RE: Review packages included in the ubuntu-server package set

2010-07-19 Thread Miano, Steven M.
I think Michael has an excellent suggestion, seeing all ~300 packages on one
page would be nice.

I would like to go through this list of seed packages, but as a minimalist, and
with a paradigm that says building a server should be _building_ it up, and not
striping out the cruft, I'm a little nervous about commenting that ~100
packages get removed.

As stated below, having certain packages available on the CD/DVD is nice, but
are these packages default installed with the OS? I like the tasksel processes,
but honestly I apt-get install after the OS install and then

has been created and populated from the Ubuntu seeds. There are 279
   packages currently included in it.

   [1]: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ArchiveReorganisation

...

   Leave a
comment there for each packages that shouldn't be part of the
   ubuntu-server package set.

   [2]: http://ubuntuserverpkgsetreview.appspot.com/

...

In any case, the list needs some serious review. I'm reasonably certain
 Gimp
shouldn't be on the list (that being just the most glaring example).

I was wondering what this list really means! Are these packages for the
server CD? Or are these packages part of a server related package list?
Sorry for these basic questions but I think I'm not the only one wondering
about it.

For example: mailman is an important server package but nobody needs it on
the actual install CD. If you want to setup a mailinglist server an admin
should be able to install everything related after the initial install by
her-/himself. The same with bacula, apache, tomcat, nagios and so on.
A little bit more info would be great. Even to hear which Ubuntu groups
(website, mailinglists and so on) decide what makes it to the server
distribution of Ubuntu.

Is it possible to get the list sorted alphabetically by package name? And
to get a complete list on one page? These paging makes everything very
confusing.

I started seeding the Alpha 1 today on 3 different boxes from 3 different

 Minutes

## Use title4 (ie ) for each section of the minutes
## Only topics discussed during the meetings should be put in the
minutes.
## Status reporting is done via another channel.

 Action Points from Previous Meetings

 * Action: Alpha 1 testing - Alpha1 testing went well, nothing appear to
blow up, only had 50% coverage for Alpha1 need more for Alpha2
[ACTION] ttx to coordinate testing for Alpha 2

 * Action: smoser to ensure cloud images make it for Alpha. This was
done and tested. Now that slangasek doesnt do release management anymore
someone
   else needs to be trained.
[ACTION] smoser to train someone on the release team on the cloud image
release.

detailed work item overview for server-maverick-cloud-kernel-upgrades.
Action has been carried over

 * Action: sommer to present a list of sections that need input from the
server team. No action was taken. Action has been carried over.

 Maverick Development

The burn down chart is looking a little twisted due to the appearance of
the UEC blueprints and more. All high specs should be 25% completion and
that is not the case. It is
worrying that at least 3 of the high specs have 0/1 items done and no
status update. As a reminder please update your status and work items by
EOB Monday. With regards to UEC specs a
split has been made for the work between alpha2/3 and onwards and we'd
like to make sure this reflects reality

[ACTION] all to keep their specs uptodate with workitems (4-16 hours
each) and update their status monday EOB

Weekly Updates Questions for the QA Team (hggdh)

Carlos remarked that:

 1. UEC test rig is ready to test the new SRUs
 2. I cannot put Maverick in right now due to bug #588861
 3. I am indeed a bit behind, but should catch up fast

After that a whole discussion about SRU processes and sponsorship
processes took place revolving around mongodb.

Weekly Updates Questions for the Kernel Team (jjohansen)

Jjohansen will look at atop patches and how important they are. Ttx
mentioned that 587893 was fixed and that a maverick backport kernel was
available. Jjohansen said he would review the patchset, we are concerned
with possibe performance degradation and breakage.

 Papercuts Alpha2 subcycle status (ttx)

There was 14 targets nominated and 4 were fixed.

 Stable Release Updates

No bugs were nominated for SRU backports.

 Open Discussion

None

 Next Meeting

The next meeting will be at Tuesday 2010-06-15 at 1800 UTC -

RE: Load Balancer

From the repo's this is what I was able to find.

balance - Load balancing solution and generic tcp proxy
fair - high availability load balancer for TCP connections
pen - Load balancer for simple tcp based protocols
pound - reverse proxy, load balancer and HTTPS front-end for Web servers
python-pydirector - pure Python TCP load balancer

If you do pursue this venture it would be pretty great of you to post up your
results and findings. ; )

There are several load balancers available in Ubuntu linux for several purpose.

Pound is an http load balancer. HAproxy is an http load balancer too.
HTTP load balancer are level7 load balancer because they operate at
the application layer (the 7th layer of the OSI model). IPVS is a
standard kernel module that can load balance several thousands of TCP

Apologies if this is the wrong forum, but I was wondering why the install
screens take so long under Hyper-V?

Once installed, the system runs fine - the install screens take forever to
appear[0], the install process reminds me of using a 1200 baud modem connection
to a BBS.

I suspect the culprit is the video interface (I assume it defaults to the a
bare-bones video driver), but with Hyper-V as a mainstream product, and
assuming there will be interest in running Ubuntu appliances under it in mainly
MS Windows Server shops, I think this problem could keep some users from
considering rolling out Ubuntu Server.

I've not noticed this on the Desktop installs I've done under Hyper-V, but I
haven't done one in a while...

So I'd be interested in understanding why this happening, and try and find out
what it would take to correct this problem - I'm happy to help, but I am not
a coder...

Thanks,

Ken

Yes :)

It is normal behaviour and the recommendation is to have the
/etc/hostname set ot just the server name (without the domain).

No editing required. When the installer asks you this:

Please enter the hostname for this system.

The hostname is a single word that identifies your system to the

RE: UFW 0.20

2008-09-09 Thread Miano, Steven M.
Hi!

ufw 0.19 introduced port ranges, but the version currently in Intrepid
is 0.21. 0.20 and later require iptables = 1.4.0, which is not
available in 8.04 LTS. At some point, I hope to provide iptables 1.4 and
a newer version of ufw in hardy-backports or a PPA, but I haven't had
time to do that yet. I'd be happy to review updated ufw and iptables
packages and get them uploaded for -backports if someone provides them.

An alternative would be to install and use 0.19[1] on hardy (it works just
fine on 8.04 LTS). This is of course not officially supported, but
neither would using -backports.

UFW 0.20

2008-09-08 Thread Miano, Steven M.

What's the makeup of the Ubuntu server team? More specifically, does it

attempting to scrape out a living deploying Ubuntu on bottom-of-the-barrel
lowest low-end hardware, installing those machines in deplorable conditions,

The above isn't intended to form the basis of an accusation or complaint. I

the ability to remotely manipulate a server that isn't even running versus
those of us out here in the hillbilly backwater who think that a high end

RE: Moving w3m out of standard

2008-06-16 Thread Miano, Steven M.
I think an interactive web browser is completely unnecessary on a
server. You should do your browsing from a workstation, and then use
wget or sftp to transfer any files you need to the server.

There are cases where the documentation that is packaged with typical
server applications only comes as HTML (e.g. Wordpress). You won't get
far with 'less' here, I always installed lynx for these cases.

I would have to whole heartedly agree on less is more when it comes to servers.
The vast majority of server applications will not require an interactive web
browser. If one really needed an interactive web browser they would surely
already have a net connection and be able to use aptitude to add additional
packages as they wish.

Just my .02,
