[Ubuntu-phone] Thank you

2017-04-10 Thread Pat McGowan
Dear contributors and enthusiasts

On behalf of the entire team that worked on Ubuntu Touch, Unity8, Mir, the
apps, the services, the hw enablement, the QA, the releases, the CI
infrastructure... thanks for your commitment, patience and the many kind
words for the developers and the products.

Working on this great software was a very rewarding experience made more so
by your involvement.
I share the hope that it lives on.

So long for now
Pat

PS As far as I know this list will remain open.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] With OTA-15 it continues the reset

2017-02-16 Thread Pat McGowan
I would suggest entering a bug for this in launchpad so we can collect more
information from those who are affected. Its not generally reproducible,
and as OTA15 updated just the browser app and oxide, not sure how it is
linked. It would be interesting to know which apps are in use, especially
if the browser with a lot of tabs or webapps are open. Although note that
even though a number of apps are "open" the system does suspend the apps
in the background and return the memory.

As a last resort you could use ubuntu-device-flash to reflash the phone,
and try it without wiping data.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Snap Images

2017-01-27 Thread Pat McGowan
The current test image is still deb based and meant for enabling the
hardware with arm64 and systemd on xenial. Its not recommended and in fact
is really an interim step only.

Snaps will not run there or on the prior images, as snapd cannot be
supported there, at least not easily. We are sill working toward enabling a
snap core based image.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Can't access web resources/images from device

2017-01-18 Thread Pat McGowan
I think it would be a good idea to update your current apps in the store,
as that will make them available for all current users in the near term.

and yes OTA 15 will be focused on the browser and oxide updates and we will
get it out as soon as possible.

You’re most likely affected by https://launchpad.net/bugs/1656551.
This requires an oxide update, which we are preparing, and that will
 go in OTA-15.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Switching to rc channel and back again

2017-01-13 Thread Pat McGowan
Mark

This could be the stale lock bug (again) https://bugs.launchpad.net/
bugs/1576989
See if you have a file at /home/phablet/.config/com.ubuntu.dialer-app/*.lock
and remove it.
The other possibility is a corrupt qml cache, in which case rm -r
/home/phablet/.cache/QML/Apps/dialer-app/

The rc channel is not recommended, its just for final release staging. The
rc-proposed channel would have any potential fixes however there are none
related to your issue.
Hopefully one of the above will do it.

It sounds like the mediascanner service is not working properly. Please
report a bug at

include the logs from /home/phablet/.cache/upstart/mediascanner-2.0.log.*
Could also

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] [OTA14] App permission issue

2017-01-10 Thread Pat McGowan
There are several sqlite3 trust databases you can find with
find /home/phablet -name trust.db
You can manually modify them or remove them. I would first stop any related
services:
initctl list | grep trust
for example
stop pulseaudio-trust-stored
rm ./.local/share/PulseAudio/trust.db
start pulseaudio-trust-stored

although I am unsure that this will fix your issue. If not you can file a
bug with the relevant logs.

[Ubuntu-phone] The move to snaps

2017-01-05 Thread Pat McGowan
Hi folks

You are a very insightful group indeed, let me add a few details to the
questions in the other thread.

>
>>
>> * Click is dead, and everything must be migrated to snap.
>>

Ultimately yes, for now the store is still open and accepting new click
packages. At some point we will no longer accept new clicks, and then at
some further point (all tbd) the store will only serve snaps.

>
>> * There won't be new phone models until there's a 'snap image'.

This is mostly the case. We do not plan to land any features to the current
stable PPA, although we will provide security updates as they are available
for example for the webrowser/oxide.

>
>> So how can we help to speed up the transition to snap? Any estimated
>> timeline? Any roadmap?
>>
>
There are new milestones defined on https://launchpad.net/canonica
l-devices-system-image, you can see the main focus is now on Xenial (which
is the basis for Ubuntu Core 16 that we will use), and there are milestones
assigned to Ubuntu Personal images which also encompasses the work for the
Unity8 session on classic Ubuntu.

How you can help is an excellent question, we certainly want to transition
the click apps to snaps hence the earlier message to app developers. We
will have more stable *test* images soon (for amd64 VMs and PC, and arm64
M10, we also have "kiosk" images for dragonboard and R-Pi in progress)
which should allow us to pick up the pace of the transition. There is also
the Unity8 session on classic desktop available now but it also needs to
stabilize.

In short visit snapcraft.io, and start using and creating snaps in the
standard desktop and in the Unity8 session and provide all the feedback you
can.

>
> * Unity 8 development is primarily focused on Desktop features currently,

That's a fair statement. While we transition to snap this is the other
major area of focus. I would add the Unity8 desktop needs parity with the
current Unity7 desktop as we are also still planning to use Unity8 as the
default shell in Ubuntu.

Thanks all for your patience

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Improve apps startup time by using Qt Quick Compiler

2016-11-22 Thread Pat McGowan
Some time ago we did an benchmark of compiled apps vs the QML caching we
currently use and found little difference in startup performance. Qt is
working on an improved version 2 of the compiler but as far as I know it is
scheduled for release with 5.8 or 5.9.

To be clear the first time an app is run we create a cache for the QML and
javascript elements so they are not interpreted on subsequent runs. This
saves at least 50% on most apps. We have also been tuning the code for our
own apps to improve startup times as poor design is generally the biggest
contributor to slowness.

We also looked into using an app launching daemon type of approach to
preload some of the runtime, but this is quite difficult given our strict
app confinement model and requires changes to apparmor. We also found it
did not result in significant savings.

As for QtQuick controls 2, the sdk team is migrating our toolkit toward a
common set of components and working with upstream on this.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Unable to connect to new wifi networks

2016-08-23 Thread Pat McGowan
This is likely due to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1588126

A workaround

Currently the only workaround for this is to manually update the system
connection file for the AP with the psk and restart the device. It then
should be possible to tap the access point in the WiFi list, and as long as
the passphrase is correct in the connection file, NM should reconnect to
the network automatically when available. You can accomplish this by
stopping NM on the device and editing the connection file directly, or
copying the connection file from the device, editing, and pushing it back (
via adb ). System connection files are found in the directory
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Switching into desktop mode

2016-08-13 Thread Pat McGowan
The latest logic switches to Windowed mode when a mouse or touchpad is
available (not based on having an external monitor), so your Nexus 4 should
switch because its acting as the pointer. However it also checks that the
width of the screen is at least 60 grid units, which in this case is only
1080 pixels. I believe there is similar logic to decide whether to display
the Desktop mode toggle in the session indicator based on screen width.

It is working properly for me but you can file a bug at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity8, perhaps the screen
resolution isn't being detected properly since you get neither windows or
the toggle. Try with another screen if you can.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Project Dashboard App disappeared

2016-08-12 Thread Pat McGowan
I hesitate to suggest this, but what the heck.

In this case the developer used a -dev framework and never updated to the
supported release version.

Look for its manifest at /opt/click.ubuntu.com/"name of the dashboard
app"/current/.click/info/*.manifest You can modify the manifest file for
this app to remove the "-dev" from the framework and it will reappear after
a reboot.

I submitted a bug but the app has not been updated in some time. Maybe
someone can pick up support for it.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Mass storage

2016-08-04 Thread Pat McGowan
The partition can't be mounted on the device when the PC is using it so it
always required a separate partition. Depending on what you want to do,
perhaps the internal SD card could be exposed this way at least.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] E4.5 bricked, won't boot

2016-08-02 Thread Pat McGowan
Not sure this will work since a long time since I had any of these type
issues. On the chance it really is very low on battery, long press (like
more than 20 secs) to see if you can get the phone to really power off.
Plug it into the ac charger provided with the phone and let it charge for a
couple hours. then try to boot it.

Failing that if you use ubuntu desktop the instructions here can be used to
reflash the device
https://developer.ubuntu.com/en/phone/devices/installing-ubuntu-for-devices/
and download the recovery.img for your device from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Devices

For example, go into recovery and do

ubuntu-device-flash touch --channel=ubuntu-touch/stable/bq-aquaris.en
--bootstrap
--recovery-image recovery-krillin.img

This will of course wipe all your user data

Good luck

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Ghost app in location page after OTA-12

2016-07-28 Thread Pat McGowan
Yes it is this bug, due to uninstalling an app with permissions. It is not
new with OTA12 fwiw.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-system-settings/+bug/1389775

The records are in a sqlite db at
/home/phablet/.local/share/UbuntuLocationService/trust.db so it is possible
to manually remove the records for apps that were uninstalled but otherwise
this is benign and can be ignored. We will attempt to correct existing dbs
with the fix above.

Did you download the recovery image from
http://people.canonical.com/~jhm/barajas/recovery-krillin.img ?
I know that error happens when it can't find the .img file otherwise what
you are doing should work.

When it is stuck on the ubuntu screen can you see the device from the PC
with adb devices or shell into it?

Assuming you want to tether to the M10, it is not yet supported in the UI
but there are a couple ways as described at
http://askubuntu.com/questions/616245/tether-ubuntu-bq-phone.

If you instead want to use a dongle to Ethernet, that should work but there
are devices that do not as described at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1587305

The implementation is complete but it did not yet pass all test cases, we
are specifically taking extra care with upgrades of existing device
databases. The change effects five components.
The good news is it is in a landing silo and is expected to be committed
soon after the freeze is lifted. Thanks for your patience, we know this is
one of the top requested enhancements.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Two bugs regarding screen/touch

2016-06-14 Thread Pat McGowan
I use the MX4 and do not have any trouble with the edge gestures, although
some have suggested tuning the pixel count
>From the video I see in one case you are swiping an area with no gesture
defined (the center of the panel under recent calls).

For the first bug we do not support double tap to wake so something else is
happening to wake the phone. We made a number of recet fixes to reduce the
possibility of various events turning on the screen. Ironically there are
several requests to enable double tap to wake.

There is a bug you may be hitting where the hardware home button stays
active and touching it turns on the screen if the phone has not yet
suspended.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] OTA 11 doesn't appear to install (probably)

2016-06-02 Thread Pat McGowan
Its the system partition at
/dev/mmcblk0p6 2.0G 2.0G 0 100% /

I do not think there is any way to re-partition these
You will need to flash it over usb, assuming you have an E4.5 and want
stable

ubuntu-device-flash touch --channel ubuntu-touch/stable/bq-aquaris.en

should do it. It will also remove any extra packages you had installed via
apt, but that would have happened with the system update as well.
It will not remove your user data.

I assume its just related to the volume of logging per
https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1564618
and the roll check only happens once in a while. My log is currently over
200MB with proper ownership.

It is by design which is why the other interfaces to unlock exist. The bug

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] on the emulator

2016-05-13 Thread Pat McGowan
The emulator from the stable channel is version 10.1 which has 15.04.4. The
emulator from proposed will have 15.04.5.

It is not necessary to specify the most recent framework version, although
I understand for new projects this is presented as the default. Unless you
require a new api its best to select an earlier version that meets your
needs (I know, you are asking but how do I know, we are working to improve
that)

You should not be able to see these in the store, in fact I don't even
think the store should accept 15.04.5 yet. Lets look into that.

Cheers

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Emulator image

2016-05-11 Thread Pat McGowan
I just ran into some issues using it from the IDE so maybe best to do
command line. To create it in the IDE choose custom and
specify ubuntu-touch/stable/ubuntu.

sudo ubuntu-emulator create --channel ubuntu-touch/stable/ubuntu
stable-test
ubuntu-emulator run stable-test

This will work on Xenial. On an earlier release (I have Wily here) you need
the latest emulator-runtime which can be found at
https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu/stable-phone-overlay/+files/ubuntu-emulator-runtime_20160330-0939-0ubuntu1~overlay1_i386.deb

Will get this more sorted out tomorrow.

I updated gallery on E4.5, MX4 and the M10 and I got the symptom on the m10

reboot fixed it, the click-hook must have run properly at that time.

It should automatically go into desktop mode when the monitor is connected.
There is a toggle on the system indicator to change modes.

It has indeed grown into a life of its own. It is meant to be an escalation
point for the issues we want to ensure get addressed in a certain
timeframe,a s well as providing history what has been resolved. It never
represents 100% of what gets done.

> If we are reporting bugs against specific bits of the phone should we

Adding them to the specific project or package is preferable. That way
duplicates and lower priority issues can get triaged away, and higher
priority issues resolved directly.
If folks do not know what package or project to file against, then this
list can be used and someone will redirect it to the correct place. Its
also useful to see if your highest priority issues have been reported and
perhaps turn up the heat with this affects me.

Some folks who had installed packages after making the system writable had
issues with the system partition filling up. Check

/android/cache/recovery/last_log should tell us more.

To: Filip Dorosz

No, the move to Xenial will not include a transition to Snappy, this is a
longer term work effort which we are also actively planning. We are working
with the snappy team on issues unique to ubuntu-personal (which will be the
basis for the phone) which are a superset of the problem space compared to
ubuntu-core.

As Lukasz mentioned going to Xenial requires us to have a well thought
through migration path for apps/scopes and we will communicate much more on
this and work with developers as the plans get finalized.

When you say you tried several times, do you keep seeing the update

What is the output of
adb shell system-image-cli --info

sudo system-image-cli -n

There is no good way to do this today and I sympathize. Would some sort of
magnifier/zoom and pan capability satisfy this? We can look into it.
The browser dos support zooming of course which is quite handy.

Sorry to hear you are all experiencing such instability. Does this bug
describe the behavior you are seeing?
https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1532607

If so please attach whatever info you can to help debug. If its not the
same please enter a new bug or point me to an existing bug report.
Perhaps there is something similar in how you use your phones that triggers
this, like long usage of a single app.

Thanks

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Can I check if GPS is disabled for an app?

2016-02-05 Thread Pat McGowan
GPS is never completely disabled, in fact we will remove that toggle in
settings entirely as its misleading. GPS is enabled and disabled as
required. The user can control whether location detection is enabled or
not, and whether to use the AGPS services from Here.

I cannot think of any reason why the update would impact uNav other than
perhaps a regression in location service itself.

This was a result of webbrowser-app removing a direct dependency on
qml-module-qtquick-dialogs and it was not otherwise seeded. What I am

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Upgrading OTA-9 manually via local server

2016-01-29 Thread Pat McGowan
Do you see the files download from your mirror?
Do you have developer mode enabled and hone unlocked, and can you see the
device with "adb devices"
What type of device is it? the MX4 has had issues with usb connections.

Having said that, you should see the update. Do you have Wifi enabled?
What does "sudo system-image-cli -n -v" run on the phone tell you?

Its in the store for some time so you probably already have it, v140
I am not sure why the OTA 9 update triggered the larger font as this was a
result of something in the OTA 8 timeframe.
Check your settings for font size in the terminal app.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] BQ E4.5 small issues with OTA-9

2016-01-28 Thread Pat McGowan
A new version of the app was released to the store that fixes this per
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-terminal-app/+bug/1514519. This fixed
the default and provided a wider range of selections for font size.
The font size can be adjusted in the app settings.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Remote control phone?

2016-01-26 Thread Pat McGowan
You can run system-image-cli on the phone to get the update, with adb shell
or phablet-shell connection. You could also just use ubuntu-device-flash on
the stable channel once OTA 9 is released.

I can't confirm your smart watch working, I know there is a community
effort to enable the Pebble.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] "other files" growing over 4BiBs

2016-01-23 Thread Pat McGowan
Please note this outstanding bug about the Other files size reported being
much larger than it really is.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1524424
And this bug where we do not always assign all of an apps data to that app
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/145

Net result is Other should not be significant when these are fixed.

Easiest way s to reflash with the stable channel
ubuntu-device-flash touch --channel ubuntu-touch/stable/bq-aquaris.en

If you do that now you will get the update when its published, or you can
do it after its published and it will flash it directly
This will not change any of your data just the image

HI

I reproduced this and entered a bug at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-system-settings/+bug/1528886
It does clear up for me by enabling wifi and/or rebooting but I suspect
this is the issue you are seeing.

Please comment in the bug if you have other symptoms

While we could use it we have done a comparison of the compiler to what we
currently do with our dynamic QML caching and its not an improvement.
We do have some some things in progress to improve app launching time so
stay tuned.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Meizu MX4 (OTA8) - Strange sound from speaker after a ring tone notification

2015-12-16 Thread Pat McGowan
This has been reported at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/telephony-service/+bug/1477838

It seems to be worse for some people and not noticeable for others

2015-12-15 Thread Pat McGowan
Thanks for these reports. To test a theory can you check whether you have
any media-hub crash reports in /var/crash (assuming you have reporting
enabled in privacy settings)

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] stuck on bq splash logo after installing 201

2015-12-11 Thread Pat McGowan
There is an apparmor update that is likely causing the delay in the first
boot as it redoes the caches.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Any known issues with Wifi on Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition?

2015-12-01 Thread Pat McGowan
There is no reported issue matching your description. I would suggest
opening a bug at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+filebug
attach the file /var/log/syslog after it fails to connect and a description
of the Wifi AP setup, model, security, etc
Also has this been tried against multiple access points?
