[Bug 342655] Re: Confusing debconf message when upgrading

2009-03-15 Thread Jaime Frutos Morales
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. I'm sorry, but I don't see why these messages look funny.
The look normal to me. Marking this bug as invalid.

[Bug 270395] Re: cannot resolve windows host name

2009-03-15 Thread clovepower
Actually if I go to Windows and do

ping Windows Host Name

it works, and if I do

ping Linux Laptop Name

it works too.

IMHO I think that most, if not all, Ubuntu users will sooner or later
plug their laptop into a LAN and they will expect to see other PCs,
hence this bug somehow will need to be addressed either fixing winbind
or with some other voodoo.

I think this is such a basic feature that WON'T FIX is inappropriate

[Bug 242956] Re: Bind9 (8.04) not returning 'ad' flag when dnssec is enabled

2009-03-15 Thread Curt Sampson
As related in the original ticket description, all this stuff is working
fine under NetBSD; the issue is not with the data, but with Ubuntu. In
particular, there's certainly an issue with Ubuntu glibc that will
simply not allow it to check the AD bit.

While we only reported this recently, I'm wondering if this bug has
languished for years in glibc because nobody understands what the AD bit
is used for. Let me give you one example of the current situation:

 1. Try to ssh to foo.cynic.net, with authentication forwarding.
 2. OpenSSH looks up the IP address in DNS, but this has been intercepted by
the attacker.
 3. The resolver cannot authenticate so we carry on.
 4. Look up the SSHFP record in DNS, which may also have been intercepted by
the attacker.
 5. The resolver cannot authenticate this, so OpenSSH (correctly) refuses to
use it.
 6. User gets an, Unknown host, fingerprint is blah blah message.

At this point, it goes one of two different ways.

  7. User foolishly says, it's ok, continue, and connects to hostile system.
  8. Hostile system uses user's SSH authentication channel to log in to and
subvert other systems to which the user has access.
  9. User a few seconds later, realizes he's on some weird system and logs out,
but the damage is done.

Or, if the user is a bit smarter:

 7. User says, no don't connect to an untrusted host.
 8. User tries to find some out-of-band way to figure out the fingerprint of
the host he really wants to connect to.
 9. User then realizes that he's under attack.

We get around this by manually generating and copying around (to
/etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts) a file of public keys for our systems. This
costs us time and money.

The checkbox says Do you want post-installation script to remove
these data files?. I thought that checkboxes are supposed to have
statements next to them, not questions. I had to think about what
would happen if I clicked the check button. Also, critical
information as to what the checkbox's question means is shown after
you click the help button.

I know this is graphical debconf, but I don't think it's being done
very well. This bug isn't very important, but I think the behavior
shown is suboptimal. It would be better if a yes/no question had
buttons for yes and no and the question was more descriptive, i.e.
Remove files in /var/log/sysstat?.

[Bug 338720] Re: Function lookup problem after calling setlocale(LC_ALL, tr_TR)

2009-03-15 Thread Andreas Olsson
I can kind of confirm this bug. Actually I can only confirm this error
for certain function names. For example, try replace HI5() with foo(),
and everything should work as expected.

From my limited testing I've only ran into this problem when the
function name contains a capital I.

Not entirely sure if this is a bug in PHP. While generating the tr_TR
locale I received the following errors:

r...@pc13267v3:/var/lib/locales/supported.d# echo tr_TR ISO-8859-1 local
r...@pc13267v3:/var/lib/locales/supported.d# locale-gen

All of the above applies to current versions of Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10 and
9.04.

2009-03-15 Thread Andreas Olsson
I've now reported the locale issue in bug #343298. While I suspect that
that might be the root cause, I'm not sure.

[Bug 197476] Re: akonadi does not work with the apparmor rules introduced for /usr/sbin/mysqld on hardy.

2009-03-15 Thread Martin Stjernholm
May I suggest that the mysql package adds a hardlink itself, say
/usr/sbin/mysqld-standalone or something, for use in other applications?
That way each application that runs its own mysqld doesn't have to
meddle with the hardlink maintenance, and it would presumably be a lot
easier to do for the mysql-server package in its own postinst/prerm
scripts.

A case in point (closer to my own use case) is that it'd also be more
convenient for apps that aren't packaged as debs, but rather uses its
own install script for classical /usr/local style installations.
