[Bug 248067] [NEW] mysql server can't be started: mysql.host doesn't exist

2008-07-13 Thread Torsten Bronger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mysql-server-5.0

The MySQL server process can't be restarted:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/src/chantal$ sudo /etc/init.d/mysql restart
 * Stopping MySQL database server mysqld
   [ OK ]
 * Starting MySQL database server mysqld
   [fail]

daemon.log says:

Jul 13 11:18:03 wilson mysqld_safe[7307]: started
Jul 13 11:18:03 wilson mysqld[7311]: 080713 11:18:03 InnoDB: Started; log
sequence number 0 43685
Jul 13 11:18:03 wilson mysqld[7311]: 080713 11:18:03 [ERROR] Fatal error: Can't
open and lock privilege tables: Table 'mysql.host' doesn't exist
Jul 13 11:18:03 wilson mysqld_safe[7322]: ended

I haven't figured out which actions have led to this behaviour. I'm not
aware of having made something unusual.

Re-installing mysql-server help but not for very long.

Still here with 8.04.1: when sshd is started via inetd, /var/run/sshd

Re: Ubuntu Server Book Needed?

2008-07-13 Thread Sander van Vugt
Hi Mike,

I'm the author of the beginning book. Currently working on the second
edition (and an advanced book as well, both will be out by Q4 this
year). I'm interested in your comments about the virtualization chapter.
Would you be willing to provide some more in-depth feedback on that
chapter? That could help in making it a chapter that better forfills
your needs :-)

Thanks,
Sander

I actually have the first book that you linked too and have found it
pretty useful so far. I was actually very disappointed with the
section on virtualization though which very briefly covers KVM, Xen
and I forget the third one off the top of my head.

So I would think that there would be interest in this given Ubuntu's
popularity - although personally I would even like to see a server
book dedicated to just running virtual machines on Ubuntu server. I
know I would buy it (if it was a good in depth book).

 Subject: Ubuntu Server Book Needed?
 Date: Fri, 11 Jul 2008 13:43:29 -0400

 Hello all,

Megan with Manning Publications here. I normally do not post general
inquiries about books to technical mailing lists, but in this case I
was encouraged to do so, so here goes.

I'm seeking feedback from the community regarding the interest-level
for a book on Ubuntu Server. We've had the book in development for a
while now, but the project stalled out several months ago, and we must
now determine whether we should push to complete it or not. In the
meantime, another publisher has put out a book on the subject, and a
second book has been announced for later this year (see links to
 Amazon listings below).

So we are wondering, is our Ubuntu Server book still needed? (See
http://www.manning.com/galvin for more info.) If you have any thoughts
about whether such a book would be welcomed, please feel free to
respond. If you would prefer to keep your opinion on this private,
you can write to me directly at meyo [at] manning.com. We would
appreciate any input that you are willing to give.

 Kind regards,
 Megan Yockey

Re: Looking for users of redhat-cluster-suite on Ubuntu

2008-07-13 Thread Neil Wilson
2008/7/11 Etienne Goyer [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
We (some colleagues and myself) are currently working on white paper
about HA clustering using redhat-cluster-suite on Ubuntu. We would like

At Brightbox we currently use the cluster suite with our virtualised
Ubuntu Ruby on Rails service. We only use a bit of it, and essentially
we have found it to be more trouble than it is worth. A great number
of our availability problems are due to problems with the cluster
technology not behaving properly.

Essentially the issue is that the cluster suite couples machines
closely together - that is its purpose. And like all coupling it
creates a system that is brittle in the face of unforeseen problems.

So we've taken the view that we're going to eliminate both clustering
and NFS from our setup and instead use GlusterFS (http://gluster.org)
and database clustering as our shared facilities. The rest of the
design is going to be shared nothing as far as is humanly possible.

Anybody who has struggled with clustering, NFS and yowled with
frustration at stale file handles will find GlusterFS a complete
breath of fresh air.

There are Ubuntu Hardy packages for GlusterFS here:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-ruby-backports/+archive for anybody
who fancies giving it a whirl.

Getting Ruby on Rails into Ubuntu Server - properly

2008-07-13 Thread Neil Wilson
I hear
(http://ubuntuserver.wordpress.com/2008/07/07/how-to-improve-the-ruby-on-rails-experience-for-next-ubuntu-release/)
that Ubuntu Server is looking to improve its Rails experience. As it
happens I've been coming at the same problem from the opposite
direction.

At Brightbox (www.brightbox.co.uk) we do Ruby on Rails with Ubuntu on
virtualised servers for a living and we have a few projects on going.

- Improve the packaging of Ubuntu Ruby, Rails and supporting
infrastructure to make it easier for our customers to select the
framework technology they want to use.
- Packaging of tools to help development and deployment of Rails applications.
- Reworking our virtualisation stack from the current Xen based system
to one based upon the 'official' Ubuntu KVM system.

As we're free software nuts at Brightbox, we'd like to feed our Rails
experience back into Ubuntu Server and hopefully get a bit of a guide
from the team as to where we should be going with our virtualisation
stack.

If that is something of interest, let me know. (I've already put my
thoughts on the Rails specification and I have tried to contact the
Blueprint/specification owner without success so far. Obviously I'm
not 100% au-fait with Ubuntu-server processes).

Re: Looking for users of redhat-cluster-suite on Ubuntu

2008-07-13 Thread Alexander Kraev
Hi Etienne,

One year ago I built HA cluster based on heartbeat and ocfs2. The
cluster contains two Dell servers and one storage running in a cluster
mode and directly connected to the servers via SCSI cables(DAS). The
system is powered by SLES 10.2 and it's still in production. The HA
cluster contains several resource groups like Apache + VIP, MySQL + VIP,
Oracle XE + VIP and our Java based application. The application like
Apache, MySQL and Oracle XE use the same storage but they have different
per nodes log directory, pid files and some other files like
listener.ora. I use OCFS2CDSL to make one file or directory unique per
node. I used the Heartbeat GUI application to configure the cluster and
now I use it as a cluster management tool. Let me know if you need more
details.

Sorry for my English.

Regards,
Alexander

Procmail and global mail archive.

2008-07-13 Thread Paul Schulz
Greetings,

Hopefully someone can help, or can make a suggestion on what I am doing
wrong.

I am using postfix and procmail (3.22-16ubuntu3) on a Ubuntu(7.10)
system to create a global email archive
(/var/backup/mail_archive_date/user) of all received email.

It is generally working well, except every I've been seeing 'procmail'
segfaults in the logs. The sender gets a 'failed to deliver' messages,
while the recipient receives no message at all..

(This is not how I would like it work.. failure of my archiving setup
shouldn't affect delivery.)

I need a fix, and/or a suggestion on how to make it more robust, as it
'feels' like it is message dependant. (I see nothing for days, then a
stack of errors.)

Ok.. some more information..

The original message received be the sender contained..

Command died with signal 11: /usr/bin/procmail. Command output:
  procmail:
  Exceeded LINEBUF

I up'ed the LINEBUF setting in the /etc/prcomailrc file (see below) but
I'm now seeing segfaults for procmail in the logs.

  eg.
  ...
  [17752114.220056] procmail : 1 Time(s)
  [17752131.406728] procmail : 1 Time(s)
  [17752749.103770] procmail : 1 Time(s)
  [17752766.292519] procmail : 1 Time(s)
  [17753383.952322] procmail : 1 Time(s)
  [17753401.133164] procmail : 1 Time(s)

NOTE: The users reporting the errors, don't have their own .procmailrc
file. Here is the global file.

--[/etc/procmailrc]--
LINEBUF=32768
MAILDIR=$HOME/Maildir/
LOGFILE=$HOME/.procmaillog
LOGABSTRACT=no
VERBOSE=off
DEFAULT=$HOME/Maildir/
COMSAT=no

Looking at the table of contents on Amazon, it doesn't appear that you cover
Ubuntu as a mail server in the current edition. Is that planned for the next
edition or the advanced book? I'm going a lot of work to make mail server
setup more accessible in Intrepid and I'm curious if you are going to cover
anything in that area?
