[Bug 1236299] [NEW] ssh-agent env variables not set when not using Bourne shell

2013-10-07 Thread Andrew Stevenson
Public bug reported:

When I start an X session (default gnome/unity setup) I find that ssh-
agent is started but the appropriate environment variables
(SSH_AGENT_PID, SSH_AUTH_SOCK) are not set. .xsession-errors contains:

init: ssh-agent pre-start process (1797) terminated with status 127

The problem appears to be in /usr/share/upstart/sessions/ssh-agent.conf.
It evals ssh-agent expecting the output to be valid Bourne shell syntax
however ssh-agent checks (IIUC) the user's shell and output C shell
style code if the user is using a C based shell. I use tcsh and so get
output like 'setenv SSH_AGENT_PID ...' from ssh-agent. This of course
fails to set any environment variables in the Bourne shell script that
the upstart job effectively is.

Luckily ssh-agent has a flag to ask for Bourne shell syntax.

[Bug 1235231] Re: ci-info: eth0 not reliable in latest saucy images

2013-10-07 Thread Scott Moser
So, some more information..
this bug is fixed by doing:
for x in /etc/init/plymouth*; do sudo mv $x $x.disabled; done

after doing so 100% of /dev/console output makes it to the console
(whoohoo!).

that lays this squarely on plymouth.
There is some conversation with slangasek, smoser and utlemming at
http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2013/10/04/%23ubuntu-devel.html#t18:07 .

Steve thinks its not entirely unreasonable to just disable plymouth via
.override files in cloud-images. I think he would suggest that that be
done at the package level and be handled by cloud-init. That wasn't
clear to me though.

Given the above, this is clearly a plymouth bug, its supposed to replay
output that it captured, but it is losing some.

[Bug 1235231] Re: ci-info: eth0 not reliable in latest saucy images

2013-10-07 Thread Scott Moser
** Description changed:

+ During early boot, plymouth captures writes to /dev/console. As I
+ understand it, it is supposed to re-play that content later. Whether or
+ not it intends to is not the issue. In our cloud-images (and in other
+ cases) users may write data to /dev/console that needs to be seen on the
+ other side (ie a serial logger or 'get-console-ouptput' api call).
+
+ See the attached 'my-logger.conf' for an upstart job that simply writes
+ data early in boot to /dev/console. Sometimes data lost is available
+ in /var/log/boot.log, but sometimes it doesn't even seem to make it
+ there.
+
+ Related bugs:

On precise cloud images, I get a console output line like this:

[Bug 1236361] [NEW] need new simple streams based maas-import-ephemerals

2013-10-07 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

As currently packaged in Ubuntu maas does not use the new import-ephemerals
script.
As discussed http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2013/10/07/%23maas.html#t12:46 , this is
pretty important to get in.

The reasons we need this in 13.10 (and thus Ubuntu cloud archive 'tools'
pocket) are:
a.) The current version does not clean up
Because it doesn't delete old versions of the ephemeral images, updates
on the server side will eventually consume all local disk space. The fast path
installer uses ephemeral images, we thus have a larger interest in updating
these images frequently, so installed systems have all applied updates inside.
b.) it fixes security bug 1039513
 c.) I believe it fixes bug 1031582.

[Bug 1235231] Re: plymouth loses output to /dev/console (such as ci-info: messages)

2013-10-07 Thread Scott Moser
** Description changed:

During early boot, plymouth captures writes to /dev/console. As I
understand it, it is supposed to re-play that content later. Whether or
not it intends to is not the issue. In our cloud-images (and in other
cases) users may write data to /dev/console that needs to be seen on the
other side (ie a serial logger or 'get-console-ouptput' api call).

See the attached 'my-logger.conf' for an upstart job that simply writes
data early in boot to /dev/console. Sometimes data lost is available
in /var/log/boot.log, but sometimes it doesn't even seem to make it
- there.
+ there. bug 682831 has an attachment 'myhack-init' that does a similar
+ thing but starts outputting by replacing /sbin/init and then calling
+ /sbin/init itself.

  Related bugs:
- * bug 682831: lost console output early in boot
+  * bug 682831: lost console output early in boot

  == Original bug report ==
On precise cloud images, I get a console output line like this:

  ci-info: eth0 : 1 192.168.122.204 255.255.255.0 52:54:00:7f:d8:ca^M

On saucy cloud images, this is missing.

[Bug 1100843] Re: Live Migration Causes Performance Issues

2013-10-07 Thread Chris J Arges
I found that two patches need to be backported to solve this issue:

ad0b5321f1f797274603ebbe20108b0750baee94
211ea74022f51164a7729030b28eec90b6c99a08

I've added the necessary bits into precise and tried a few tests:
1) Measure performance before and after savevm/loadvm.
2) Measure performance before and after a migrate to the same host.

In both cases the performance measured by something like lmbench was the same
as the previous run.
A test build is available here:
http://people.canonical.com/~arges/lp1100843/precise_v2/

** Patch added: fix-lp1100843-precise.debdiff

[Bug 1100843] Re: Live Migration Causes Performance Issues

2013-10-07 Thread Chris J Arges
** Description changed:

+ SRU Justification
+ [Impact]
+ * Users of QEMU that save their memory states using savevm/loadvm or migrate
experience worse performance after the migration/loadvm. To workaround these
issues VMs must be completely rebooted. Optimally we should be able to restore
a VM's memory state an expect no performance issue.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * savevm/loadvm:
+- Create a VM and install a test suite such as lmbench.
+- Get numbers right after boot and record them.
+- Open up the qemu monitor and type the following:
+ stop
+ savevm 0
+ loadvm 0
+ c
+- Measure performance and record numbers.
+- Compare if numbers are within margin of error.
+ * migrate:
+- Create VM, install lmbench, get numbers.
+- Open up qemu monitor and type the following:
+ stop
+ migrate exec:dd of=~/save.vm
+ quit
+- Start a new VM using qemu but add the following argument:
+ -incoming exec:dd if=~/save.vm
+- Run performance test and compare.
+
+ If performance measured is similar then we pass the test case.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * The fix is a backport of two upstream patches:
+ ad0b5321f1f797274603ebbe20108b0750baee94
+ 211ea74022f51164a7729030b28eec90b6c99a08
+
+ On patch allows QEMU to use THP if its enabled.
+ The other patch changes logic to not memset pages to zero when loading memory
for the vm (on an incoming migration).

I have 2 physical hosts running Ubuntu Precise. With 1.0+noroms-
  0ubuntu14.7 and qemu-kvm 1.2.0+noroms-0ubuntu7 (source from quantal,
built for Precise with pbuilder.) I attempted to build qemu-1.3.0 debs
from source to test, but libvirt seems to have an issue with it that I
haven't been able to track down yet.

- I'm seeing a performance degradation after live migration on Precise,
+  I'm seeing a performance degradation after live migration on Precise,
but not Lucid. These hosts are managed by libvirt (tested both
0.9.8-2ubuntu17 and 1.0.0-0ubuntu4) in conjunction with OpenNebula. I
don't seem to have this problem with lucid guests (running a number of
standard kernels, 3.2.5 mainline and backported linux-
  image-3.2.0-35-generic as well.)

I first noticed this problem with phoronix doing compilation tests, and
then tried lmbench where even simple calls experience performance
  degradation.

I've attempted to post to the kvm mailing list, but so far the only
suggestion was it may be related to transparent hugepages not being used
after migration, but this didn't pan out. Someone else has a similar
  problem here -

[Bug 1236380] [NEW] growroot fails for images on SD cards

2013-10-07 Thread Juerg Haefliger
Public bug reported:

The growroot script doesn't correctly determine the root device name if
the device name itself ends with a digit and partitions are named root
devicep1, root devicep2 aso. For example, when using an SD card:

$ ls -l /dev/mmcblk0*
brw-rw 1 root disk 179, 0 Oct 7 16:04 /dev/mmcblk0
brw-rw 1 root disk 179, 1 Oct 7 16:04 /dev/mmcblk0p1

See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1009172.

[Bug 1100843] Re: Live Migration Causes Performance Issues

2013-10-07 Thread Chris J Arges
** Description changed:

  SRU Justification

- * Users of QEMU that save their memory states using savevm/loadvm or migrate
experience worse performance after the migration/loadvm. To workaround these
issues VMs must be completely rebooted. Optimally we should be able to restore

  [Test Case]

- * savevm/loadvm:

I have 2 physical hosts running Ubuntu Precise. With 1.0+noroms-
  0ubuntu14.7 and qemu-kvm 1.2.0+noroms-0ubuntu7 (source from quantal,
built for Precise with pbuilder.) I attempted to build qemu-1.3.0 debs
from source to test, but libvirt seems to have an issue with it that I
haven't been able to track down yet.

I'm seeing a performance degradation after live migration on Precise,
but not Lucid.

[Bug 1236433] [NEW] maas-cluster-celery did not survive upgrade

2013-10-07 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

This morning I upgraded maas.
Then I went to deploy a node, and the node did not power on.
I found that 'maas-cluster-celery' was 'stop/waiting'.
I am able to 'sudo start maas-cluster-celery' now and it is functioning, but I
do not expect for apt-upgrade to break the system.

Further investigation shows the following in /var/log/maas/celery.log

[Bug 1236439] [NEW] switch to use not fully qualified hostnames breaks upgrades of l3-agent

2013-10-07 Thread James Page
Public bug reported:

switch to using socket.gethostname() for the name of neutron agents;
this has the unfortunate side effect with the l3-agent that all router
services are no longer scheduled on an active agent, resulting in
floating ip and access outages.

Looks like this will effect upgrades from grizzly-havana as well:

[Bug 1235372] Re: managesieve skipping of CRLF at end of AUTHENTICATE command

2013-10-07 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I can see that this bug is not yet fixed in the current version of
dovecot in Ubuntu (1:2.1.7-7ubuntu2) but appears to be fixed in Debian
(1:2.1.17-2). So Ubuntu should pick up the fix in the next merge from
Debian, which I expect will happen in the T series.

If you'd like this issue fixed in existing stable releases, then the
policy, procedure and rationale is described here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

Based on that policy, to update dovecot in a stable release to fix this
bug I think we'll need:

1) An understanding of the bug and its impact (rather than just the patch) to
ensure that we don't inadvertently introduce any regressions.
2) This issue fixed in the development release (a merge as expected to happen
anyway will do; but we're very close to freeze for Saucy now, so waiting for T
to open after Saucy's release is probably more realistic).

[Bug 1236462] [NEW] [SRU] update openstack packages to 2013.2 release tarballs

2013-10-07 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

Openstack 2013.2 will release on October 17, 2013.
Ubuntu 13.04 will release on October 17, 2013.

That means that we're basically guaranteed to not have 2013.2 official
release tarballs in Ubuntu.
This bug is a place holder for all the openstack packages that will need
updating to the official release tarballs.

2013-10-07 Thread Sam Hartman
OK, that's probably the cause of the segfault.
I've deleted the broken packages from our debian and ubuntu archives.
Unfortunately getting fixed packages to reappear is a bit annoying at
the moment.
The packages in
http://repository.project-moonshot.org/debian-moonshot/pool/main/m/moonshot-gss-eap
now sholud be OK.
In particular the deb from April.

2013-10-07 Thread Seth Arnold
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1236490] Re: Container has no networking

2013-10-07 Thread Aaron Bentley
Stephane Graber explains:
bug 1236490 very much looks like isc-dhcp-* is out of date in your container
a kernel change in 3.10 caused veth devices to do udp offloading which wasn't
supported by the isc-dhcp we shipped in precise, quantal and raring
so I SRUed the fix a couple months back to all supported releases. If that's
the problem you're having, just chroot into /var/lib/lxc/container/rootfs and
do an apt-get update apt-get install isc-dhcp-common isc-dhcp-client
if that updates isc-dhcp, then there's a good chance the next boot of that
container will work
you'll need to do that to all affected containers and if you have an old
container cache in /var/cache/lxc then also update that one or flush it so it
gets re-created on the next lxc-create

[Bug 1158708] [NEW] Services start/stop multiple times during boot

2013-10-07 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm running a fresh installation of Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS with all updates
from security/updates applied. While everything works as expected after
boot, I see that several services are started and stopped multiple
times. After adding --verbose to the kernel command line in grub, I
see the following in /var/log/dmesg (grep on ssh, but other services
look similar):

[ 15.448785] init: ssh goal changed from stop to start
[ 15.448977] init: ssh state changed from waiting to starting
[ 15.722522] init: ssh state changed from starting to pre-start

looks like a bug to me. I see this behaviour on other Ubuntu 12.04
systems as well.

[Bug 1236531] [NEW] support running apt with eatmydata

2013-10-07 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

During instance boot, cloud-init installs packages (if instructed by the user).
During instance boot, there is no state of the system that the user cares about.

I'd like to use eatmydata for apt-get install at that point, as it is
dramatically faster than apt-get even with --force-unsafe-io.

From an ubuntu perspective, this change would mean:
 a.) depending on eatmydata
 b.) MIR for eatmydata
c.) fixing eatmydata's relationship with sysvinit scripts. The thing to fix
there is that if you 'eatmydata apt-get install some-service' and some-service
starts a daemon, the daemon will inherit the LD_PRELOAD which is most likely
not desired.

[Bug 1158708] Re: Services start/stop multiple times during boot

2013-10-07 Thread Steve Langasek
Ok, that explains. The openssh-server package ships /etc/network/if-
up.d/openssh-server, which exists precisely to restart the service when
a network interface comes up. And NetworkManager does not use the
normal ADDRFAM==inet[6] convention, so this isn't triggered on the
desktop.

[ 10.978364] init: Connection from private client
[ 10.982980] init: ssh goal changed from start to stop

I don't know why this ssh service restart is needed/wanted when a
network interface comes up. It may be vestigial. Reassigning to the
openssh package.

Whatever the right answer is here, the behavior should probably be
consistent between NetworkManager and !NetworkManager uses.

[Bug 1100843] Re: Live Migration Causes Performance Issues

2013-10-07 Thread Chris J Arges
** Description changed:

  SRU Justification
  [Impact]
   * Users of QEMU that save their memory states using savevm/loadvm or migrate
experience worse performance after the migration/loadvm. To workaround these
issues VMs must be completely rebooted. Optimally we should be able to restore
a VM's memory state an expect no performance issue.

  [Test Case]

   * savevm/loadvm:
     - Create a VM and install a test suite such as lmbench.
     - Get numbers right after boot and record them.
     - Open up the qemu monitor and type the following:
   stop
   savevm 0
   loadvm 0
   c
     - Measure performance and record numbers.
     - Compare if numbers are within margin of error.
   * migrate:
     - Create VM, install lmbench, get numbers.
     - Open up qemu monitor and type the following:
   stop
   migrate exec:dd of=~/save.vm
   quit
     - Start a new VM using qemu but add the following argument:
   -incoming exec:dd if=~/save.vm
     - Run performance test and compare.

If performance measured is similar then we pass the test case.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The fix is a backport of two upstream patches:
  ad0b5321f1f797274603ebbe20108b0750baee94
  211ea74022f51164a7729030b28eec90b6c99a08

- On patch allows QEMU to use THP if its enabled.
+ One patch allows QEMU to use THP if its enabled.
The other patch changes logic to not memset pages to zero when loading memory
for the vm (on an incoming migration).

- * I've also run the qa-regression-testing test-qemu.py script and it passes
all tests.
+  * I've also run the qa-regression-testing test-qemu.py script and it
+ passes all tests.
+
+ [Additional Information]
+
+ Kernels from 3.2 onwards are affected, and all have the config:
+ CONFIG_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE_MADVISE=y. Therefore enabling THP is
+ applicable.

For those who wish to help me figure this out. Here's the notable part of the
boot log:
[ 125.729819] vmhgfs: disagrees about version of symbol
vmci_datagram_destroy_handle
[ 125.729823] vmhgfs: Unknown symbol vmci_datagram_destroy_handle (err -22)
[ 125.729865] vmhgfs: disagrees about version of symbol vmci_datagram_send

[ 125.729907] vmhgfs: disagrees about version of symbol
vmci_datagram_create_handle
[ 125.729909] vmhgfs: Unknown symbol vmci_datagram_create_handle (err -22)

Don't know which version of vmci it is: Package or Kernel

The current incarnation of my prep branch (which I updated 30 minutes
ago) is taking vmci completely out of the package equation (as in DKMS
doesn't notice it during the build process).

Since you didn't specify which VMware product you're using I'm going to
assume it's the new version of Workstation/Player/Fusion possibly
available. Use those tools that come with the program

You're right, it's Fusion 6.0.1

prefer the open-vm-tools. If've been happy with them so far.

I prefer the open-vm-tools too. I use both versions on my Scratch
machine: open-vm-tools for the modules and the proprietary package for
everything else.

In my time maintaining this package, I've never had this much trouble

[Bug 1234132] Re: Wrong order for mountall-net

2013-10-07 Thread Steve Langasek
Well, I see no sense for dnsmasq to run on a desktop. And I see no sense
for networmanager to run on a server.

Well, while I agree that networkmanager isn't fit for servers, I don't
think there are many people using dnsmasq on servers this way, either.

Well, dnsmasq _is_ a DNS server and it is usually the primary one.
Adding more DNS servers to the resolv.conf makes your server depending
on systems you do not want them depending on.

You're always dependent on external servers for DNS; in the best case
(which is the case dnsmasq aspires to), you're only dependent on the
root servers and authoritative servers, but dnsmasq itself doesn't
change the fact that there's an external dependency. I could understand
if you said you were running bind, or some other *authoritative*
nameserver for your local network, since that would ensure reliability
in the face of an upstream network outage; but that's not what you're
doing here, so dnsmasq isn't actually providing more reliability than if
you were just pointing at whichever upstream forwarding resolvers you
deem appropriate (proximity vs. high-availability, etc). And in one
concrete fashion, your dnsmasq-only configuration is *less* reliable
than using resolvers on the network, because it adds dnsmasq as a boot
dependency in the rest of the system and the dnsmasq package isn't
handling that boot dependency the way you need it to.

mountall is a essential part of the system; as is DNS. It is easily
possible with a normal system-V system to build this dependency. If it
is not with upstart ... However, I am not a expert of upstart so it
might be possibly with it too.

Of course it's possible to do that with upstart. The bug is that this
hasn't *been done* for dnsmasq. And this is in no way upstart-specific,
you would have the same race condition with this dnsmasq package on a
sysvinit system; just because you might know how to manually mangle an
init script to get it to start earlier doesn't mean the system is
properly integrated. In fact, the dnsmasq init script declares that it
wants network mounts to be done before it starts, which would cause a
circular dependency for you!

I really don't think the configuration you describe is one that we want
to support, but if we were going to support it, the right way to do this
would be for dnsmasq to integrate with mountall by sending its own
SIGUSR1 once started. dnsmasq does not itself need to be converted to
use an upstart job to do this - it can make the same calls in
/etc/init.d/dnsmasq that are made in /etc/init/mountall-net.conf -
though perhaps it makes sense to convert it to an upstart job rather
than including upstart-specific hooks in the init script.

** Package changed: mountall (Ubuntu) = dnsmasq (Ubuntu)

** Changed in: dnsmasq (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete = Triaged

** Summary changed:

- Wrong order for mountall-net
+ dnsmasq needs to trigger mountall rescan of network mounts

[Bug 1069570] Re: 1 MAC Address, two IPs - DNS is out of sync with DHCP leases databases

2013-10-07 Thread Julian Edwards
This is happening because MAAS added the host{} entry for its MAC before
the lease expired. The 30 second thing is clearly a hack and doesn't
work properly because it's a race condition with MAAS lease scanner.

The only real solution is to SRU the ignore-client-ids fix.

I think this is purely a packaging bug, so invalidating the maas task
that was just added.

Fujitsu BX900/DX90 installation problem

2013-10-07 Thread Andy Igoshin
Hello!

i try to install ubuntu 13.04 server on Fujitsu BX900 (BX924S3 diskless
blade) whose storage is Fujitsu DX90 iSCSI target (iSCSI boot).

in the BX924S3 blade Emulex CNA 10G adapter is used. this device has
hardware iSCSI support. i configure iSCSI initiators on it. after that
corresponding LUNs become visible in the BX924S3 blade's BIOS.

ubuntu installer does not detect LUNs available in such a way.
i think its Detect disks/login to iSCSI target functionality supposes
starting of software iSCSI initiator in the OS instead of detecting and
working with LUNs connected via Emulex CNA adapter.

at the same time system successfully detects the presence of Emulex CNA
adapter. also in the OS i see loaded components be2iscsi/*.

SLES 11 SP3 and CentOS 6.4 successfully detect such hardware configuration.
they are installed, run and work (i have corresponding dmesg and lsmod).

are there any chances that this hardware configuration will also work in
ubuntu in the nearest future?

Regards,
