Re: [Bug 103010] Re: qemu no tun/tap networking

It's very important to note that qemu-kvm is in Ubuntu main, and
VirtualBox is in universe. The quality control, and in particular the
security model you might expect are quite different between the two
packages in Ubuntu.

[Bug 524147] Re: UEC NC failed to fetch preseed.conf from CC using lucid-server-amd64-20100218

2010-03-09 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Okay, I found a suitable workaround, at least, for the lab testing ...

Simply ensure that all systems are powered off before starting a new
run.

I suspect the reason I hit this was because I had deployed a topo2 setup
(with a standalone CC). Then I setup a topo1 installation, which has a
CLC+WC+CC+SC on cempedak. But mabolo was still running with a CC,
broadcasting its cluster name. Which confused things.

Clearly we need to fix this bug.

But I'm un-blocked on my testing, assuming I start with all physical
systems powered off.

[Bug 490732] Re: KVM guests no longer start after upgrading host system from 9.04 to 9.10 (i386 only)

2010-03-08 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Karmic is closed for development, whereas Lucid is still open for
development. There's very little if anything we can do to fix this in
Karmic at this point. Lucid, on the other hand, we still have a few
weeks of fixes that can land. If someone wants us to spend development
effort to solve this for Lucid, we need the bug confirmed there.

[Bug 532682] Re: instance stays in pending for 1 hour, then to terminated

2010-03-08 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Dan-

This is the issue you and I looked at on Friday.

I believe we decided that Eucalyptus was blowing up somewhere during the
image decryption, and then the cloud/database worked itself into a nasty
state.

We restarted eucalyptus several times, and eventually we were able to
register the very same images that were failing.

I'm assigning you this bug, as you said this was something you needed to
discuss with Chris.

This bug is marked High and Confirmed because it's blocking Scott's work
on creating/verifying Lucid UEC images.

[Bug 513273] Re: kvm with -vga std is broken since karmic

2010-03-04 Thread Dustin Kirkland
So one very viable approach would be to use the vgabios.bin and bios.bin
that's built/shipped with the qemu-kvm source package.

These are the versions of those bios files blessed by upstream and
known to work. It's what upstream would prefer that we used, as these
are tested with the qemu-kvm 0.12.3 release. As of the 0.12.3 release
tarball, it contains all of the source files necessary to rebuild the
bios bins. When I packaged and added seabios to Ubuntu, this was not
the case (qemu-kvm 0.12.0).

I think I'll do this in the short term, barring any objections.

For Lucid + 1, I'm working with mjt and lool and hoping to get in sync
with Debian, and use a common set of packaging between Debian and
Ubuntu, which would ideally use the separate vgabios and seabios
packages.

Re: [Bug 429443] Re: /usr/bin/kvm-ok should be disassociated from kvm

2010-03-02 Thread Dustin Kirkland
kvm-ok used to be just a grep for vmx|svm of /proc/cpuinfo.

Now, it performs a couple of additional checks. It will also check
dmesg for a message about kvm being disabled in your bios, and look
for /dev/kvm.

The check for the bios message has been exceedingly useful to users,
and we the maintainers trying to support users who's computer
manufacturers arbitrarily disable kvm in their bios by default. Much
of the documentation spread around the web simply says grep your
cpuinfo for vmx|svm, but most of it neglects to say, oh, by the way,
check your dmesg for a kvm disabled in bios message.

This particular bug is really about moving /usr/bin/kvm-ok out of the
qemu-kvm package and into some package the user will already have on
their system when they're trying to decide if they can use kvm or not.

The current mode is clearly suboptimal, which looks like:
 $ sudo apt-get install qemu-kvm
 $ kvm-ok || sudo apt-get purge qemu-kvm

That's clearly silly.

Whether a message ends up in MOTD, I care not. But I thought Kees'
change set a precedent for giving friendly hints about cpu features
which are disabled in BIOS.

[Bug 530091] Re: [alpha3] NC fails to be detected.

2010-03-02 Thread Dustin Kirkland
I'm confirming this.

I have a new UEC setup this morning from the current archive.
CLC+WC+CC+SC, and 4xNC.

The CLC was definitely up and running and serving the preseed.conf
before the NCs were installed.

The NCs installed correctly, and they have the CLC's ssh key in
/var/lib/eucalyptus/.ssh/authorized_keys.

But none of them are registering automatically.

I think I've seen this quite a bit around Alpha3, and when I mentioned
it, we chalked it up to preseed/netboot/timing issues.

In any case, this is non ideal. And it looks like a regression to me,
as this was working very, very well in Portland.

[Bug 530091] Re: [alpha3] NC fails to be detected.

2010-03-02 Thread Dustin Kirkland
I believe I've tracked down where this problem was introduced:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-
dev/eucalyptus/ubuntu/revision/909

My nodes don't have [ -f /etc/eucalyptus/eucalyptus-nc.conf ], so the
publication job isn't starting.

This is because the debconf key/value for eucalyptus/cluster-name does not
exist on my NC.
  $ echo GET eucalyptus/cluster-name | sudo debconf-communicate

And thus the eucalyptus-nc.postinst isn't able to populate that file.

I'm working on a fix.

[Bug 442598] Re: 'qemu-img snapshot' crashed, corrupting disk image

2010-03-02 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Actually I tested savevm too, and that seems to work as well. Here's
how, for completeness...

$ kvm-img create -f qcow2 foo.img 4G
Formatting 'foo.img', fmt=qcow2 size=4294967296 encryption=off cluster_size=0

$ kvm -m 512 -cdrom lucid-desktop-amd64.iso -hda foo.img

At some point here (even during boot), drop to monitor
ctrl-alt-2
savevm foo.img

You can watch the image grow as memory is written:
$ watch ls -alF foo.img

Once it's done, go back to the vga with ctrl-alt-1. Change the system somehow.
 Then roll back with
ctrl-alt-2
loadvm foo.img

Worked well for me.

2010-03-01 Thread Dustin Kirkland
