[Bug 125471] Possible Solution: Ubuntu Server and Debian - EXACTLY same installation in a VM. See below.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 I've been testing both, Ubuntu Server and Debian in VM's to make a decision for installation for a production server. One of the tests I ran was exactly this: Using mirroring for all of the system's partitions, including the OS. I reproduced exactly the same steps for both OS's like 3 times each. After each installation, I tried shutting down and removing one of the disks. For Debian, succeeded all times. Reconnected the disk and resynchronized the disks and everything went OK. For Ubuntu Server, failed all times, taking me to busy box shell. I could connect the disk back and boot it up without doing anything else. Thought I've installed Ubuntu Server much more than 3 times before trying Debian out, I have further info about this behavior. Twice, after reconnecting the disk back, I could see the disk resynchronizing, but at about 16% or so, I got kernel panic due to inability to synchronize disks in RAID1. About the VM's: Running latest VMware Server. Ubuntu Server 7.10 - i386 Debian 40r3-i386 Hope it is of some use while pursuing a definite solution for this issue. [Bug 214714] [NEW] Upgrading to Hardy destroyed my network shares and when I try to recreate them I get this long complicated error message
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I just took the plunge and upgraded from Gutsy to the latest pre-release version of Hardy. Overall it fixed a bunch of problems for me and I'm delighted with the new version. I did run into one issue that caused some problems though: After I had upgraded to Hardy my folder called "music" was no longer shared as a SMB windows network share. This means that my Windows computer (which doesn't have any music stored on it) cannot play any tunes. I immediately tried to fix this by sharing the folder again but when I tried I got this really long strange error message that says I should talk to by system administrator ("yeah right, I wish I could afford one of those actually :-)". The error message I got was: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot share path /media/EXTERNAL___/music as we are restricted to only sharing directories we own. Ask the administrator to add the line "usershare owner only = False" to the [global] section of the smb.conf to allow this. The folder I'm trying to share over SMB is located on one of those external USB harddrives and it's formatted as NTFS. That means that when I mount it in Ubuntu all the files are marked as "owned by root". Now, in Gutsy I was able to share these folders just fine. However, it seems that in Hardy some kind of flag has been activated that prevents me from sharing files that I don't own. Well, clearly it's my files that are stored on this USB harddrive but it seems that the ability to share folders from NTFS drives has been lost in Hardy. There was no obvious workaround for me to solve this problem, except copying the files to my root partition which is ext2 (this is quite inconvenient though because my music collection doesn't fit on this partition). There was also no checkbox that allowed me to type in my administrator password and override this error message and share the folder anyway. I've attached a screenshot to this bug, that illustrates the problem I ran into. ** Affects: samba (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Upgrading to Hardy destroyed my network shares and when I try to recreate them I get this long complicated error message https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/214714 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS issue (was not resolved on #207441)
The last part of this is a wpasupplicant bug. The ordering of the shutdown scripts is already well-established, and unmounting remote filesystems takes place at S31 (S31umountnfs.sh). wpasupplicant needs to be fixed to run its shutdown script later than this; probably at S35 or S36, which is the point in the runlevel sequence where networking as a whole is shut down in Debian. ** Also affects: wpasupplicant (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: wpasupplicant (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium Status: New => Confirmed -- CIFS/SMBFS issue (was not resolved on #207441) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/211631 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 215410] [NEW] disable-weak-auth.patch renders ineffective "client plaintext auth = yes" in smb.conf
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: samba A change introduced in 3.0.27a-2(seen below) makes it impossible to access samba resources that require a plaintext password. An instance of "client plaintext auth = yes" in the [global] options section is ignored by smbclient when attempting to connect to a samba server with $smbclient -U ///. The error message given is: "Server requested plaintext password but 'client use plaintext auth' is disabled". Note the incorrect use of the word "use" in the single-quoted section. Adding a section of "client use plaintext auth = yes" in the global section results in an error about the afformentioned unknown option being ignored. An instance of "client plaintext auth = yes" is not an unknown option, but is ineffective becuase the patch "hard wires" the program preventing plaintext passwords. A much better solution would be to make the default smb.conf configuration file to feature the "client use plaintext auth = no" option, and allow the user to set to "yes" if necessary. This is not a case of the "client lanman auth = no" disabling the "client plaintext auth" option. This bug is important because certain large universities still have servers that require plaintext passwords. ==Problematic Update Below samba (3.0.27a-2) unstable; urgency=low * debian/patches/disable-weak-auth.patch: disable plaintext authentication on the client, and lanman authentication on both client and server, by default since these are only needed for Win9x or Samba with encrypted passwords disabled and are potential password attack vectors. Re: [Bug 214829] Re: [hardy] Cannot xforward firefox
Can you capture some more verbose output with "ssh -vvvX [EMAIL PROTECTED] "firefox" and post the verbose debug here (scrubbed if necessary)? Additionally, when you launch a shell, can you make absolutely sure that you're on the remote machine (compare the difference between ifconfig on the local and remote machines and make sure those are different). Then, when you launch firefox, grab the output of "ps -ef | grep firefox" on both the local and remote machine. You should see a process called "/usr/lib/firefox-3.0b5/firefox" on the remote machine, but no such on the local machine. :-Dustin -- [hardy] Cannot xforward firefox https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/214829 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openssh in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Re: [Bug 214829] [NEW] [hardy] Cannot xforward firefox
(1) Please try this with another application that you have installed to see if this is a firefox-only problem (2) Make sure you have ssh X forwarding turned on. You may have your RHEL machine automatically configured to do that all of the time. Try using "ssh -X" to your hardy box, and see if you can get an x-forwarded firefox session. If not, this is likely a duplicate of Bug #202508, so please mark as a duplicate and note that. If "ssh -X" does work, you either need to use the -X option, or permanently configure your /etc/ssh/sshd_config file to always X forward, or put it in your local .ssh/config file.
