[Bug 217815] Re: Installation stalls randomly until a key is pressed

2008-04-21 Thread Ante Karamatić
During my kvm/qemu testing, even before Gutsy was released, I had
similar problem - guest operating system would stall (both windows and
linux) randomly when I would switch workspaces in GNOME, shift focus
from application to application, etc... As soon as I would move focus
back to qemu/kvm window, everything would continue. Sometimes even that
wouldn't help.

But, I never had those problems on my workstation, only on my laptop.
Workstation has Intel E6400 CPU, while laptop is occupied with Intel
T2400. True, I didn't do so many tests on workstation, as I did on
laptop...

At the moment, I'm doing encrypted setup of server's release candidate,
with hardy's qemu+kqemu, and I didn't have problems (I'm at 15% of
wiping partition).

It's a custom program, actually, blockdev-wipe (in the partman-crypto
package).

Note also that there are reports of similar behaviour in other parts of the
installer, which aren't necessarily as I/O intensive.

[Bug 217815] Re: Installation stalls randomly until a key is pressed

2008-04-21 Thread Colin King
A couple of points worth mulling over to corner this one..

1. Is the "hanging" a function of memory size - for example, the buffer
cache filling up after a certain amount of time and then pdflush kicking
in very aggressively doing dirty data writing backs as fast as it can.
In which case, one may see the system resume again after a (long) period
of time once pdflush is complete. It may be worth tweaking with the
/proc/sys/vm/dirty* options to see if this trips the problem more
frequently. Also, it may be worth seeing if doing the install with small
memory kvm virtual machines shows this problem earlier than large memory
virtual machines just to see if it is a buffer cache write back cpu
starvation issue.

2. From my understanding dd is being used to zero the encrypted disk.
Does changing the dd block size to a very large size trip this bug
earlier as one gets more throughput than the normal (small) block size
default?

3. Is the hanging resumed by an external interrupt (keyboard, mouse)
because of the scheduler boosts interactive sessions temporarily and
hence interfering (in a positive way) to the balancing of the encryption
kernel space thread, dd and pdflush?

[Bug 217815] Re: Installation stalls randomly until a key is pressed

2008-04-21 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Up to date hardy with kvm 1:62+dfsg-0ubuntu6 still hangs. Note that
this time I tried it with the same command as I did in my last comment
(eg, kvm/xtightvncviewer and not virt-manager).

Last few times it stopped in 'Erasing data on SCSI1...'. Getting back
to Soren's comment on default_idle-- whenever the install hangs, CPU
utilization on the host by the guest goes to '0'. Normally during the
installer it is around 100% on one of the host CPUs (when not waiting
for a response from the user).

Also note that if not using virt-manager and gtkvnc (ie you use
xtightvncviewer or possibly other vnc clients), it seems all you have to
do to get it unhung is drag the mouse over the window (the window does
not need to be the active window either). This must be a difference
between vnc implementations. So when testing this, be *very* careful
about mouse movements over the installer window.

[Bug 155947] Re: ldap config causes Ubuntu to hang at login

2008-04-21 Thread Andreas Hasenack
I believe that "soft" is a better default for nss_ldap. FWIW, Mandriva has been
using this patch for quite a while now:
http://svn.mandriva.com/cgi-bin//viewvc.cgi/packages/cooker/nss_ldap/current/SOURCES/nss_ldap-250-bind_policy_default_soft.patch?revision=5975&view=markup

However, I note that the Debian changelog of the libnss-ldap package has this
entry:
libnss-ldap (251-4) unstable; urgency=low

  * Added system which implicitly sets bind_policy to 'soft'
during system boot/shutdown. This is implemented by an
init script run at end of system boot and start of system
shutdown which creates/removes a file in /var/lib/libnss-ldap
called 'bind_policy_soft'. When this file exists the policy
is treated as 'soft' regardless of the configuration in
/etc/nss-ldap.conf. Note that soft doesn't mean 'always
fail' but rather only try to connect to each URI listed in
the configuration file once, with no sleeping.
Closes: #375077, #375215

I don't know what to make of that yet. I will try to get a system
running this afternoon with ldap, nss_ldap, etc and a notebook client
and see what happens.

[Bug 155947] Re: ldap config causes Ubuntu to hang at login

2008-04-21 Thread Jamie Strandboge
After seeing two machines experience these hangs, I was able to
reproduce it on a clean hardy install:

1. install hardy (of course)
2. apt-get install ldap-auth-client
3. configure ldap to use (via debconf):
ldap://127.0.0.1/
root requires a password: 'no'
everything else defaults
4. configure /etc/nsswitch.conf to have:
passwd: compat ldap
group: compat ldap
5. configure /boot/grub/menu.lst to have:
# defoptions=
6. update-grub
7. reboot

This is not a 'kernel hang' as it will respond to 'ctrl+alt+delete'. It
does stop after kernel logger.

[Bug 219914] Re: mod_disk_cache enabled globally by default

2008-04-21 Thread Andrew Jorgensen
That's really strange. So there's no disk_cache.conf or disk_cache.load
in your /etc/apache2/mods-enabled? Did you use the command-line upgrade
tool (do-release-upgrade)? I had very little else installed on this
machine at the time.

Obviously this is the best kind of bug. The kind we can't reproduce.

In any case I think the disk_cache.conf file should be changed to not
actually enable caching. If the user wants caching she'll want to
enable it for specific directories, certainly not for the entire server.
Would you consider changing the .conf file?

[Bug 155947] Re: ldap config causes Ubuntu to hang at login

2008-04-21 Thread Andreas Hasenack
We really need to set this bind_policy to soft, or else the machine just
won't boot. It stops at klogd. I just tried with hardy.

So, after setting it to soft using a rescue disk, boot proceeded as
normal. I didn't even touch the timeouts. Now, the ldap user obviously
can't login yet in my scenario because it's a notebook with wireless, so
there is no network setup yet at the gdm prompt. But this is another
issue. The local user login works.

You also have upgrade issues to consider. Now we seem to have reverted
to upstream's default of using just /etc/ldap.conf for both pam_ldap and
nss_ldap. FWIW, I agree with this change. Debian was the only kid in the
block with renamed config files for these two libraries, and they both
share a lot of config options. So, these settings need to be migrated to
/etc/ldap.conf, or at least a warning should be issued. (If this is
already done, then please ignore what I just wrote).

[Bug 155947] Re: ldap config causes Ubuntu to hang at login

2008-04-21 Thread Jamie Strandboge
STATUS UPDATE:
The ubuntu package does include 00boot_delays_h.patch which is the Debian patch
for this issue. This seems to work for udev, but not for functions that call
libc's initgroups(), which by definition will try to get all the groups a
member belongs to, and if /etc/nsswitch.conf contains 'ldap' for the groups
database, libc checks ldap. start-stop-daemon is one such application.

libnss-ldap does provide for 'nss_initgroups_ignoreusers', which allows for nss
to skip ldap in intigroups() for the specified groups. So, to confirm that
this was the problem, I added to /etc/ldap.conf:
nss_initgroups_ignoreusers klog

I then rebooted and the boot proceeded past klogd, and then hung at
crond. Currently thinking about a solution.

** Summary changed:

- ldap config causes Ubuntu to hang at login
+ libnss-ldap: calls to initgroups() causes boot to hang when using

[Bug 175689] Re: "Share Folder" in right-click menu does not share ntfs drive folders

2008-04-21 Thread Josh Smith
this problem can be solved by having the fstab line as
# /dev/hda4
UUID=35A24A8B2B97FBDB /media/hda4 ntfs defaults,umask=000,gid=46 0 1
instead of umask=007

000 gives read write permissions to everyone (ie the same as 777 in chmod). the
last digit is for the "others" which included samba. i think this should be
the default mount line on hardy. Is there any reason why you wouldnt want
this?
ntfs is a shared partition as it has no concept of permissions, so allowing
"others" to read write makes sense. it should be as permissive as possible as
there is no concept of any security (note that samba itself then has the option
in the gui to allow user looking at your share to edit it, by setting 000 users
on the network cant write to your files unless samba lets them too)
if not this then samba should be added to the group with gid=46, or whatever is
necessary
adding "uid=1000" is surely wrong, as this is just for you as a user, so doesnt
work on shared systems, as only one user can acess the drive

the gui correctly tells you you need to add "usershare owner only = False", but
you also need to give samba permission to read the drive, which is not done by
default, and which the gui does not tell you. this is probably the problem for
"Waldecir Loureiro dos Santos Filho" and "raptor45"
anyone agree?

Add a new configuration option 'nss_initgroups_ignoreusers_below_uid'

[Bug 215904] Re: Assertion error in io.c:234: ber_flush2

So after a quick run through the code we find that that the changing of
the variable sb->sb_valid (which is what the assert is checking) only
happens in one place in sockbuf.c in ber_int_sb_init() and never gets
changed again. Therefore we are probably looking at some sort of memory
or pointer corruption that ends up twiddling that bit. :(

[Bug 217815] Re: Installation stalls randomly until a key is pressed

2008-04-21 Thread Colin Watson
Derek: There's no screensaver in d-i. Screen blanking is a distant
possibility, though. The default screen blanking interval set by the
kernel is 10 minutes, and d-i doesn't change this; if the failure
happens after 10 minutes (or nearby, to allow for possible clock skew
inside kvm) then that would provide some circumstantial support for
this.

[Bug 217815] Re: Installation stalls randomly until a key is pressed

2008-04-21 Thread Henrik Nilsen Omma
Some more data points:

* I've tested extensively with the i386 version now (though I haven't
seen any reports of it there). I ran 3 alt i386 installs with LVM+crypto
in virtualbox at the same time on a 4-core box without getting any
hangs.

* I ran both the i386 and amd64 versions in qemu Without the kvm HW
acceleration, with no hangs.

* I ran two 64 bit installs /w LVM+crypto at the same time, one
allocated 384MB RAM and one allocated 2GB, both with an 8GB disk. They
both seemed to stop at the same time and very frequently, every 3-4% of
progress. I killed the 2GB RAM version and let the smaller one continue
-- and it would stop less often every 8-10% perhaps. Running the smaller
RAM version again by itself, it stalls at about every 20% (as was usual
before)

[Bug 202508] Re: ssh -X no longer works

2008-04-21 Thread kmon
I can't believe it was as simple as adding localhost in my /etc/hosts
file...

cat /etc/hosts
192.168.1.2 cube
127.0.0.1 macbook localhost
#127.0.1.1 macbook
#127.0.0.1 hogar

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
#::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
#fe00::0 ip6-localnet
#ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
#ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
#ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
#ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

[Bug 217815] Re: Installation stalls randomly until a key is pressed

2008-04-21 Thread Henrik Nilsen Omma
next data point: install to a ram disk

I first installed to a 2gb disk image and got hangs as usual. I then
created a ram disk with 'mount -t ramfs none ram/ -o maxsize=300'
and copied the 2gb image file to it. When I re-ran the installation to
the store-in-ram version it completed without hangs.

The physical box has 8GB RAM, and there was no disk caching.

[Bug 217815] Re: Installation stalls randomly until a key is pressed

2008-04-21 Thread Stéphane Graber
Looking at the various syslog files we have, it seems we always get
messages similar to those :

Apr 21 23:02:11 kernel: [ 1072.770546] Clocksource tsc unstable (delta =
182801418122 ns)
Apr 21 23:02:11 kernel: [ 1072.774264] Time: acpi_pm clocksource has been
installed.

Those usually appear at the same time as the installer get stuck.

Lars just did an install with "notsc" on the kernel command line, which
did trigger this bug.

Er... What I meant to say was, that with "notsc", Lars did an install
that did *NOT* trigger this bug.

Considering that the disk_cache module is not enabled by default, I
don't think we should change the .conf file. Doing so would mean that a
user has to do two things to enable disk caching: load the module *and*
configure the urls to cache.

We'd rather provide a default setup that works out of the box - thus caching
/.

[Bug 217815] Re: Installation stalls randomly until a key is pressed

2008-04-21 Thread Soren Hansen
If further testing reveals that disabling the tsc actually helps, I've
prepared a kernel patch that will fix it for us:

 http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=soren/ubuntu-
hardy.git;a=commit;h=c472835957c7bce42c56aa2c57caa2e80a5bdb1a

Mind you, the code is completely untested (it's getting rather late
here), but it looks plausible.

Well I tested this on my machine here and I still see the problem, though
with notsc it seems less frequent. I'm concerned that may be wishful
thinking on my part. I have noticed a new behavior where the install
red-screen fails during the "selecting and installing packages" bit towards
the end of the install. I get a stall like before, but this time when I hit
a key to continue, rather than carrying it, it drops me out to the red
screen. Even if I go go back a few steps in the install process, it keeps
giving me a red screen "A installation step has failed" or the like. I need
to do some more testing and see if I can get it to reliably correlate to
something I'm changing, but as you pointed out, it's getting late here
too...
