 It isn't just you.
The Twitter app hasn't worked properly (or been updated)

for over a year. It seems to have at least
 partially and accidentally
 started working
again after a recent browser update. But sadly that
 didn't
 fix the notifications which are
 gone for good.

 There is an
alternative Twitter app, but that doesn't get
 notifications
 either, but it does work
 better.

[Ubuntu-phone] OTA-15 Web Browser Improvements - Thanks

2017-02-13 Thread Phil
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the work on the browser that came
in with OTA-15. The Twitter mobile site now works fully again and my little
web-apps that take me directly into my Twitter lists now work again (previously
they were blocked by Twitter, I'm guessing due to the browser not supporting
certain funtionality). A small thing, in the grand scheme of things, but
something I use a lot and so it's very useful to me.

Cheers

Phil

For me, OTA13 has finally fixed the
HFT pairing issues I was having.

There are still issues with audio routing, but I'm sure
 we'll get to
those in due time (hopefully soon, so I can use the phone
 while driving

 Hi,

I have Raspberry Pi and I would like to access it using my
 Ubuntu phone (Aquaris 4.5)

On Android I am using VX ConnectBot (that gives me console
like experience) and bVNC Free (that is more like accessing
 virtual desktop of my Raspberry)

I was looking in ubuntu app store for "SSH" and
"VNC" keywords, but nothing shows up.

For the SSH, open up the terminal app (you'll need to enter your lock code)
then you can use the ssh command, the basic form is
ssh user@servername-or-ip
If you search for SSH guides you can find more information on all the
command-line switches etc, along with generating keys, if you want. Or I'm
sure there are a couple of articles available free, CC-By-SA on the LV
site/archives:-
https://www.linuxvoice.com/creative-commons-issues/
http://lvarchivum.com/

As for the VNC, sorry, don't knw about that.

When I googled - all I found were ways to access Ubuntu
Touch from PC which is kind of opposite.

Any suggestions? I have a feeling that there is something in
app store, but somehow I cannot find it.

On my Raspberry I hav Tightvncserver installed, but I am
 open for anything.

 Thank you,

 Chris

[Ubuntu-phone] Adding New Keyboard Layouts

2016-08-19 Thread Phil
Is there any movement on the much long ago mentioned "layout generation tool"
(mentioned here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KeyboardLayouts )?

Assuming not, how can I test a new layout I make on my phone - do I need to
make it writeable and then copy the files into
/usr/share/maliit/plugins/com/ubuntu/lib/ (plus other places, I'm guessing - I
need to have a look at the referenced Catalan merge request)? I was thinking
of making an EN-GB coding keyboard, with easy access to characters like |, <,
>, etc from the alphanumeric layout - in this case what should I call the
layout as I notice that the keyboard selection area in the settings referenced
them by two letter country codes, and obviously this won't have one of them?

Cheers

 Hello everyone!

Some bad news today regarding OTA-12: unexpectedly we will
 have to
delay the release by one week again. Due to some internal
 reasons the
final testing still needs one week to finish, meaning an
 official
release next week on Wednesday (27th). All pieces are in
 place and
almost ready for release but sadly we cannot until this one
 more
formal step is finished. Apologies about the short notice -
 I just
 learned about it recently myself.
But no worries, it will come as soon as possible. We will
 keep
 everyone up-to-date.

In the meantime our OTA-13 landings continue. Today we only
 had two
 landings: a cross-build fix for ubuntu-ui-extras and a new
 address-book-app fixing screen-rotation breaking sim-contact
 imports.

As for our plans for OTA-13. Currently we are aiming at a
 few new
features, a couple of which have been already mentioned
 here. First
bigger change in the next update is the introduction of the
 new power
management daemon implementation - repowerd. The other plans
 are:
multiple google calendar sync, WAPI support and Android 6.0
 BSP
support (already landed in rc-proposed). Of course, this can
 change
and it's usually best to just track our bug milestone for
 this OTA:

 Hi all,

With the release of OTA-12 just around the corner, here is a
 list of
the most significant changes in the browser app since
 OTA-11:

  - Consistent page headers across the UI, making use of UITK
 Page and PageHeader
  - Display the currently hovered hyperlink’s target URL in
 an overlay
  - Only load the current tab when the session is restored
  - Touch selection improvements
  - Dynamic chromium version number in default user-agent
 string
  - New keyboard shortcuts for persistent per-domain zoom
 factor
  - Optimized new tab view loading time
  - Updated user-agent overrides for youtube and gmail
  - Set the front camera as the default for video media
 requests

And a number of bug fixes.
Anyone interested in details, have a look at the bzr history
 for
 lp:webbrowser-app, revisions 1454 to 1493.

 Happy web browsing!

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] An android confession

2016-06-29 Thread Phil
(IIRC) I used to have Waze installed on my tablet, then an update came in with
a bunch of additional permission requirements and when I'd finished laughing
hysterically at the harvester pods it wanted to unleash on my data, I
uninstalled it. That's how it's funded.

 Waze on Android on the
otherhand has has a makeover and is looking fantastic. It
knew where I was right away with no delay whatsoever,
plotted the route in a flash and all the things I need to be
paying attention to such as speed cameras are nicely
highlighted on screen. It now even tells you how long a
traffic jam is and how far through it you are. It handles
getting disconnected from the internet seamlessly and all
you have to worry about is the driving.

I would be intrigued to know how this free app is funded.
I'm a firm believer though that anything that can be
done, can be done better open source. This certainly sets
the bar. Does anyone know if there are any outstanding gps
issues either with touch or with unav itself right
 now?

Waze was bought by Google for $1.3 billion.
They crowdsource the traffic data, and it works quite well
because they have so many users.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] A very open thank you.

2016-06-14 Thread Phil
I don't think Facebook would be interested in people's money (directly) - I
think they'd be much more interested in a constant advertising stream and
access to your data. Though in UT this is nicely sandboxed, so they'd only get
what data you used via the app, rather than having carte-blanche to everything
that's set up in the security permissions, as happens with iOS and Android (so
I think this would be a _lot_ less attractive to them).

 Why don't we start
campaign to get funds to pay facebook to port the app
?Since we paid for it, ads would'nt be a
 problem. If messenger for ubuntu
 was a paid
app,I would paid for it. Facebook doesn't know that.
 People
could pay to have a Facebook
'premium' without ads. Anyone have Zuckerber
phone number? He should know this.

There was a large glut of people uninstalling the app (from Android, at least,
but I suspect iOS was the same) a short while ago after it became more and more
intrusive, and they went back to the web client. I suspect this is Facebook's
kickback against that. Yeah, just try to get people to install Telegram
alongside it - at least it's free and quite easy to do, so you may be able to
get some converts. I don't know how well the full site views on a phone - if
it's usable, you could create a web-app with a desktop user agent string so you
get the full site on your phone (and still keep the site sandboxed). That's
what I did with an app I knocked up and pushed up to the store - Fatter: which
gives a full-fat Twitter experience (e.g. you can control list membership, etc).

 Hello,

Is there a possibility to change the user agent the web
 browser on UT
 sends to sites?
E.G. slack.com does not support UT. When opening the site, I
 have no
 access to channels.
If I can say "i am a desktop", the displayed data would be
 the same as
on PC. This is ok on a Meizu 5 PRO.

 Best Regards

I don't think you can do this from the browser settings, however if you create
a new web app (and, I guess, you could create a whole general browser by not
putting a URL pattern restriction in) you can specify the user agent. For
example I created a "full-fat" app to access the Twitter site, as certain
functions are restricted/.blocked on the mobile site, my app's Exec line set up
a desktop agent to send:-

Exec=webapp-container --enable-back-forward --store-session-cookies
--user-agent-string="Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Ubuntu) AppleWebKit/537.36
Chromium/35.0.1870.2 Safari/537.36"
--webappUrlPatterns=https?://*.twitter.com/*,https?://twitter.com/*
http://twitter.com %u

You could then package this as a click package and then manually install it on
your device

I've found the store to be a bit flaky, recently, too. A few
days ago it wouldn't let me search at all, then Monday
though it loaded up all the game items, it only downloaded
about half of the icons, and on later apps that I went into
it didn't download the images at all.  This was on a
strong, reliable wifi network.  Has it had any issues,
or been DDOSed, or something, recently?

As an addendum to this - I just tried the Ubuntu Store and it's not showing me
any results at all, again. I tried removing and adding my Ubuntu One account
and still nothing (I checked my internet connection, and it's fine) - is anyone
else experiencing this, ATM?

 Hi,

So initially the "store" seemed to work and I
could download apps. Then it seemed that I had to enter the
 password for every app download.

I thought that deleting and re-entering the Ubuntu One
 account might solve this issue.

But there is no way to enter the "Ubuntu One
Account" It does not exist on the list of accounts
 to create.

How do you do this from the command line please.

Telegram works fine on my phone (Nexus 4/Mako/OTA10.1) and have tested sending

[Ubuntu-phone] SSH From Phone Using Keys Errors

2016-04-12 Thread Phil
I had RSA keys set up so that I could ssh to my home server and after OTA-10,
these no longer work - it gives an "Agent admitted failure to sign using the
key." error.

Having a quick Google, ssh-add is suggested to fix this, but that doesn't work.
I've run it with debug output and I get this output (the ssh-add would account
for why it's trying twice).

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] backup apps [was] Re: Is it time to flash my phone?

2016-03-22 Thread Phil
I knocked up a couple of very quick and dirty scripts - they are in a
subdirectory of the home path:

fullback.sh
sudo tar cvpjf backupfull.tar.bz2 --exclude=/proc --exclude=/run
--exclude=/var/run --exclude=/cache --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/sys /
--exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/tmp --exclude=backup*.tar.bz2
--exclude=/SWAP.swap --exclude=/data/media/*

homeback.sh
sudo tar cvpjf backuphome.tar.bz2 /home/phablet
--exclude=/home/phablet/backup/* --exclude=Videos --exclude=Pictures

The first one does a full system backup, excluding anything you wouldn't want
to backup. The second backs up all the user data and app prefs, excluding the
potentail large files in pics and vids.

It's not pretty, but it can at least give you a rough backup.

Everytime I open Ubuntu Store it shows me very
useless "highlights". I even can't call them
"highlights", really - few 0-star-rated scopes for
Russian sites. They have very poor functionality, and I
already seen them. Why I can't see, for example, scopes
from Ubuntu Scope Showdown competiton? Exactly they are
most popular now and in the spotlight.
 My question is - why?

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] keyboard layout

2015-11-10 Thread Phil
Hi Julia, so does this mean that if we duplicated those keyboard files on our
phones we could create our own custom layouts?

I believe they are in
/usr/share/maliit/plugins/com/ubuntu/lib/{country code}/
so if I copied the UK one over to a new, usused country code (to avoid
conflicts), I could create a techie one that's more useful for shell usage?
Obviously I'd need to make my image RW, temporarily, and this may be
overwritten/removed by updates, but that should work?

Cheers

 Hello.
I want to raise a suggestion for more consistency in Ubuntu
 Phone user
 interface.
Particularly 2 UI elements: Back button and menu button.

Back button is located in left-upper corner, like here in
 Wi-Fi menu
Stretching the thumb to that corner is not easy (regardless
 left- or
 right-hand usage).
More natural will be using horisontal swipe from the middle
 of the screen,
the same way as it's done for shuffling scopes back.

I think it will work almost everywhere, making interface
 experience more
 streamlined.

Won't that create problems when scrolling around webpages (and many other
things)? I frequently zoom in on webpages and scroll around horizontally, as
well as vertically - how will that gesture be differentiated from scrolling the
page to the right?

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] NOTICE! OTA-7 update notification for stable phone users

2015-10-16 Thread Phil
This is a great e-mail to see - it embraces openness and letting users know
exactly what happened and what the implications of it are. Everyone
appreciates that mistakes can happen, and it's how they are dealt with that
counts - it's really refreshing and heartening to see such a great approach to
dealing with this issue, rather than the usual brushing of it under the carpet
that many other companies would have done.

Thanks for being a great company with a great culture.

 Hello everyone!

As some of you already know during the night (UTC time) our
 OTA-7 image
has popped up as an update for a short period of time for
 stable phone
users. This was caused by an accidental copy of the release
 candidate
image to the wrong channel, so we removed it after a few
 minutes. That
being said, certain users were still able to update already,
 with others
getting a no-op update notification when looking at their
 phones.

Those that installed the update already: think of yourselves
 as the
lucky people that were able to get their hands on the update
 before the
official release! The image is safe and tested by our QA, so
 you should
 not be worried by anything.

Those that just got the notification and didn't manage to
 update:
apologies for the empty update notification. The release is
 planned for
Monday, so just a few more days and it'll be available on
 your devices
 as well!

The official release date stays the same - Monday next week.
 We still
have to do a few formalities on the images and then start
 phasing it out
 to users.
Once again, apologies for the confusion!

 Best regards,

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] RollApp service not work with Ubuntu Phone web browser

2015-10-14 Thread Phil
As a temporary measure, it's easy to write your own web-app wrapper which
overrides the UA, and install it locally, if you work out all the domains that
the app needs to use - I've done this with the Twitter site so that people can
get the full web version, rather than the mobile version, as that offers
certain facilities (e.g. list management) not available on the mobile one.

 It looks like a
simple UA override for rollapp.com is enough to get it
working. I just tested and was able to launch

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] The problem with "no background processing for apps"

2015-10-01 Thread Phil
I thought I'd add my thoughts into this. As a long-time user of the N900
running Maemo, I've been very used to multitasking. I used to laugh at my
friends who ran iOS that they didn't even have the option to multitask, if they
wanted. On my desktop and on my Maemo phone, I've always had: Linux means it's
my device, my choice on how to use it. I could multitask the hell out of my
phone, if I really wanted, and I accepted that this would hit my battery life.
Trying to preserve battery life arbitrarily by blocking multitasking is, IMHO,
a huge step backwards and a move towards Apple's terrible smoke-and-mirrors
strategy. They used to tout that their devices had miraculous battery life,
but this was due to them blocking multitasking - as soon as they dropped in
their multitasking framework, their battery life dropped to the same level as
everyone else's. To me, Linux is about freedom and not having arbitrary
controls inflicted upon the user - this is
one of the reasons that Ubuntu Touch is the first mobile OS to be able to
tempt me away from my N900, but to have this restriction "imposed" is extremely
disappointing. Now, on the flip side, I can understand why multitasking is
disabled, by default - for many users, it's probably the best setting, and
also, whilst it's nice to have on Maemo, it being always-on, for every app is
also not such an optimal setting.

For my use-case - I SSH onto my home server several times a week, and whilst
I'm connected on, I'll flick off to other apps, so whilst I can always
reconnect or bring the suspended program to foreground, this is extremely
inconvenient. I've installed TweakGeek from the Open Store and allowed the
terminal to run in background, and this is perfect and does exactly what I
want, but surely it would be a lot better to include this in the base OS,
rather than have users need to install an external app to enable this
functionality? I would have thought a good option would be to set it up as an
app permission/option, but also to have it as a switchable setting, by app and
then prompt the user to find out whether they want this turning on or off when
the app is installed? This would keep the default as switched off, but allow
it to be turned on, if desired - esp as the tweak app shows that it's possible
to set up by app.

Please note that the parallel with iOS isn't meant to troll, or be deliberately
contentious. I mean this feedback in a constructive way and hope to be able to
give a user's perspective that will hopefully help to improve Touch, which I am
liking more and more, with every update.

Cheers

Phil

 Surly reserving the
right, should be an informed user decision.  Could we not
make it easier to choose how we want to run our phones?

 Nokia when they launched
the N9, has a locked down linux distro, but once enabling
the developer mode it give you the freedom to do with the
 phones as we pleased.

Could we not adopt some similar approach
for 0% resources if you choose a different profile your
applications get different resource available to them,
believe me the terminal on the ubuntu touch is useless, you
cannot do a trace or a ping and switch to a browser without
is suspending or your ssh session timing out.

 Surly it would be easier
now, rather than later to build some kind of multitasking
group, that apps a user does not want to switched to 0%
resources can be added to or agreed with so that the app can
continue to run in the background.

[Ubuntu-phone] Adding Non-"Language" Keyboard

2015-09-10 Thread Phil
I was wanting to add a more techie keyboard layout to my phone, esp making keys
like /, |, *, ", etc accessible from the front keyboard layout, rather than
having to hit the symbol key (_and_ shift for " - I don't know why that is
hidden away back there, but anyway), primarily for when I'm SSHed onto my
server. Can I install my own custom keyboard layout just on my phone? Also,
once I had got it refined, I was thinking of making it available to everyone
(or this may be the only way I can add a new version) - I found this article
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KeyboardLayouts but it refers to adding new language
layouts, would non-language branch merges be accepted, or would they have to
have a valid language code? If the former, what code should I use in the name?
Would "tech" be accepted (to definitely avoid any conflicts) or does it have to
be 2 character?

Cheers
Phil

(P.S. apologies if this ends up being posted twice - I send the first one from
the wrong account, so I'm 99% sure it didn't get through, but thought I'd
better say, in case it did)

Sorry for being stupid, but I can't find where to set custom tones. I can see
all the installed tones, but not where to set a custom one? I'm on Mako R23,
which is, AFAIK, OTA6.

 Also, make sure the child
scopes you're interested in are actually
enabled via Today's scope settings page.

 One a side note, scopes
machinery can deal with misbehaving child scopes
during aggregation (e.g. if a child scopes
times out or crashes) -- if
 something goes
wrong, the aggreagtor scope code would be first to check.

I'm also affected by this - not sure if it's related to the original bug or a
completely new issue. I get reception bars and, unlike the original bug, my
network name displays in the top menu, but I don't get any call or SMS

[Ubuntu-phone] Mako Boots To Blank Screen After OTA-4

2015-06-18 Thread Phil
I got the OTA-4 (I should be on Mako/stable, IIRC) which installed and seemed
to restart OK on my Nexus 4, and I was looking at putting my ssh scripts on
there. I created a bin directory in my home path and added
PATH=$PATH:~/bin
to my .pam_environment file, but after this didn't seem to include it in the
path I thought I'd reboot as I believe that change won't kick in until I next
log in. However, when I restarted, I got the rotating Ubuntu logo then the
screen just went black. Pressing the power button seemed to back-light the
blank screen, to a slightly lighter shade of black, but then nothing else
happens. Forcing a power-off and then restarting does the same. I remembered
something about the app-armour config needing to be rebuilt, so left it for
about 20 mins (though I was sure this would have been done during the upgrade)
but it was still the same.
I then booted into recovery mode and wiped the cache partition, but this still
didn't work.
Next I tried re-running ubuntu-device-flash, this seemed to detect the phone
OK, but the main part of the image push seems to fail:-
11.86 MB / 297.83 MB [>_] 3.98 % 3.95 MB/s
1m12s2015/06/19 01:38:54 error pushing:

I've tried another cache wipe but that push still fails. Ideally, I'd like to
avoid wiping my existing home contents - anything I can try (or can I at least
extract my home contents before trying the factory reset from the recovery
partition).
Cheers
MH

 Hello everyone,

Today we released the community image-based OTA-4 for all
 supported
devices [1] to the stable channel. Mako users on the
ubuntu-touch/stable/ubuntu should be able to upgrade since a
 while now.

In overall it looks like the OTA-4 didn't introduce any new
 blocking
issues. All those reported (like the alarm regression etc.)
 we will try
to target for the OTA-5. We will also add the new keyboard
 layouts to
 the seeds too.

Also, regarding yesterday's 'strange' rc-proposed image.
 Some people
were surprised that suddenly one of the hand-built images
 there didn't
have the full-shell rotation feature. That was a one-off
 special build
we had to make based off a snapshot - generally it is not
 recommended
using the *-proposed channels for normal every-day usage as
 things like
this can happen without any notice. We do not guarantee
 anything in
 these channels.

Last bit: tomorrow no landing e-mail as well, I'll be away
 until Monday

I assume that you mean the section "it might take a while to download and
therefore to appear as available for installation", yes? I was wondering how
long "a while" might be - I'm assuming this could be a day or so, rather than a
number of hours?

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Restarting Unity

2015-06-10 Thread Phil
Thanks, I could have sworn it was something more complex than that, or
something that had a "-" in it - maybe I was thinking of "restart unity8-dash"
for when the scopes go wobbly. I'll put that in a term keyboard shortcut and
link it (or maybe pull and merge to mod an existing one).

Cheers

[Ubuntu-phone] Restarting Unity

2015-06-09 Thread Phil
I'm sure that, recently, someone posted a shell command to restart the Unity UI
if it goes a bit wobbly. I've spent ages looking through the archives and my
old messages, but I can't find it. Can anyone shed any light on this, please -
I'm sure it was quite straightforward: either a "service" command or something
with /usr/bin/unity8-dash .

[Ubuntu-phone] URL Dispatcher

2015-05-21 Thread Phil
When does the URL dispatcher get invoked? I've noticed that from the Twitter
app, for example, as the links go through the t.co domain that it opens them up
in the browser, even if it's ultimately linking to the Twitter site (if linking
to another tweet). To play with how this is routed, I've created a web app
that handles the t.co domain. In there I added a file tco.dispatcher
containing:-

[
{
"protocol": "http",
"domain-suffix": "t.co"
},
{
"protocol": "https",
"domain-suffix": "t.co"
}
]

but following links from the Twitter app still goes to the browser app, rather
than to my one. Do I need to do anything else in the TCO app to get this
registered, or would pressing the link from the Twitter webapp just not invoke
this URL hook, even if this app is registering it successfully?

Cheers - MH

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] call history && DTMF logging

2015-04-24 Thread Phil
Is that a once-only toggle to enable outgoing SSH, or once per usage? This is
a really important issue for me as I use SSH from my current phone (N900 with
Maemo) several times a day practically every day, so to have to enable it each
time is a deal-breaker. I really like Ubuntu Phone and am about to move my
main SIM over to my Nexus 4 that runs it, but if this is coming in then I'll
have to look at another OS.

If it's a simple, one-off switch, then that's fine and I have no problem with
it.

Cheers

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] [BQ] keyboard doesn't show up

2015-04-23 Thread Phil
I've created a set of keyboard shortcuts to show the status, grab the debug
info (if desired) and restart the keyboard daemon from the command line.
Hopefully, if you are having problems and can't get the regular keyboard up,
these should still work in the shell

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~mad-halfling/phone-keyboard-debug/layout/view/head:/PhoneKeyboardDebug.json

Copy it into .config/com.ubuntu.terminal/Layouts/ and it should appear on your
shortcuts list

 Hi Alberto,

Thanks for letting us know, there's a couple of things you
 could do to
 help:

  1) Run "status maliit-server"

And let us know what the output is

  2) Run "system-image-cli --info"

  And paste the output

  3) See if there's a file in /var/crash called
 "_usr_bin_maliit-server.32011.crash" (the number may
 differ), if there
is could you send it to me?

To restart the keyboard manually from the command line you
 can run
 "restart maliit-server".

 Thanks!

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Landing team 16.04.15

2015-04-17 Thread Phil
Had a bit of an odd one after the update - I received an SMS but the phone just
vibrated and didn't play the alert sound. Looking at the sound settings in the
top menu I noticed the usual sound item was labelled "Indicator Sound" and was
blank. A restart fixed this. I minor problem, but I thought I'd mention it.
I'm on Mako 14.10 R18.

 Hello everyone,

As already announced today we have released OTA-3! It's
 still in the
phased upgrade phase but in less than 18 hours the phasing
 should be
complete and the new release should be available to all
 users. So far
nothing critical has been reported by any of the users that
 got the upgrade.

We also partially triaged the reason for bug LP: #1444347
 [1]. It seems
that there is a rare bug in the system-image server during
 delta
generation between images related to certain cases when
 hard-links are
involved. It's being looked into by Foundations and should
 be resolved
soon - we'll keep everyone up-to-date on that. Before
 publishing OTA-3
we have double-confirmed that this case does not apply to
 this image.

There will be also a separate announcement regarding new CI
 Train
landing procedures related to the vivid final freeze later.

From other interesting news: we are once again re-asserting
 the idea of
re-adding ubuntu-calendar-app to the images by default. The
 latest
version got already tested by QA and currently failed, but
 once the
noticed issues are resolved we'll re-try the inclusion.

Final news: there will sadly be no landing e-mail tomorrow
 as I will be
traveling home for almost the whole day. I'll be back in my
 usual
timezone on Monday. Besides that I'll also be attending an
 open source
conference in Poland this Sunday - the DWO'15 - so I'll be
 around in
person case you have any questions regarding the touch
 release processes.

 Cheers!

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] OTA UPADTE

2015-03-17 Thread Phil
All seems to have gone OK on the Nexus 4, too, with one possible exception -
GPS. I don't use it a lot, so it could have been an unusually good lock last
time, but this time the GPS seems to be really flaky. Last time I tried it,
I'm sure that the GPS got a lock within a minute or two, certainly within 5,
but this time it took ages. I had to leave it on a windowsill for ages, and
then the previous lock (in Sensor Status) was listed as being an hour ago.

Typically, as I'm typing this I now get a lock, with the Sensor Status app
showing my correct location, but I'm getting "geolocation failed" on the OSM
Maps Touch and a similar error from Google maps.
The Nearby scope seems to show where I am.

And now, about another 5 mins later after checking stuff whilst composing this
e-mail, the maps seem to pick up the location OK. Has anyone else has any GPS
problems on a Nexus 4, or is this possibly just GPS being a bit flaky, as it
can sometimes be? I'll monitor it and try it tomorrow.

I didn't get any of the apps disappearing, as Wayne did.

Phil

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Scopes default store behaviour

2015-03-17 Thread Phil
As a longer term goal, I'd agree with this. I'm thinking of writing an app and
a scope for BoardgameGeek. I would think that some people would more want the
app if they are heavier BGG users, and others the scope if they are more casual
users who want to quickly search for a game, so from my point of view I'd want
to have it listed as both. Currently I think my best options is to have
BoardgameGeek, an app, and BoardgameGeek Search, as scope, as seperate packages
so they remain as discrete, searchable entities. I understand that this may
not be easily done in the short-term, but I think its value should at least be
discussed for inclusion in the future roadmap.

Cheers

Phil

I think the store should indicate (maybe with
 icons in the listing)
 whether a click
package provides an app or a scope.  For example,
Telegram seems to be a perfectly symbiotic
pair, but I really would have
 appreciated
knowing that there was a scope beforehand.

In addition, there are a large
 number of completely worthless webapps
 and
there are sure to be an equally dubious number of RSS scopes
 in the
near future.  It'd be nice to
see when an official app came with a scope
so that I could look into curating any
 standalone unofficial scopes that
 were
 locally installed.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Scopes default store behaviour

2015-03-13 Thread Phil
I'd definitely second that suggestion - I'm curently (when I manage to make the
time) going to write a scope that will launch into a wrapped web app, and the
scope is definitely the primary part of the pair.

The way we handle scopes in this respect but
 also the prominence in the
 shell is
something we're currently re-evaluating so your feedback
 is
very helpful. However, for time being,
everything in you see in launcher

scope is really just apps. The equivalent for scopes is
"Manage" dash view that you get by

[Ubuntu-phone] Click Package Name

2015-03-10 Thread Phil
Can I please check that I've packaged up my app correctly? I created a
"full-fat" Twitter app called "Fatter" (no, probably not the best name, but
it's Fat-Twitter), which accesses the Twitter site with a desktop(/non-mobile)
user agent so I can access list maintenance, etc. In my manifest.json, under
the name, I put (as I believe I was instructed to on here) I put
"fatter.mad-halfling", my Ubuntu dev portal name being "Mad-Halfling". I
noticed in my .cache directory, on the phone, some of my old test app have left
entries have sub-directories called
com.ubuntu.developer.mad-halfling.
as do some apps created by other devs, e.g.
com.ubuntu.developer.danielholm.freeciv
but for my published app it's
fatter.mad-halfling

Have I published/named this correctly, as I would have thought it would have
the FQDN of the app in reverse form, rather than just this shortened form?
Cheers
Phil

[Ubuntu-phone] New Click Package Creation Parameters

2015-02-24 Thread Phil
Looking to create a scope that I'll package up and submit to the store, so I
want to check I'm setting up the package parameters correctly, as they've
changed.

On the tutorial page
https://developer.ubuntu.com/en/scopes/tutorials/scope-development-procedures/
it lists Domain but on the new wizard this is listed as Nickname with the
default content of "username". Do I need to enter my dev FQDN in here -
com.ubuntu.developer.mad-halfling - or should this just be my username -
mad-halfling - in here, with the rest of the domain name being added during the
packaging process? As an aside, just wondering if that screenshot should be
updated to reflect the new label, along with an example if it's no longer the
FQDN that's needed.

Cheers

Is it possible to make either webapp's container, or its contents, more
visually distinct - either by adding in a title bar, or
modifying/adding-to/overriding the site's css? What I am trying to do is make
a second twitter wrapper, so I can look at and update two accounts
side-by-side, so I want them to ideally be visually distinct from one-another
so I don't update content to the wrong one.

I've created a second wrapper app, and that works fine with the twitter icon
coloured red, instead of blue, so I can see which one I'm switching to ok from
the launcher, but once I'm in one, or go to the app-switcher-mode, there's no
indication which one is which. I was thinking of some sort of app title,
adding a border to the app, or possibly even adding CSS (I'll come to that in a
minute) to change the generated content.

I notice that in the core Twitter app there's a Twitter.user.js file, so out of
optimisim I added in a .user.css containing
body { font-size: 200%; }
but as the .js file more communicates with the OS, I didn't expect this to work.

I've looked at the bits on
https://developer.ubuntu.com/en/web/ubuntu-webapps-guide/ and watched the
first, webapp dev, part of the tutorial vid, but I can't find anything on this.
Am I missing something obvious (is there some more detailed documentation I've
missed) or can this not currently be done?

Just on this subject, I assume that --enable-addressbar is
implied-as-being/effectively set when --enable-back-forward is set, yes?

Thanks

MH

PS - sorry if this double-posts, think I sent it from the wrong e-mail account
the first time.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Problem Setting Up SDK - Creating Click Package

2015-02-05 Thread Phil
Marvellous, thanks, that helped sort out my problem. I didn't have the PPA
installed - as Niklas Wenzel mentioned, on the install page it said it was in
the repository, so being a good lad I followed the instructions and didn't add
the PPA - I see the site has been updated to instruct always adding the PPA,
now. I also had all the kits installed and included, but I also had the
desktop kit included so I could test it locally, and it was this that seemed to
cause the problem in the 14.10 repo version. Removing it then alllowed me to
package it. However I then got an out-of-date dev version, and then adding in
the PPA and updating, then fixed this. The package option does seem to work in
the lastest version with the desktop kit included, but if anyone else has a
similar problem (and finds this in the archives), then try removing the desktop
(localPC) kit (however, as I mentioned, in the latest version this does seem to
work, now) when you package.

Anyway, I now have my app installed on my phone - it's only a rubbish wrapper
of the Mozilla website, but now I can get working on something more useful.

Thanks for the help, much appreciated
Phil

 Hi Phil,

first thing to check: Do you
have the UbuntuSDK ppa enabled? Thats the
main channel to always get the most recent
 version
 of the SDK:

 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-sdk-team/ppa
 && sudo apt-get update
 &&
 sudo apt-get dist-upgrade && sudo apt-get install
 ubuntu-sdk

 The
"command failed" message comes probably from the
 fact that the
 click-review tool returns a
error code because of the warning,
 that does
not mean that there was no click package created. The click

package is put always in the builddirectory
 of the active
 buildconfiguration. We are
about to release a update to the publish tab
that should not show that anymore.

 If only the "validate
existing click package" is enabled it means that
you currently have a Kit selected or project
 loaded that can not
 be used for click
packaging. You need to use a Ubuntu-SDK Kit (can be
 created in Tools->Options->Ubuntu->
 create chroot or alternatively on
 the
devices page if you have a device/emulator attached).

Also if you are on IRC, ping
me there my nick there is zbenjamin on
 channel #ubuntu-app-devel, #ubuntu-touch,
 #ubuntu-devel (freenode).

 Cheers,

 Benjamin

[Ubuntu-phone] Problem Setting Up SDK - Creating Click Package

2015-02-03 Thread Phil
I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but I've installed (and purged then

Am I missing a package or something obvious?

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Best Way Of Reloading A Screwed System

2013-09-16 Thread Phil
Yup, that sorted it, thanks a lot - I can't believe I didn't check the options
and do that myself, I'm not normally that much of a giblet-head (in my defence,
I've got a stinking cold and my head has been feeling like it's full of cotton
wool, these last few days)

I very much appreciate your prompt help, now I've got a happy system I can
start giving it a good poke and start filing bugs and issues
Cheers

I've noticed that when the auto detect fails in the recovery
 console,
supplying -d can enable further progress. (in
 your case,
 probably -d mako)

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Best Way Of Reloading A Screwed System

2013-09-15 Thread Phil
Hmmm, don't seem to be able to use phablet-flash to do this. In the recovery
console adb devices detects it, but

sudo phablet-flash ubuntu-system

just gives

INFO:phablet-flash:Device detected as /system/bin/sh: getprop: not found
ERROR:phablet-flash:Unsupported device, autodetect fails device

Do I need to use adb push up to /sdcard/autodeploy.zip when in recovery console
to be able to load up the ubuntu-system (RO, OTA updates enabled, yes?) image
up to the phone or is there a way of using phablet-flash to do this? If I have
to adb push it up, is that the saucy-preinstalled-system-armel+mako.img image,
or should I still be using the saucy-preinstalled-touch-armhf.zip file?

Cheers
Phil

I don't see why it would be a problem. When you install
 ubuntu-system,
it backs up the home folder, wipes the phone, installs a
 clean image,
 and then restores the backup.

OTA updates should work then. If you need to make it
 writeable, there's
a file you can create to make the system writeable, though
 it's
considered experimental or something. Can't remember the
 file, it's been
mentioned on the list a few times though, just search for
 it.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Best Way Of Reloading A Screwed System

2013-09-14 Thread Phil
Do you do that on the initial installation, or after doing the phablet-flash
cdimage-touch? As I understand it, it should be done initially and should be a
full install of the RO image, as the cdimage-touch is the RW version, if you
need to poke around with the guts of the system for dev work, BUT I saw
somewhere online where someone had done first the cdimage-touch install, then
the ubuntu-system image, one after the other, as if the latter were an upgrade
or patch to the former? I suspect that what they actually did was flash with
one image, then overwrite it with another. This then begs the question - if
they are the two different version that I suspect they are, which one does the
manual process install - checking the wiki again, I think it's the cdimage,
which explains why the OTA didn't work - am I correct? So, this returns to my
original issue, am I ok to try to phablet the ubuntu-system image onto my phone
in the state in which it is in? And
if, as Fabian said, the phablet doesn't work with the system in this state, is
there a way in which I can get the ubuntu-system image onto my system so I can
then install updates, rather than reinstalling for the latest version?

Cheers
Phil

 Hi
Before using the OTA update you have to do
 'phablet-flash ubuntu-system', as far as I
 understand

 Hello,

the OTA update never worked for me so far, so I always did
 "phablet-flash cdimage-touch" instead. But
strangely I get plenty of updated packages on "apt-get
 upgrade" immediately after upgrading anyway.

When I first screwed my device I managed to recover it with
the manual installation routine described in the wiki.
phablet-flash refused to work in that state, but at least it
didn't make things worse. YMMV, so if you want to be
sure, wait for the pros to answer ;). I'm just a
 beginner on these matters.
