[Bug 444479] Re: missing apparmor access rule

2011-02-22 Thread ITCons
I am also not able to start the mysql process successfully, even after
adding the line /sys/devices/system/cpu/ r, to
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld. Did an update of packages apt-get
install mysql-client mysql-client-5.1 mysql-client-core-5.1 on ubuntu
lucid. After this, when starting mysql with upstart script: service
mysql start it just hangs, ps -e | grep my shows no processes. This
happens when apparmor is running and when it is not, though settings
(checked from a working mysql database server) seem to be correct.
Something in the context/apparmor/security must be missing... any ideas?
Could I remove profiles from apparmor to see if this is related without
risking a server reboot?

Apparmor status shows:

/etc/init.d/apparmor status
apparmor module is loaded.
6 profiles are loaded.
6 profiles are in enforce mode.
   /sbin/dhclient3
   /usr/bin/freshclam
   /usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm-dhcp-client.action
   /usr/lib/connman/scripts/dhclient-script
   /usr/sbin/mysqld
   /usr/sbin/tcpdump
0 profiles are in complain mode.
1 processes have profiles defined.
1 processes are in enforce mode :
   /usr/bin/freshclam (1706)
0 processes are in complain mode.
0 processes are unconfined but have a profile defined.

[Bug 444479] Re: missing apparmor access rule

2011-02-22 Thread ITCons
This solved my problem on Ubuntu Lucid:

apt-get remove --purge mysql-server mysql-common mysql-client

apt-get install mysql-server

After purging and installing the packages, mysql started fine. Seems it
was mysql-related.

[Bug 607039] Re: NFS automount failover doesn't work

2011-02-22 Thread Dern
The problem does not appear on Fedora using autofs 5.0.5 so it looks
like this is an Ubuntu specific bug.

Please note that the description for this bug report is misleading as
autofs doesn't do failover (as far as I know). However it is supposed
to be able to automaticaly choose an available server from a list of
replicated servers at mount time.

2011-02-22 Thread Dern
I changed the title of this bug report from

   NFS automount failover doesn't work
to
NFS automount using replicated servers doesn't work

as I believe it better reflects the problem and saying 'failover' in
combination with may put of the maintainers as autofs isn't supposed to
do real faillover (yet. correct me if I'm wrong).

Anyway, just trying to increase the chances of somebody actually
noticing this bug report and doing something about it :-)

[Bug 722698] Re: package amavisd-new-postfix 1:2.6.4-1ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-02-22 Thread Andres Rodriguez
Hi!

Thank you for reporting bugs and trying to make Ubuntu better.

Now, according to the attached logs the failure seems to be because of
this:

Starting amavisd: head: cannot open `/etc/mailname' for reading: No such file
or directory
The value of variable $myhostname is randallj-desktop, but should have been
a fully qualified domain name; perhaps uname(3) did not provide such.
You must explicitly assign a FQDN of this host to variable $myhostname
in /etc/amavis/conf.d/05-node_id, or fix what uname(3) provides as a host's
  network name!
(failed).

Have you tried doing what the explanation indicates? If so, has this
fixed the problem? If not, could you please follow indicates you and try
to start/restart amavisd again.

Please, let us know the results.

For now, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete until the information
requested is provided.

qemu-kvm no longer ships an arm emulator in natty. So if I understand

[Bug 720638] Re: snmpd crashes with segfault (libnetsnmpmibs.so.15.1.2)

2011-02-22 Thread Andreas
I am seeing the same segfault on my lucid boxes, config file attached
with sensitive information removed. None of the extended checks are
actually being done on the machines that are crashing, as the first
hosts we upgraded to lucid do not do anything that complex -- run
lighttpd and that is all. They do push 200Mbps of traffic fairly
constantly, but load is always below 1.0.

[Bug 723330] [NEW] rename() function didn't work with /tmp dir

2011-02-22 Thread Djalma Oliveira
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: php5

I got a error message trying rename a dir from DOCUMENT_ROOT to /tmp/
dir.

Example:
 rename(myfolder/, /tmp/myfolder/);

return this Fatal error message ( yes, it talk about copy() function but
I called rename() ):

The first argument to copy() function cannot be a directory.

But,
 rename(myfolder/, myNEWfolder/);

it works fine inside the same DOCUMENT_ROOT path.

[Bug 695857] Re: ssl protection not default for sensitive packages

2011-02-22 Thread janl
I have tried to come up with some very good solutions, but it appears
that we must lay (another) burden on packagers to realize this.

1) If an authenticating web app foo is installed and SSL is not
installed then secure by default tells us that the user should see a
splash page explaining that it would be insecure to not use SSL but that
if you read README.NOSSL in the package then there are instructions to
enable the unencrypted access anyway. OR there is a high prioryty
quiestion to the admin during installation that results in doing the
right thing. The default should be to be secure IMHO. I guess dpkg-
reconfigure should re-ask that question and set things up according to
the answer.

2) 1) takes care of 2) as well

3) Not sure what that means in terms of interaction with the admin

4) If SSL is installed then non-ssl access to the app should result in a
redirect to the SSL url according to the principle of least surprise,
and possebly also bug #1.

In apache there is a number of ways to case configuration based on the
presence of modules and so on. For ther httpds I don't know...

Regards,
  Nicolai

USB devices become available with very dangerous chown -R of
/dev/devices/...usb

Dangerous edits, as per other filed bugs, to
/etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/libvirt-qemu do not work.

In Virtual machine manager, and in virsh, security model is not
enabled / available / listed. No security is listed in the domain XML
file.

Changing /etc/apparamor/abstractions/libvirtd does not work.

Rebooting dozens of times does not work.

This is in many ways the opposite of bug #588369.

I am filing as a bug because all the utilities and their docs mention
apparmor, but fail completely and _silently_ when this problem occurs,
and there is not even howto assistance. For example, the virtual
manager GUI leaves the security model under overview as unselectable,
and leaves the user completely in the dark.

qemu.conf has the line:
  # security_driver = selinux

The only file in /etc/apparmor.d/libvirt is the TEMPLATE file. No UUID-
suffixed files exist.

[Bug 721320] Re: DKIM-related failures should not end up in the panic log

2011-02-22 Thread ward
1. Better explanation of the issue and how it is affecting the package
in Ubuntu.

The debian bug report explains it quite nicely, but let me summarize...

Without this patch, the Exim4 package on Lucid will generate warnings
like this

2010-01-31 21:41:16 1Nbga6-0005ZL-FH DKIM: Error while running this
message through validation, disabling signature verification.

in /var/log/exim4/paniclog.

These are not 'real' errors, they are just warnings. They can not be
disabled. They do not belong in the paniclog, which should always be
empty.

2. Provide a step-by-step to be able to reproduce this bug.

Run a semi-busy mailserver on Lucid, and you will collect these warnings
in your paniclog - on one of our machines, I'm seeing a couple a day on
an average mail volume of 100,000 accepted messages.

The patch is trivial, it's been applied to the Debian package, and it
would be really nice to not have to manually patch Exim4 on Lucid for
this.

Fortunately Daniel Berrange just sent a patch upstream for this bug.
I've extracted the core of what we need, and added it to the tree linked
to this bug. The package I built worked!

The complete patch from Daniel will go into the 0.8.7 merge. Then the
smaller patch which is in the linked tree here can go into lucid and
maverick for SRU.

[Bug 723480] [NEW] php5-fpm uses too high value for pm.max_children by default

2011-02-22 Thread Marco Romeny
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: php5-fpm

The defaults in the file /etc/php5/fpm/pool.d/www.conf states a pm.max_children
count of 50. Combined with php5's new max_memory default 128M, means a default
installation would expect some 6GB of memory, something I'd love to run my
cloud webserver off, but I think few do. Using php5-fpm-5.3.3-1ubuntu9.3 on
Ubuntu 10.10
pm.max_children should probably be something like 4, with a note in the
comments to increase if memory allows.

[Bug 723480] Re: php5-fpm uses too high value for pm.max_children by default

2011-02-22 Thread Marco Romeny
I am thinking that there will be many more virtual servers running in
the wild very soon rather than physical servers, and I have a hunch that
a lot of them are configured as 1Gb or even 512Mb -- if the defaults
are too high, it results in a server that crashes after some time (it
took mine about a day to crash) and at least for me it was not apparent
where to find the error. I know, I should have done the math, but I
somehow thought the defaults would be pre-calculated to fit a really
small machine. In fact, one of my first errors I did, was to increase
the limit to 100 children under that very assumption, and it definitely
maxed my server out. It might even have been so that if I hadn't done
that error I would have rebooted the server once a week and never found
the problem.

I could blame this on php too: before 5.2.0 max_memory was 8Mb default,
5.2.0 it became 16Mb and then recently it jumped to 128Mb. That's a
large step to take.

Now, I'm not sure if 128Mb for a php process is really necessary
(although I know that wordpress loves memory), but in any case, I rather
have a underutilized server by default than a server that slowly dives
into dementia by default.

I even think 4 might be too many as the max_children if the minimum
requirements for ubuntu server is listed at 256Mb. That number pretty
much says you can run most stuff comfortably with 512Mb

As for if it's better to have many concurrent serving php instances vs a
lot of memory allocated to each instance is probably depending an the
application.

[Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh

2011-02-22 Thread gorism
I just updated to the openssh-server_5.3p1-3ubuntu5 package for a Lucid
instance, and now I can't get SSH to start. Or, rather, I'm running
into what Jan mentioned above, with the respawning/terminating loop that
eventually results in init deciding that SSH isn't going to start, and
giving up. Something like:

init: ssh main process (430) terminated with status 255
init: ssh main process ended, respawning
init: ssh main process (449) terminated with status 255
init: ssh main process ended, respawning
init: ssh main process (456) terminated with status 255
init: ssh main process ended, respawning
...
init: ssh main process (468) terminated with status 255
init: ssh respawning too fast, stopped

The real trouble here is, this is an EC2 instance that was just
restarted, so now I have no means by which I can get on that machine to
do any additional troubleshooting or ultimately fix this. But this was
not caused by me executing an /etc/init.d/ssh stop, so I don't think
this is bug #531912.

So my question would be what now? Downgrade upstart (I just upgraded to
0.6.5-8)? Downgrade openssh-server (I just upgraded to openssh-
server_5.3.01-3ubuntu5? Is there something I can do to workaround this?
My existing instance my be lost, but what will keep me from running into
this again if I build a new EC2 instance with the same package versions?

[Bug 531912] Re: /etc/init.d/ssh seems to work, but actually upstart is used.

2011-02-22 Thread Jamie Jamison
OK, if /etc/init/ssh doesn't fully replicate the functionality of the
/etc/init.d/ssh script to include properly setting up chrooted
environments and properly handling libc6 updates then what benefit does
it provide users? Why, if you can't get Upstart to provide the same
functionality as the /etc/init.d startup script, move control of sshd
over to Upstart anyways? Again, what does it do for the users?

At least the fix for this bit of Upstart badness is easy enough, just
remove /etc/init/ssh and start sshd with the script in init.d. Perhaps
it's not as architecturally elegant as Upstart is supposed to be, but at
least we all know that it works.

If you restarted the instance and this is happening, its definitely not
bug #531912, as that one still results in an sshd that works on bootup.

If this is an EBS root instance, can you snapshot it and mount it from
another instance? If so, you should be able to view the contents
of /var/log and paste any errors from sshd. If you can't find anything
there, you can mount the volume r/w and add 'console output'
to /etc/init/ssh.conf and then check the console output when it fails to
start up.

If its fully instance store, I'm not sure there's much you can do though
EC2 experts may have some tricks.

No! For my Tomcat6 the webapp dir is in /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/ If
someone puts a .war file in it, it gets deployed. If it is not there
 just create it.
