[Bug 222558] Re: password in bacula-fd.conf is not auto-generated

2008-09-10 Thread Kern Sibbald
I was not aware of this bug (sorry, I should look at them all), but I
think I can shed some light on it and even provide the "code" necessary
to fix it.

Basically the user is saying that each Bacula daemon generated needs a
shared secrete random password used for authentication, and these
passwords *must* be generated at install time to be unique. I have not
looked at your packages but I believe that you inherited them from
Debian where I have reported this problem. The passwords that you
release in the bacula-xx.conf files are generated by Bacula at build
time, and thus are installed on all systems, and hence are not secure,
and this applies to all versions of Bacula that you have packaged. If
you have explicitly added code in the install process that generates
random passwords, then this bug should be closed, otherwise, it should
be left open and marked as a security problem.

Note, this is a packaging problem. Bacula generates random passwords
during the ./configure process, so everything is consistent, but once it
is packaged, the packager needs to create similar code to the Bacula
./configure so that all installations will have different passwords.

If you want, I can provide you with sample code suitable to put in your
installation packages.

[Bug 265058] Re: openvpn2.1~rc7 fails to pick up the CN of certificates

2008-09-10 Thread Stefan Lesicnik
Please consider the attached debdiff to resolve this issue with
openvpn-2.1~rc7.

This bug will affect all users using x509 certificates and the ccd
function of openvpn.

This bug has been resolved by upstream in Intrepid has it was fixed in
openvpn-2.1~rc8 and Intrepid now includes openvpn-2.1~rc9.

The discussion with more details about this bug can be found on the
openvpn mailing list when the user reported.

[Bug 267696] Re: [SRU] mysqldump fails silently against mysql 4.0 server

2008-09-10 Thread Chuck Short
Databases that are dumped from a mysql 4.1 database will silently fail
when dumping to a database on hardy. This is due to a bug in mysql. The
full description can be found at http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=34192.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1. Install a mysql 4.1 database
2. Create a database in the mysql 4.1 database.
3. Create a dump of the database
4. Try to dump the database into mysql version in hardy.
5. It will silently fail.

I have attached the patch that fixes this issue. And it has been tested
from my ppa. If you have any questions please let me know.

Thanks

[Bug 222558] Re: password in bacula-fd.conf is not auto-generated

2008-09-10 Thread hehol
I'm sorry I did not respond to this bug earlier. I missed Chuck's reply
in April. Kern is absolutely right, this is a packaging problem
inherited from Debian.

I didn't want to make the problem bigger than it acutally is. People who
are using Bacula should be aware of the fact that the software uses a
shared secret to communicate between the different components of the
software package. But Joe Average who runs Bacula with the default
settings coming from the .deb package will find himself left with a
shared secret common to all Ubuntu Bacula installations and there are no
indications whatsoever in the READMEs or in the configuration files
which indicate this weakness.

Depending on your point of view, you might consider this a serious
security issue.

I'm going to choose the simple option and just fix the packaging to
place the libwbclient.so.0 from likewise-open to /usr/lib/likewise-
open/. It is possible to integrate smbd from Samba to use the
libwbclient.so.0 provided by likewise-open by using a virtual
(replaces/conflicts/depends) package like postfix vs. exim. But I
believe I'll wait on that one. Expect a fix this week,

[Bug 262264] Re: Fails to join a domain: Unknown pam configuration

[Bug 268663] [NEW] files incoming through nautilus-share should be created with user ownership, instead of "nobody"

2008-09-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: nautilus-share

Steps to reproduce
1- Create a usershare with nautilus (say, ~/Public)
2- From another computer, send a file to this share

The file will have ownership to user "nobody" and group "nogroup",
instead of the userś ownership and starting group. This makes it
inconvenient to modify these files, especially since there's no easy way
to change ownership of files and folders (one has to know about the
nautilus-gksu package, which is not installed by default).

** Affects: samba (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Incomplete

[Bug 268663] Re: files incoming through nautilus-share should be created with user ownership, instead of "nobody"

2008-09-10 Thread Chris Coulson
I don't think this is a nautilus-share problem as it is only responsible
for initially creating the share, so I've reassigned this to Samba.
Could you please provide the following additional information:

1. Please attach your /etc/samba/smb.conf to this bug report.
2. Please run "tar -czf usershares.tar.gz /var/lib/samba/usershares" and attach
the resulting file "usershares.tar.gz" to this bug report.

Thanks

[Bug 254434] Re: package libwbclient0 2:3.2.0-4ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/libwbclient.so.0', which is also in package likewise-open

2008-09-10 Thread Gerald Carter
Theirry, the fix that you are suggesting will not work. The libwbclient
that likewise-open includes is compatible but not equivalent to the one
provided by Samba. Here's a new rules file. Just leave the
libwbclienbt.so.0 included in likewise-open in /usr/lib/likewise-open
for now.

[Bug 192643] Re: dnsmasq with enable-dbus doesn't work properly with NetworkManager

2008-09-10 Thread Howard Chu
Just a few comments on prioritizing this wishlist item - I think using
this feature should be the default on any desktop install; using dnsmasq
improves all name resolver lookup response times, and by eliminating
rewrites to /etc/resolv.conf it makes it a lot easier to run a secure
system with a read-only root partition. Also, it has a power savings
benefit on laptops by avoiding the churn of rewriting the file. The
whole notion of rewriting any config files in /etc as a normal matter-
of-course is completely wrong-headed to begin with...

Re: [Bug 268364] Re: Bug in /usr/bin/ucf when upgrading Hardy

2008-09-10 Thread Flemming Bjerke
Wednesday 10 September 2008 skrev Benjamin Drung:

> . I have classified this bug
> as a bug in samba-common. ..
>

> Sourcepackagename: None => samba

I don't think this a good idea because the bug is not a specific samba
problem - unless /usr/bin/ucf is invoked by samba, only. From /usr/bin/ucf:

# This script attempts to provide conffile like handling for files not
# shipped in a Debian package, but handled by the postinst. Using this
# script, one may ship a bunch of default cofiguration files somewhere
# in /usr (/usr/share/ is a good location), and maintain files in
# /etc.
#
# The motivation for this script was to provide conffile like handling
# for start files for emacs lisp packages (for example,
# /etc/emacs21/site-stard.d/50psgml-init.el) ...
#
# This script is meant to be invoked by the packages install script

I don't know where ucf comes from, but I don't think those responsible for
the samba packages should do anything about it. It does not stem from their
packet.

Moreover, I experienced it as a kubuntu-desktop problem, too, because samba is
included in the kubuntu-desktop. That is, to get rid of the problem, you must
remove kubuntu-desktop ... or change ucf.

BUT, I wonder why all other kubuntu users apparently don't this problem.
Perhaps they don't have this version of ucf on their box. Could this have
something to do with that my system is upgraded from Dapper? Please, checkout
if the bug is in your ucf! It is easily done..

You see this is not a samba problem.
