putting
my efforts into snaps.

To all the Ubuntu devs, particularly paid workers from Canonical & BQ
staff - am absolutely loving my M10 fhd tablet. Have ditched my laptop,

tablet, and contributing through making snaps for the store. Love the
concept of snaps, and the dual security nature - snaps in the store by
default with a 'restricted' profile - those same snaps installed through
the command-line can be easily unconfined.

Thanks again, and keep up all the great work!

[Ubuntu-phone] Ackkk! The world is ending!!!

2017-01-06 Thread Mitchell Reese
And people wonder why Canonical was silent? (apart from Christmas and New
Year break) EVERY tidbit of information here is picked up by social media,
'the press', and everyone else to extrapolate this project... How
tedious...

I run multiple theatre projects, community and professional, with various
funding partners. Not announceing before checking with them is common
courtesy. Sometimes that means keeping thnigs under my hat.

According to omg ubuntu - their click-bait headline points to the Ubuntu
Touch project dying. What a clusterfuck...

Awesome - can't wait to test it on my M10! Does this mean current phone
handsets aren't being planned to update to snaps? I.e. - will there be a
future image for the MX5pro, or will we need to wait until the next lot

Thanks for the clarity. Those few messages we have had stating the

Not "the official plan, from an official source" but here's two pieces
of information:-

An email from Thibaut Rouffineau - Canonical's "Head of Devices
Marketing - Phone & IoT" went out to developers who had uploaded a
click to the store. The mail went out on the 16th December 2016.
Here's the content:-

"Hi there,

Thanks for your incredible work with Ubuntu Phone! You are the
cornerstone of what makes Ubuntu a great place to work and play. I
just wanted to clue you in on what is next for Ubuntu and Canonical.

Earlier this year we launched snaps [0]. This is a new packaging
format, derived from clicks, that works anywhere, irrespective of
device, distro, or developer. Snaps are simple, secure, and universal.
We are making them the new standard format for apps in Ubuntu across
cloud, desktop, IOT, and beyond. As an example Rocket.chat, NextCloud,
Jenkins, VLC, and others now take minutes to deploy.

As a developer, snaps allow you to target multiple platforms, come
with a store, and a built-in mechanism for beta software distribution,
making it simpler for you to get feedback before you release major
versions. We have also built out extensive documentation and tooling
for making snaps dead simple to understand and use.

Now, while we plan on ultimately retiring click packages and the store
in preference for snaps, rest assured, it is not going to happen
immediately. We are though encouraging our awesome community members
such as yourself to start preparing to move to snaps so we can make
this transition smooth.

Now, we want to make this as quick and easy as possible. Here is how
you can get started:

STEP 1: Head to snapcraft.io [1] where you can learn more about snaps
and find tools, tutorials, and tips to get started.

STEP 2: If you have any questions about getting started, feel free to
post to Ask Ubuntu, use our IRC channel, or join
snapcr...@lists.snapcraft.io

Also, you might want to give snaps a go [2] on Raspberry Pi with
Ubuntu Core. It is a load of fun to play with and shows the potential.
There is even a competition [3] for the best seasonal snap you can
join if you need additional motivation!

If you have any questions, concerns, or otherwise, let us know, and
thanks so much for your incredible work!

Thanks!

At a recent Ubuntu event in Germany, there was a presentation [4] from
Jane Silber, the Canonical CEO. As part of the presentation there was
a short Q&A which was unfortunately not published online, but was
recorded. During the Q&A someone asked about further devices beyond
the ones that already shipped. Jane gave some detail about why the
rumoured/expected Meizu device never appeared, and talked a little
about future plans. I don't have a recording, and wouldn't want to
mis-quote my boss, so won't.

The short version being that the focus for us all right now is moving
everything to work in the new snap world, and merging all the existing
project code to one converged platform.

I myself asked about it very positively on December, 15th. So no 'when
most sensible working people are on holidays' kind of excuse
for the lack of

response.

Apologies for the delay in response. I was on vacation from

anymore, just for Xenial and Zesty. Updating to Xenial/Zesty from
Vivid is not possible via an OTA update, because the difference is
too big. so maybe a reflash could be a solution, but it wouldn't be
an ideal one. There's no phone, which can run a Xenial base system.
the QA testers use the tablet for every test. So I think Canonical is
thinking about the future of the phone platform and it forbade its
employees to talk about the future of the platform. So I think
there's a very big chance that they will kill the platform completely
(worst case scenerio) or they will start to sale new phones with
Xenial base and Snaps in the future, but not this year. And it would
mean the end of the support to all previous devices. I think this is
the reason why they didn't start to sale the Meizu MX6 phones as well...

Thanks guys, I have discovered the notes I made last time I had to flash
it thankfully. It's going through now. As for known good state these
sort of issues begin to crop up monthly. The OTA always kicked my phone
back into line.

I suggest OTA15 isn't happening because any attempt anyone has made to
ask when it is coming has been deflected. There is no mention of it on
launchpad and people just keep referring to big changes ahead and it
being pointless investing time in a system that is being retired
shortly.

If it is happening someone please provide a timescale or at least
confirmation. Not being given any information at all leads to great
frustration.

 From `man system-image-cli`:

Override the current build number just this once

...

   -m MAXIMAGE, --maximage MAXIMAGE
After the winning upgrade path is selected, remove all

You want "--build 0 --maximage 121"

Didn't work for me. Seems not possible to roll back updates with the
system-image-cli tool. As near as I can tell, this tool allows you to
force an upgrade to a certain version that's greater than the current

however worked:

ubuntu-device-flash touch --channel=ubuntu-touch/rc-proposed/ubuntu

This happens because in production devices adb is disabled.
Solution is that you need to provide recovery images together with
ubuntu-device-flash.
May be you need to give --bootstrap also.

Recovery image for particular M10 device can be downloaded from here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Devices
and then you can use full command with recovery image as (plz Adjust
command accoroding to device)
ubuntu-device-flash touch --channel ubuntu-touch/stable/bq-aquaris.en
--bootstrap --recovery-image ./recovery.img

[Ubuntu-phone] Unable to flash M10

2016-11-23 Thread Mitchell Reese
Hi, tried the Staging channel out of curiosity, and am now returning my
M10 back to re-proposed. Only now I'm unable to access adb through
enabling developer mode. Have rebooted to bootloader, and am trying to
reflash using fastboot. Everything seems to work, until the device boots
into the recovery, and my computer is no longer able to recognise it.
Just hangs at: "Waiting for device to enter recovery mode..."

Device is in recovery mode, but not recognised. Eventually the
ubuntu-device-flash tool times out. When I reboot my device I'm back
where I started.

How do I reflash back to rc-proposed?

Thanks,

Mitchell

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] DON'T upgrade Meizu Pro5 to latest RC!

2016-11-11 Thread Mitchell Reese
Probably would have - but just wiped and reinstalled from scratch
(sigh). Will setup ssh for future issues. On the up side, working
beautifully now...

For the record, I hadn't made the system RW - very minimal messing
around with this past install. Is it worth filing a bug? Not sure what
I'd put it under...

Happened to me too recently, although I think it was because I have a rw

The thing that rescued me in the end was to ssh in over wifi (not adb -
it would always drop the connection after a few seconds) and then use
system-image-cli to flash it again cleanly.

Hope this helps.

[Ubuntu-phone] Manual music scanning

2016-11-04 Thread Mitchell Reese
Is there a command to manually scan for music? I.e. - I have my music on
an ext4 partition, located on the external sdcard of my M10, which I
manually mount after boot. The system by default scans the
/home/phablet/Music folder on startup, then stops scanning after that.
I've been manually mounting my ext4 partition from the sdcard over the
/home/phablet/Music folder.

This works fine for Documents (i.e., have some 30gb of material mounted
under /home/phablet/Documents), but not so well for Music. Is there any
way for me to get my tablet to rescan for music?

Yep, I'm aware that the device "isn't supposed to work like that!",
however because of all the restrictions and difficulties of accessing
material from the sdcard, you have people like myself finding other options.

Cheers,

Mitchell

[Ubuntu-phone] Encryption

2016-11-04 Thread Mitchell Reese
HI, would like to get encryption happening on Ubuntu Personal. Am aware
that Iphone's have encryption by default, and that encryption is pretty
trivial to setup in Android - am also aware that setting up encryption
with ecryptfs on the Ubuntu Desktop system is an easy option at install.
What's the best way to go about this for Ubuntu Phones?

I.e. - I would like to use ecryptfs to encrypt everything under
/home/phablet, to be decrypted at login. I'm comfortable making my
device writable and potentially borking everything, and that an
'official' solution might be much further down the track. Any ideas? Thanks.

I meant try deleting them from the owncloud server, then re-adding them
there. Tedious, but it just might work... Just make sure you back up.

Good luck.

Same when I exported from my local evolution install.

So, it looks like maybe there is some data detail in one or more of
the
entries I have in the contact list that either Syncevolution or
Owncloud can't handle. Funny thing is then, that it doesn't all
fail,
but all but 13 of them...

My first thought was non-ASCII letters, but I tried adding a
contact
with norwegian letters to the test db and it worked fine.

On further inspection, OwnCloud claims that the requests that are
failing contain merely the URL string "http:" (see log file below).
But
if that's Syncevolution not parsing the list right or OC getting
confused about the request is hard to tell.

Is there a packet sniffer utility available for the phone, by any
chance, or do I have to chroot etc to get one?

Another peculiar thing is that it complains about missing auth
headers,
but it does that even in requests that succeed. I don't know if
that
can have something to do with it. Have pasted that log file entry

Thanks for that. Have tuned the mouse all the way up... better, but still
far from usable as a daily driver. Screen resolution is still pretty awful.
When compared to my Meerkat 76 over hdmi, it's a sloth. Perhaps not a fair
comparison, but that's the kind of functionality needed for a desktop

I have used it on my Samsung TV(not sure of the type right now) And I was

fast yet but not unworkable, although your standards may well be different

screen-related for some reason.
How is your performance with your external monitor when connected over

You are probably aware that you can tune mouse response to your needs in

404 errors in "MULTIGET" requests.

From the syncevolution changelog I get the impression that this MULTIGET
feature is of newer date. Since the sync still works on my Linux Mint
Evolution, I presume the change that broke the sync resides on the phone
and not the OwnCloud instance.

Any ideas?

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Canonical branded phone?

2016-09-11 Thread Mitchell Reese

Yep - here's a link on AskUbuntu:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/767323/how-to-install-ubuntu-on-meizu-pro-5-that-was-originally-with-android

And here's the documentation I followed, posted up as a thread on Google+

https://plus.google.com/u/0/103449842981186239877/posts/RBDbK82Lt83

Works beautifully! Still sorting out over the air updates, but a very
awesome Ubuntu Touch device. And it's black instead of White...

Good luck.

getting your hands on an MX5. I was just a week too late on

It wasn’t my intention to bash the project to death at all. I
do actually believe in the possibility of breaking into the
status quo. If the proposition is good enough. And I still
believe UT can be that. I recently did a live head-to-head on
comparison with a hp windows continuum phone. And Ubuntu won
on some major points hands down. Convergence is pretty awsum
already and the design is as good as any phone I have owned.

But i think Canonical can't afford to lose the base of users
it has now. So they need a reliable device coming from somewhere.

It is indeed a bitter pill to swallow, but unlike other open

Without supported hardware, it is pointless. Well, you could

producing any

The same situation has already led to the demise of MeeGo,

I suspect that the answer to that is "no".

If, as seems likely, both BQ and Meizu have no

that it is not
economically beneficial to them to do so. That
certainly isn't an
appealing market for other OEMs to join.
Canonical would likely be

pouring their money down the drain with such a device.

Mozilla went through a very similar journey with
Firefox OS, though with
way more devices and way more traction. They ended
up giving up on the
device side, and focusing on just community ports,
and on application of
the OS to new (non-mobile) markets.

Mobile is a tough, tough market to compete with.
Commodity Android
devices are very, very compelling to the mass
market. Mobile Linux is a
really niche. See the troubles Jolla have
experienced too. Even
Samsung are struggling to make any kind of impact
with Tizen - though that
likely has more to do with their own internal
politics than any lack of
resourcing or ability to sell large volumes.

My personal feeling is that mobile is now "mature",
and uninteresting, like
the PC market. Who really cares if you have an
ASUS or an Acer or a HP or
whatever. They have razor-thin markets and little
differentiation. I
think that is where mobile is getting to be, with
Android as the Windows,
and iOS as the Mac.So iOS is premium and
profitable, "because Apple",
but Android is the de-facto standard, commodity and
unprofitable. That
is a really unappealing place to try to build a
third platform.

Android has utterly skewed manufacturing too, to my
understanding, so that
if you want to get a SoC now, you are going to get
Android bootloaders and
drivers on it. As blobs. And you're just going
to have to suck that up.
   Want X11 drivers? No way.

Tizen is the only mobile Linux which hasn't just
made the pragmatic choice
of avoiding the issue by using Hybris. For
everybody else, Android has
become the de-facto HAL :-)

So yeah... I have an MX5 Pro as my daily driver and
love it. MX4 before
that. But I don't have much hope of any future
Ubuntu Touch mobile
devices.I think we're likely walking dead, but
just haven't stopped
walking yet.

So maybe Jolla and Tizen are the "last men standing"

Hmmm. Disagree - thanfully. Otherwise, whats the point? Similar arguments

The thing about Ubuntu is it's also a desktop system - and has the

The issue with shortened links is that they can present security and
privacy risks.

For example, for privacy: the t.co link would redirect to an
intermediary website which would log the full request, then redirect
to the final destination.

For security, it can redirect to an intermediary website that would
filter out important visitors (for example, those that connect from
certain companies), and deliver malicious payload.

If you want to check where a shortened URL points to, you would need
to open a terminal and type

$ curl -v https://t.co/B1exFdmB88
...
< HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently
< cache-control: private,max-age=300

< expires: Tue, 06 Sep 2016 13:37:30 GMT

...

So, no shortened URLs.

Simos

It's polite to give any kind of description on what to expect when
posting links. It's downright rude to use link shorteners with no
context.

The first link is a comment on YCombinator, discussing an
article. The second link is the article in question.

The article discusses in some detail the experience of developing
for Ubuntu phones using the SDK, and describes his problems with
the inadequate Ubuntu documentation. He also provides as many
solutions as he has been able to find:

http://zxstudio.org/blog/2016/04/06/experience-ubuntu-touch-development/

The post is overall positive, and he provides links to help
interested new developers find their footing.

The YCombinator comments don't seem to be related, and are just
sort of man-on-the-ground comments, although there only appears to
be one Ubuntu device user, and he isn't happy (but seems hopeful
for improvements):

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12433739

Worth taking a look at.

It sounds like things got fairly messed up when the update
failed. We suggest the safest and best way to recover is to

reflash your device using the desktop tools (see
https://developer.ubuntu.com/en/phone/devices/installing-ubuntu-for-devices

DO NOT use --wipe or --bootstrap and your data will be safe.

[Ubuntu-phone] No xapps?

2016-07-19 Thread Mitchell Reese
My xapps all seem to have disappeared... the Libertine scope is blank,
and when I tap on an icon in the main scope, (Firefox, Libreoffice)
nothing happens. Also, there is no longer an open dialogue in
Libreoffice for doc or odt files. What have I done wrong?

System is not writable.

Cheers,

Mitchell

[Ubuntu-phone] Dropbox webapp

2016-07-19 Thread Mitchell Reese
Am building a new dropbox webapp - none of the offerings in the store
meet my needs. Have a working app now that spoofs the chrome browser,
downloads and uploads files.

While I can choose any file from the File Manager to upload, I don't
have the same option through the content hub with downloads - currently
I'm only able to choose the Document Viewer. While this mostly works, I
want to be able to download and save any file to work with.

This is working fine in the browser - I'm presented with a dialogue
asking what I'd like to do - download the file or open with another
application. How do I get this same dialogue happening from a webapp?

Regards,Barry.

You can probably still use thunderbird, just a matter of where you put
the config folder. Thunderbird is running under a libertine container
called 'Puritine' as a legacy app, so you can try putting the directory
under: ~/.local/share/libertine-container/user-data/puritine/.thunderbird

Personally, I prefer Dekko - the UI for Thunderbird on the M10 is way to
small.

Good luck with it,

[Ubuntu-phone] M10 in Borneo...

2016-05-13 Thread Mitchell Reese
Hi folks, quick update on using this awesome tablet - am on the island of
Borneo (Kalimantan, Indonesia) with a theatre project deep in the heart of
the island. Have taken the M10 with me and am loving it. Not quite a
desktop replacement, but very close at this stage - most days I don't need
to open my laptop, and can do most of my work on this device. It's been
invaluable to have something I can easily transport to different areas,
take pictures (camera app), write notes (Notes App), Email, Telegram
contacts, check translations - highly useful. For those interested, here's
a link to our project blog: www.orang-utan.com.au/category/project-updates

I don't have much time for bug reports, but if it's useful, here's some
feedback:

1. Overall, awesome device!
2. Sync works beautifully with Syncthing, however have had to use an
unconfined version - currently not enough usability with the default system
not to have an unconfined sync app of some description (Owncloud,
SyncThing, etc.). Currently I'm syncing between a laptop, phone (Ubuntu),
and server.
3. Libreoffice on this is awesome! To get the most functionality however,
I've needed to bind mount folders where I keep our project data (on the
sdcard) - would be great in the future if there was an easier way to do
this
4. Calendar and contacts sync works great through Owncloud & syncevolution
- have not needed to make my device writable for this.
5. Looking forward to the lag being fixed in the gui, particularly when in
Desktop mode.

Thanks again people - am enjoying the ride, and looking forward where this
system goes next.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Libertine - user folders

2016-04-28 Thread Mitchell Reese

 wrote:

On 16-04-27 11:24 PM, Mitchell Reese wrote:
Hi - am loving using Libertine, and chroot filesystems - great
concept! Couple questions:

1. How do I edit which folders are shown to libertine apps?
I.e., both with the 'puritine' container, and my custom
'extra' container, I'm shown several folders in my home
directory, but not all. I.e., Downloads is missing, as well as
several custom folders. I'm aware I can bind-mount to folders
inside the chroot, but there seems to be the default

configuration somewhere that I'm missing.

There is no place to configure what gets mounted. It's
purposefully restricted for confinement reasons.

Figured this out. Folders can be added here:
.local/share/libertine-container/user-data/puritine

Of course, adding symlinms there won't work, and dragging files defeats the
purpose. Bind mounting however works. I have a symlink in my /home/phablet
directory called Storage that links to the sdcard. So after adding Storage
under the above directory:

mount -o bind /home/phablet/Storage
/home/phablet/.local/share/libertine-container/user-data/puritine/Storage

Puritine apps can now access the sdcard through the file selection within
the app. I suspect this will need to be rerun each boot, or run as a
script.

Cheers,

Mitchell

2. Gui for all Libertine apps is tiny!!! How do I edit the
default libertine font sizes?

Most desktop apps were designed for last century's hardware and
assume a display with 96 pixels per inch. Today's 4k
displays and pocket computer screens run at about 300 pixels
per inch or better. That means when you open up a legacy
application from last century on your phone or tablet screen,
it's going to be teeny tiny. We're working on trying to
upscale automatically, but (a) upscaling will look less than
satisfactory and won't be pixel-perfect and (2) there isn't

enough screen real estate to show everything when upscaled.

You'll find the legacy apps look OK on a large external monitor
with a traditional legacy pixel density.

The only good solution to this problem is to bring the apps
forward to 2016 and port them to run natively. That's up to

the app developers.

3. Libreoffice can't open documents from the content hub.
libreoffice come up as an option, but won't actually open
anything. I currently can only open docs from withi.
Libreoffice. Are there any workarounds for this?

This is, unfortunately, still on the backlog for tasks left to do.

Libertine uses the matchbox-window-manager, so instead of launching a
specific
programm i thought it would be cool to launch the matchbox-desktop

With the following steps you get a kind of desktop
http://radamanthys.de/public/screenshot20160428_171820149.png

from where you can start your programms
http://radamanthys.de/public/screenshot20160428_165342133.png

I created a desktop entry puritine_myxinit_0.0.desktop

$ cat /home/phablet/.local/share/applications/puritine_myxinit_0.0.desktop
[Desktop Entry]

X-Ubuntu-XMir-Enable=true

Then I created the applications dir inside the container

$ mkdir
/home/phablet/.local/share/libertine-container/user-data/puritine/.local/share/applications

and there the desktop entry myxinit.desktop

$ cat
/home/phablet/.local/share/libertine-container/user-data/puritine/.local/share/applications/myxinit.desktop

X-Desktop-File-Install-Version=0.22

And in the home directory of the container the script myxinit

$ cat

#!/bin/bash

sleep 1 # it's needed, dont know why

#matchbox-panel &

exec matchbox-desktop
#exec matchbox-session

$ chmod 775
/home/phablet/.local/share/libertine-container/user-data/puritine/myxinit

matchbox-session adds the matchbox-panel to the gui, which is more or
less useless

Libertine launches matchbox-window-manager with no titlebar. With the
titlebar on the other hand you get a small button to switch between
running apllications.

If you've done the previous steps not in puritine but in yourcontainer,
you can do

$ cd /home/phablet/.cache/libertine-container/yourcontainer/rootfs/usr/bin

There is no place to configure what gets mounted. It's
purposefully restricted for confinement reasons.

Ah, confinement my old friend... how many ways do you frustrste me?

While I appreciate the idea behind this concept, currently it is far less
useful than it could be. In Australia our government is a 'nanny state' -
protecting us from self-harm. I'd prefer that my computing devices didn't
do the same thing.

How do I hack confinement so that I can edit which folders get mounted in
libertine? (heh... liberty?) I'm a big fan of the open store for this
reason - Id rather be the one to tell my tablet to behave...

Thanks for your other responses.

[Ubuntu-phone] Ext3/4 & Encryption with the sdcard

2016-04-25 Thread Mitchell Reese
Hi folks - firstly, am loving using the M10. Am using it for work in place
of my laptop for many scenarios - useful and fun little device.

Currently I have syncing setup using Neil's open syncthing app:
https://github.com/mcphail/ut_syncthing_open
Works great. With a 64gb sdcard, I'm able to sync most of my documents. I'm
aware how easy it would be for someone to get access to them however - pop
out the sdcard and my info is yours. This is an issue for travelling -
Sunday I'm off to a remote part of Indonesia for 6 weeks to run a theatre
project. HIghly useful having the tablet most of the time instead of my
laptop - less interested in all my data being read should the tablet (or
sdcard) go missing.

So - what's involved with formatting the sdcard to ext3 or ext4, and
mounting it as a drive each time the tablet boots? Is it as simple as
editing /etc/fstab, or more complex than that? An ideal setup would be
something like ecryptfs setup for the tablet's sdcard. Happy to experiment
and report back if someone can point me in the right direction.

Cheers,

Mitchell

Anything that has the Bluetooth logo on it should work. If
it doesn't,
it's probably a bug. Please report it to Launchpad. Some
mice which have

a special "window-switching" button pretend to be fully fledged
keyboards and currently confuse the system a bit, tricking it into
thinking a keyboard would be connected and hiding the OSK
(In case you
would want to work with a mouse but no physical keyboard).
We're working

on finding a solution there.

You can also use a micro USB to USB-A adapter and plug USB
mice/keyboards in. Again anything that has the USB logo on it should
work.

Currently there is a known bug about the AltGr key handling for some
languages. Also, some special keys on keyboards might not
be supported
yet. Please report bugs in case you'll have such special
keys and they

are not behaving as expected.

 Subject: [Ubuntu-phone] M10 Tablet - First Impressions

Hi people, thought I'd post up a few initial impressions with the FHD M10
tablet. Have had it for a couple days now and been putting it through it's
paces. All up - great job! Awesome hardware, and the system is lots of fun
to use.

Firstly, I'm typing this in desktop mode paired top a Logitech
keyboard and
hp bluetooth mouse. Keyboard works flawlessly, mouse works best
when one or
two apps are open. More causes it to stutter.

Have tried an external display a couple times - works great both with a
projector and smaller tv monitor.

Overall the tablet works well, and is shaping up to be a great experience.
Here are a few bugs I found so far - feel free to let me know the best
place to report them and I'll post them up.

1. Mouse gets very laggy when more than a couple apps are open - very hard
to scroll, let alone move it anywhere. Is this hardware related (i.e., not
enough power yet), or OS (i.e., still being optimised)?
2. Switching between apps in desktop mode is very slow - worse with a
mouse, however still slow with touch if more than a couple apps are open.
Again - is this hardware or OS related?
3. Bug in initial download of the updated 10.1 ota - couldn't
do it until I
changed the timezone to manually with my location.
4. Love the sidestage, however took me time to work out that I needed to
tap with three fingers on the screen to dismiss it. Very slick now, but
without saying this somewhere, it's difficult to figure out. Would be best
on the instructions on the side stage when no app is there to say this, or
at the very least the first time it's run.
5. In general, the system still has a fair bit of lag - noticeable when
switching scopes, and watching videos while streaming (youtube,
etc.) Again
- OS or software related?
6. X11 apps are confusing. The gui is different (ouch! So
small!!), and
on screen keyboard doesn't work with them. Imho, I think there should be a
seperate 'legacy apps' scope. Bundling them together with other apps that
work great (Dekko, Unav, etc.) gives the impression they should also work
as well. They don't.
7. Libreoffice is usable with a keyboard and mouse, but the font for all
the settings is miniscule. This makes it painful to read. Would
be great if
there was some way to manually change this.
8. GPS doesn't work with the tablet - the daemon seems to continually be
restarting, making it unusable. The only option has been to disable it
entirely. Have filed a bug for this.

All up though, a great experience. There's no way in it's
current form this
table t can serve as a desktop - even my aging ultrabook - replacement.
That said, working within it's current limitations, I've only opened my
lapt

even have to contact my boss through whats app, send pictures
etc. I think only this two apps would bring Ubuntu phone and
tablet many thousands or millions users. As far as now we are
only crazy geeks ;-) who don't follow the mainstream :-)))

That said, working within it's current limitations, I've only opened my
laptop a couple times since having it. Great job people - I'm looking
forward to seeing where this goes.

Thats encouraging to hear! Playing about with libertine - how did you get
nautilus and the sdk installed? Did you create a seperate container, use
puritane, or install with apt-get?

Just an input from a Nexus 7 user.#1 must be a bug. That tablet
has way more powerful hardware than Nexus 7 and I don't
encounter too much lag when multiple apps are open. Yeah some
stutters and slow down happens but not really noticeable. I
actually tested convergence yesterday and Xmir is now working
decently on it and got Firefox, Nautilus and Ubuntu SDK running
simultaneously without much lag though I don't interacted with
them that much.

Yes. The command is 'phablet-config welcome-wizard --enable'. You
run it directly on the device.

Yes, 'phablet-config welcome-wizard --enable' will rerun the welcome
experience wizard.
