Re: [Bug 713204] Re: package backuppc 3.1.0-9ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-02-10 Thread John Brown
Andreas

FYI - after mucking about for days in an effort to get the backuppc user
with the right permissions and a known password (using htpasswd), I
eventually did a *complete* removal of the backuppc package in Synaptic;
then deleted the backuppc user; then reinstalled.

This time it went in just fine, giving the dialogue box about the creation
of the backuppc user and password. So, although I do not recall having
previously put a copy of backuppc on my machine and then deleting it without
having ever used it, it looks as though that *is* the likely source of the
problem. The only difference between this reinstall and the previous one was
that this time I deleted the backuppc user (as hinted at in your email). So,
problem solved.

Thanks, John

 Looking closer at your term log I see that there are no mention of any

 that system?

  I was using Ubuntu Software Centre to install BackupPC, but the script

  not yet set up Apache2 config files - I've been using lighttpd

  Maybe a bit more clarity about the dependencies on the Info page would
  be useful. I'll try to get Apache2 working properly and then do a re-
  install from Ubuntu Software Centre.

[Bug 714335] Re: KVM SMP Linux Guests Hang

2011-02-10 Thread Brian Knoll
I also want to mention that in my last comment, Launchpad turned the
upstream bug number into a hyperlink and referenced an Ubuntu bug of the
same number; that link is not correct, but I can't edit it because I
don't have access. Please follow the first link in post #11 (the one on

[Bug 714335] Re: KVM SMP Linux Guests Hang

2011-02-10 Thread Brian Knoll
Okay, I have done some more research and testing and I now think the
following upstream KVM bug is the problem:

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detailaid=2968899group_id=180599atid=893831

Upstream KVM bug 2968899 describes a bug which causes the SMP guest to
lock up when setting the time. I disabled NTP on my guests to test
this, and my guests boot fine without NTP. Obviously, that's not an
acceptable workaround because having managed time is a requirement for
any well-managed machine, especially a server.

But it does look to me like the bug is an upstream bug. However, it
doesn't look like it's getting any attention from anyone, unfortunately.

2011-02-10 Thread James Page
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if
you could test a current, supported, Ubuntu version. If you can test it,
and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload
updated logs by running apport-collect 298823, and any other logs that
are relevant for this particular issue.

[Bug 702714] Re: package exim4-base 4.71-3ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new post-removal script returned error exit status 1

2011-02-10 Thread James Page
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying to help make
Ubuntu better.

Please try using fuser -v to return the process locking process
/var/cache/debconf/config.dat (if any). Kill the offending process and
try performing the install again.

More often than not this is only a transient situation and fuser will
return nothing. Simply performing the update again should solve this
issue.

Please update this bug report if this resolves your issue.

Thanks

[Bug 715152] Re: ntp wont run on IPv6 only host unless lo has 127.0.0.1 address

2011-02-10 Thread James Page
Confirmed on a Lucid image; however the only way I was able to remove
the 127.0.0.1 address from lo was to use the following command:

ip addr del 127.0.0.1/32 dev lo

ntp then fails to start. As stated in the original bug report, adding
the address back to the interface fixes the issue.

How where you able to permanently disable the ipv4 address of the lo
device?

[Bug 708023] Re: exim 4.74 released fixes CVE-2011-0017

2011-02-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package exim4 - 4.69-2ubuntu0.3

---
exim4 (4.69-2ubuntu0.3) hardy-security; urgency=low

  * SECURITY UPDATE: local privilege escalation via alternate config file
(LP: #697934)
- debian/patches/80_CVE-2010-4345.dpatch: backport massive behaviour-
  altering changes from upstream git to fix issue.
- debian/patches/81_CVE-2010-4345-docs.dpatch: backport documentation
  changes.
- debian/patches/67_unnecessaryCopt.dpatch: Do not use exim's -C option
  in utility scripts. This would not work with ALT_CONFIG_PREFIX.
  Patch obtained from Debian's 4.69-9+lenny2.
- Build with WHITELIST_D_MACROS=OUTGOING. After this security update,
  exim will not regain root privileges (usually necessary for local
  delivery) if the -D option was used. Macro identifiers listed in
  WHITELIST_D_MACROS are exempted from this restriction. mailscanner

- Build with TRUSTED_CONFIG_LIST=/etc/exim4/trusted_configs. After this
  security update, exim will not re-gain root privileges (usually
  necessary for local delivery) if the -C option was used. This makes
  it impossible to start a fully functional damon with an alternate
  configuration file. /etc/exim4/trusted_configs (can) contain a list
  of filenames (one per line, full path given) to which this
  restriction does not apply.

[Bug 566793] Re: [SRU] euca-get-console-output gives first 64k of output, not most recent

2011-02-10 Thread Scott Moser
I really would love to see this fixed in lucid. It is a real pain when
you're trying to debug an instance that has rebooted a couple times. I
lost a couple hours debugging one that I thought was locked during boot
because I only looked at the console output, while the instance was
actually fine.

Hi Christoph,

2011/2/10 Lupe Christoph

 Since the supposed fix, I have had several ne incidents of this bug.

 I'm now running Maverick Meerkat, and the log shows this:

 Feb 10 14:10:14 alanya apcsmart[3238]: Communications with UPS lost:
 Communications with UPS lost - check cabling
 Feb 10 14:10:14 alanya apcsmart[3238]: smartmode: ser_send_char failed:

 Feb 10 14:10:14 alanya apcsmart[3238]: last message repeated 9 times

 ... and nauseam, or until the /var/log partition fills up. The nut
 package is up to data (2.4.3-1ubuntu5). Please reopen this bug.

could you please send us a driver debug output for investigation purpose.
Ie, after having stopped the running NUT instance, launch:
$ sudo /lib/nut/apcsmart -D -a device-id-from-ups.conf

let it run for a few seconds / minutes (at least, have a couple of issue
reproduction), then break using Ctrl+C. Don't forget to relaunch NUT then...

cheers,
Arnaud

[Bug 651875] Re: Bind 9.7.0-P1 validation errors

2011-02-10 Thread Dave Walker
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: bind9

  Ubuntu 10.04 LTS still uses Bind 9.7.0-P1, which has a serious validation bug.
  When turning on DNSSEC, NXdomains are reported as SERVFAILS:

  ;  DiG 9.7.0-P1  www.bbc.net.uk
  ;; global options: +cmd
  ;; Got answer:
  ;; -HEADER- opcode: QUERY, status: SERVFAIL, id: 46074

  See also the discussion on the Bind User list: http://www.mail-
  archive.com/bind-us...@lists.isc.org/msg05701.html

  There was a proposed patch, but it was never released because Bind 9.7.0
  is no longer supported by ISC, and should be upgraded to Bind 9.7.2-P2
  at least.

  Since DNSSEC is gaining momentum, and more and more TLD's and domains
  are DNSSEC signed, this bug is starting to annoy more and more people
  that rely on log errors for Bind when introducing DNSSEC.
+
+ === SRU ===
+ IMPACT: In some situations, when DNSSEC is enabled bind9 could incorrectly
return SERVFAIL rather than a correct result.
(http://www.isc.org/announcement/bind-9-dnssec-validation-fails-new-ds-record)
+
+ RESOLUTION: Correctly check that DNSSEC/DLV auth status before declaring
+ the chain broken. Fixed upstream and cherry picked, as part of release
+ 9.6.2-P2.
+
+ PATCH:
+
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~davewalker/ubuntu/lucid/bind9/lp_651875/revision/22
+
+ TEST CASE:
+ Setup bind9, enable DNSSEC and DLV validation
+ Lookup a DNSSEC domain.
+ Sign a TLD and insert it into the zone file. :P
+ Or.. Wait until March 31st when this will happen with .com
+ Lookup a DNSSEC domain (may have to wait for cache to expire)
+ Witness SERVFAIL on lookup.
+
+ DISCUSSION:
+ A good discussion of what happens if this isn't resolved is here,
http://www.isc.org/community/blog/201004/dnssec-transitions-and-signing-arpa .
The regression potential is low, limited to an additional 'if' check which
originated from upstream and has been released a significant time.

[Bug 715281] Re: Upon update, /etc/postfix/main.cf stopped procmail processing

2011-02-10 Thread James Page
It looks like (according to the comments) the dovecot-postfix.postinst
script should not re-configure /etc/postfix/main.cf if it has already
been configured by this package; however the logic in this script always
moves the current backup file (indicator that it has already been
configured) prior to then testing for the presence of the backup file
and the reconfiguring postfix anyway.

I believe the change to use postfix should have been preserved during
the upgrade; however the logic in the script causes it to be
reconfigured every time the package is upgraded.

Looking at the current development release, although this package has
been renamed to mail-stack-delivery, the same logic exists in the
postinst script.

[Bug 716528] [NEW] kvm 100% when performing apparently IO operations

2011-02-10 Thread Andres Rodriguez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

Version: Natty
Kernel Version: 2.6.38-2-generic x86_64
KVM Version: QEMU emulator version 0.13.0 (qemu-kvm-devel)
LibVirt Version: libvirtd (libvirt) 0.8.5

I created a VM using virt-manager. During the installation, the process
kvm has a CPU usage goes of 100%.

Being aware of the virt-manager [1], bug #707313, (using 100% CPU), I
used top to determine weather this was virt-manager of kvm itself. After
doing so, I noticed that both, kvm and python processes where more than
80% of usage. So I decided to go ahead and close virt-manager and the
VNC window for the current VM. Then, I returned to a terminal to see
top's output, and it showed now that the kvm process was the only one
with 100% CPU usage.

Note that the CPU usage is only at 100% when doing IO, apparently.

A video showing this behavior can be found at [2].

Thanks Andres, the .xml looks fine, but the command spawned by libvirt
certainly does not. In particular, the drive definition for natty.img
looks bogus, with its 'if=none'.

If you close virt-manager and start the vm with 'virsh start natty1', do
you get the same command?

[Bug 580590] Re: Squid no longer uses $SQUID_MAXFD

2011-02-10 Thread Andrew Glen-Young
Steps to reproduce
==

Initial Install and Tests
-

$ sudo apt-get install squid squid-client
$ grep MAX /etc/default/squid·
SQUID_MAXFD=1024
$ sudo status squid
squid start/running, process 2671
$ squidclient -p 3128 -l 127.0.0.1 -h 127.0.0.1 mgr:info | grep 'Maximum number'
Maximum number of file descriptors: 1024

Change SQUID_MAXFD and try again

$ sudo sed -i 's/SQUID_MAXFD=1024/SQUID_MAXFD=65536/' /etc/default/squid
$ grep MAX /etc/default/squid·
SQUID_MAXFD=65536
$ sudo stop squid
squid stop/waiting
$ sudo start squid
squid start/running, process 2758
$ squidclient -p 3128 -l 127.0.0.1 -h 127.0.0.1 mgr:info | grep 'Maximum number'
Maximum number of file descriptors: 1024

Apply the patch (attached) and retry:
-

$ sudo vi /etc/init/squid.conf
[ patch ]
$ sudo status squid
squid stop/waiting
$ sudo start squid
squid start/running, process 2794
$ squidclient -p 3128 -l 127.0.0.1 -h 127.0.0.1 mgr:info | grep 'Maximum number'
Maximum number of file descriptors: 65536

That's more like it!

Note: LP#573853 was affecting me as well so I'm also running squid on
Lucid with this patch applied as well.

The latest Ubuntu patches (including a dovecot update) on feb 8, 2011 caused my
mail delivery to stop working.
The logging filled with messages like

dovecot: deliver(uuu): file_dotlock_create(/var/mail/uuu) failed: Permission
denied (euid=1000(uuu) egid=1000(uuu) missing +w perm: /var/mail) (set
mail_privileged_group=mail)
dovecot: deliver(uuu): msgid=: save failed to INBOX: Internal error
occurred. Refer to server log for more inform

It turns out that locking is NOT available with the deliver option
http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailLocation/Mbox#Locking
and that the update caused two lines to be appended to /etc/postfix/main.cf

Fortunately, I had this file under RCS, so that I could catch this.
RCS file: RCS/main.cf,v
retrieving revision 1.3
diff -r1.3 main.cf
59a60,61
 home_mailbox = Maildir/
 mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -c
 /etc/dovecot/conf.d/01-dovecot-postfix.conf -n -m ${EXTENSION}

How can I make sure that coming upgrades don't get my mail stopped again ?
Note that I need to have the files in /var/mail, because of another bug:

[Bug 716659] [NEW] Root filesystem goes Read only after installing multipath-tools on Lucid

2011-02-10 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: multipath-tools

Installing either multipath-tools-boot or multipath-tools causes the
root partition to go 'Read onlyl'. System is then unable to reboot.
The only way to recover system is to boot in rescue mode and un-install
multipath-tools.

The install of multipath-tools caused a segmentation fault. The
following was done with the PPA at: http://ppa.launchpad.net/serge-
hallyn/multipath-backport/ubuntu/. However, this same issue happens
with the multipath-tools package that ships with Lucid.

[Bug 716767] [NEW] clamav-daemon does not start because of Malformed database daily.cvd

2011-02-10 Thread Nils Toedtmann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: clamav

Tonight, two independent clamav-daemon installation died after clamav-
freshclam updated daily.cvd from 12660 to 12662. This currently stops
two MTAs from working.

 * Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS 32bit, fully updated

Another freshclam run updates daily.cvd further to 12663, but the issue
is the same.

When i remove /var/lib/clamav/daily.cvd i can start clamav-daemon again,
but i understand that it it then it only runs on the outdated main.cld
from 2010/11/14.

How do i revert to working daily.cvd ver. 12660?

OK, they published daily.cvd 12664 which works now, clamav-daemon starts

Seems to have been an upstream problem at ClamAV which they fixed.

[Bug 716860] [NEW] zenmap.desktop and zenmap-root.desktop have errors

2011-02-10 Thread Bremm
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nmap

In these files:

/usr/share/applications/zenmap.desktop
/usr/share/applications/zenmap-root.desktop

Almost all paths are wrong. For example, in zenmap-root.desktop:

TryExec=/build/buildd/nmap-5.21/debian/tmp/usr/share/zenmap/su-to-zenmap.sh
Exec=/build/buildd/nmap-5.21/debian/tmp/usr/share/zenmap/su-to-zenmap.sh %F
Icon=/build/buildd/nmap-5.21/debian/tmp/usr/share/zenmap/pixmaps/zenmap.png

They should be in fact:

TryExec=usr/share/zenmap/su-to-zenmap.sh
Exec=/usr/share/zenmap/su-to-zenmap.sh %F
Icon=/usr/share/zenmap/pixmaps/zenmap.png

At zenmap.desktop, only the icon path is wrong, so we just need to take
off the /build/buildd/nmap-5.21/debian/tmp part.

I did the modifications by myself and these .desktop files are 100%
functional.

 A recent dbus update cause a crash of my Host OS.It was a post install
 script of dbus which ultimately brought everything down.

 Now I have to basically format the host OS.My cause of concern are the
 virtual machines which were running on it when the environment was
 stable.Which were in separate LVM partitions.

 Some thing like

 /dev/virtualization/vm1
 /dev/virtualization/vm2
 /dev/virtualization/vm3
 /dev/virtualization/vm4
 If some one has experienced recovery of this sort in past let me know
 what did they do to get things back. All my Virtual Machines were on
 separate partition and in same VolumeGroup this volume group was on
 Host OS. Will formatting of HOST os clear the Virtual Machines also in
 my situation or just be re installing the host and importing the
 Virtual Machines via a tool such as virt-manager I will be able to get
 them back.

 Before your reinstall, dump the configuration of your virtual machines like
 this:
 $ virsh dumpxml vm1  vm1.xml
 After reinstall, redefine the machines
 $ virsh define vm1.xml

 It's that simple, but of course you have to leave your LVM volumes in place
 and make sure your host has the same network interfaces (as defined in the
 xml).

Not possible because the host OS where I was getting this problem I
was not even able to login.
So what I did is a fresh install and copied the xml files from a
backup I had on a USB is that not the correct way to do?
I just noticed I am unable to connect to guest OS after this i.e. when
the host OS reboots and then I immedialtely do an SSH to the guest
from any machine within my network I am able to do so but after 5-10
minutes if I again do an ssh to the same guest then I get host not
found error.

Hi.

Check the IP address in the guest machine.

Do you got static IP?
Is there any dhclient process running?

Description: proxy for DNS queries

 dnsproxy forwards DNS queries to two previously configured nameservers:

 one for authoritative queries and another for recursive queries.

 The received answers are sent back to the client unchanged.

 No local caching is done.

 .

 Primary motivation for this project was the need to replace Bind servers with

 djbdns in an ISP environment. These servers get recursive queries from

 customers and authoritative queries from outside at the same IP address.

 Now it is possible to run dnscache and tinydns on the same machine with

 queries dispatched by dnsproxy.

 .

 Another possible scenario is a firewall where proxy queries should be

 forwarded to the real server in a DMZ.

How to install or mount an appliance?

2011-02-10 Thread Diego Xirinachs
Dear List,

I have a File server running ubuntu server 10.04 LTS, and I was running and
OpenFire server (jabber messenger service) on top of a windows server
machine. Openfire is crashing a lot so I decided to go a different way and
try a new software, then I found an appliance called ejabberd (you can find
it HERE http://www.turnkeylinux.org/ejabberd)

What I want to do is to mount that virtual appliance on my file server, so I
dont have to mess around installing everything needed to run the jabber
messenger.

How can I mount the appliance if the server is command line only?

I have never done this kind of stuff so I am a little lost.

I guess I would have to install a virtual machine that can handle the
appliance of course, but the one I know (VirtualBox) I think its GUI only.

One last thing: Can I make ejabberd users to authenticate against Active
Directory?

Any light on this will be greatly appreciated
