It would help if you would actually explain "makes GUI fail".  what's
failing?  what did you start with?  what did you end up with?

Can you boot at all?  Can you log in?  Can you see panels?  If you're
going ask about useful info and file a useful bug, you need to provide
useful detail first and foremost...

That being said, I'm typing this on a test system that I did a Lucid
-> Maverick -> Natty install on the other day and have no "GUI fail".
I have seen other issues with Unity, but not a total failure...

If you can log in at all, or at least boot at all, try hitting
ctrl-alt-F1 and then logging in to the console.  Then run "sudo
apt-get dist-upgrade" and see if you can apply any updates.  That is
dependent on having a working network, of course...

about the failure for the rest of ubuntu?
