[Bug 256621] Re: [CVE-2008-3459] OpenVPN vulnerability allows arbitrary command execution via crafted configuration

2008-09-01 Thread Thierry Carrez
To fix this in hardy (rc7-based, probably affected) :

Difficult to extract a minimal patch from the RC8 to RC9 diff. I removed
what was obviously windowsish and the version number updates. The
problem is that the exact nature of the vulnerability doesn't seem to
have been disclosed, that the upstream fix is introducing behavioral
changes and that the real fix is drowned in a sea of security hardening
efforts. What we are looking for must be in route.c, lladdr.c, maybe in
multi.c...

I'll try to get more info from upstream.

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2008-09-01 Thread miguel
I've experimented this bug on a new system I sold.. After a few days
working, one of the disks just died for my bad luck. I lost a Lot of
hours trying to fix it, resulting downtime to our costumer.. I couldn't
believe when I saw the panic I went to was the result of a bug not fixed
on this so called LTS release.. I would call Hardy a Long Time Supported
Testing Release.. This bug has been here more than 1 year.. I just
dumped hardy out of my way and went back to Debian Etch. No more Hard(y)
and strange works for me! It's extremely weird that the Debian distro
doesn't have this bug (or behaviour) and Ubuntu has. Not that weird.. I
just can't imagine Debian simply put out there a final release with a
serious bug like this one..

[Bug 196809] Re: .local domain join doesn't work out-of-the-box on 8.04

2008-09-01 Thread Ante Karamatić
Topic change is a bit misleading. '.local' domain works in Ubuntu 8.04,
otherwise you wouldn't be able to share music with your Mac friends or
detect printers or services on network or... It doesn't work in a way
Microsoft thinks it should. We can't support both, so we should decide
on one of those and provide documentation on how to make it work with
the other one.

Apple documented this problem, while Microsoft is playing 'I don't care'
game. IETF still didn't decide on which way to go.

[Bug 205236] Re: Likewise Open 4.0.5 doesn't work out of the box in Hardy.

2008-09-01 Thread Thierry Carrez
Thanks for the info. If you experience problems with Likewise-Open even
with your workaround, please file a separate bug with more information
on that error that you shouldn't skip. I'll rename this bug so that it
points to .local domains since it is specific to them.

I confirm it doesn't work out of the box if the domain you try to join
is named something.local. This is the result of a war between
Microsoft and Apple over the .local domain, with Ubuntu siding with
Apple:

Ubuntu (like Apple) uses Zeroconf for simple service discovery on LAN,
and this makes use of the .local domain. On the other hand, Microsoft AD
won't work correctly if its domain name is not served by its own DNS.
Using .local for a domain name is therefore a recipe for trouble [1].

If for some reason you have to join an AD domain called
something.local, then you want to disable Zeroconf because the two
won't work together. You want the .local DNS domain to be served
primarily by the Microsoft DNS and not by Zeroconf. So you edit the
/etc/nsswitch.conf file accordingly.

Thanks for your bug report. Your debdiff doesn't work as expected as
/var/run is a tmpfs directory and is recreated every time the system is

Moreover, according the init script /etc/init.d/slapd, the symlink is
there to maintain backward compatibility with openldap 2.1 client
libraries:

# Backward compatibility with OpenLDAP 2.1 client libraries.

[Bug 257667] Re: wrong permissions to access ldapi

2008-09-01 Thread Javier Uruen Val
Hi Mathias,

Thanks for taking care of this.

Yes, /var/run is recreated every time the system is booted, but that's
fine because /etc/init.d/slapd does the work ok:

# Make sure the pidfile directory exists with correct permissions
piddir=`dirname $SLAPD_PIDFILE`
if [ ! -d $piddir ]; then
mkdir -p $piddir
[ -z $SLAPD_USER ] || chown -R $SLAPD_USER $piddir
[ -z $SLAPD_GROUP ] || chgrp -R $SLAPD_GROUP $piddir
fi

So as there's no umask the permissions for $piddir will be fine.

The issue comes up between the first time the package is installed and
the first boot. That's what my debdiff tries to address.

Re: [Bug 123427] Re: [apport] package mysql-server-5.0 failed to install/upgrade:

2008-09-01 Thread Heitzso
:: Do you have any files in /var/lib/mysql/ ?

I just checked two of my systems and, yes, there are files there.

However, I wrestled through this on all of the boxes I hit it.
It bit me on at least three systems. It is an extremely awkward process
to wrestle through the bug ... typically taking several hours of thrash on
each box. But I have mysql working on the other side of the bug
insanity on all of the systems.

that it may have something to do with DNS lookups or certs (there were
errors in the logs) but have eliminated these possibilities.

How did you eliminate these possibilities?

RE: Ubuntu JeOS

2008-09-01 Thread Marcus Young
Soren,

there was an error in postgresql-8.3-main.log along the lines of unable to
load root.crt. After commenting out ssl=true in postgresql.conf the error
went away. The only error in the log now seems to be incomplete startup
packet which I think is related to the client rather than the server? With
DNS, I just did some simple pings to localhost and hostname.domain. I noticed
that the Avahi mDNS deamon starts just before postgresql.

This doesn't seem to be in standard, though I'm somewhat surprised that

This is in desktop, not standard. A good candidate for the server seed.

I've added both of these to the server seed now that it exists.
