[Ubuntu-phone] free and open source OS and personal computing
Hi everyone, After the news that Canonical is abandoning unity the following became clear to me. Free and open source OS on personal computing devices will never became a success. If it is sponsored by a company then there isn't any known way for the company to make profit and if is sponsored by community no OEM will care. Only technical users and nerds benefit from free and open source OS. The free and open source OSes that seems profitable is Android and Chrome OS because Google sells our data to god knows who. Will this still be the vivid overlay, or using the new snap based system? It should be based on the vivid overlay, although I don’t know what will go into the OTA (it might be a subset of what’s currently in the overlay to cherry-pick selected bug fixes). Thanks for that. Is there a current eta for the switch to snaps? Updating to Xenial/Zesty from Vivid is not possible via an OTA update, because the difference is too big. so maybe a reflash could be a solution, but it wouldn't be an ideal one. There's no phone, which can run a Xenial base system. the QA testers use the tablet for every test. So I think Canonical is thinking about the future of the phone platform and it forbade its employees to talk about the future of the platform. So I think there's a very big chance that they will kill the platform completely (worst case scenerio) or they will start to sale new phones with Xenial base and Snaps in the future, but not this year. And it would mean the end of the support to all previous devices. I think this is the reason why they didn't start to sale the Meizu MX6 phones as well... Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Canonical branded phone?
Hi Since this thread went to all directions I would like to express my opinion as well. I think a Canonical branded phone would never happen. Canonical is a software company. I don't think UT is dead either. It is because ubuntu phones are repurposed android phones so OEMs don't need to invest a lot. They have some devices left in stock the can just sell them as ubuntu phones. I aslo believe is the Canonical who don't want new devices until the UT moves to snappy and to 16 series. This transition is not simply (it needs systemd, newer kernel). So until there are devices with the required kernel Canonical is working on their part of the transition. -- Sent using Dekko from my Ubuntu device -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone Post to : ubuntu-phone@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-phone More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] [Design] : Color changes in OTA 10
I also feel the blue doesn't fit with ubuntu. Maybe I am used to orange after using ubuntu for years. Still it feels like it doesn't blend well with the other colors especially orange and purple On Δευτέρα, 11 Απριλίου 2016 11:42:16 Μ.Μ. EEST, Peter Bittner wrote: After some days with OTA-10 I must admit I have a hard time accepting light-blue is the new orange. When the security bugfix release was installed today my phone rebooted and there it was again, the good old Ubuntu splash screen in violet shades and an orange progress bar, and later orange progress dots. That was a relief. For a few moments. Really, the light blue doesn't fit. It doesn't fit with the brown / violet theme of Ubuntu in general. It's an awkward color, cold and without life. Sorry to say, but pretty much the opposite of "Ubuntu, humanity to others". (Some may not agree, but I feel it's worth defending a Status Quo that was "working perfect".) I really waited for quite some time before expressing an opinion about the color. I thought I may get used to used to it or "give it a chance", but I think it's also fair to say the "truth" (as in "true feelings"). I don't want to hurt anyone, but a feedback should go to you guys and ladies. Look at the color palette on [1]: The light-blue is the one the strikes out as totally off-topic, followed (at some remarkable distance already) by green and even solid-red. It's about feeling harmony. No, that's not working out. That's not the beauty that the press was always appraising about Ubuntu Touch (which I felt almost exaggerated, but obviously it's a value worth conserving). This color palette must be revised. Sorry for the rough speech. Please go over it again, discuss it. Please! Thank you for your understanding, Peter 2016-04-07 12:25 GMT+02:00 Rae Shambrook : Hi, This is Rae from the design team. I understand the new palette may take some getting used to. But what we've tried to do is create a colour palette that works in a smarter way and is more robust. If you haven't seen it already, here is a breakdown of how the new palette works: https://developer.ubuntu.com/en/apps/qml/tutorials/ubuntu-ui-toolkit-palette/ As for your concerns about components being blue rather than orange, the reason why we have removed a lot of orange from the UI is that we now want it to be a focus state and blue is meant to be the selected/active state. Before we had orange doing both these functions and each colour should have it's own meaning. And we feel the blue works better for the selected/active state as it feels more intuitive as a colour representing activity, while orange could sometimes be confusing as what it's supposed to represent. So basically, we've tried to make all our colours semantic. While orange is still our brand colour, we want to use it in a more concise way, while other colours take on more meaning in the UI, and hopefully, this will make it a lot more intuitive for the user. Maybe you want to reconsider changing the color scheme. Other than that, I am pretty impressed (My Android phone broke on Upgrade to V6). I also thought that other phones load dialler faster because they don't actually close it in the first place. I am not a coder, but adding option to white-list apps (so everyone can choose set of favourite apps to white-list) seems like a good idea. It looks similar to scopes - you select scopes that you always want accessible. On top of that - app developers could make some special "white-list compatibility mode" that keep certain qualities of apps readily available while muting others - less important. The function should be optional for sure. Yes as default setting would be good for general public. Also when you set it as "yes" you should be allowed to choose the app to be "invisible" in apps preview (to avoid clutter), so when I want to kill browser I don't have to scroll through dialler, texts, scopes, music and contacts before I get to browser. Or at least keep those "yes" apps at the end of the queue. Or swipe from the right edge twice to get a chance to close those "yes" apps (quite intuitive because the first swipe would open normal apps, and the second swipe from same edge would let you edit "privileged" apps). It's nice to see other people interested in the topic - thank you for all the comments, Chris The real problem here is apps not loading fast enough. What you are suggesting (and i did) is a workaround but from what i understood from Oliver it causes other problems. Hello everyone I've tried to sent a file through bluetooth to an android device but i didn't find a way to do it. Am i missing something? Is it a known bug or should i report it? If yes against which component?
