[Bug 1096125] Re: virsh create-snapshot fails

2013-01-07 Thread Serge Hallyn
I don't believe this is due to apparmor. However there certainly is an
apparmor bug, as running virsh snapshot-create-as causes the
/etc/apparmor.d/libvirt/test1-uuid.files entry for
/var/lib/libvirt/images/test1.img to be replaced by one for

/var/lib/libvirt/images/test1.snapshot1

[Bug 1096984] [NEW] Wrong device for the / mount point

2013-01-07 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Public bug reported:

quantal
lxc 0.8.0~rc1-4ubuntu39
kernel 3.5.0-21-generic
using lvm on the host

I came back from holidays and found this problem. Not sure if it's related to a
recent update of the system, I was updating it regularly in the past 3 weeks I
was away but I haven't tried any LXC creation during that time, until today.

If I create a container with the following command:

lxc-create -n precise-test -t ubuntu -- -b andreas -r precise

Then start it and login, the device for / is incorrect:

andreas@precise-test:~$ mount
/dev/mapper/vg0-var on / type ext4 (rw)

That device does not exist:
andreas@precise-test:~$ ls -la /dev/mapper
ls: cannot access /dev/mapper: No such file or directory
andreas@precise-test:~$

It's in fact my external device for the /var mount point. On the host:
root@nsn7:~# mount|grep /var
/dev/mapper/vg0-var on /var type ext4 (rw)
/dev/mapper/vg0-postgresql on /var/lib/postgresql type ext4 (rw)
/dev/mapper/vg0-virt on /var/lib/libvirt/images type ext4 (rw)

If I create the container with this command, however:
lxc-create -n precise-test -t ubuntu -B lvm --vgname vg0 --lvname
lxc-precise-test -- -b andreas -r precise

Then it works:
andreas@precise-test:~$ mount
/dev/dm-16 on / type ext4 (rw)

The consequence I saw so far is that installing or updating or installing
grub-pc inside the container breaks, because it can't find the device where the
root filesystem is mounted from:
2013-01-07 16:15:07,835 unit:mysql/1: hook.output INFO: Setting up grub-pc
(1.99-21ubuntu3.7) ...

2013-01-07 16:15:08,293 unit:mysql/1: hook.output INFO: /usr/sbin/grub-
probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?).

2013-01-07 16:15:08,500 unit:mysql/1: hook.output INFO: dpkg: error processing
grub-pc (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

(example above from a juju deploy command)

The default precise container does not have grub-pc installed, so
something else must be pulling it in (maybe the mysql charm from my
example).

[Bug 1096984] Re: Wrong device for the / mount point

2013-01-07 Thread Serge Hallyn
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1060404 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1060404

Thanks for filing this bug.

I believe the grub part of this bug is covered in bug 1060404 (which is
not fixed in Precise).

I don't believe the first part should be deemed a bug. lxc is not
actually involved, and even without containers there is absolutely no
guarantee that any results in 'mount' will be paths which are currently
accessible to you. Moreover, note that if mount were returning a valid
path (and grub succeeded in installing itself there) you would be
destroying the grub install for the host :)

Therefore grub-install simply needs to not run in the container.

[Bug 1097032] [NEW] Build squid3 with –enable-ssl option by default

2013-01-07 Thread Paul Boot
Public bug reported:

Since squid3 does an excellent job in proxying and/or terminating HTTPS

[Bug 1097050] [NEW] d-root ipv4 has changed. Update db.root to show this

2013-01-07 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

According to http://www.root-servers.org/ and http://d.root-
servers.org/renumber.html the D.Root server has changed its ipv4. I
quote the message below

D-Root is Changing its IPv4 Address on 3 January 2013
This is advance notice that there is a scheduled change to the IPv4 address for
one of the authorities listed for the DNS root zone and the .ARPA TLD. The
change is to D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET, which is administered by the University of
Maryland.

The new IPv4 address for this authority is 199.7.91.13

the /etc/bind/db.root file in bind needs to be changed to reflect this.

34c34
 D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. 360 A 128.8.10.90
---
 D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. 360 A 199.7.91.13

The notice also states that the old ip will only be available for at
least 6 months so this change should probably be applied before then.

[Bug 1097050] Re: d-root ipv4 has changed. Update db.root to show this

2013-01-07 Thread Mark
The official new zone file can be found at
ftp://ftp.internic.net/domain/named.root and the diff to the current
version is as follows.

12,13c12,13
 ; last update:Jun 17, 2010
; related version of root zone: 2010061700
---
 ; last update:Jan 3, 2013

 D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. 360 A 128.8.10.90
---
 D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. 360 A 199.7.91.13
 D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET.360    2001:500:2D::D

The notice says the ipv6 address is staying the same so apparently it was
supposed to be in bind all along but for some reason, never was.

[Bug 1090593] Re: D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET changing January 3rd 2013

2013-01-07 Thread Mark
In response to Robie, As far as i'm aware, a recursive server will pick
a random root name server to fetch the list of root name servers from.
If this happens to be the D root server old ip is offline, it'll stall
briefly while trying to connect to it. Granted it's only a once off and
a 1/13 chance of happening. Considering it's such an easy patch, no
reason not to apply it though.

[Bug 1090593] Re: D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET changing January 3rd 2013

2013-01-07 Thread Robie Basak
Considering it's such an easy patch, no reason not to apply it though.

For the development release, it adds extra work to whoever does merges
in the future, and introduces the risk of an accidental regression if
not everything through to upstream has updated before Ubuntu. But if you
get the change in Debian, then Ubuntu will in time merge it without any
further ado.

To update stable releases, Even the simplest of changes can cause
unexpected regressions due to lurking problems. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

I'm reluctant to push for this unless a clear consensus is reached,
somebody points out exactly what we've done in the past, or an
experienced Ubuntu developer tells me otherwise. I think the best place
to seek consensus on this is the ubuntu-server mailing list. If others
agree that the change is worth it, then, as you say, it's trivial to
actually do and I'd be happy to see it through.

Otherwise, this will get fixed in time as the change filters through
from upstream. This seems to me to be the path of least resistance,
especially because I don't think changing it earlier will result in any
real practical benefit. Anyone who cares enough is presumably already
running configuration management and can just change the conffile
anyway.

[Bug 1045616] Re: DHCP server handing out DNS server addresses but DHCP client does not write these to resolv.conf

2013-01-07 Thread David T
I think bug #1000244 is just describing the same issue in another way
for sure. I'd be happy to work with someone with commit privileges in a
virtual machine virgin install in my server cluster to reproduce the
issue.

I'm not savvy enough to try and determine if the problem comes from:
resolvconf, default config in network stack for ubuntu, or some
interaction when bind gets installed from the repo. I just know how to
hard/code fix and work around the issue.

IMHO, it definitely needs to be permanently fixed because whatever
happens after a default install or upgrade, DNS resolution should just
work, not require changes to get it working.

FYI I was installing a centos 6.x system, and saw a similar interaction
which would lead me towards a resolvconf or bind interaction.

[Bug 1028718] Re: nova volumes are inappropriately clingy for ceph

2013-01-07 Thread John Griffith
This currently is by design, your case of an HA solution makes sense and
it would be a good add (especially with external storage devices such as
Ceph). If there was an feature request category this would be a
perfect candidate, but alas :(

I'll see about getting a blue-print to address this.

Re: Framebuffers, plymouth, upstart and server installs.

2013-01-07 Thread Sander Smeenk
Quoting Sander Smeenk (ssme...@freshdot.net):

I'd like to propose the (re)introduction of a special '-server' kernel
which has no framebuffers enabled? Some mechanism to tune GRUB into
verbose, 80x24 text mode when installed on a Server setup? Implement
 'tee(1)' functionality in Upstart perhaps?

 Is any of this discussable?

Anyone?

This affects me as well. Whenever a /et/networking/interfaces is wrong or
an /etc/fdisk is wrong, plymouth gets in the way and makes it harder to fix
the problem.

Id be happy to help with testing or what little I know of packaging.

 Basically it boils down to quotes from the above shown threads;

In fact, and i really, *really* don't mean to insult any one involved in
ubuntu-server development, but i kind-of wonder if the people putting
all this hard work in ubuntu-server are actually using ubuntu-server on a
daily basis on more than one system like a lot of sysadmins like myself
 do.

Me and my team manage roughly 200 servers running Ubuntu. We encounter
situations where we have old CRT monitors, shady KVM-switches and crappy
ILOM/ELOM/DRAC java implementations with which we have to manage our
servers. Situations where (we/the customer) botched something up which
 makes the bootprocess fail, etc.

Framebuffers, or rather 'special video modes', are somewhat unstable on
server hardware and/or plain right incompatible with shady KVM
implementations which are, unfortunately, commonly used in colocated
 environments.

What i really want to know is 'why' all this is necessary on server
installs ad what we / i can do to get a clearer view on what is
 actually going on during boot.

The path Ubuntu Server followed from Ubuntu Desktop is to depend on
framebuffers and upstart during boot and to switch off the GRUB menu
 by default.

I whole-heartedly agree with every sentiment!

Also, there are related issues when running ubuntu-server as a VM on kvm
(or technically, the minimal virtual install version). I tend to use serial
consoles for my vm's, so that I can access them via ssh, and it's a pain to
get boot output sent to the serial console and not the vnc consoles...

Just wanted to add that pet peeve to the above list as it's related...

We want on our servers debug output on screen. There is absolutly no reason
for plymouth imho.

thx

Ubuntu10: clnt_create rpc program not registered

2013-01-07 Thread Lorenzo Milesi
Hi.
I'm trying to mount an old Seagate BlackArmor using NFS.
I have a Debian 5 system correctly mounting the share, but on my newly
installed Ubuntu 10.04 I cannot.

if I run
showmount -e 192.168.1.179
I get
clnt_create rpc program not registered

if I try to directly mount the share using the same command working on debian I
get
mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified

Package nfs-common is installed, portmap is running, what else could be wrong?
thanks

 Anyone?

The worst one here is the fact that during bootup fsck's, there is no longer
any
progress bar showing status. No big deal for a small single disk system but If
your
server has a multi-terabyte drive array, fscks can take hours to complete and
you
are stuck staring at a blinking cursor with no idea how much longer it will
take or
if the system is even hung. Since fscks might be run only every few months,
many
people didn't even know about this until the worst possible time (power outage,
etc.)

It appears the cause is not exactly plymouth, but rather since Karmic the
SystemV
init was replaced with upstart, which is (mostly) SysV compatible. If you ls
-l /etc/init.d
you will see a lot of symlinks in there, all pointing to /lib/init/upstart-job.
 Those used
to be SysV init scripts; they have been converted to upstart jobs.

Plymouth is what upstart talks to in order to send output to stdout (the
monitor), and
it requires full control over the console during bootup and shutdown. Any job
output
does not go to the old console anymore - it needs to go through plymouth.

This is why if you hack plymouth out of your system, you will notice that you
only
see output from the old SysV scripts still living in /etc/init.d - but you will
see no output
for jobs that have been converted to upstart. Eventually /etc/init.d will be
entirely
upstart symlinks, and everything will go through plymouth. So if you keep
plymouth
off your system… you are going to have an increasingly bad time as more jobs
get
converted to upstart.

Maybe some devs can chime in here but from what I understand, upstart is here
to stay come hell or high water, so any solution is going to have to work best
practice with upstart/plymouth, with no way to get back old behavior. I wish
upstart
had some sort of mechanism to talk through a plain oldschool console too, but
it
appears that this isn't possible?
