Why/how could bug #531912 make my connections disconnect ?
Using another ssh client (fx putty) does not disconnect.

[Bug 713646] Re: IPv6 functionality in ip_ plugin assumse #!/bin/sh being bash

2011-02-12 Thread Daniel Hahler
The proper fix would be to remove the bashism function, and define the
function as:
  iptables() {
  /sbin/ip6tables $@
  }

Apart from that, I cannot see why it uses eval here - the original suggestion
in ticket #439 by jodal did not do so.
I will bring this up in the upstream tracker, but I cannot login there
currently.

2011-02-12 Thread Charlie Kravetz
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error caused by a corrupted
archive. Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your
package cache, in a terminal ( Applications - Accessories - Terminal )
:

  sudo cp /usr/share/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf
  sudo dpkg --configure -a

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue. If so please set the bug's status to Invalid. Thanks in advance!

Attaching the backport to lucid's upstart job file as a debdiff (I was

[Bug 635703] [NEW] No sound from virtual machines

2011-02-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: virt-manager

This is i386 host (pre-installed with feisty, subsequently upgraded through
Lucid).
I'm using KVM with libvirt/virt-manager.

I've got a multitude of VM's but I guess the easiest to test is a fresh
Lucid installation updated to current packages.

I've tested both the ac97 and es1370 virtual sound card. But no sound
from the guest is being played by the host. The host can play sound
from rhythmbox.

[Bug 603363] Re: sshd never stops, prevents umount of /usr partition

2011-02-12 Thread Clint Byrum
** Description changed:

Under Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid, sshd is an upstart job controlled by
/etc/init/ssh.conf This file provides for start and stop as follows:

  start on filesystem
  stop on runlevel S

At shutdown or reboot, therefore, sshd is not stopped.

Since sshd is in /usr/sbin/sshd and also accesses lib files in /usr/lib
  this means that

  /etc/rc0.d/S40umountfs

cannot successfully umount /usr at shutdown when /usr is on its own
  partition.

This definitely leads to umount reporting errors in the shutdown console
  messages.

It may also lead to fsck running on reboot and problems with mountall...
I can't say for certain yet as I am also having problems umounting /var,
possibly due to a power failure, which is what led me to notice and
  investigate these messages.

My guess is that when sshd was a System V init process, it was killed by
the killall5 process in /etc/rc0.d/S20sendsigs. Under Lucid sshd has
been made an upstart job and as such is exempt from the killall5 and so
  needs to be stopped explicitly.

I admit I am by no means an expert on upstart or sshd, but the fix
appears to me to be to modify /etc/init/ssh.conf to read

  stop on runlevel [!2345]

  ProblemType: Bug
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04
  Package: openssh-server 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu4

  SourcePackage: openssh
+
+ == SRU Report ==
+
+ === Impact / Justification ===
+
+ This bug can lead to filesystem corruption if /usr is on a separate
+ filesystem or if sshd isn't restarted on libc6 upgrade (which is almost
+ guaranteed due to bug #531912)
+
+ === Dev fix ===
+
+ This was fixed in the dev branch by making sshd stop on runlevel
+ [!2345], which is fairly standard for network services.
+
+ === Patch ===
+
+ See attached debdiff
+
+ === TEST CASE: ===
+
+ On a lucid system with all updates applied
+ 1. sudo apt-get install openssh-server
+ 2. verify it is started and running with 'sudo status ssh'
+ 3. sudo apt-get install --reinstall libc6
+ 4. If portmap is installed, Manually stop the portmap daemon which has a
similar problem (sudo stop portmap)
+ 5. upon reboot, look in dmesg for the word 'Orphaned'
+ 6. upgrade system and repeat steps 3-5, you should not see Orphaned anymore
+
+ === REGRESSION POTENTIAL ===
+
+ Its possible that people expect sshd to still be reachable until the
+ network is shutdown, which is fairly late in the shutdown process.

[Bug 717837] [NEW] sshd fails to restart after /dev/null is changed to regular file

2011-02-12 Thread De Cora
Public bug reported:

/dev/null got changed from a character device to a regular file. the
method by which this happened is unknown.

On reboot, sshd failed to start up.

There is a script in /etc/init.d/ssh that dies if /dev/null is not a
character device. If you try to start sshd from the command line it
reports 'no such device' in the logfile.

This makes you unable to access your server remotely.

[Bug 716310] Re: ssh connections disconnects automatically

2011-02-12 Thread Clint Byrum
Oops, I also meant to ask you to cat the /var/run/sshd.pid to make sure
it is in fact the same as the one in status.

My suspicion is/was that the upstart managed sshd is conflicting with a
/etc/init.d/ssh managed sshd. On second thought I'm not so sure.

Can you try running an sshd in debug mode on an alternate port on the
server?

/usr/sbin/sshd -dd -p

Then connect to it with

ssh -p affected_host

and paste the output of those, noting when the disconnection happens?

[Bug 717837] Re: sshd fails to restart after /dev/null is changed to regular file

2011-02-12 Thread Dave Gilbert
/dev/null must always be the correct character device; if it's a file
then it's perfectly reasonable for things to fail.

Now, it shouldn't have changed to a file - it's possible you hit bug 387189
is there a /dev/null.1 which is the original character device?

[Bug 535583] Re: Excessive logging by apcsmart program

2011-02-12 Thread Lupe Christoph
Of course after a reboot, I forgot to stop nut and start apcsmart
with debugging. :-( So when the problem reoccurred, I didn't get the
debug output.

But I ran strace of the apcsmart process, you might be able to
use that instead.

write(4, Y, 1)= -1 EIO (Input/output error)
sendto(3, 27Feb 13 00:18:03 apcsmart[321..., 87, MSG_NOSIGNAL, NULL, 0) = 87

select(7, [4 5 6], NULL, NULL, {1, 999845}) = 1 (in [4], left {1, 999843})

I have no idea why there is an IO error on the serial port. When I
restart apcsmart, it works OK. But it does not seem to handle the
EIO, it just goes on and on looking for input on /dev/ttyS2 and
/var/run/nut/apcsmart-ups (on two FDs), but then ignores the input
available on /dev/ttyS2.

The 'Y' command tells the UPS to enter smart mode. I can imagine this
is the normal mode of operation, and apcsmart has been thrown off track
and tries to re-engage, but the code that is supposed to do this is
faulty. Or maybe the UPS has dropped the connection. When I unplug the
cable, the trace is similar but different:

That fixed it.

(Don't you have checksums for packages in the headers?)

it would not recognize /dev/sd[ab][12], but could only recognize
 /dev/sd[ab] (the whole disk).

I have been bitten by this behaviour several times already, through using
different versions of Ubuntu.

Lots of times I use Ubuntu with a software raid (using md device that is)
for the boot system, this problem seem to occur.

The bug report that most helped me was

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/27037/

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/27037/Read it
through the end, though, I managed to find a workaround by forcing the right
combinations of partitions into md devices by setting them in mdadm.conf.
This might not work for all setups though.

virtual machines which were running on it when the environment was
stable.Which were in separate LVM partitions.

 Some thing like

 /dev/virtualization/vm1
 /dev/virtualization/vm2
 /dev/virtualization/vm3
 /dev/virtualization/vm4
If some one has experienced recovery of this sort in past let me know
what did they do to get things back. All my Virtual Machines were on
separate partition and in same VolumeGroup this volume group was on
Host OS. Will formatting of HOST os clear the Virtual Machines also in
my situation or just be re installing the host and importing the
Virtual Machines via a tool such as virt-manager I will be able to get
 them back.

It depends, if the VG is stored on the same disk and you reinstall you might
indeed destroy the VMs. Please don't proceed until you're sure of what
 you're doing

Well I can not escape from restoring the production environment Ahmed.

How ever by the time of writing this message I have restored every thing.
I am sharing it here might help some one who are into similar mess.

When you insert the Ubuntu CD it will ask you for partitioning schemes
chose the guided partitioning scheme what you have to make sure is
not to format the volume group on which all the virtual machines
reside.

While creating these guests their locations were
/etc/libvirt/qemu/*.xml

To restore the Virtual Machine go to the /etc/libvirt/ directory of
USB backup and which ever file you find missing on the fresh install
copy it after you have copied them

virsh define /path/to/vm.xml to define that VM in new environment (you
will see the VM might run without this but it is
advisable to do above thing)
My problem was a bit more difficult as the back I had was even buggy
so the restoration did not went very smooth. When you are restoring
the VMs then I noticed some how permissions andsoftlinks had
broken.

Once you have finished copying the virtual machines permissions of
xml files in
/etc/libvirt/qemu/
should be changed to 644 any other file if you see has permission 777
needs to be 644 but the
same does not applies to directories.

When this was not there I noticed surprisingly the ssh connections to
the VMs after copying the respective XML files back were dropping.By
the time I wrote down this it was confirmed the backup I had
permissions problem.

Files in /etc/libvirt/qemu/*.xml on backup had permissions 777

where in the correct permissions should be 700 for these XMLs.
I want to mention 2 links if some comes across this thread should help them

https://www.redhat.com/archives/virt-tools-list/2011-February/msg00074.html

by changing the above xml files permission I observed our SSH
connection drop problem also got resolved.
How ever due to a DNS resolution failure the DomU social was failing
to restart many teams after each reboot of Dom0.So I had to manually
login and start it.
By now I have successfully restored all the environment.
