[Bug 256621] Re: [CVE-2008-3459] OpenVPN vulnerability allows arbitrary command execution via crafted configuration
To fix this in hardy (rc7-based, probably affected) : Difficult to extract a minimal patch from the RC8 to RC9 diff. I removed what was obviously windowsish and the version number updates. The problem is that the exact nature of the vulnerability doesn't seem to have been disclosed, that the upstream fix is introducing behavioral changes and that the real fix is drowned in a sea of security hardening efforts. What we are looking for must be in route.c, lladdr.c, maybe in multi.c... I'll try to get more info from upstream. ** Attachment added: rc8_to_rc9.diff.gz http://launchpadlibrarian.net/17199440/rc8_to_rc9.diff.gz -- [CVE-2008-3459] OpenVPN vulnerability allows arbitrary command execution via crafted configuration https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/256621 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openvpn in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

I've experimented this bug on a new system I sold.. After a few days working, one of the disks just died for my bad luck. I lost a Lot of hours trying to fix it, resulting downtime to our costumer.. I couldn't believe when I saw the panic I went to was the result of a bug not fixed on this so called LTS release.. I would call Hardy a Long Time Supported Testing Release.. This bug has been here more than 1 year.. I just dumped hardy out of my way and went back to Debian Etch. No more Hard(y) and strange works for me! It doesn't work in a way Microsoft thinks it should. We can't support both, so we should decide on one of those and provide documentation on how to make it work with the other one. [Bug 205236] Re: Likewise Open 4.0.5 doesn't work out of the box in Hardy.
Thanks for the info. If you experience problems with Likewise-Open even with your workaround, please file a separate bug with more information on that error that you shouldn't skip. I'll rename this bug so that it points to .local domains since it is specific to them. I confirm it doesn't work out of the box if the domain you try to join is named something.local. This is the result of a war between Microsoft and Apple over the .local domain, with Ubuntu siding with Apple: Ubuntu (like Apple) uses Zeroconf for simple service discovery on LAN, and this makes use of the .local domain. On the other hand, Microsoft AD won't work correctly if its domain name is not served by its own DNS. Using .local for a domain name is therefore a recipe for trouble [1]. If for some reason you have to join an AD domain called something.local, then you want to disable Zeroconf because the two won't work together. You want the .local DNS domain to be served primarily by the Microsoft DNS and not by Zeroconf. So you edit the /etc/nsswitch.conf file accordingly. [Bug 257667] Re: wrong permissions to access ldapi
Hi Mathias, Thanks for taking care of this. Yes, /var/run is recreated every time the system is booted, but that's fine because /etc/init.d/slapd does the work ok: # Make sure the pidfile directory exists with correct permissions piddir=`dirname $SLAPD_PIDFILE` if [ ! -d $piddir ]; then mkdir -p $piddir [ -z $SLAPD_USER ] || chown -R $SLAPD_USER $piddir [ -z $SLAPD_GROUP ] || chgrp -R $SLAPD_GROUP $piddir fi So as there's no umask the permissions for $piddir will be fine.
