Yes, eventually since it seems to have been submitted to the upstream
kernel. That being said it'd be good to get this fix SRU'ed into Ubuntu
16.04 and maybe Ubuntu 16.10.

Spoke to Brian Murray on ubuntu-qa on irc - have my answer. At some
point in the new year I'll follow up.

Thanks all

The issue has been kicking since 2011 (bug 792085 was reported in
2011)[1]

Recently suse found a fix [2]

Is this something that will eventually find it's way to us through
kernel?

I can only imagine that the situation will get worse as more people
purchase usb3 devices.

Yes I can unmount from a terminal - shouldn't have to - this is *buntu.

Linux for the *masses*

The main reason for bringing this up on the quality mailing list is to
give the issue some more visibility.

Hi flocculant,

Have you checked the device status through the lsblk command? If you
are done with the device, you might have to enter a umount command for

I'm wary of file managers' ability to mount/unmount drives. Better to
set up a simple startup script which mounts all the drives at the
beginning. It's a cinch then to umount drives as they are not
needed. Anything that could result in data loss is best entrusted to
a terminal.

In fact, I missed the bug report on the original message just because I was

Have you checked your PC's firmware (BIOS) is up to date?

Colin
1 version out, change in bios is for "Update CPU microcode for win10
support with Pentium AE"

Given that suse appear to have a kernel patch to fix this - not sure
that flashing bios and all the pain that *could* cause is something I'm
willing to do nor likely to help.

All that aside the main question in the thread is "Is this something
that will eventually find it's way to us through kernel?"
